Text 10
W: My favourite subject at school was maths. I enjoyed solving problems, and was interested in teaching methods. But most of my friends found maths very difficult, and because they thought it was a useless subject they saw no need for working at it. Maths was, in fact, the least popular subject in our class. During my last year at school our maths teacher's child was seriously ill and she had to stay with him in the hospital for two weeks. Some students became very worried about their maths exam results. Each evening, I gave lessons to three of my friends, so that they would have a chance of passing their examination. I was patient, and got good at explaining things to people, and the lessons went well. My three friends and I all passed the examination. Their parents offered to pay me for the lessons, but I refused. I was sorry for my teacher. I did not think it would be fair if I took the money for doing my teacher's job.

Everybody in this world is different from one another. But do you know that understanding differences can help you better manage your money?
As we grow up, we gradually develop a set of our own values or beliefs. These are influenced by society, family background, the education and so on. Once this value system is set up, it's not easy to change later in life.
Financial experts say that everyone also has his own belief of how to manage his finances. This is part of our value system and it has a great impact on the way we look after our money.
According to our different values, experts put us in three categories. They

are the ant, the cricket(蟋蟀) and the snail.
The ant—works first
Just like ants who work heart and soul in summer in order to store food for winter, these people don't care about enjoying the moment. They work very hard and save money they earn so that they can enjoy life when they get old and retire. The ants love to save but they could make more out of their money if they were willing to invest in some funds and stocks with low risk.
The cricket—has fun first
The cricket wants to enjoy everything now and doesn't think too much about the future. They even borrow money when they really want something. Many young people now belong to this group. These people have little savings. When they get old, they might have problems. They should learn to save and buy insurance.
The snail—lives under pressure
The snail refers to people who make life difficult for themselves. They take big long-term loans from the bank in order to buy things such as luxury houses. They are happy to take big loans even though they are not sure whether they can afford it. This can cause problems in the future. They should plan more carefully.

When something goes wrong, it can be very satisfying to say, “Well, it's
- 14 -
soandso's fault.” or “I know I'm late, but it's not my fault; the car broke down.” It is probably not your fault, but once you form the habit of blaming somebody or something else for a bad situation, you are a loser. You have no power and could do nothing that helps change the situation. However, you can have great power over what happens to you if you stop focusing on whom to blame and start focusing on how to remedy the situation. This is the winner's key to success.
Winners are great at overcoming problems. For example,if you were late because your car broke down, maybe you need to have your car examined more regularly. Or, you might start to carry along with you the useful phone numbers,so you could call for help when in need. For another example, if your colleague causes you problems on the job for lack of responsibility or ability, find ways of dealing with his irresponsibility or inability rather than simply blame the person. Ask to work with a different person ,or don't rely on the person. You should accept that the person is not reliable and find creative ways to work successfully regardless of how your colleague fails to do his job well.
This is what being a winner is all about—creatively using your skills and talents so that you are successful no matter what happens. Winners don't have fewer problems in their lives; they have just as many difficult situations to face as anybody else. They are just better at seeing those problems as challenges and opportunities to develop their own talents. So, stop focusing on “whose fault it is”. Once you are confident about your power over bad situations, problems are just stepping stop on for success.
25.According to the passage, winners ________.
A.deal with problems rather than blame others
B.meet with fewer difficulties in their lives
C.have responsible and able colleagues
D.blame themselves rather than others
26.The underlined word “remedy” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to ________.
A.avoid B.accept
C.improve D.consider

A.find a better way to handle the problem
B.blame him for his lack of responsibility
C.tell him to find the cause of the problem
D.ask a more able colleague for help

Austin Gutwein shoots hoops (环) to raise money for orphans in Africa.
He once spent six hours shooting 2,057 throws. The marathon effort did more than just make his arms tired—it raised about $3,000 to help kids in Africa.
Four years later, Austin, 13, has turned his one-kid effort into Hoops of Hope,a growing nonprofit group with thousands of participants in six countries. A nonprofit group is one that does not make money for itself.
Each Hoops of Hope member aims to shoot 500 to 2,057 free throws. Austin chose the number 2,057 because that is about the number of kids in Africa who are orphaned (成为孤儿) by AIDS during the length of a typical school day, based on United Nations data. AIDS is a disease spread by body fluids. The disease is the No. 1 cause of death in Africa. It kills about 6,000 people on the continent each day.
Free-throw participants collect donations from their friends and families. So far, Austin and Hoops of Hope have raised more than $300,000. That money has gone toward building a new school and a medical center in Zambia, a country in Southern Africa.
Austin visited Zambia last fall to see the difference he has made firsthand. “The kids are just like me,and they have goals, and they have dreams, and they have a purpose,”he told WR News. “They were happy even though they were living in poverty.”
This year,Austin hopes to raise enough money to build a second medical center in Zambia. He and other Hoops of Hope participants will hit the courts on May 16. “You don't need to wait to be an adult to make a difference,”Austin says.
29.Why did Austin choose to shoot 2,057 free throws?
A.Because he wanted to set a new record of shooting hoops.
B.Because it was the number of kids who died of AIDS in Africa.
C.Because 2,057 kids lose their parents because of AIDS every day.
D.Because 2,057 kids died of AIDS at school each day in Africa.
30.Austin went to Zambia last fall in order to ________.
A.find out what effect he had on African orphans
B.send the donations of $300,000 to orphans himself
C.examine the medical center built based on their donations
D.find a suitable place to build another medical center
31.By saying “Yon don't need to wait to be an adult to make a difference”, Austin means ________.
A.making a difference needs immediate actions
B.there is no use waiting to make a difference
C.you can't expect an adult to make a difference
D.even teenagers can make a difference too

The meaning of the word “volunteer” may be a little different in different countries, but it usually means“one who offers his or her services”. There are many different ways in which people can volunteer, such as taking care of sick people, working in homes for homeless children, and picking up the waste from beaches and parks. Volunteers may work within their own countries or in other countries. They are often people with a strong wish to help those who are less fortunate than themselves. Volunteers don't expect any kind of pay.
At the root of volunteering is the idea that one person may have the ability to offer services that can help other people. Tracy ,a good friend of mine, however, recently came back from India with a new idea of what being a volunteer means. She worked for two and a half weeks in one of Mother Teresa's homes in Calcutta. The following is her story.
“I first heard about Mother Teresa in my high school when we watched a video about her work in India and all over the world. I was so moved by her spirit to help others and her endless love for every human being that after I graduated from high school, I, too, wanted to try her kind of work. So with two friends I flew to Calcutta for a few weeks.”
“I was asked to work in a home for sick people. I helped wash clothes and sheets, and pass out lunch. I also fed the people who were too weak to feed themselves and tried to cheer them up. I felt it was better to share with them than to think that I have helped them. To be honest,I don't think I was helping very much. It was then that I realized that I had not only come to help, but also to learn about and experience another culture that helped improve my own understanding of life and the world.”
33.What's the best title of this passage?
A.Volunteers Sharing As Well As Helping
B.Volunteers Washing As Well As Cleaning
C.Volunteers Cheering As Well As Planting
D.Volunteers Caring As Well As Understanding
34.According to the text,a volunteer refers to a person who ________.
A.is willing to help those in need without reward
B.can afford to travel to different places
C.has a strong wish to be successful
D.has made a big fortune in life

答案:A
54.解析:既然成绩是C等,那么也就与奖学金无缘了,故本题应选择A项。
答案:A

答案:C

答案:C
59.解析:Jayne教授说明了给“我”C等的理由,“我”也意识到了他的分析和策略是正确的,表示“意识到”用realize。

travelling abroad is very meaningful. First, travelling abroad can broaden my horizons. When I visit a foreign country, I can learn more about the customs and history of the country. At the same time, I can make lots of friends. Besides, communicating with the local people will give me the chance to learn a foreign language. The most important thing is that I can relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
Michael, please come to China when you are free. I do hope you can witness the great changes in China.
Yours_truly,
Li_Hua
