We tend to think of plants as the furniture of the natural world. They don’t move, they don’t make sounds and they don’t seem to respond to anything—at least not very quickly. But as is often the case, our human’s view of the world misses quite a lot.Plants talk to each other all the time. And the language is chemical.
Over the years, scientists have reported that different types of plants, from trees to tomatoes, release compounds(化合物) into the air to help neighboring plants. These chemical warnings all have the same purpose — to spread information about one plant’s disease or infestation so other plants can defend themselves. But exactly how plants receive and act on many of these signals is still mysterious.
In this week’s Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers in Japan offered some explanations. They had identified one chemical message and traced it all the way from release to action.
The scientists looked at tomato plants infested by a common pest, the cutworm. The researchers studied leaves from exposed and unexposed plants. They found one compound showed up more often in the exposed plants. The substance is called HexVic.When the scientists fed HexVic to cutworms,it knocked down their survival rate by 17%.The scientists identified the source of HexVic,and sprayed it lightly over healthy plants. Those plants were then able to start producing the cutwormkilling HexVic.Researchers confirmed that uninfected plants have to build their own weapons to fight off bugs and disease. How do they know when to play defense? They are warned first by their friendly plant neighbors.
It is a complex tale, and it may be happening in more plant species than tomatoes. It may also be happening with more chemical signals that are still unknown to us.Further studies are needed to increase agricultural efficiency.
56.How do plants warn their neighbors?
A.They make use of winds.
B.They release some chemicals.
C.They identify the chemicals.
D.They are exposed early.
57.What’s the function of HexVic?
A.It damages the cutworm’s body.
B.It shows up more.
C.It cures the disease.
D.It sprays over healthy plants.
58.It can be inferred from the text that________.
A.there are not chemical signals
B.the phenomenon may be happening in less plant species than tomatoes
C.farmers may benefit from the further studies
D.plants are warned first by their neighbors

Consumers everywhere are faced with the same dilemma:given limited resources, what sorts of purchases are most likely to produce lasting happiness and satisfaction? Recent research has confirmed that experiential purchases tend to produce greater hedonic (享乐的)gains than material purchases.
The reason why experiences improve with time may be because it is possible to think about experiences in a more abstract manner than possessions. For example,if you think back to a fantastic summer from your youth, you might easily remember an abstract sense of warm sunshine and youthful exuberance(生气勃勃),but you’re less likely to remember exactly what you did daybyday.
Material possessions are harder to think about in an abstract sense. The car you bought is still a car, that great new jacket you picked up cheap is still just a jacket. It’s more likely the experience of that summer has taken on a symbolic meaning that can live longer in your memory than a possession.
Purchasing may have a negative impact on happiness because consumers often buy “joyless” material possessions, resulting in comfort but not pleasure. In general, people adapt to experiences more slowly than to material purchase. This can be seen in both negative and positive purchases:hedonic adaptation would result in a positive experience causing more happiness but a negative experience causing less happiness than the comparable material purchase with the same initial happiness level.
Experience, however, seems to be more resistant to these sorts of unfavourable comparisons. It is because of the unique nature of experience. It’s more difficult to make an unfavourable comparison when there is nothing directly comparable. After all, each of our youthful summers is different.
It’s well established that social comparisons can have a huge effect on how we view what might seem like positive events. One striking example is the finding that people prefer to earn $50,000 a year while everyone else earns $25,000,instead of earning $100,000 themselves and having other people earn $200,000.
A similar effect is seen for possessions. When there are so many flatscreen HD TVs to choose from,it’s easy to make unfavourable comparisons between our choice and the others available.
60.An abstract sense in the passage refers to awareness of something ________.
A.you cannot think about
B.you can’t remember well
C.you cannot understand
D.you cannot see or touch
61.If you make an experiential purchase before a material purchase, you may go to________.
A.a theatre before going to a store
B.an exhibition before going to a park
C.a mall before going to a grocer’s
D.a market before going to a restaurant
62.The example of earnings is given to actually indicate________.
A.how ridiculous people are
B.how people feel content
C.how nearsighted people are
D.how people hold prejudice
63.It is implied in the passage that, after their material purchases, people might________.
A.enjoy their ownership of what they have bought
B.pick every fault in the products they have got
C.regret making a wrong decision to buy the items
D.leave what they’ve purchased untouched at home

These days a green building means more than just the color of the paint.Green buildings can also refer to environmentally friendly houses, factories, and offices.
Green building means“reducing the effect of the building on the land”,Taryn Holowka of the U.S. Green Building Council (评议会) in Washington, D.C.,said.According to Holowka, building accounts for 65 percent of total U.S. electricity use.
But green buildings can reduce energy and water use. Also, the buildings are often
located near public transportation such as buses and subways,so that people can drive their cars less. That could be good for the environment, because cars use lots of gas and give off pollution.Green buildings are often built on developed land,so that the buildings don’t destroy forests.
Marty Dettling is project manager for a building that puts these ideas into action. The Solaire has been called the country’s first green highrise building.According to Dettling,“We’ve reduced our energy use by onethird and our water by 50 percent.”
The Solaire cuts energy in part by using solar power.“On the face of the building we have solar panels (光板) which change the sun’s energy into electricity,”Dettling explained.
The Solaire also has lights that automatically turn off when people leave the room.In addition, the building has lots of windows, allowing people to use the sun for light during the day.The Solaire cuts water by reusing it.
Not everyone is eager to move into a green building, however. Some people think that things like solar panels cost more money than more traditional energy sources.Anyhow,Holowka said,“It’s going to be big.”
68.A green building means________.
A.a building that uses no electricity
B.a building that saves energy and water
C.a building occupying less land
D.a greencolored building
69.A green building is often built on an area of land________.
A.which has already been for buildings
B.which has thick forests around
C.where people of high income live
D.where traveling around by car is most convenient
70.When Holowka says in the last paragraph,“It’s going to be big”,she means that green buildings________.
A.will be more comfortable
B.will be more environmentally friendly
C.will become popular in future
D.will take the place of traditional buildings
The Ebola Virus
Currently, the world is facing an epidemic (流行病) due to what is considered to be among the most dangerous viruses that humanity has ever faced — the Ebola bleeding virus. Though there were announcements about experimental treatments that were reported to be successful in terms of treating the virus, people around the world continue to die from Ebola.
Ebola was first discovered in 1976 in Africa, on the banks of the Ebola River, after which the virus has been named. Back then, there were two major outbreaks of the virus, and this is how people learned about it. There exist several strains of the Ebola virus, some of them are deadly to people, and some are not.
The main symptoms of Ebola can appear in a period between the second and the 21st days of infection, but usually it happens on the eighth through 10th day. Among the symptoms that appear in the first turn, one should mention fever and chills, strong headaches, pain in joints and muscles, and general weakness. These symptoms are not too different from those that people usually experience when catching a severe cold, or flu, so victims may even ignore these symptoms, or try to treat them as a common sickness. However, as the virus keeps progressing, a patient develops nausea (恶心) with vomiting, diarrhea, chest and stomach pains, red eyes and rash over the body, severe weight loss, and bleeding from almost all bodily openings.
The virus is usually transmitted either through blood, or through waste. Infection through blood usually takes place if a person consumes infested (受感染的) meat, or even touches it (for example, butchering can also lead to infection). Also, there were cases when people got infected after stepping in waste of infected mammals, mostly bats. The other ways of getting infected is through skin by receiving bodily liquids via tiny openings.
Even though there is no specific cure for Ebola, doctors still try to treat it. In order to diagnose Ebola, doctors usually take tests on such diseases as cholera or malaria, because it is difficult to diagnose Ebola based only on symptoms. After the diagnosis has been made, doctors start treating the symptoms, which includes killing infected cells, electrolytes, blood pressure medication, blood transfusions, oxygen treatment, and so on.
Though Ebola is a highly dangerous disease, it is not likely that it will spread globally. It is most deadly in antisanitary (不卫生的) conditions, which many African countries have an extremely bad reputation for. As for first world countries, even though there is still no universal cure, they are at much lesser risk than African countries. Though the symptoms of Ebola are severe and getting infected is not difficult, with the correct handling of an outbreak, the virus should not be able to spread.

At least 36 people died in a fatal stampede (踩踏事件) during New Year celebrations in Shanghai on January 1st, 2015. The tragedy happened at a crowded square in Shanghai’s gleaming Bund area at around 11:35 p.m.
Most of the injured were young people in their twenties, a majority of them women. There were also college students and children. They were sent to several hospitals for treatment, including Changzheng Hospital, the Shanghai No.1 People’s Hospital, Ruijin Hospital and Huangpu District Central Hospital.
Lack of awareness over safety risk behind public gatherings and loose control at the scene contributed to the tragedy. The disorder at the scene also exposed the deficiency in emergency exercise and safety education. A profound lesson should be learned from the incident. For those areas with high safety risks, the authorities
should have special emergency response plans and make sufficient analysis and assessment, including the arrangement of policemen, volunteers and supporting measures.

答 案
21
that the scientists make…是定语从句, 关系代词that是代表先行词use, 将其置入定语从句中,就得到that the scientists make use;这显然是考查make use of 这一词组。
Losing her new bike made Mary so upset。
no本身就相当于not any,于是排除A。.因此,正确答案D(hardly=almost not)。
24
答案:A。
I have Tom attend the important meeting。其中would rather 后必须跟动词原形,have sb do sth.所以选A。
25
I think/ suppose/believe,do you think/ suppose/believe, you know,of course等删除,从而更容易地选出正确答案。
27
答案:A。
31.A。 What surprised me most“使我最惊奇的事”名词性从句作主语,其谓语动词用单数。
32. D。 A. unless“除非”; B. so“因此”;C. at least “至少”;D. for fear“恐怕”。
A. may not have done可能没有做;B. needn't have done本不必做;C. can’t have done不可能做过;D. mustn't have done一般没有这个结构;结果只有needn't have done (本来不必……)合题意;第三步,兼顾句意:我们本来不必买这么多食物的,既然Suzie不与我们一起吃饭。发现句意完整、通顺;则B为最佳选项。
34.D。考查交际用语。语境是为某某好事而祝贺。句意为“迈克和我将庆祝我们结婚三十年纪念。”“哦,祝贺你们!”A.cheer up “干杯”;B.well done“干得好”; C. go ahead“做吧”; D. congratulations“祝贺你们”。

This passage mainly tells us something about the stampede which happened in Shanghai’s Bund area several months ago, including the reasons why it happened and
the measures authorities should take.
It is now common to hear and read of security problems in public places, which post a serious challenge to the society. In public life, our behavior is in direct or indirect relationship with others, so it is of great importance for us to take public order into consideration. When in public places, we’d better keep away from big crowds.
From my perspective, public places are crowded more often than not. Therefore, a series of prevention measures must be taken to guarantee public order. Besides, the governments should also tighten crowd control measures in order to better protect public safety. Last but not the least, it is high time we should pay attention to our own behavior.
