Jolly Joe always arrived at my neighborhood at exactly half past noon. The clang(叮当声) of the bell on his red and black truck was then the sweetest sound in the world. Brightly colored stickers advertising his amazing kinds of treats could be found on all sides of his truck. The whole neighborhood would magically come to life.
Holding a nickel(五分镍币), I’d run to the back of the vehicle, where children were already gathering. Jolly Joe. would jump out of his truck, the sun shining on his chair. He was an older man, short and round, with a pleasant face and a welcoming smile.
I don’t know how, but he knew us all ,by name, as well as which treats we preferred: My
favorite was the Buried treasure. By eating all the ice cream, you'd discover the treasure inside: a lion, a dog or even a funny clown一printed onto a plastic stick..
When it was finally my turn, he'd put his arm deep inside one of the boxes, and pause(停顿)for a moment, a moment , a puzzled look crossing his face. Then, suddenly, he’d pull it out : the Buried Treasure ! I couldn't wait to enjoy the cool, sweet ice cream.
As quickly as he arrived, it was time for Jolly Joe to go , leaving behind laughing, excited children with sticky hands and faces. Soon the sound of his clanging bell would slowly disappear in the distance.
I always hated to see Jolly Joe go, because I knew the rest of the day would be as hot and boring as before. But I took some comfort in knowing that the next day he'd come round the corner at half past noon and once again spread his magic.
21. Jo11y Joe was liked mostly by_______.
A. children B. passengers C.advertisers D. drivers
22. Why did the author like the Buried Treasure best?

After Doctor Christopher Charles finished his degree, he went to Cambodia. There, he studied a serious condition anaemia (贫血症).People with anaemia do not have enough iron(铁) in their bodies. Charles did blood tests on many people. He discovered something shocking-- about ninety 90% of women and children had anaemia. He decided to stay and find a solution.
Charles knew that iron medicine is the usual treatment for anaemia. But it costs too much money. Research shows that cooking with iron pots(锅) could help because it would release iron into every meal. But iron pots are heavy and cost too much. Also, food goes bad if left in an iron pot. So he added a metal bar made of iron to a cooking pot. It did not cost much and it did release lots of iron. However, instead of cooking with it, people used it to hold down papers or support a table with a broken leg.
Finally Charles created the iron fish. Fish are part of the culture of Cambodia. People in Cambodia eat fish every day and they believe that fish are lucky. So people are happy to put the iron fish in their cooking pots. The iron fish has helped thousands of people in Cambodia improve their health, and it has also helped the local economy. People who use the fish in their food miss less days at work. And some people even have jobs from the iron fish.
Though more and more people are using the lucky iron fish in Cambodia, anaemia is not just a problem in Cambodia but a worldwide problem, which affects one in three people in the world. In some places people do not eat fish. But Charles says this is not a problem. “The iron could be in a different form. What is important is that it is right for each culture. Then people will use it, and it
will improve their lives.” he says.
28. Why did Charles decide to stay in Cambodia?
A. He graduated from a university there .
B. He was interested in studying local people in Cambodia .
C. He wanted to find a solution to a health problem with anaemia .
D. He himself was suffering anaemia .
29. What was the problem with the iron bar for treating anaemia?
A. It was too heavy and cost too much. B. It didn’t release iron.
C. It could easily made food go bad. D. People found other uses for it.
30. How did the local people feel about using the iron fish?
A. Angry. B. Puzzled. C. Shocked. D. Pleased
31. What can you infer from the last paragraph?
A. Anaemia is a worldwide problem.
B. The iron fish can be used for treating anaemia worldwide.
C. Fish are important part of the culture of Cambodia.
D. A treatment does not work unless it is acceptable.
D
A credit card that will not work unless it hears its owner’s voice could become an important weapon in the fight against fraud(欺骗).
The card using a built-in voice-recognition chip requires users to give a spoken password that it recognizes. The idea is to prevent thieves from using a stolen card to buy goods online.
A model built by engineers in California packs a microphone, a loudspeaker, a battery and a voice-recognition chip into a standard-sized credit card. The card is the length and width of an ordinary credit card but about three times as thick. The company now plans to make it thinner.
The voice card is based on an earlier Beep-card technology designed to prevent fraud in online deals. The Beep-card has no microphone, but has a built-in loudspeaker to say an audible(听得见的) ID signal through a computer’s microphone to an online server(服务器). By confirming that the signal matches the information in the card, the server can make sure that the user is not simply keying in a credit card number but actually has the card in his hand. The ID code, which only the server knows, changes each time the card is used. This prevents fraudsters recording the beeps, noting the card details and then playing back the audible ID when they key in the details later. But this earlier Beep-card technology cannot prevent illegal use of stolen cards. The new voice card can. The new voice card also doesn’t identify itself by its ID until it has confirmed the real user’s spoken password.
The voice-recognition credit card is powered by a mini-battery. To extend battery life, the electronics have only to be switched on when the card is being used. Pressing a button on the
card’s surface allows one to hear a female voice saying, “Say your password.” If the voice-recognition software proves that the password is real, it sends its ID, which the server then identifies, allowing the deal to continue.
32. The voice credit card is an important invention because______.
A. it can be made cost-effectively B. it can leave voice messages
C . it makes online shopping easy D. it makes fraud difficult
33. What is the problem with the model card?
A. It is too large. B. It is too thick
C. It can’t be used in online deals. D. It doesn’t have a loudspeaker
34. What is the advantage of the new voice card?
A. It recognizes only its owner’s spoken password
B. It doesn’t need to work with an online server
C. It requires less ID information
D. It has a playback function
35. What can we learn from the last paragraph about the voice card?
A. Only female voice passwords could be recognized
B. Further improvement should be made to extend battery life
C. There is no limit to its application
D. Female customers like to use it

作文:
How to save the earth
Hello, everyone! I’m honored to be here to give you a short speech. My topic today is “How to save the earth”.
Now our earth is in bad condition. Global warming is becoming more and more serious. It is humans’ activities that cause global warming. Therefore, it is our duty to save the earth.
What can we do to save the earth? Firstly, we should save energy. Saving energy is another way of saving the earth, so don’t waste anything. Secondly, we can plant more trees to absorb carbon dioxide and fresh the air around us. Thirdly, we should persuade some factories not to pour the waste water into the rivers or the seas in order to reduce the pollution. Finally, we should form the good habit of recycling things and try to live a low carbon life.
Protecting the earth is protecting ourselves .Everybody has the responsibility to protect it. We should spare no effort to make the earth a better place for us to live on..
That’s all. Thank you for listening!
