In our culture, the sources of what we call a sense of “mastery”--feeling important and worthwhile--and the sources of what we call a sense of “pleasure”--finding life enjoyable--are not always identical. Women often are told, “You can't have it all.” Sometimes what the speaker really is saying is “You choose a career, so you can't expect to have closer relationships or a happy family life”, or “You have a wonderful husband and children--what's all this about wanting a career?” But women need to understand and develop both aspects of well-being, if they have to feel good about themselves.
Our study shows that, for women, well-being has two dimensions. One is mastery, which includes self-esteem, a sense of control over your life, and low levels of anxiety and depression. Mastery is closely related to the “doing” side of life, to work and activity. Pleasure is the other dimension, and it is composed of
happiness, satisfaction and optimism. It is tied more closely to the “feeling” side of life. The two are independent of each other. Woman could be high in mastery and low in pleasure, and vice versa. For example, a woman who has a good job, but whose mother has just died, might be feeling very good about herself and in control of her work life, but the pleasure side could be damaged for a time.
The concepts of mastery and pleasure could help us identify the sources of well-being for women, and remedy past mistakes. In the past, women are encouraged to look only at the feeling side of life as the source of all well-being. But we know that both mastery and pleasure are critical. And mastery seems to be achieved largely through work. In our study, all the groups of employed women rated significantly high in mastery than did women who were not employed.
A woman's well-being is enhanced when she takes on multiple role. At least by middle adulthood, the women who were involved in the combination of roles--marriages, motherhood, and employment--were the highest in well-being, in spite of warning about stress and strain.
31. It can be inferred from the first paragraph that_______.
A. for women, a sense of "mastery" is more important than a sense of "pleasure"

D. for women, a sense of "pleasure" is more important than a sense of "mastery"
32. The author's attitude towards women having a career is______.
A. positive B. critical C. neutral (中立的) D. realistic

Born on October 28, 1967 in Georgia, U.S.A, Julia Roberts grew up hanging around the theatre and watching her parents working. She made her film first public appearance playing a supporting role opposite her brother, Eric Roberts, in Blood in 1986. But her first real break came from the made - for - cable drama Satisfaction (1988), which led to a large supporting role in Mystic Pizza (1989). Julia Roberts’ role of a strong- headed pizza shop waitress who seduces a wealthy man earned her praise and led to her role in 1989’ s Steel Magnolias. As the poor Shelby, Roberts earned an Oscar nomination for her performance.
In order to branch off into more serious waters, Julia Roberts played a medical student who starts experimenting with life-after-death experiences in Flatliners (1990). Later in 1990, she stared in the sentimental romantic comedy Pretty Woman. The film was international hit and Roberts became a household name. But her later films, particularly Dying Young (1991), were of a decidedly uneven quality. After shooting her scenes as Tinker Bell in Steven Spielberg s Hook (1991), Roberts took some time off to repair her personal life.
In 1993, Julia Roberts married country singer Lyle Lovett and then made a successful come-back in The Pelican Brief (1993). But her next two movies in the following year, Pre-a-Porter and I love Trouble proved to be critical and commercial disappointments. Roberts’ bad luck continued when her much-anticipated Mary Reilly (1996) failed at the box office. But her career began to pick up again with Michael Collins and Conspiracy Theory (both 1996). In 1997, Roberts made a successful return in comedy My Best Friend’s Wedding and continued her quick rise in 1999 with Noting Hill and Run-away Bride. Both films helped to further restore Roberts to her status
as the most shining woman in Hollywood. Her biggest success comes from Erin Brockovich. For the excellent performance she made in it, Julia Roberts was given the Oscar for Best Leading Actress Award on March 25, 2001.

In most fairy tales, great and powerful men are often helped to victory by the small and weak. But in the US it has really happened.
Nine-year-old Noah McCullough from Texas, has taken on the role of speaking to the public in support of President George W. Bush’s social security reforms.
On February 25 he signed an agreement with the American Congress to work for the White House as a volunteer. “What I want to tell people about social security is not to be afraid of the new plan,” Noah said. “It may be a change, but it’s a good change.”
Besides this task, he already has a higher goal. He plans to run for the White House in 2032. So far, Noah seems to have a very bright future.
Despite his age, Noah already has his firm opinion on running the US. “I firmly believe that the combination of large business and small governments creates a peaceful and present society because industry can stimulate (刺激) economic growth,” he said.
Noah’s politics do not come from his parents. “He is very patriotic and very republican,” said Noah’s mother, Donna McCullough. “It’s the way he was born.”
Noah’s interest began after a mock(模拟的) election in the kindergarten when he was five years old. Now he has more than 3,000 books on presidential history. He can recite the names of all 43 American presidents. He can also describe the achievements and events that took place during a president’s term of office.
His unusual experiences in the presidential campaign last year made him a famous figure. He was a member of Bush’s presidential campaign team. He gave speeches at the Republican convention (大会) and followed Bush around on his tour of 27 states. President Bush thinks highly of the boy, saying that he is “the miracle kid of the White House”.

C. Bush had known Noah well before the presidential campaign began

Because of the stress and strains of modern life folks today would rather watch television than get together with neighbors. Their behavior doesn’t mirror TV soap operas like Coronation Street and Enders.
The Street’s Ashley Peacock and Toyah Battersby know all their neighbours. But Royal Mail survey shows that real-life under-35s wouldn’t dream of popping next door a chat or to borrow a cup of sugar.
Three out of ten say they wouldn’t know their neighbours if they saw them in street. The same proportion would only offer to help neighbours if absolutely
necessary, while 31 percent don’t want to get to know them better. Twenty-six percent rarely or never speak to the person next door. Thirty-five percent only talk to neighbours occasionally, and six percent actively dislike them. The older generation is still sociable, with 70 percent of over-55s taking time to chat to people next door. The report says: “In the past, the British tradition of village green gossip (闲聊) between neighbours was celebrated world wide. But there’s been a clear shift away from local links by the young generation.” Londoners are least likely to be neighbours, with a third rarely or never chatting over the garden fence. People in the Midlands--where 65 percent often speak to their neighbours—are most friendly.
Sociologist Jane Blakeman said: “People are working longer hours than ever before, and are traveling further to work. It leaves them far less time at home.”
48. It can be inferred that Ashley Peacock and Toyah Battersby are both .
A. important roles in a popular TV series B. famous stars in TV programmes
C. old soap operas D. members of royal family
49.Gossip among neighbours is still common among .
A. people under 35 B. people between 35 and 55

50. There is a difference between London and the rest of Britain mainly in that non-Londoners .
A. would help their neighbours only when necessary
B. are less likely to have good relations with their neighbors
C. wouldn’t travel far and find more time to chat with neighbours
D. are more likely to keep up the old British tradition of having a chat over garden fence
