Bea,a fiveyearold girl, was born with a severe illness which means she has to be kept away from other children of her age, because her body is so weak that she would be unable to fight off a common cold.
Bea was diagnosed (诊断) with this disease when she was five months old. Since then, the hospital has become her second home, medicines for food, and all kinds of treatments her friends. Bea received a very special treatment when she was four years old, which would allow her to be like a normal child if successful. After that, she spent two weeks in ICU before living for four months on a separate ward(病房).Bea was allowed home in February but still needed a special tube in her nose

Her parents clean the house from top to bottom every two days and hoover (用吸尘器清扫) each morning to make sure Bea is free from any possible bacteria. Anna,Bea’s mother, said,“She is weak but so strong. We’ve never seen any child stronger than her. It seems as if nothing in the world could beat her. We really hope to send her to school next year.” She used to drive on the local playground, but Bea was only allowed to watch sitting in the car. “It was heartbreaking to see Bea staring at the running and laughing children there. She never stopped fighting the disease. I know she’s dying for such a normal life.”

Growing up in Swaziland,Sara was aware from a young age that some communities are facing big challenges. Since the first cases were reported in 1986,AIDS has
spread at an alarming rate, and today 1 in 4 adults in Swaziland are living with HIV. With so many adults dying, nearly 4 in 10 people in Swaziland are under 14. Life expectancy(预期寿命)now tops a mere 32 years and the nation has the highest infection rate in the world.
During high school,Sara volunteered to teach English to children orphaned (使……成为孤儿) by AIDS. It was her first act of direct service to others. It gave her the chance to use her own education and experience to help others.
Sara didn't stop there. During her gap year, when she had time off between high school and college, she used her background of growing up in Africa to spend four months working with an Irish nongovernment organization,Value Added In Africa, which promotes business links with African countries. Again, volunteering became the door to a new range of experiences and options. Today Sara is pursuing a degree at Carleton College in the US. Her decision to study economics is no accident—she's determined to understand how trade can help developing countries reduce their reliance on aid. By following this career path she hopes she can help her homeland.
Moving to a new place can be hard, but Sara has overcome the challenge of making friends and being accepted—by using her background as a volunteer with lots of local projects and organizations. Once again, seeing the community as a volunteer is helping to introduce her to the local community, explore the area, become familiar with life in the US in a very practical way.
“Having travelled and lived in different cultures I find the most honest approach to understanding a place is to contribute in some way to its community,” she says. “Volunteering in the US has surpassed (超过) her expectations. It's been easy to find amazing and cool events to help out at! Volunteering here is different because the organizations I have met here are probably the most generous with their volunteers.”
24.Why did Sara decide to study economics in college?
A.Because she wanted to help her homeland get rid of poverty.
B.Because she had the idea of studying economics by accident.
C.Because she had decided it since she was in high school.
D.Because she wanted to spend all her life working with Value Added In Africa.
25.What happened to Sara when she arrived in the US?
A.She missed life in her homeland very much.
B.She worried a lot about her future in the US.
C.It was very hard for her to live in a new place.
D.She adapted herself to life in the US easily.
26.What do we know about Sara's volunteering in the US?
A.It was more difficult than she had expected.
B.It was different from her former volunteering.
C.It helped her make her decision to volunteer all her life.
D.It helped her realize how poor her homeland is.
27.What's the passage mainly about?
A.Sara's experience of volunteering.
B.The importance of volunteering.
C.What problems AIDS has brought to Swaziland.
D.Differences between volunteering in the US and Swaziland.

Technology is making life easier for some dairy farmers. They use robotic systems to milk their cows. These systems are designed to reduce labor and increase milk production.
Cows are trained to follow a series of paths that lead to the milking stations. Only one cow at a time can enter the station. Once inside, the cow is rewarded with food. As the cow eats,a robotic arm cleans and connects the animal to the milking machine. A few minutes later, the milking is completed. The gate is lifted. The cow leaves and the next cow enters. The robotic systems are designed to operate twentyfour hours a day. Cows are milked on average about three times a day. Some are milked four to six times a day. The cows wear collars(颈圈) around their necks that identify them to the system. A computer keeps records on their eating and milking. A cow is released from the station if the computer decides it should not be milked. The system also measures the temperature and color of the freshly produced milk.
Milk is thrown away if it does not pass the tests. Cows need two to four weeks to learn to use the robotic milking systems. Once trained, the cows no longer require human assistance, unless something goes wrong.
Professor Plaut heads the Department of Animal Science at Michigan State University. She believes the systems will attract especially the next generation of farmers who are more interested in technology and less interested in working all the time on the farm. Still, she says the price of robotic milking systems will continue to limit their use. Doug Suhr has more than one hundred milking cows on his farm. Last year it became the fourth farm in southeast Minnesota to get a robotic milking system. A recent story in a local agricultural newspaper said the first robot cost $175,000 and the second cost $150,000. Doug says the increase in milk production reaches a high of more than 6kg per cow per day.
28.Under robotic milking systems,______ decide(s) whether a cow is suitable to be milked.
A.the robotic arms
B.the dairy farmers
C.the cows themselves
D.a computer
29.When is human assistance needed during the milking?
A.When the cows enter the milking station every morning.
B.When a robotic arm connects a cow to the milking machine.
C.When the cows are trained to use the robotic milking system in the first two to four weeks.
D.When the temperature and color of the freshly produced milk are measured.
30.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the last paragraph?
A.Since Doug got the robotic milking system, milk production on his farm has increased.
B.The price of milking machines decreases $25,000 every year.
C.Doug has the largest farm in southeast Minnesota.
D.There are four farms in southeast Minnesota that have robotic milking systems
so far.
31.It can be inferred from the passage that ________.
A.the price of robotic milking systems will greatly decrease
B.robotic milking systems are still too expensive to be popular
C.most farmers are too old to use robotic milking systems
D.robotic milking systems don't need to work at night
D
The deep ocean is considered to be anything below the photic zone (透光层),which only extends a few hundred meters down into the ocean's waters, and this huge area is home to all of the deep ocean fish. These fish have special capabilities that allow them to live at high pressures and to survive cold ocean water. Most of these deep ocean fish cannot live in any other environment so not much is known about their behavior.
There is no natural light in the deepest part of the ocean so fish there have different ways of knowing what is going on around them. Some deep ocean fish have very large eyes which have adapted to the darkness. Other fish have feelers (触须) which help them to find food. The angler fish is so named because it has a fishingpoletype object which can move like a worm to attract prey(猎物).
Because there is no photosynthesis(光合作用)under the ocean, any plant matter that fish may need for nutrients has to sink down from above. On the whole, this makes deep ocean fish smaller in overall size and weight but with larger mouths than those who live higher up in shallow water.
Many deep ocean fish have to float around waiting for something to eat to pass by. There are thousands of species of deep ocean fish and most of these are darkly colored to mix into the surroundings so as not to attract enemies.
The further down into the ocean you go,the more you will find different kinds of fish. For example, the bottomdwelling sharks spend most of their time resting on the ocean bottom. They must keep moving at all times so that air can be forced through their lungs. They wait for their prey to come along and suddenly attack them
whenever possible. If these sharks stopped swimming they would die.
32. Which of the following statements about the deep ocean is NOT true according to the passage?
A.It's a hundred meters above the photic zone.
B.The pressure is high there.
C.The water is cold there.
D.There's no natural light in the deepest part.
33.Compared to the fish that live in shallow water, most deep ocean fish are ________.
A.small but heavy B.small and light
C.long and heavy D.small but long
34.We can learn from the passage that most of the deep ocean fish have ________.
A.long feelers B.plants as food
C.large eyes D.darkly colored bodies
35.You would most probably read this article in a journal of ________.
A.fashion B.Science C.entertainment D.health

We paid a visit to many places, like London, Oxford or the Lake District. I learned much about British culture and history in London, where was my favorite. I’m kind to others. I’m willing to help others any time. I know the importance of good manners. In my free time, I like travelling, reading and surfing on the Internet. I have ever organized a charity show to raise money for WWF. And I often plant trees on 5 June, World Environment Day every year.
Earth is our only home. I think it’s our duty for everyone to protect the environment. If we work together, we can make the world a better place.
If I can be a volunteer, I can do many things for our environment. I can save water by taking shorter showers and turning off the tap when we brush our teeth. I can separate waste into different groups so that it can be recycled. I must try my best to make a big difference to the Earth.
Thank you for listening!
