Goodbye to teeth
This all started a few months ago, when I had a dull pain in the back of my mouth, around where one of my wisdom teeth was supposed to be coming in. I thought it was a pain that I could live with for a while.
However, during the next few weeks, the pain became more intense, spreading to my teeth, gums and jaw. I was told I had seven wisdom teeth.
Yes, you read that correctly, seven — three more than a normal person. My first reaction when
I heard was to laugh. It's just my luck. My mouth wanted to do more work than it had to.
Focusing on the positive, one of the great things about having extra teeth is watching people's reactions when they find out. So far, I haven't grown tired of repeating myself.
The extra teeth are also a good excuse for me being tongue-tied. I can now blame it on my overcrowded mouth rather than my slow brain.
Of course, with wisdom teeth come the intellect jokes. My parents say my intelligence comes from my extra teeth and not my hard work. My friends agree that once the teeth are pulled, my brain will be that of a 5-year-old.
I've also thought about how I might profit from this. If only I still believed in the tooth fairy,I could make a lot of cash. Maybe I could sell my extras to someone in need. Advertisement: Seven teeth for sale, unused, in almost perfect condition.
Don't be fooled by my jokes. I am worried about having surgery. I'm also going to be sad to see the Lucky Seven go. I've developed quite an attachment to them over the past two days. Once they're removed, I’ll just be normal again, and who wants that?
24. When the author found that she had three more wisdom teeth than a normal person, she______.
A. found it quite funny B. dealt with the pain calmly
C. was confused and anxious D. kept it secret from others
25. The intellect jokes from the author’s family and friends were intended to_______.
A. persuade the author not to remove her wisdom teeth
B. advise the author to work hard to improve her intelligence
C. make fun of the author in a light-hearted way
D. let the author know why she is often tongue-tied
26. When the author came up with the idea of tooth fairy, she_______.
A. believed that her wisdom teeth would grow back
B. thought she could rely on it to make a living
C. had already made up her mind to make money
D. was deeply aware that the idea couldn’t become reality
27. What’s the article mainly about?
A. People’s different reactions to the author’s wisdom teeth
B. How the author has gotten on with her extra wisdom teeth
C. The author’s ideas for making use of her wisdom teeth
D. How the author has decided to remove her wisdom teeth

A British tourist missing in Peru was seen by a local shortly after he was reported to have disappeared, a charity has said.
Harry Greaves went missing on 7 April after he announced plans to spend a day on a solo mountain walk. The Lucie Blackman Trust said it was using an aircraft without a pilot to search the area around the village of Pisac. Mr Greaves was reportedly seen heading towards the village, although the sighting is unconfirmed. The 29-year-old, who is originally from Bronygarth near Oswestry, Shropshire, was expected to return on 10 April.
Mr Greaves, a furniture maker who lives in Wrexham, arrived in Peru on 20 February, and attended a living course before visiting friends. He had emailed his family twice to tell them how much he was enjoying the visit. Ellen Greaves said a yellow tent spotted on a mountainside was almost certainly not owned by her brother. She said the British Embassy was now assisting, but called for a “more coordinated effort” from authorities. “What we really need is someone to be a central point of contact and coordinate the search and rescue,” she said. “So far it's been Harry's friends — they're doing an amazing job, but they're not experienced in this.”
Relatives have set up a fundraising page to find Mr Greaves, which has raised more than £27,000, exceeding its original £25,000 target. “He is an extremely genuine and caring person who acts from his heart and with pure honesty,” his family wrote on the page.
28. How soon was Harry Greaves expected to get back before he was missing?
A. In one day. B. In two days. C. In three days. D. In four days.
29. What was really needed to rescue Harry according to Ellen Greaves?
A. The help offered by the Lucie Blackman Trust.
B. The money raised by Harry's relatives.
C. The efforts made by Harry's friends.
D. Someone experienced in being central of rescue
30. What does the underlined word “exceeding” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Going beyond. B. Equaling. C. Coming to. D. Achieving.
31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Harry Greaves: a Missing tourist 'spotted' in Peru.
B. Harry Greaves: a good traveler.
C. A very emergent rescue in Peru.
D. The great aid from Harry Greaves’ friends and relatives.
D
When we see men paying attention to their appearance, it’s easy to assume that they’re just trying to get partners. But our research on beards shows that beards probably evolved at least partly to help men strengthen their standing among other men.
Men and women on average look very different from each other – partly thanks to men’s facial hair. And when we see differences between males and females, the explanation often boils down to evolution through sexual selection – the process that favours something that increases mating opportunities.
But interestingly, women don’t seem that interested in beards. While some studies have found that women like a bit or even a lot of facial hair on men, other studies have reported that they prefer the clean-shaven look. The lack of consistent evidence means we can’t conclude that beards evolved because women were attracted to them.
Researchers have therefore suggested that a second type of sexual selection may hold the answer. To reproduce, it’s often not enough to simply be attractive. You also have to compete with the same sex for mating opportunities. The funny, shy guy at the back of the bar isn’t going to stand a chance when competing with his aggressive brothers otherwise. And there’s evidence that beards evolved to help men do just that.
In times with a greater proportion of single men competing for fewer women, beards and moustaches became more fashionable. A man’s ability to grow a thick beard isn’t actually neatly linked to his testosterone (男性荷尔蒙) levels. Despite this, a number of studies have suggested that both men and women regard men with beards as older, stronger and more aggressive than others. And dominant men can get more mating opportunities by frightening rivals to stand aside.
32. What makes men differ from women?
A. Men’s expressions. B. Men’s appearance.
C. Men’s ability. D. Men’s facial hair.
33. According to the Researchers beards ______.
A. differ men from women
B. are preferred to be clean-shaven
C. help a man win sexual selection
D. make the shy guy stand behind the bar
34. What happened when there were more single men but fewer women?
A. Beards were more popular.
B. Men were not aggressive.
C. More men could not get married.
D. People liked dominant men.
35. What do we learn about beards from the text?
A. They are used to attract females.
B. They make men dominant.
C. They interest women.
D. They are not important now.

Millions of people are searching for jobs every day and the number keeps adding up by the minute. The smart people, and there isn’t a lot, turn to the online community for answers and jobs. 36 The Internet has gone through a major revolution over the past few years, and it isn’t the same as it was back in 2005! It lets companies and customers interact. Still don’t get it? I mean it lets companies get their customers’ opinions and give them cash. 37
This is becoming a very popular job because it is really easy to do even if you do not have any education or experience in any work sector or online business. 38 Easy as taking candy from a baby. You start making money the second you join, you only need to have a PC with Internet connection and the most important tool, your brain!
39 The answer is simple!
Companies think that it is smarter to know whether or not the consumer like you, likes their new product before they mass produce it and ship it all over the world. 40 Microsoft is making a new product and they ask the consumers if they like it. If they do, Microsoft will mass produce it and make profits. But if they hadn’t asked and no one liked it, they would have lost a lot of money!
A. Why are companies paying me for my opinion?
B. The rest keep searching with few chances.
C. The first thing is to figure out what you want to do.
D. In other words, online surveys.
E. You simply give your opinion and you get paid.
F. Let’s say for example.
G. You can still get a good job without the Internet.

第三节 书面表达(25分) Possible version
Dear Karl,
I’m delighted to know you will come to China to study Chinese this summer. As for taking exercise after school, here I have some suggestions to share with you.
Swimming in the river or swimming pools is strongly recommended partly because it is hot in summer here, and partly because the places for swimming are easily accessible. In addition, climbing is extremely good for your health and time can be scheduled flexibly. So climbing mountains is also not a bad choice. No matter which you choose, making sure of your safety is the first thing.
If you have any other problems, please contact me without hesitation. I believe you will have a good time during the stay in China. Best wishes!
Yours,
Lihua

W: How long did you have to write your paper?
M: We were given 150 minutes, but I finished in less than half the time.
Text 2
M: Do you cook at home?
W: No, neither my husband nor I cook. We usually go out to restaurants.
M: Oh, I like cooking. My wife is good at cooking, too. I don’t like the food in restaurants.
Text 3
M: Hi, Linda, I want to know something about Canada. I heard that you once lived there.
W: Oh, I once lived in Australia and America when I was young, but not in Canada.
Text 4
M: Think it over carefully. You must have left it somewhere.
W: But the problem is that I have to have it now. I need it to drive home, and when I get home, to open the door.
Text 5
M: I have to pay the telephone bill this morning, and finish my paper by this afternoon.
W: Don’t worry. I asked Mary to pay the telephone bill for you. You just concentrate on your paper.
Text 6
W: Why don’t you sit down? Now, there are several questions I must ask you if you don’t mind.
M: Not at all. Go ahead.
W: What is the purpose of your visit to the United States?
M: I’m going to attend a conference on air pollution. It will be held in the first two weeks of May at the University of California.
W: The University of California?
M: Yes, here is the official letter of invitation.
W: I see. Fine. When do you want to go?
M: I’d like to leave in mid-April if my passport is ready by then.
W: That shouldn’t be difficult. Why don’t you phone me about April 10th? I should be able to give you an answer, then.
M: Thank you.
Text 7
W: Did you see the late night film on television yesterday?
M: The one on Channel 6?
W: No, on Channel 8. It was about a couple who hitch-hiked across the Sahara desert.
M: No, I didn’t. Was it any good?
W: Well, it was quite good, I suppose, but all those miles of sand did get a bit boring after a while. I think I prefer horror films to travel stories or love stories.
M: I went out for a meal with my friends. They took me to a Greek restaurant.
W: Sounds unusual! What was the food like?
M: Actually, I quite liked it.
W: I’m not keen on foreign food myself. I’d rather stick to roast beef or just fish and chips.
M: Yes. I notice you always eat chips! Don’t you ever get sick of chips?
W: No, never. In fact, I’d rather eat chips than bread.
M: Well, I prefer trying new food to eating the same old things day after day.
W: I see. So you won’t be coming to the café at lunchtime with me, then. You’d rather eat on your own, right?
M: Well,…
Text 8
W: Hey, Tom. Do you know what time it is?
M: Um, actually, I don’t.
W: It’s bedtime, Tom! You have to get up early for school tomorrow.
M: But it’s just 10:20…
W: So you do know what time it is!
M: Mum, this show is so fun! Just let me finish watching it.
W: No. You have to go to bed. It’s just a man in strange clothes playing the fool on TV. Don’t waste your time on a show like that.
M: I think he’s the second Chaplin…
W: Whatever, you have two choices. You either turn off the TV and go to bed yourself, or I pick you up and take you there.
M: Oh, mum, just give me ten more minutes. He’s so funny…
Text 9
W: Freedom Travel. How may I help you?
M: Yes, I’d like to make a flight reservation for 23rd of this month.

M: Oh, well, I’d like to catch a return flight on 29th. Oh, and I’d like the cheapest flight available.
W: OK. Let me see. Um, hmm…
M: Yeah?
W: Well, the price for the flight is almost double the price you would pay if you leave the day before.
M: Oh, let’s go with the cheaper flight. By the way, how much is it?
W: It’s only $980.
M: Alright. Well, let’s go with that.
W: OK. That’s flight 1070 from Salt Lake City to New York, Kennedy Airport, changing to flight 90 from Kenney to Helsinki.
M: And what are the departure and arrival times for each of those flights?
W: It leaves Salt Lake City at 10:00 am, arriving in New York at 4:35 pm, then changing to flight 90 at 5:55 pm, and arriving in Helsinki at 8:30 am the next day.
M: Alright. And, uh, I’d like to request a meal without meat.
W: Sure, no problem.

Good morning, everyone. Welcome to the new Sea Life Center at Plymouth. The Sea Life Center is a really exciting place. There are so many things to see here.
Everything is enjoyable. It costs $3.70 for grown-ups,$2 for children and less for over sixties and school groups. It’s open from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm every day except the 25th and 26th of December.
Special attractions include hourly feeding times for all the different animals and fish, and shows in the sea theatre. Someone is always there to answer questions about what you’ve seen. If you are in a group of six or more people, we can give you a special guided tour of the center. But you need to talk with someone at the information desk when you arrive.
The latest attraction is a big glass tunnel you can walk through. All around you, you will see fish swimming –something even over your head. You certainly have the clearest view of the undersea world. Children love it and it’s really amazing for grown-ups, too. When you get hungry, there is a relaxing family dining room serving food.
That’s all. For more information, phone 01743-564219. Have a good time. Thank you.
