He had made a lot of money in trading with foreign countries. When he was seventy – five, he gave $ 60,000 to the village school to buy land and equipment for a children’s ground.‎ As a result of his kindness, he became famous. Many people came to visit him. Among them was a newspaperman. During their talk, Johnson remarked that he was seventy-five and expected to live to be hundred. The newspaperman asked him how he managed to be healthy at seventy-five. Johnson had a sense of humor. He liked whisky and drank some each day. “I have an injection (注射) in my neck each evening,” he told the newspaperman, thinking of his evening glass of whisky.‎ The newspaperman did not understand what Johnson meant. In his newspaper he reported that Johnson was seventy-five and had daily injection in his neck. Within a week Johnson received thousands of letters from all over Britain, asking him for the secret of his daily injection.‎ ‎21. In general, the woman has to be at home, looking after her children, while the man works outside the home. In fact, in 2014, only 15 percent of all American families resembled the so-called typical American family.‎ Nuclear Family (The Formal Type!)‎ ‎ A nuclear family is considered to be the most traditional family, consisting of a mother, a father, and the children. This family type holds a lot of respect by society, known as the ideal one to raise children. It is believed that children belonging to the two-parent structure families are stable. However, with changing times, it has been observed that the nuclear structure has become less popular.‎ Single Parent Family (Mostly the Breadwinner Parent!)‎ ‎ A single parent is the one who looks after the child without the assistance of the other parent. The child can be by birth or adoption. Single parent families are often the result of death of another parent, divorce of a couple with children, or child abuse. There’s another case where adults who want children but do not have a partner, adopt kids ― usually termed as single parent adoption.‎ Grandparent-led Family (The Wrinkled Affection!)‎ ‎ Lots of grandparents are raising their grandchildren today. Reasons can be varied, like parents’ death, or unfit parents. Many grandparents need to go back to their working phase for finding a source of income to raise their grandchildren.‎ Blended (混合的) and Step Family (Sometimes the Black Sheep Type!)‎ ‎ Two separate families blending together to form a single unit can lead to the creation of a blended or step family. Step families are becoming common in America. Over half of the marriages end in divorce, and many of these individuals prefer getting remarried, thereby creating the step family. It can consist of a new husband, a wife, and their children from previous relationships or marriages. These families have more problems because their kids do not get comfortable, and have adjustment and discipline issues.‎ Extended Family (The More, The Merrier!)‎ ‎ An extended family is the one that enlarges beyond the immediate family, which can consist of grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins and so on, living under a single roof. There are certain advantages to such family groups. The members (especially children) feel more secure and safe due to elder guidance and sharing of resources during a crisis, and have more role models to help maintain desired etiquette and values.‎ Childless Family (Child-free Companions!)‎ ‎ While most people think of family as including children, there are couples who are very young and intend to have children later, or those who cannot, or choose not to have children. This type is also called the “forgotten family”, as it does not meet the set in definition of family. It has been observed that many of the childless families own pets or have external contacts with their nieces and nephews as a substitute for having their own children.‎ As you can see, there are various family structures. The American society tends to promote the traditional family through various media; children who fall under other categories may feel that theirs is not a real family. They may get self-conscious about being part of a family which is “different”. In some cases, they might face social challenges, too.‎ ‎25. All of the following may contribute to a single parent family EXCEPT .‎ ‎ A. a broken marriage B. a bad-tempered parent ‎ C. the death of one parent D. a single adult adopting a child ‎26. According to the passage, in grandparent-led families, .‎ ‎ A. the children gain more respect from society ‎ B. the children face more challenges in society ‎ C. the “parents” give more guidance to children ‎ D. the “parents” have to work again to raise children ‎27. What kind of family is most likely to keep a pet?‎ ‎ A. A nuclear family. B. An extended family.‎ ‎ C. A childless family. D. A step family.‎ ‎28. What might be the best title for the passage?[来源:Z_xx_k.Com]‎ ‎ A. Life in a typical American family ‎ B. Types of family structures in America ‎ C. Family structures matter a lot in America ‎ D. Different families have different values and needs C When most people talk of a classroom, they think of older people teaching younger ones. But when it comes to learning about high-technology devices, the opposite can often be true. That is what is happening through a program in the eastern American city of Columbia, Maryland. The 50 Plus Center provides free technology classes for adults aged 50 and older. The teachers are often teenagers and even younger children.‎ Myra Stafford is 73 years old. She signed up for the workshop to learn how to use her iPad. Ms. Stafford says she is learning quickly about the device and that she enjoys learning from younger people.‎ Eleven-year-old Zhion Perkins teaches Ms. Stafford. He says, “You have to be really, really patient because some of them might not accept the knowledge as smoothly as others.” Meridy McCague, director of the 50 Plus Center, says, “As people are aging, their worlds get a little smaller. Some of them can no longer drive; some of them don’t get out to make long trips to visit their relatives. The program brings them back into Facebook and Skype. Now, they can do everything from ordering things from Amazon to ordering groceries or meals. Teaching senior citizens about technology can prove helpful for the economy. As seniors get more excited about using the technology, they’re going into the market place and buying some products. So that’s a boom in economy right there.”‎ Madison Lam is a 17-year-old teacher of the technology workshop. She says she also learns a lot from helping seniors.‎ Safire Windley is head of the Youth and Teen Center that operates the program. She says young people gain social skills from teaching older residents. This is something they need.‎ ‎29. What can we learn from the first paragraph?‎ ‎ A. Only older adults can be outstanding teachers.‎ ‎ B. Providing free classes for adults is an urgent need.‎ ‎ C. Learning high technology is necessary for children. ‎ ‎ D. The classes’ difference mainly lies in the teachers’ age.‎ ‎30. What is important when the young teach older adults?‎ ‎ A. Responsibility. B. Experience. C. Patience. D. Interest.‎ ‎31. What can be the best title of the passage? ‎ ‎ A. Older people’s worlds get a little smaller ‎ ‎ B. It’s wonderful learning from younger people ‎ C. Teens help seniors bridge technology gap ‎ D. Seniors get excited about using high-tech devices D For most people, shopping is still a matter of wandering down the street or loading a cart in a shopping mall. Soon, that will change. Electronic commerce (trade) is growing fast and will soon bring people more choices. There will, however, be a cost: protecting the consumer from being cheated will be harder. Many governments therefore want to apply street regulations to the electronic world. But politicians would be wiser to see cyberspace as a basis for a new era of corporate self-regulation.‎ Consumers in rich countries have grown used to the idea that the government takes responsibility for everything from the stability of the banks to the safety of the drugs or their rights to refund when goods are faulty. But governments cannot enforce national laws on businesses whose only presence is on the screen. Even in a country where a clear right to compensation exists, the on-line customer in Tokyo, say, can hardly go to New York to get a refund (退款) for a clothes purchase.‎ One answer is for government to cooperate more: to recognize each other’s rules. But that requires years of work and volumes of detailed rules. And plenty of countries have rules too fanciful (稀有的) for sober countries to accept. There is, however, another choice. Let the electronic businesses do the regulation themselves. They do, after all, have a self-interest in doing so.‎ In electronic commerce, a reputation for honest dealing will be a valuable competitive asset. Governments, too, may compete to be trusted. For instance, customers ordering medicines on-line may prefer to buy from the United States because they trust the rigorous screening of the Food and Drug Administration; or they may decide that the FDA’s rules are too strict, and buy from Switzerland instead.‎ Customers will still need to use their judgment, but precisely because the technology is new, electronic shoppers are likely for a while to be a lot more cautious than customers of the normal sort. And the new technology will also make it easier for them to complain when a company lets them down. In this way, at least, the advent(出现) of cyberspace may argue for fewer consumer protection laws, not more.‎ ‎32. In case an electronic shopper bought faulty goods from a foreign country, what could he do?‎ A. Refuse to pay for the purchase. B. Go to the seller and ask for a refund. ‎ C. Appeal to consumer protection law. D. Complain about it on the Internet.‎ ‎33. In the author’s view, businesses would place a high emphasis on honest dealing because in the electronic world _______.‎ A. international cooperation would be much more frequent B. consumers could easily seek government protection C. a good reputation is a great advantage in competition D. it would be easy for consumers to complain ‎34. We can infer from the passage that in licensing new drugs the FDA in the United States is______.‎ A. very quick B. very cautious C. very slow D. rather careless[来源:学|科|网Z|X|X|K]‎ ‎35. According to the author, what will be the best policy for electronic commerce?‎ A. Self-regulation by the business. B. Strict Consumer protection laws. ‎ C. Close international cooperation. D.
