Creating your presentation with your audience in mind will make sure that they will follow you. If your presentation doesn’t appeal to your audience ― no matter how well you have developed it ― your presentation will fall on deaf ears. This leads us to the next rule: Know your material very well. Your material should be second nature to you. Practice giving your presentation with friends, in front of a mirror, and with co-workers. If you are speaking in a second language, make sure that you record yourself and listen a number of times before going to practice with a native speaker (if possible). ‎ Remember that you are an actor when presenting. Make sure that not only your physical appearance is appropriate for the occasion, but also the tone(音调) you use is well chosen. If your topic is serious, then be serious. However, it’s always a good idea to begin your presentation with an ice-breaker. Don’t worry about making friends, rather lead the audience through your material in a calm and relaxed manner. Speak slowly and clearly, and remember to address everyone in the audience ― even the person the farthest away from you.‎ 10‎ To achieve the above goals, follow these tips when giving your presentation: ‎ Ÿ Speak with confidence. Believe what you are saying and you will persuade your audience.‎ Ÿ Do not read from notes. Using notes is fine, but do so only briefly. ‎ Ÿ Keep eye contact with your audience. Making direct eye contact with people will help them feel as if they are participating in your presentation. ‎ Ÿ Bring photocopies. Don’t just use a PowerPoint presentation. Provide audience members with photocopies of the most important materials so they can keep your most important points in mind. ‎ Ÿ Know when to stop. This is very important. You need to make your case, but continuing for too long will only ensure that the audience forgets what you have said. ‎ ‎21. What is the passage mainly about?‎ A. Tips to make an effective presentation. ‎ B. The role of a speaker in a presentation. ‎ C. Ways to help audience follow a presentation.‎ D. The importance of practicing before a presentation.‎ ‎22. You may practice your presentation with all the following EXCEPT __________.‎ A. your friends B. your co-workers ‎ C. a stranger D. a native speaker ‎23. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 infers that you should __________.‎ ‎ A. treasure your presentation material as your second nature ‎ B. put your second nature into your presentation material ‎ C. fully present yourself in your presentation material ‎ D. be very familiar with your presentation material ‎24. What helps you achieve your goals when giving your presentation?‎ ‎ A. Avoid talking about anything you are not sure of.‎ ‎ B. Make continuous direct eye contact with your audience.‎ ‎ C. Present your material non-stop through your presentation.‎ ‎ D. Provide photocopies of every detail about your presentation.‎ B ‎ Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland, and has long been a favorite destination of tourists from all over the world, as well as an important cultural and political center.‎ ‎ With its museums, shops, wonderful historic castle, and many pubs and restaurants, there are many things for visitors to enjoy all year round. And of course, as it is in Scotland, there are a wide range of whiskies to try!‎ ‎ However, there is more to Edinburgh than historic monuments and tourism. Each year, the Edinburgh Festival takes place in the city. In late summer, for three weeks, the festival presents classical music, theater, opera and dance at six major theaters and concert halls—and several smaller ones—throughout the city. Whatever your cultural tastes, you are sure to find something to enjoy.‎ 10‎ ‎ Local talent is always represented at the Edinburgh Festival giving Scottish composers and playwrights the opportunity to showcase their work and gain recognition from a wider audience.‎ ‎ In addition, orchestras (管弦乐队) and theater companies come from all over the world to perform at the prestigious (有名望的) festival. Last year saw the arrival of orchestras from the United States and Germany.‎ ‎ The festival has now become an important part of Scotland’s economy as well as its culture. Last year’s festival generated over £130 million expenditure in Edinburgh alone, and across Scotland nearly 2,900 jobs exist as a direct result of the festival.‎ ‎ The festival is so popular that it has become, in some ways, a victim of its own success. The huge interest in performing there led to the setting up of a rival (竞争的) festival, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Fortunately, demand for live entertainment during the summer is so great that both festivals continue to thrive (兴旺).‎ ‎ The Fringe tends to feature mostly comedy and experimental works. Yet it can lead to great things—many famous and successful comedians and artists, such as Rowan Atkinson, better known as TV’s Mr. Bean, started their careers in small venues at the Fringe.‎ ‎25. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?‎ ‎ A. The festival is economically important for Scotland.‎ ‎ B. Many people in Scotland rely on the festival for their jobs.‎ ‎ C. Local performers challenge bands from all over the world.‎ ‎ D. One is sure to find something to enjoy during the festival.‎ ‎26. What does the underlined part “a victim of its own success” most probably mean?‎ ‎ A. A prestigious band for its successful performance.‎ ‎ B. An unsuccessful performance without good preparation.‎ ‎ C. An orchestra from another country performing in Edinburgh.‎ ‎ D. A festival that causes trouble for itself because of great success.‎ ‎27. What we can learn from the passage is that ________.‎ ‎ A. the Edinburgh Festival attracts audience across the world ‎ B. both festivals win good recognition from a wide audience ‎ C. the Fringe was set up in the hope of accepting the challenge ‎ D. many comedians and artists took off overnight at the Fringe ‎28. Which of the following can be the best title for this passage?‎ ‎ A. Edinburgh ------ A City of Culture B. Edinburgh ------ A Tourist Attraction ‎ C. Edinburgh ------ A Political Center D. Edinburgh ------ A Place to Try Whiskies C Some people seem easy to understand: their character appears obvious on first meeting. Appearances, however, can be deceptive. I shrug my shoulders when people tell me that their first impressions of a person are always right. For my own part 10‎ ‎ I find that the longer I know people, the more they puzzle me.‎ I read in this morning’s paper that Edward Hyde Burton had died. He was a businessman and he had been in business in Japan for many years. Once he gave me a great surprise. Unless I had heard the story from his own lips, I’d never have believed that he was capable of such an action. He was always neatly and quietly dressed in accordance with his age and position. He didn’t talk much, but what he said was sensible. You couldn’t imagine he’d possibly raise his voice in anger. Here was a man who attracted you because you felt in him a real love for his fellows. He’d tell with point a good and spicy story, and in his youth he’d been something of an athlete. He was a rich man and he’d made every penny himself. I suppose one thing that made you like him was that he was so weak; he aroused your instincts(本能) of protection. You felt he couldn’t bear to hurt a fly.‎ ‎ One afternoon Burton told me a “funny” story in a quiet, dry humour:‎ ‎ “There was a namesake(同名人) of mine, who was the best bridge player I ever met. He seemed to have a fantastic instinct about the cards. He won a good deal of my money by card-playing.”‎ ‎“One day he came to me when he lost all his fortune. He came to see me in my office and asked me for a job. I asked him how old he was.”‎ ‎“ ‘Thirty-five’, he said.”‎ ‎ “ ‘And what have you been doing ever since ?’ I asked him.”‎ ‎ “ ‘Well, nothing very much.’ he said.”‎ ‎ “ ‘I’m afraid I can’t do anything for you just yet’ I said. ‘Come back and see me in another thirty-five years, and I’ll see what I can do.’ ”‎ ‎“He didn’t move. He went rather pale. He hesitated for a moment and then he told me that he had had bad luck at cards for some time. He lost everything he had. He hadn’t a penny. He was down and out. If he couldn’t get something to do he’d not survive.” ‎ ‎“I looked at him for a bit. I could see now that he was all to pieces. He’d been drinking more than usual and he looked fifty.” ‎ ‎“Suddenly I had an idea.” Pausing in his story, Burton turned to me. “When I was young I swam over three miles round the beacon(灯塔) and landed at the river of Tarumi. It’s rather difficult on account of the currents round the beacon. Well, I told my young fellow about it and I said that if he’d do it I’d give him a job.”‎ ‎“I could see he was rather surprised. He was not in good condition for sports. He looked at me for a moment and then he nodded.”‎ ‎“I told him I’d drive round to the river at half past twelve and meet him.”‎ ‎ “ ‘Done,’ he said.”‎ ‎“I wished him good luck and he left me. I had a lot of work to do that morning and I only just managed to get to the river Tarumi at half past twelve. But I needn’t have hurried; he never turned up.”‎ ‎ “Did he fear it at the last moment?” I asked.‎ ‎“No, he didn’t fear it. He started all right. But of course he’d ruined his constitution(体质) by drink. The currents round the beacon were more than he could manage. We didn’t get the body for about three days.”‎ 10‎ I didn’t say anything for a moment or two. I was rather shocked. Then I asked.‎ ‎ “When you made him that offer of a job, did you know he’d be drowned?”‎ ‎ He looked at me with his kind blue eyes, smiling. “Well, I hadn’t got a position in my office at the moment.”‎ ‎29. The underlined word “deceptive” may mean .‎ ‎ A. puzzling B. misleading C. complex D. impressive ‎30. For some time, Edward Burton impressed the author most with his .‎ ‎ A. age and position B. wealth and ability ‎ C. sensibility and humor D. kindness and weakness ‎31. It’s great fun especially if you are the sort of person who feels there’s never anything to do during the school holidays.‎ ‎ The first thing you need to come up with is an idea for your club. 35 Pets, clothes, pop music or dancing, sports, making things? The list is endless.‎ ‎ Next you need some friends to be in your club with you. 36 All you need is three or four other people who are interested in the same thing as you.‎ ‎ 37 You should all sit down somewhere together with lots of pieces of paper and write down every name you can think up. That’ll keep you busy for ages.‎ ‎ At your first meeting you should make up a rule book. And the first rule should be no grown-ups or little/big brothers or sisters! The best clubs are always secret!‎ Now you have just about everything you need, except membership cards. These are very important and again you can spend a lot of time making them. 38 Why not leave some space for a photo of yourself? That will make the membership card really look like it.‎ So there you are, get clubbing! Once you get started you’ll think of loads of more interesting things to do!‎ A. That’s easy.‎ B.
