Papa’s jaw dropped when Mama told him that Sister had cheated on her final exams—not to succeed but to fail. “It’s unbelievable!” he said. “Sister has always been so proud of her good grades!”
“Yes, she has,” said Mama. “But it’s not unbelievable. It just shows how badly she wanted off the swimming team.”
“She never said anything about that to me.” said Papa.
“Of course she didn’t,” said Mama. “She was afraid you’d blow your top. You already had her getting a swimming scholarship to college and winning gold medals at the Olympics. Can you imagine how much pressure she must have felt?”
“Oh, my gosh!” Papa said, “I’ve been so stupid! I just thought she’d want to be a champion swimmer because she’s so good at it.”
“It’s like anything else, dear,” said Mama, “No matter how good at it you are, if it stops being fun, you won’t want to do it anymore.”
“She must be really mad at me,” he mumbled (嘟哝). “Maybe I should say sorry to her.”
Sister’s footsteps could be heard on the stairs. She came into the kitchen and looked hopefully up at her parents.
“Honey,” said Mama with a smile, “your papa and I have decided that there’s no reason for you to be on the swimming team if you don’t want to.”
Sister’s face lit up like a Christmas tree. She ran to Papa and jumped into his arms, giving him a big hug. “I’m going to play cards with Lizzy!” she said. “See you later!”

Ask someone what they have done to help the environment recently and they will almost certainly mention recycling. Recycling in the home is very important of course. However, being forced to recycle often means we already have more material than we need. We are dealing with the results of that over-consumption in the greenest way possible, but it would be far better if we did not need to bring so much material home in the first place.
The total amount of packaging increased by 12% between 1999 and 2005. It now makes up a third of a typical household’s waste in the UK. In many supermarkets nowadays food items are packaged twice with plastic and cardboard.
Too much packaging is doing serious damage to the environment. The UK, for example, is running out of areas for burying this unnecessary waste. If such packaging is burnt, it gives off greenhouse gases which go on to cause the greenhouse effect. Recycling helps, but the process itself uses energy. The solution is not to produce such items in the first place. Food waste is a serious problem, too. Too many supermarkets encourage customers to buy more than they need. However, a few of them are coming round to the idea that this cannot continue, encouraging customers to reuse their plastic bags, for example.
But this is not just about supermarkets. It is about all of us. We have learned to associate packaging with quality. We have learned to think that something unpackaged is of poor quality. This is especially true of food. But it also applies to a wide range of consumer products, which often have far more packaging than necessary.
There are signs of hope. As more of us recycle, we are beginning to realize just how much unnecessary material are collecting. We need to face the wastefulness of our consumer culture, but we have a mountain to climb.
55. What does the underlined phrase “over-consumption” refer to?
A. Using too much packaging. B. Having more material than is needed.
C. Making more products than necessary. D. Recycling too many wastes.
56. The author uses figures in Paragraph 2 to show _________.
15
A. the tendency of cutting household waste B. the increase of packaging recycling
C. the rapid growth of super markets D. the fact of packaging overuse
57. According to the text, recycling_________.
A. is the solution to gas shortage B. means burning packaging for energy
C. helps control the greenhouse effect D. leads to a waste of land
58. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Fighting wastefulness is difficult. B. Needless material is mostly recycled.
C. People like collecting recyclable waste. D. The author is proud of their consumer culture.
C
My father was 44 and knew he wasn’t going to make it to 45. He wrote me a letter and hoped that something in it would help me for the rest of my life.
Since the day I was 12 and first read his letter, some of his words have lived in my heart. One part always stands out. “Right now, you are pretending to be a time-killer. But I know that one day, you will do something great that will set you among the very best.” Knowing that my dad believed in me gave me permission to believe in myself. “You will do something great.” He didn’t know what that would be, and neither did I, but at times in my life when I’ve felt proud of myself, I remember his words and wish he were here so I could ask. “Is this what you were talking about, Dad? Should I keep going?”
A long way from 12 now, I realize he would have been proud when I made any progress. Lately, though, I’ve come to believe he’d want me to move on to what comes next: to be proud of, and believe in, somebody else. It’s time to start writing my own letters to my children. Our children look to us with the same unanswered question we had. Our kids don’t hold back because they’re afraid to fail. They’re only afraid of failing us. They don’t worry about being disappointed. Their fear-as mine was until my father’s letter-is of being a disappointment.
Give your children permission to succeed. They’re writing for you to believe in them. I always knew my parents loved me. But trust me: That belief will be more complete, that love will be more real, and their belief in themselves will be greater if you write the words on their hearts; “Don’t worry; you’ll do something great.” Not having that blessing from their parents may be the only thing holding them back.
59. We learn from the text that the author _________.
A. lost his father when he was young
B. Worked hard before he read his father's letter
C. Asked his father's permission to believe in himself
D. Knew exactly what great thing his father wanted him to do
60. What does the author tell us in the 3rd paragraph?
A. Children need their parents’ letters.
B. Children are afraid to be disappointed.
C. His father’s letter removed his fear of failing his parents.
D. His children’s fear of failure held them back.
61. Which of the following is true of the author?
A. He got no access to success. B. He was sure his parents loved him.
15
C. He wrote back to his father at 12. D. He once asked his father about the letter.
62. The main purpose of the text is to _________.
A. describe children’s thinking B. answer some questions children have
C. stress the importance of communication D. advise parents to encourage their children

Dear Sir or Madam,
My name is Li Hua. I am writing to recommend myself as one of the Goodwill Ambassadors.
I come from Class Three Grade Three. I do well in my lessons, especially in spoken English. I got the first place in the English Speech Contest in our city last year; therefore, I have no difficulty communicating with foreigners in English.
I would like to learn more about western countries and have a better understanding of foreign culture. I think this is a good chance for me to put my talent into good use. By accompanying visiting guests from foreign countries, I can exchange ideas with them and spread Chinese culture. I sincerely hope that I can be a Goodwill Ambassador of our school.
Looking forward to your reply.

M: And how many are coming? Did you say about 12?
W: Yes, they said 12 at first, but changed it to 10 this morning.
M: Good, we have 8 weeks to prepare; here are my suggestions. On the first day, a welcome party, then they can visit the schools in the district on the second and third days.
W: We have got to remember this group wants to look at how computers are being used in the classroom.
M: Exactly, so I want to ask Mr. Goodman to give them a talk on this on the afternoon of the third day.
W: That will fit very nicely.
M: And on the last day, they would do some sightseeing, we could take them on the tour of London but many of them may have been there already, and Scotland will be too far away.
W: Why not take them for a walk along the coast? It should be interesting.
M: Good idea! Kathy, I’m sure they’ll like it.

W: There are many interesting stories about how a baby learns to say its first word. Now, Mike, would your like to share your story with us?
M: Ok, here’s my story, I was about 18 months old I think and I had just started to say my first word. Every time a truck went by, I would shout a word that sounded like truck, but to everyone else, it sounded nothing like it. My parents tried to correct me, but failed. Then, about three months later, we traveled to New York. As we were waiting for our plane at the airport, I looked out of a huge window. At that very moment I saw the largest truck in the world. I had to tell someone about this. I turned to my father who was standing next to a thousand people waiting for various flights and screamed truck! Truck! My father tried hard to shut me up, but I was so excited, I kept screaming my special word. My poor mother decided she didn’t know this baby and ran into the ladies’ room where she hid until I finally stopped. Well, I learned how to say truck correctly, and soon I was talking like a normal child. However, my parents will never forget the very first word I produced in my life.
