If we are wise, we accept these failures as a  necessary part of the learning process. But all too often we convey to our children either by words or by actions that failure is something to be ashamed of, that nothing but top performance meets our approval(赞许).‎ Donnie was my youngest third-grader. His  fear of failure kept him from classroom games that other children played excitedly. He seldom answered questions — he might be wrong. He seldom finished his work because he repeatedly checked with me to be sure he hadn’t made a mistake.‎ I tried my best to build his self-confidence. But nothing changed until midterm, when Mary Anne, a student teacher, was assigned to our classroom. She was young and pretty, and she loved children. My pupils, Donnie included her. But even enthusiastic, loving Mary was baffled by this little boy who feared he might make a mistake. ‎ Then one morning we were working math problems. Donnie had copied the problems ‎ with painstaking neatness and filled in answers for the first row. Pleased with his progress, I left his children with Mary. But when I returned. Donnie was in tears. He’d missed the third problem.‎ Mary looked at me in despair. Suddenly her face brightened. From the desk we shared, she got a canister(小筒)filled with pencils.‎ ‎“Look, Donnie,” she said. “I’ve got something to show you.” She removed the pencils and placed them on his desk. “See these pencils, Donnie?” she continued. “They belong to Mrs. Lindstrom and me. See how the erasers are worn? That’s because we make mistakes too. Lots of them. But we erase the mistakes and try again. That’s what you must learn to do, too.”‎ She kissed him and continued: “I’ll leave one of these pencils on your desk so you’ll remember that everybody makes mistakes,  even teachers.” Donnie looked up with love in his eyes and just a glimmer(少许)of a smile.‎ The Pencil became Donnie’s prized possession. That, together with Anne’s frequent encouragement and praise for even Donnie’s small successes. gradually persuaded him that it’s all right to make mistakes — as long as you erase them and try again.‎ ‎21. People who increased their intake over just six weeks developed a healthy glow and appeared more attractive, researchers found. Scientists at St Andrews‎ ‎University found eating them slightly increased yellow and red pigments in the volunteers' skin. They monitored the food intake of 35 people and took pictures of their faces, arms and hands using a sensitive camera at the start, and after three and six weeks. Increasing their intake of greens by 2.9 portions a day was found to make the person look more healthy and an extra 3.3 portions could enhance their attractiveness, when their photographs were rated by others.‎ Fruit and vegetables are rich in carotenoids(类胡萝卜素),which are known to protect against cell damage from pollution and UV rays, and can also prevent age-related diseases including heart disease and cancer. But while it was known eating extreme amounts of certain vegetables such as carrots could turn skin orange,it was not known a small increase was perceptible(被觉察)to others—and was seen as appealing.‎ A camera measured changes to the skin's redness, yellowness and lightness, and found it significantly changed in people who naturally increased their intake. These changes were not evident in three weeks. Using light sensors, the researchers showed these red and yellow hues were linked with the levels of carotenoids in their skin. There are hundreds of carotenoids but those thought to have the most dramatic effect are lycopene(番茄红素)—which gives tomatoes and red peppers their red colour—and beta-carotene found in carrots as well as broccoli, squash, and spinach. Skin colour is also affected by chemicals called polyphenols(多元酚),found in apples, blueberries and cherries, which cause blood rush to the skin surface.‎ ‎29. What do we know from the research?‎ A. And that, scientists said, means an increased flood risk, particularly for the world’s driest areas. The study challenges the idea that global warming is causing dry areas to become drier and wet areas wetter.‎ ‎“In both wet and dry regions, we see these great increases in heavy precipitation(冰雹),” lead author Markus Donat, a climate scientist at the University of New South Wales, told Nature.‎ Donat and his team collected data from 1951 to 2010 on extreme precipitation events from 11, 000 weather stations around the world, Nature reported.‎ In that time, the number of days with “extreme precipitation” increased 1 percent to 2 percent per decade. ‎ ‎“We found a strong relationship between global warming and an increase in rainfall, particularly in areas outside of the tropics,” Donat said in a statement.‎ ‎“Importantly, this research suggests we will see these extreme rainfall events increases at regional levels in dry areas, not just as an average across the globe,” Donat added.‎ Peter Stott, a senior climate scientist at Met Office, told Climate Central that the study’s findings are important, because more violent rainfall and flooding will “challenge our capability to adapt to a rapidly changing climate.”‎ As Nature reported, the research aligns(结盟)with a 2015 study that found global warming has led to a sharp increase in record-breaking precipitation events. Donat told Nature that his study should come as a warning to world governments.‎ ‎ 33. Which of the following is one of the study’s findings?‎ A. Global warming is causing dry areas to become drier and wet areas wetter.‎ ‎ B. Extreme rain events can be expected at regional levels in dry areas.‎ ‎ C. They can leave you embarrassed and without energy. However, crying is a fact of life, and tears are very useful. Even when you’re not crying, they make a film over the eye’s surface. 36 ‎ When tears fall, they reduce stress. But we tend to fight them for all sorts of reasons. “ People worry about showing their emotions, afraid that once they lose control they’ll never get it back.” ‎ ‎37 After we cry, the feelings that caused the tears often disappear,‎ Sometimes people become much stressed and can’t cry. Whatever emotion they are feeling-shock, anger, fear, or sadness is being held back.‎ ‎ But everyone has the need to cry. Psychologist Vera Diamond explains that her treatment often consists of giving people permission to cry. 38 Patients practice crying just to become used to express emotions. She suggests safe, private places to cry, like under the bedcovers or in the car. Crying is a way of ease tension, but people don’t like it when others cry because it makes them tense. 39 And they’ll do just about anything to make you stop. ‎ In certain situations, such as at work, tears are not appropriate. It’s good not to cry during a tense business discussion. 40 You should also act out the whole situation again and be as noisy and angry as you like. It will help you feel better. “And,” she adds, “Once your tears have taken away the stress, you can begin to think calmly of ways to deal with the problem.” ‎ Tears are a sign of our ability to feel. If you find yourself near someone crying, deal with it. And never be afraid to cry yourself.‎ A. They too may be holding back a need to cry.‎ B. They cry for different reasons..‎ C. I take the problem more and more seriously for the following reasons.‎ First of all, as it is known to people, pets make much noise that troubles residents a lot. What’s more, it is widely accepted that animal waste pollutes the environment, which makes people quite uncomfortable. Many owners like taking their pets to public places where they may frighten children or even bite people. The most important is that pets can spread some diseases and this has attracted much attention. Taking all these factors into consideration, I sincerely hope that I can get help from you and expect the media to do something for this.‎ ‎ Yours Sincerely,‎ ‎ Li Hua 听力录音原文:‎ Text 1 ‎ M: I need to use the restroom, but the door is locked. No one is in there because I already knocked on the door. Can you give me the key?‎ W: Well, the restroom is for customers only. You’ll need to buy something before I can give it to you.‎ Text 2‎ M: When does the play start? My ticket says 7:30 p.m.‎ W: Well, that’s when it officially starts. They actually check tickets fifteen minutes earlier. And if you’re not seated when the lights go down five minutes before that, they won’t let you in.‎ Text 3‎ W: I play basketball three times a week. What’s your favorite sport, Patrick?‎ M: I played baseball as a young kid, but I haven’t picked up a bat in years. I’m much more into tennis these days.‎ Text 4‎ M: I wish Uncle Jim wouldn’t talk with his mouth full of food. ‎ W: Well, I love his jokes and that makes up for his lack of manners.‎ Text 5‎ W: How much did you pay for this new fridge? ‎ M: Oh, it was a little over a thousand dollars, plus tax. It was much more expensive than our washing machine, but not nearly as much as our bed!‎ Text 6‎ W: I can’t believe Thanksgiving is right around the corner! Who usually does the cooking in your family?‎ M: My mother and my two aunts don’t let anyone else do anything except for the salad and the drinks. That includes all the sauces, desserts, and place settings. ‎ W: Wow. It sounds like they take Turkey Day pretty seriously.‎ M: Listen, if Thanksgiving were an Olympic sport, they would be kicked out for winning too many gold medals! What about you?‎ W: Well, my parents and I do everything together. It’s better than one person trying to do too much.‎ Text 7‎ W: Oh, there is nothing better than a nice cold glass of ice water on a hot day.‎ M: You know, cold water always gives me stomachaches.‎ W: Really? I’ve never had that problem. I’ve been drinking ice water since I was little.‎ M: Hmm. When I was a small boy, my grandmother never let my mom give me anything other than warm water.‎ W: Even in the summer?‎ M: Yes. Every once in a while, my dad would take me to get some ice cream, but my grandmother was never happy about that. I think it was the sugar that she didn’t like…‎ Text 8‎ M: Is it me, or is it really hard to understand this speaker?‎ W: You’re right. It’s not that he has an accent like some of the other speakers from another country. It’s just that he is speaking too softly. Do you think it would be rude to ask him to turn his microphone up a little bit?‎ M: I don’t think he’s wearing one. Either that or he’s turned it off. ‎ W: That’s crazy. There must be four hundred people here. ‎ M: This part of the conference has turned into such a waste of time. Maybe we should leave and try to find another lecture.‎ W: I can’t do that. I come here specifically to hear this guy’s speech. I think I’ll just go up to him at the end of the speech and try to ask him some questions.‎ M: Good idea. Would you mind if I followed you up there? It might be the only way to get anything out of this hour.‎ W: No problem.‎ Text 9‎ W: Excuse me. Can you tell me where I can find dresses for teenagers?‎ M: Yes, they’re on the left, next to the purses. But don’t you think you should look for something, uh…a bit more mature? ‎ W: Oh, no…it’s not for me. I’m looking for a present for my niece. She’s turning 16 next week, and she’s having a big party.‎ M: Oh, I remember when my daughter was that age. She’s about to graduate college now.‎ W: How wonderful! Yeah, Elizabeth is looking at schools right now. We’ll probably take her on a tour of the East Coast colleges sometime in the fall. She lives with my brother and his wife in Oregon.‎ M: There are some schools there that offer good programs, but they probably don’t get the scenery like we do here on the East Coast. I’ve always liked seeing the seasons change. I went to the University‎ of ‎Pennsylvania. What about you?‎ W: I went to Brown‎ ‎University. ‎ M: Great! So where does your niece want to go to school?‎ W: Oh, I think Harvard, Yale, and the University‎ of ‎Chicago are her top three choices. ‎ M: Well, those are all fantastic schools with a long history, but I think it’s a good idea to take her to see all those places up close and in person. You can’t get a sense of a college until you set foot on campus.‎ W: I couldn’t agree more! Well, I’d better get back to my shopping!‎ Text 10 ‎ Hello, I’m Rachel Joyce. I’m so happy to be here today at the Claremont Library. I’ve traveled all the way from England, and it’s truly wonderful to visit the United States! This is the first stop on my book tour. I’m off to Australia next! Before I take any questions, let me tell you a bit about myself. My new novel, The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy, was recently published in 2014. The book is a companion to my first novel, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, which follows a man named Harold Fry as he goes in search of his old friend, Queenie Hennessy, in hopes of saying goodbye before she dies. The novel was published in 2012. It was almost chosen for the Commonwealth Book Prize and the Man Booker Prize. The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy is Queenie’s side of the story as she waits for Harold. I’ve also written many radio plays for BBC Radio Four, and in 2007, I won the Tinniswood Award for my radio play To Be a Pilgrim. I have also won the UK National Book Award for New Writer of the Year. Before I was a writer, I was an actress in theatre and on TV. I’ll take questions from the audience now.‎
