Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

The Parker Ranch (牧场)
Here visitors can learn about the history and culture of one of the largest cattle ranches in the United States. To see the ranch itself, take the 45-minute carriage tour. Tickets to the carriage tour are $15 for adults and $12 for children under 12. The museum fee is $6.5 for adults and $4.5 for children.
Sea Turtles at Punalu’u Beach Park
Punalu’u Beach Park is famous for its beautiful black sand beach. Green Sea Turtles, an endangered species, inhabit this beach and Hawksbill Turtles, another endangered species, sometimes nest here as well. Swim, relax and enjoy island life, without any charge.

When I was in elementary school, my teachers would always complain about my behavior in class. There was no doubt that I had a great deal of energy, and therefore I was always talking with my classmates and not paying attention to the lessons, which my teacher abominated to see. If you don’t believe me, the comments on my report cards every year can tell the story.
In my third year in elementary school, my teacher wrote, “ Neil should tend to have a more serious attitude towards his schoolwork.” And in my fifth year in elementary school, my teacher wrote, “ Neil is not a bit strict with his work, his compositions as well as his notebook and so on. advanced after-school classes about the universe at the Hayden Planetarium.
From then on, my love of the universe became stronger and stronger. Instead of killing my time in class, I focused my extra energy on the subject that would be bound to become my career. Between the ages of eleven and seventeen, I took about eight courses on the universe. For each one, I received an attractive certificate of completion, signed by both the teacher and the head of the Hayden Planetarium.
We still offer these classes today. And we still give out certificates of completion, which are signed by the teacher and, of course, the head --- me. I am the head of the Hayden Planetarium. I hated every minute of it, digging in the smelly dirt in spring, planting the tiny seeds in rows, and weeding the plants while sweat poured down my face. I wanted to spend the summer with my friends. But instead, I spent every Saturday and my summer vacations working in my mom’s large vegetable garden. Now a third of my small backyard is a vegetable garden, and every year it grows just a bit bigger. When my son Simon was five, his eyes became wide as he helped me pick peas and beans one morning. “Wow! Mom, we have so much free food!” So, thanks, Mom, for knowing more than I did, about how much I would love digging in the dirt. Thank you for teaching me when I was unteachable and for somehow sparking(引发) an interest that would lead to a lifetime joy.

Every year, Americans send millions of tons of food to the landfill (垃圾填埋地). What if you could use all of those rotten vegetables to heat your home? That’s happening in one unlikely laboratory: the Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plan in Brooklyn
The plant’s longtime manager, Jimmy Pynn, shows off the plant’s crown jewels: eight huge, shiny, oval-shaped steel tanks known as digester eggs. Each one contains millions of gallons of black material that’s roughly pea soup. Pynn calls it “black gold”. “The digesters like to be fed like us: three times a day,” he says. “They like to be kept warm, 98 degrees. And that’s what we have these guys for: to make methane(甲烷),which can be used to heat homes or make electricity.”
Right now, what these bacteria are digesting is mostly sewage(污水) mud. But they are being introduced to a new diet food scraps. The hope is that this plant will soon take in hundreds of tons of organic waste from houses and apartments.
“Cardboard packaging, rotten tomatoes, fats, oils, old diary products--those are all great food-stuff for a digester,” says Paul Sellew. “My micro-organisms love that. That’s their five-course meal.”
“Everything in New York City is like big scale when you’re talking about quantities of waste,” says Samantha MacBride. “Right now, it’s all in its infancy. When you’re in an apartment building, to separate out food scraps, it requires a lot of effort and attention,” says MacBride. “It doesn’t have to have unpleasant smell or be inconvenient. But it takes extra work. It’s the first,
what I will call the baby step,” says Paul Sellew. “Because ultimately in New York City, just the restaurants alone, you’re talking well over a million tons a year,” he says.
This new industry is trying to build more plants and digesters to handle all of that waste, says Sellew. The costliest part may be finding good locations in or around the nation’s biggest cities.
