Many people face controversial (有争议的)subjects by directly stating their opinions, regardless of the reactions of the audience. But this is ineffective!
Why? Because, for an argument to work, there has to be 26 . If a message is too blunt(生硬的),then the audience has a 27 to "tune out" ——-—- they are too angry to 28 paying attention to what you say. As they stop listening, communication has 29 .
Well, the best way to 30 a controversial subject is to use a method called "proof-to-claim" —you state the controversial point of your message 31 you have given all the information that supports the claim.
This 32 you to communicate your reasons before your audience get angry. In fact, by holding off on the controversial claim, your message becomes more 33 .
Sometimes 34 English teachers scream, "Your opinion has to come at the beginning of your argument!" Well, if you feel a little uncomfortable 35 your claim until the end, you can use a technique: Be 36 in the beginning.
By "vague," you can tell your audience what you are arguing about, 37 what you are arguing for. For example, let's say that you are speaking to a group of gun owners about gun 38 — if you say, "I think we should ban all handguns," you probably will not be able to get another 39 out. However, if you started by saying, "I think 40 needs to be done about gun control" you have let your audience know what your 41 is (so they won't be confused). Thus you will find you have more of a chance of 42 your information without any "emotional roadblocks".
43 that the thinking behind the advice is to 44 communication! Structure your message, so that your listeners get the information they need to make a (an) 45 decision.

Expensive and new gloves allow chatterboxes (话匣子) to take the term “handsfree” to a new level—by talking into them as they make a call. The gloves are known as “Talk to the Hand” and cost £1,000 a pair. They fixed a speaker unit into the thumb and a microphone into the little finger that can be connected to any mobile handset using Bluetooth.
Artist Sean Miles designed the new gloves that double as a phone in part of his project that shows the possibilities of gadget (小玩意) recycling. He uses outdated gloves and combines them with parts from mobile handsets recycled through O2, which commissioned (承担) the project. Mobile phone users will be able to keep their hands warm while they chat without taking their phones out of their pockets or handbags.
Mr. Miles designed two pairs of the new gloves — one in pink and the other in brown and yellow. They will appear in an exhibition this July and visitors will be able to win the gloves. If demand is high, they will then be produced on a larger scale. O2 Recycle, which backed the project, estimates that there are already 70 million unused mobile handsets in the UK. The service pays up to £260 to those who recycle gadgets including phones, handheld consoles (操纵台), MP3 players and digital cameras.
Designer Sean Miles hopes his work will get people thinking about recycling. The 41-year-old said,
“I hope that my ‘Talk to the Hand’ project will get people to think again about the waste created by not recycling gadgets. If a few more people recycle their gadgets rather than send them to trash, I think this project will have fulfilled its aim.”
Bill Eyres, head of O2 Recycle, urges people to recycle their phone responsibly. He said, “There’s a pressing need for all of us to look at outdated handsets, and all the gadgets that we move on from or upgrade each year. Whether they are consoles or cameras, we should think of them as a resource that we need to recycle responsibly rather than throw them away.”
48. The underlined word “O2” in Paragraph 2 is probably the name of ______.
A. an artist B. a company C. a mobile D. an exhibition
49. Consumers can buy the “Talk to the Hand” gloves ______.
A. in the exhibition B. from Mr Miles
C. when they are mass-produced D. after they recycle the gadgets
50. The purpose of the project is to _______.
A. promote the technology of IT B. enable people to talk to their hands
C. raise people’s awareness of recycling D. attract visitors’ attention in the exhibition
51. What is the passage mainly about?
A. New mobiles which are fashionable. B. Outdated handsets which are upgraded.
C. Outdated gadgets which can be used for recycling.
D. New gloves which can be used for making phone calls.

Last year, CCTV journalists approached pedestrians (行人) with their cameras, held a microphone to their mouth and asked a simple question, “Are you happy?”
The question has caught many interviewees off guard. Even Mo Yan, who just won a Nobel
Prize, responded by saying, “I don’t know”.
While the question has become a buzz phrase and the Internet plays host to heated discussions, we ask: What exactly is happiness? And how do you measure it?
In the 1776 US Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson set in writing the people’s unalienable right to “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness”. 235 years on, Wen Jiabao told the nation, “Everything we do is aimed at letting people live more happily.” At National People’s Congress, officials agreed that increasing happiness would be a top target for the 12th five-year plan.
US psychologist Ed Diener, author of Happiness: Unlocking the Mysteries of Psychological Wealth, describes happiness as “a combination of life satisfaction and having more positive than negative emotions” according to US broadcasting network PBS. This may sound straightforward enough, but it still doesn’t explain what determines people’s happiness.
Many argue that happiness is elusive and that there is no single source. It also means different things to different people. For some, happiness can be as simple as having enough cash.
Researchers believe happiness can be separated into two types: daily experiences of hedonic (享乐的) well-being; and evaluative well-being, the way people think about their lives as a whole. The former refers to the quality of living, whereas the latter is about overall happiness, including life goals and achievements. Happiness can cross both dimensions (范围).
Li Jun, a psychologist and mental therapy practitioner at a Beijing clinic, says, “Happiness can mean both the most basic human satisfaction or the highest level of spiritual pursuit. It’s a simple yet profound topic.”
Chen Shangyuan, 21, a junior English major at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, said his idea of happiness always evolves. “At present it relates to how productive I am in a day,” he said. “It might be linked to job security or leisure time after I graduate.”
Then there is the question of measuring happiness. Does it depend on how many friends we have, or whether we own the latest smart phone? Is it even quantifiable?
Economists are trying to measure happiness in people’s lives. Since 1972, Bhutan’s GDP measurement has been replaced by a Gross National Happiness index. It is calculated according to the peoples’ sense of being well-governed, their relationship with the environment, their satisfaction with economic development, and their sense of national belonging.
In 2009, US economist Joseph Stiglitz proposed “to shift emphasis from measuring economic production to measuring people’s well-being”. But is well-being more easily measured?
52. From what Thomas Jefferson and Wen Jiabao mentioned in the passage, we know ________.
A. people’s happiness is determined by great people
B. people’s happiness is an important target for the development of a country
C. people in all countries have the right to ask the government for a happy life
D. people both in China and America are living a happy life
53. According to the passage, the writer may most likely agree that ________.
A. CCTV journalists are concerned about people’s happiness out of sympathy
B. the question has led to heated discussions about who are the happiest people in China
C. Bhutan’s new index shows that people there are the happiest in the world
D. it is not easy for us to decide what determines people’s happiness
54. What does the underlined word “elusive” in the sixth paragraph mean?
A. available B. easy to get C. hard to describe D. unimaginable
55. The best title of the passage is ________.
A. Are you happy? B. The Measurement of Happiness
C. GDP and Happiness D. The Secret of Happiness
D
If humans were truly at home under the light of the moon and stars, we would go in darkness happily, the midnight world as visible to us as it is to the vast number of nocturnal(夜间活动的) species on this planet. Instead, we are diurnal creatures, with eyes adapted to living in the sun's light. This is a basic evolutionary fact, even though most of us don't think of ourselves as diurnal beings. Yet it's the only way to explain what we've done to the night: We've engineered it to receive us by filling it with light.
The benefits of this kind of engineering come with consequences -- called light pollution-- whose effects scientists are only now beginning to study. Light pollution is largely the result of bad lighting design, which allows artificial light to shine outward and upward into the sky. Ⅲ-designed lighting washes out the darkness of night and completely changes the light levels--and light rhythms--to which many forms of life, including, ourselves, have adapted. Wherever human light spills into the natural world, some aspect of life is affected .
In most cities the sky looks as though it has been emptied of stars, leaving behind a vacant haze(霾) that mirrors our fear of the dark. We've grown so used to this orange haze that the original glory of an unlit night, dark enough for the planet Venus to throw shadow on Earth, is wholly beyond our experience, beyond memory almost.
We’ve lit up the night as if it were an unoccupied country, when nothing could be further from the truth. Among mammals alone, the number of nocturnal species is astonishing, Light is a powerful biological force, and on many species it acts as a magnet(磁铁). The effect is so powerful that scientists speak of songbirds and seabirds being “captured” by searchlights on land or by the light from gas flares on marine oil platforms. Migrating at night, birds tend to collide with brightly lit tall buildings.
Frogs living near brightly lit highways suffer nocturnal light levels that are as much as a million times brighter than normal, throwing nearly every aspect of their behavior out of joint including most other creatures, we do need darkness. Darkness is as essential to our biological welfare, to our internal clockwork, as light itself.
Living in a glare of our own making, we have cut ourselves off from our evolutionary and cultural heritage—the light of the stars and the rhythms of day and night. In a very real sense, light pollution causes us to lose sight of our true place in the universe, to forget the scale of our being, which is best measured against the dimensions of a deep night with the Milky Way—the edge of our galaxy arching overhead.
56. According to the passage, human beings ___________.
A. prefer to live in the darkness B. had to stay at home with the light of the moon
C. are used to living in the day light D. were curious about the midnight world
57. What does “it” (Paragraph 1) most probably refer to?
A. The planet B. The moon C. The sky D. The night.
58. The writer mentions birds and frogs to______________.
A. provide examples of animal protection B. show how light pollution affects animals
C. compare the living habits of both species D. explain why the number of certain species has declined
59. It is implied in the last paragraph that _____________.
A. human beings cannot go to the outer space
B. light pollution has destroyed some of the world heritages
C. light pollution does harm to the eyesight of animals
D. human beings should reflect on their position in the universe
60.What might be the best title for the passage?
A. The Magic light. B. The Disappearing Night.
C. The Orange Haze D. The Rhythms of Nature.
With the fall semester upon us, that means it's once again time to buy your textbooks. While buying textbooks every semester isn't avoidable, let's face it.
If available, used textbooks are a great way to save money. While used textbooks might not be as aesthetically (美学)pleasing, they read almost the exact same way as new textbooks. Used textbooks can cost as little as half the price of the new version. While there may be some notes written on the pages, most bookstores make sure they aren't unreadable before selling.
Another trick is to buy international editions of textbooks. Publishers outside of the United States will get the rights to print the textbooks in other countries, and make them at a fraction (小部分) of the cost as the books in America. The book may look different on the outside, and a few of the diagrams may differ, but overall the books are nearly identical.
Buying textbooks online should be a no-brainer at this point. University bookstores cannot compete with online shops like Amazon.com. When buying textbooks online, using a comparison site will allow you to see textbook prices at all of the best textbook shops on the web. Not only will this save you money, it will also save you time.
When you were a kid, your parents always taught you to share. If you can find a few friends in your class that want to share textbooks with you, you can save lots of money. Just make sure you all agree on a sharing schedule before tests so that no one is left without a textbook the night before an exam.
If you don't think you will need your textbooks, you could always check with the library to see if they have an extra copy. You won't be able to check it out, but you can spend as much time at the library as you want with it. For courses that don't emphasize textbooks, this is a great option.

The Influence of Internet
With the rapid development of the Internet, it has been influencing our daily life tremendously. The Internet has transformed our lives and the way we communicate, how we learn, and how we work. And people’s opinions vary in the light of its effects.
Some people are convinced that the Internet plays an active role in our lives since we can benefit a lot from it. Firstly, it is more convenient than ever before for people to search for all sorts of information they need. Meanwhile, the Internet has greatly shortened the distance among human beings, and helps build social bonds between people. What’s more, people can turn to the Internet for help when they have problems.
However, others assume that the Internet has a negative effect on people’s lives. Uncontrolled information on the Internet, such as crime and violence, may do great harm to teenagers. Addicted to paying computer games, some students feel worn out and absent-minded in class. What’s worse, not all the information on the Internet is accurate, which may lead to people
being taken in by false information.
From my perspective, Internet itself is neither right nor wrong. Only if we take the right attitude towards surfing the Internet can we benefit from it. Nobody can hold back the progress pace of the Internet. If we resisted it, we would certainly lag behind others. What we should do is to take full use of its advantages and try to avoid the harms it may bring as well.
