Goldfish have pretty boring lives, so maybe it’s a good thing they can only concentrate for nine seconds! But according to new research, humans are becoming like goldfish. Our attention span (时长) is getting shorter ...and it’s all because of technology.
“We move quickly from one site to another on the web,”says Doctor Ted Selker, a computer scientist from Massachusetts,“and we are losing the ability to concentrate.”With millions of websites to choose from, the attention span of the average internet user is just seconds. There are other digital distractions(分心)too: email, instant messaging and quickie movies on websites. Some people are worried about the effect on young people. “You need time to understand and think about what you read,”says Julia Wood, from London.“Young people search the net all the time and their brains become full of useless information but there is no time to make sense of it. I am trying to persuade my pupils to read more books, so that they concentrate on one subject for longer.”
Other teachers are trying more unusual methods to improve students’ concentration. Anne Savan, from Wales, was so worried about her students that she started playing Mozart during her science lessons. She says that it had an amazing effect:“The music made them calmer, and their concentration was much better.”
But not everyone believes that there is a problem. Ray Cole, an educational psychologist says: “On the web, young people learn to make quick decisions about what is and isn’t worth reading.
They might look at five unhelpful websites very quickly, before stopping and reading a sixth useful website more carefully. In a world with so much information available, this is an important skill.”
24. Why does the writer mention“goldfish”?
A. To introduce background. B. To introduce a topic.
C. To settle problems. D. To suggest a way out.
25. What may cause a shorter attention span according to Dr. Ted Selker?
A. Skipping around the internet. B. Time to digest information.
C. Traditional methods of reading. D. Making decisions.
26. What will help students overcome a short attention span?
A. Receiving emails. B. Texting messages.
C. Reading more books. D. Watching quickie movies.
27. What is Ray Cole’s attitude towards looking through websites quickly?
A. Cautious. B. Unfavorable. C. Skeptical. D. Supportive.

Restriction
A good program should not overly restrictive(限制的)on food allowances. Some programs ask you not to eat foods from the main nutrient food groups like fruit and vegetables.A successful weight loss plan, for most people, should not involve less than 1,200 calories per day.

第二节 短文7选5(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10 分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项,并将试卷上的答案转涂到答题卡上。
In your life, whether intentionally or accidentally you may offend someone close to you. What you do about it will make the most difference. Learning how to say sorry in the right way will help you repair and keep the important relationships in your life.
The best place to start is at the beginning. It is normal to be scared as you ask for forgiveness and say you are sorry. Make sure you get it right and practice in the mirror. 36
37 Don’t apologize if you don’t really feel sorry. More bad will come than good if you say you are sorry without any meaning. It may ruin any future attempts and apologies that are sincere.
Make sure that you can admit wrong doing. Telling them that you are wrong helps them see that you know what you have done has offended them. 38 They may not want to know why, or if they do they will ask.
Then find out how you can make it right with them. 39 Make sure that if you agree to make things right, do them completely without causing offence.
Let them know that you will never do it again. Let your friend or whoever you offended know that you have no intention of repeating your mistake. This will help them know that they aren’t being taken advantage of.
Ask them for forgiveness. 40 Being truly sorry means that you want to put the whole mess behind you and being forgiven means that it will never be mentioned again.
Learning from past mistakes and offences can make the future of your relationship much brighter.
A. Apologize if you really mean it.
B. Practice will help you calm down.
C. Apology will make a big difference.
D. It may be physical, emotional or financial.
E. You may give them a reason for your action, but you don’t have to.
F. Forgive yourself since everyone makes mistakes.
G. But it is their choice whether they give it to you or not.
第三部分:英语知识运用(共两节,满分45分)

阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填人空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
I felt like a good mother on that summer morning. I’d 41 up early, made a picnic lunch, 42 my three-and five-year-old daughters into the car, driven to my friend’s house, packed her and her 43 into the car, and driven the hour and a half to the shore where we 44 our towels on the sands by 10 a.m.
Soon the girls began running. About 50 yards from us, a man, maybe 45 his late 50s, was fishing. The girls stood next to him and watched with their mouths open as he 46 the lines. He smiled at them. They all ran back to us except my three-year-old Drew, who, 47 , just seated herself next to the white bucket where the man was 48 planning to put the fish he
caught.
However, suddenly a 49 came to my mind. Is it dangerous for Drew to stay there with the stranger? Good moms should also teach daughters that the world is dangerous. Then, I watched them like there was a hidden 50 in the lifeguard chair filming the man as America’s Most Wanted. Every few minutes, I looked to my five-year-old to make sure she hadn’t been 51 out to sea, then back to Drew to make sure there was no 52 between her and the stranger.
When I looked at Drew again, she had started 53 with the man. She was probably telling him where we lived and how her father was away on 54 . He nodded. She kept talking. He nodded again, then they laughed.
A few seconds later, she ran back to us, with a toy fish in her hand. It must have been
something 55 he used for bait(饵). The three other girls were 56 , so they didn’t try to 57 how eager they were to have one.
Just when I was at a loss, there he was: the man, standing right next to us. He was holding three more toy fish. He handed them to each of the girls. By their ___58____, I realized that he was 59 a warm-hearted man, meaning no harm at all.
“Thank you”, I said, realizing that yes, there is evil in this world…but there is also good, and 60 in strangers, and lessons for mothers to learn that only three-year-olds could teach them.

Dear Peter,
Nice to hear from you. In this mail, I’d like to share with you my volunteer experience in my
community hospital during the summer vacation. I worked from July 15 to July 31, during which
time people over 55 were given a free medical examination. Every day I arrived before 6:30 and
helped organize the people who came. Then I would help them fill in the forms. Leading them to
the different departments was also part of my duties. Often, by the time their
examinations were over at 11:30 a.m., I was already bathed in sweat. Tired as I was in those days, I benefited a lot from the experience.
My confidence built up and my communication skills improved.
How was your holiday?
