When I was little, I’d see tons of bats flying around streetlights at night in my neighborhood in upstate New York. But I’ll never forget the first time when I saw a bat up close. By the time I turned 7, though, I noticed something strange: All the bats in my neighborhood had disappeared, and I wondered why.
Then, three years ago, when I was 11 and visiting the state fair, I learned what had happened to my town’s bats. A disease called “white nose syndrome” had killed 93 percent of New York State’s bats. I was horrified. Then I wrote a letter to the host of an environmental program on the local radio station, asking if they could do a show on bats. They did!
But I still wanted to find a way to educate people face to face. I reached out to a teacher I had in elementary school and asked if I could make a presentation to her class. I described how bats help farmers by eating crop-damaging insects. It went over so well that other teachers started requesting me. Over the past three years, I’ve talked in front of everyone from 5-year-olds to senior citizens! Many people think that bats are blind, and that they always carry diseases, but none of that is true. The more I present, the more I notice that I am changing minds.
And while getting people to respect bats is pretty hard, getting them to respect me has been difficult too. When I first applied to host a booth (摊位) at a local street fair, the managers thought I was too young. But I refused to take “no” for an answer. I continued to make my case, and they finally said yes! The best part is, I impressed them so much — 100 visitors on my first day — that they now invite me back every year.
24. All the bats in the neighborhood disappeared because they .
A. were killed by a disease B. moved to another habitat
C. were hunted by other animals D. hid in a place where people couldn’t find them
25. The author wrote a letter to the host in order to ask them to .
A. donate some money to save bats B. make a radio program about bats
C. announce new findings about bats D. finish some questionnaires about the fair
26. How did the author save bats?
A. By building a new home for them.
B. By volunteering to work in the wild.
C. By improving their living environment.
D. By educating people that they are beneficial.
27. What does the underlined phrase “make my case.” in the last paragraph mean?
A. make an impressive persuasion. B. look into the matter.
C. quarrel with them D. stick to the facts.

Before the early 1960’s people interested in the differing roles of the left and right hemispheres(半球) of the brain depended almost entirely on facts drawn from animal research, from studies of patients with one-sided brain damage. But it was possible to find out which brain hemisphere was most involved in speech and other functions in normal people by having them listen to two different words coming to the two ears at the same time. This became known as the “dichotic listening” procedure. When several word pairs are given in a row, people are unable to report them all, and most right-handers prefer to report, and report more correctly, words given to their right ears. This seems to be related to the fact that signals from the right ear, although sent to both hemispheres, are better sent to the left hemisphere which controls speech. People who have speech represented(回忆) in the right hemisphere, a very unusual occurrence even in left-handed people, more correctly report what their left ears hear.
In contrast to the right-ear advantage for speech, there is generally a left-ear advantage for another type of auditory(听觉的) signal: music. When right-handed people listen to melodic(调子美妙的) patterns they report them better from the left ear.
32. Which of the following would be the most proper title for the passage?
A. An Introduction to Speech Damage in Patients with Brain Damage.
B. An Investigation into the Role of the Brain’s Hemispheres.
C. An Analysis of Left and Right-handed People.
D. An Examination of “Dichotic Listening”.
33. The “dichotic listening” procedure could best be described as hearing _______.
A. two different words in the same ear twice
B. the same word twice in the same ear
C. two different words in different ears
D. two different words twice in two ears
34. According to the passage, right-handed people normally _______.
A. have better hearing in their both ears
B. have little difficulty in reporting words given to their right ears
C. are unable to report word pairs given to their left ears
D. correctly report word pairs given in a row
35. According to the passage, music is best appreciated when heard by _______.
A. the left ear of right-handers
B. people with a left-ear advantage
C. left-handers in their right ears
D. right-handed people who understand melodic patterns

Tips to Increase Your Productivity
Want to get more done in your day? Of course you do. 36 The good news is that everyone can increase the amount of tasks they accomplish in a day. Here are some tips to help you have a more productive day.
Make a plan for your day. Make sure you know how you want your day to go in advance, even before you start. 37 To work best, create the next day’s plan the night before so that every morning you spend time performing, not planning.
Break large tasks down into bits accomplished easily. Do you have a large project that’s just so big that you keep putting it off? Or maybe you’re just unsure of where to begin, so you put it off. 38 Therefore, you will feel a sense of accomplishment as you check the items of your list.
Always set your priorities (优先事项). 39 Figure out what must be done, do that first and rank the rest of your work according to importance. If you don’t get to the items at the end of your list, it won’t be a big problem, and you can do them another time.
40 If you are the most productive in the morning, that’s when you should hit it hard and do as much as you can. If you work better in the afternoon, take care of some things like emails in the morning and then accomplish the important projects in the afternoon. Keep on top of your work habits, and you’ll be more productive.
A. Reward yourself if you are productive.
B. Be aware of when you are the most productive.
C. This can provide you a roadmap for the day.
D. It’s tough to meet depressed people who are productive.
E. It’s important to accomplish the most important tasks first.
F. A good way is to break the project down into more manageable ones.
G. To stay competitive in any industry, you need to improve your productivity.

W: Wake up, Peter. Time to rise and shine.
M: I must have fallen asleep while I was reading.
W: Why are you always so sleepy every time you read books?
M: I have difficulty understanding the meaning of the book.
W: Have you ever tried to find the main idea of the book first?
M: Does it help?
W: Of course. After finding the main idea, you can get to know the meaning of the book and then you can understand the details of the book.
M: Is it difficult to find the main idea?
W: It’s difficult the first time. But it will become easier and easier.

M: How can I help you?
W: My son is going to have his 16th birthday party at home. I’d like to get him a gift.
M: What price of gift are you interested in? We’ll need to know that before we begin looking.
W: Well, I usually spend about twenty dollars on a gift. Do you have anything nice for that price?
M: How about a pencil-box?
W: No, my brother gave him that for his birthday last year.
M: Well, would he enjoy a book on how to play PC games?
W: No, he is good enough to write a book himself. He loves playing PC games.
M: Then you can get him this magic car. He must be interested in that.
W: Good idea. I’ll take it.
(Text 10)187词 我的童年梦想
M: When I was young I dreamed of being a famous painter. I was so crazy about painting that I painted any time everywhere. My mother was often mad at me when she saw my paintings everywhere on the walls in our house. She always hoped that I could be a doctor. I guess she wanted me to follow my father’s footsteps. My father, however, expected me to become a photographer. He even bought me a camera and all kinds of professional books and encouraged me to attend youth photo contests. However, as you can see, boys and girls, I finally became a teacher. Life is unpredictable. Sometimes you may not achieve the dreams you once had in your childhood. But it doesn’t matter. And it doesn’t mean you’ll have to give up your dreams. You can always leave your dream in your heart and keep it as a lifetime hobby. As for me, I am still good at painting. It’s a great way to relax in my spare time. I also love photography and travelling. All my friends like the photos I take for them.
