I spent much time trying to achieve perfection in every aspect of my life. ‎ ‎ I was a happy kid with a lot of friends and a supportive family. But growing up was really 16 and even scary sometimes.‎ ‎ During my childhood, I was constantly involved in something that included people’s viewing my achievements or my 17 . I wanted everyone’s praise and acceptance, but I was my own toughest critic (挑剔的人).‎ ‎ After I graduated from high school, my 18 to be “thin” began to trouble me. I began trying to diet by 19 my food.‎ ‎ In the beginning, I felt great — attractive and successful, almost superhuman. I even thought that I was better than everyone else. What I didn’t see was that I was slowly 20 myself.‎ ‎ People around me began to 21 my weight loss. They said with concern. “You’re losing too much weight.” “Elisa, you’re so thin.” All their words only suggested that I was getting closer to “ 22 ” .‎ ‎ Sadly, I took my physical 23 the first important in my life, 24 that it was the way to become successful and accepted. ‎ ‎ Then I cut down my 25 more and more, until a 26 day consisted of half a teaspoon of nonfat yoghurt and coffee in the morning, and a cup of grapes at night.‎ ‎ But my poor 27 began to cause me to lose 28 . Then one night, like many nights before, I couldn’t sleep, and my heart felt as though it might beat out of my chest. I tried to 29 , but I couldn’t. The beating became so rapid and so strong that I could no longer 30 . What I had done to diet nearly caused me to have a heart attack. I stood up, and immediately fell down. I was really 31 , and I knew I needed help. My roommate rushed me to the 32 , beginning the long road to my 33 . It took a lot — doctors, nurses, nutritionists, food supplements…‎ ‎ And most important, a sense of what was true about myself got back on track with reality. I realized that, with my 34 of trying to be “perfect” on the 35 , I had sacrificed who I was on the inside. What I know now is, we are — each and every one of us — already perfect. ‎ ‎16. Put on a pair of sunglasses, and an instant beauty as a result of balance! The dark lenses cover up any unbalanced oddities around your eyes, and research on facial attractiveness shows a clear link between balance and our sense of beauty.‎ ‎ Secondly, mystery. Many of the quick judgments we form about people come from ‎ looking in the eyes; shade yours, and you’re instantly a more attractive presence. Eye contact helps us form judgments about someone’s intelligence, confidence, and sincerity and sunglasses keep us literally in the dark about forming those perceptions. And it works both ways, because the wearer of the sunglasses feels more mysterious, too.‎ ‎ Finally, it is because of their historical link with sharpness and attraction. We take their existence for granted today, but sunglasses are relatively modern, Brown said. Sales started to pick up in the 1920s, but they didn’t become commonplace until about two decades after that. The way sunglasses were most used prior to their commercialization helps explain their inside coolness, Brown said, because in their early days sunglasses were primarily used during risky water and snow sports, which made them seem “daring and thoroughly modern.”‎ ‎ Soon after that, Hollywood stars of the 1950s and 1960s started wearing sunglasses to defend themselves from being recognized by the public or bothered by paparazzi (狗仔队), whose flashbulbs would often explode violently, Brown said. Anyhow, movie stars’ adoption of them strengthened a sense of romance. Also — and this is more from my own personal research than Brown’s — hang-overs. They’re really great for hiding hang-overs.‎ ‎41. Sunglass makes us look appealing by _____.‎ ‎ A. covering our tiredness B. creating a softer face ‎ C. protecting our eyes D. improving our facial appearance ‎42. The writer believes that Hollywood stars prefer to wear sunglasses _________.‎ ‎ A. to escape the flashbulbs of paparazzi B. to avoid being recognized by the public ‎ ‎ C. to hide their hang-overs D. to be more attractive and romantic ‎ ‎43. Which of the following would Vanessa Brown agree with?‎ ‎ A. Sunglasses cover unbalanced oddities on the face to convey a sense of mystery. ‎ ‎ B. Sunglasses deliver mystery to the observers as well as the wearers.‎ ‎ C. Sunglasses are relatively modern and they became common in the 1920s.‎ ‎ D. Sunglasses were mainly used in risky sports after their commercialization.‎ ‎44. Which of the following best shows the structure of this passage?‎ ‎ (①=Paragraph 1 ②=Paragraph 2 ③=Paragraph 3 ④=Paragraph 4 ⑤=Paragraph 5)‎ ‎45. Which one would be the best title of this passage?‎ ‎ A. Sunglasses are Cool B. Mystery and Beauty ‎ C. Look Better in Shades D. Attractive Sunglasses C ‎ As 17-year-old Sarah Kolar prepared for the first day of her senior year, her mother Jill Kolar felt very aware that it was her daughter's last first day of high school.‎ ‎ The student at Greensburg Salem High School, outside of Pittsburgh, will go away to college after graduation and while Jill feels excited that her daughter will enjoy new ‎ experiences, this last year also seems bittersweet. Sarah feels it, too. To commemorate milestones without causing a flood of tears, Jill and her husband try to keep things light. "We try to make a joke about it, but also draw attention and try to cherish it — no matter how mundane (世俗的)," Jill explains.‎ ‎ The senior year of high school causes teens and parents to experience a flood of emotions — everything from excitement to sadness. And everyone struggles with how to deal with this time of transition as kids turn into young adults.‎ ‎ When Toni Piccinini's oldest child, Page, now 26, was entering her senior year in 2006, Toni realized it was a year of many last times. She wrote down her feelings in a journal and tried to make Page's senior year memorable. These journal entries became the foundation for a book, "The Goodbye Year: Wisdom and Culinary (烹饪的) Therapy to Survive Your Child's Senior Year of High School (and Reclaim the You of You)." "It was really clear that everything happening was going to be the last time," Toni says. "I exposed my weakness and the different things I did trying to deal with the fact that this big part of my life was coming to an end."‎ ‎ While Toni first ignored her emotions, she eventually faced them. She shared what she had learned and gave recommendations by months. In September, for example, she advised that moms join a new social group. "I've been spending so much time fundraising and volunteering and all these things centered around my children," she explains. "Join a new group that has absolutely nothing to do with parenting." Toni Piccinini, who lives in Marin County, California, north of San Francisco, works as a new mother coach — helping women cope with sleep deprivation (剥夺), breast feeding and other challenges of motherhood. ‎ ‎ "Your relationship with your child is cluttered (杂乱) with the past. Your child is not in fifth grade and maybe you're still trying to be the same mom. The physical clutter clearing helps with the emotional clutter clearing, so when June comes along, moms can graduate too," Toni says. ‎ ‎46. The author wants to tell that when Sarah Kolar comes to the senior year.‎ ‎ A. her life will become more colorful B. she will begin to live an independent life ‎ C. great changes will happen to her emotions D. she will prepare for various celebrations ‎47. We know that Toni Piccinini' s book is______.‎ ‎ A. written for children B. intended for teachers ‎ C. about how to make use of our wisdom D. about how to deal with kids' senior year ‎48. When Page was to enter her senior year, her mother______. ‎ ‎ A. felt very exhausted and sad B. felt very relaxed and excited ‎ C. had to face her emotions at last D. found Page liked writing books ‎49. How does Toni Piccinini deal with her emotions?‎ ‎ A. By talking to her children. B. By reading some good books.‎ ‎ C. By asking for experts' advice. D. By participating in social activities.‎ ‎50. What can we learn from Toni' s words in the last paragraph?‎ ‎ A. Mothers should continue their studies. ‎ ‎ B. Mothers should get along well with their kids.‎ ‎ C. Mothers should teach their kids to be independent.‎ ‎ D. Mothers should change their former role as mothers.‎ D ‎ I watch documentaries, not movies. I read history books, not fiction. I use every free moment to accomplish one of the tasks on my never-ending checklist, and I am completely filled with thoughts of productivity. An hour sleeping is an hour wasted. And like the rest of 21st century America, I like it. But this fixation (固恋) on productivity is increasingly destroying character and transforming men into robots. ‎ ‎ New York Times columnist David Brooks warned American University students of this cultural decline in a speech. “We cut off all things spiritual and emotional in a competitive urge to stand out”, he said, “The pressure to succeed professionally, to acquire skills, to do the things you need to do to succeed in an information age economy really became the overwhelming (难以应付的) pressure, and it sort of eclipses the thinking about character and morality. ‎ ‎ Many students happily go to college, viewing it as a next step on their rise to professional achievement. Forcing as many success-building activities into their schedules as they can, they enjoy keeping busy with little sleep. “Today’s outstanding kids are likely to spend their afternoons and weekends shuttling from one skill- improving activity to the next,” Brooks wrote in an article, “We fear failure more than we desire success.” ‎ ‎ A century ago, college was about character building. Today, our characters are in decline. We are experts on economics, material things and professional skills. We fail to discuss and understand relationships, emotions and all things spiritual. Philosophers Karl Popper divided the world into two categories: Clocks and Clouds. Clock problems are those that can be taken apart, examined and solved through deductive reasoning (演绎推理). Clouds cannot be taken apart. Cloud problems represent whole systems that need to be understood in a different way. ‎ ‎ “When we have a Cloud problem, we try to turn into a Clock problem,” Brooks said. And in a reason-centered culture, adding titles to one’s resume becomes a trend. At American University, 85 percent of seniors (and 89 percent of business majors) graduate with at least one practical experience which is often helpful to a student’s future career, but can sometimes draw focus away from academics. ‎ ‎ To prevent the death of man’s character, Brooks urges rediscovering our human natures through falling in love. And by love he means love for a task, job, or another person. “Synchronicity is key to happiness,” he said. Rather than crazily increasing our long lists of accomplishments, we need to lose ourselves in what we do, and success will come on its own. ‎ ‎51. From Paragraph 1, we can learn that people ______. ‎ ‎ A. are controlled by time B. are keen on reading books ‎ ‎ C. are eager to achieve more D. are changing their characters ‎ ‎52. In Paragraph 2, the underlined word “eclipses” means ______. ‎ ‎ A. deletes B. weakens C. worsens D. emphasizes ‎ ‎53. Paragraph 4 is mainly developed by ______.‎ ‎ A. making comparisons B. following the time order ‎ ‎ C. giving examples D. analyzing causes ‎ ‎54. The last paragraph mainly tells us that ______. ‎ ‎ A. love is more important than focus B. the focus on human natures counts ‎ ‎ C. more work contributes to happiness D. success comes from devotion to work. ‎ ‎55. The purpose of this passage is to ______. ‎ ‎ A. raise awareness to character building B. stress the importance of productivity ‎ ‎ C. warn about the pressure to seek success D. criticize students’ desire for achievements ‎ 第II卷 注意事项:‎ ‎1.用黑色墨水的钢笔或签字笔将答案写在答题卡上。‎ ‎2.本卷共6小题,共35分。‎ 第三部分: 写作 第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。‎ ‎ Tell a story and tell it well, and you may open wide the eyes of a child, open up lines of communication in a business, or even open people’s mind to another culture or race.‎ ‎ People in many places are digging up the old folk stories and the messages in them. For example, most American storytellers get their tales from a wide variety of sources, cultures, and times. They regard storytelling not only as a useful tool in child education, but also as a meaningful activity that helps adults understand themselves as well as those whose culture may be very different from their own.‎ ‎ “Most local stories are based on a larger theme,” American storyteller Opalanga Pugh says, “Cinderella, or the central idea of a good child protected by her goodness, appears in various forms in almost every culture of the world.”‎ ‎ Working with students in schools, Pugh helps them understand their own cultures and the general messages of the stories. She works with prisoners too, helping them knowing who they are by telling stories that her listeners can write, direct, and act in their own lives. If they don’t like the story they are living, they can rewrite the story. Pugh also works to help open up lines of communication between managers and workers. “For every advance in business,” she says, “there is a greater need for communication.” Storytelling can have a great effect on either side of the manager-worker relationship, she says.‎ ‎ Pugh spent several years in Nigeria, where she learned how closely storytelling was linked to the everyday life of the people there. The benefits of storytelling are found everywhere, she says.‎ ‎ “I learned how people used stories to spread their culture,” she says, “What I do is to focus on the value of the stories that people can translate into their own daily world of affairs. We are all storytellers. We all have a story to tell. We tell everybody’s story.”‎ ‎56.What is the main idea of the text?(No more than 10 words)‎ ‎_________________________________________________________________________________‎ ‎57.
