I was blind, but I was ashamed of it if it was known. I refused to use a white stick and hated asking for help. After all, I was a teenage girl, and I couldn’t bear people to look at me and think I was not like them. I must have been a terrible danger on the roads. Coming across me wandering through the traffic, motorists probably would have to stop rapidly on their brakes. Apart from that, there were all sorts of disasters that used to occur on the way to and from work.
One evening, I got off the bus about halfway home where I had to change buses, and as usual I ran into something. “I’m awfully sorry,” I said and stepped forward only to run into it again. When it happened a third time, I realized I had been apologizing to a lamppost. This was just one of the stupid things that constantly happened to me. So I carried on and found the bus stop, which was a request stop, where the bus wouldn’t stop unless passengers wanted to get on or off. No one else was there and I had to guess if the bus had arrived.
Generally in this situation, because I hated showing I was blind by asking for help, I tried to guess at the sound. Sometimes I would stop a big lorry and stand there feeling stupid as it drew away. In the end, I usually managed to swallow my pride and ask someone at the stop for help.
But at this particular evening no one joined me at the stop; it seemed that everyone had suddenly decided not to travel by bus. Of course I heard plenty of buses pass, or I thought I did. But because I had given up stopping them for fear of making a fool of myself, I let them all go by. I stood there alone for half an hour without stopping one. Then I gave up. I decided to walk on to the next stop.
21. The girl refused to ask for help because she thought_________.
A. she might be recognized
B. asking for help looked silly
C. she was normal and independent
D. being found blind was embarrassing
22. After the girl got off the bus that evening, she_________.
A. began to run
B. hit a person as usual
C. hit a lamppost by accident
D. was caught by something
23. What was the problem with guessing at the sound to stop a bus?
A. Other vehicles also stopped there.
B. It was unreliable for making judgments.
C. More lorries than buses responded to the girl.
D. It took too much time for the girl to catch the bus.
24. Finally the girl decided to walk to the next stop, hoping__________.
A. to find people there
B. to find more buses there
C. to find the bus by herself there
D. to find people more helpful there

When we give our kids holiday gifts, many of us can’t wait to hear their appreciative cries of “thank you!” once the wrapping gets ripped off. But here’s a tip: You’d be wise not to expect much gratitude from them for what they receive.
Gratitude can make us happier, healthier, and even fitter. But do the kids show their gratitude for the stuff we buy them? All the research I’ve done has convinced me that it won’t happen. One mom told me that when she asked her 16-year-old son to thank her for buying him a cellphone, he said, “But that’s what moms should do.” From a teenager’s angle, it’s a parent’s responsibility to take care of the family. According to Dunham, Yale’s assistant professor of psychology, “When teenagers code it that way, a gift is no longer something given freely and voluntarily”—it’s just mom and dad living up to their obligation.
Parents do have the right to demand good manners and children should thank sincerely whoever gives them something. But kids can’t know how blessed they are unless they have a basis for comparison. And they don’t learn that by a parent complaining that they’re ungrateful. We need to give our children the gift of a wider world view. Show by example that gratitude isn’t about stuff—which ultimately can’t make any of us happy anyway. It’s about realizing how lucky you are and paying your good fortune forward.
You can collect all the charitable appeals and sit down together with the kids to go through them. You set the budget for giving and the kids decide how it’s distributed. Once the conversation about gratitude gets started, it’s much easier to continue all year. Also you can set up a family routine at bedtime where kids describe three things that have made them grateful. When kids go off to college, you can text them a picture each week of something that inspires your appreciation.
Teaching children to focus on the positive and appreciate the good in their lives is perhaps the greatest gift we can give them. And we can all learn together that the things that really matter aren’t on sale at a department store.
25. How do children respond when receiving gifts from their parents?
A. They show no interest in their parents’ gifts.
B. They can’t wait to open their parents’ gifts.
C. They show much gratitude to their parents for the gifts.
D. They take their parents’ gifts for granted.
26. To make children grateful for what they have, parents should _________.
A. live up to their obligation B. ask their children to have good manners
C. teach their children by setting an example D. complain their children are ungrateful
27. What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?
A. No gifts are greater than teaching children to be positive and grateful.
B. Children ought to realize how lucky they are to have considerate parents.
C. Children are supposed to decide how to distribute their own money
D. It is easy for parents to start the conversation about gratitude.
28. What’s the purpose of the author writing this text?
A. To explain the reason why children offer no gratitude to their parents.
B. To give advice to parents on how to help children develop gratitude.
C. To encourage parents to do things together with their children.
D. To remind parents of their responsibility to educate their children.

Why You Should Celebrate Your Mistakes
When you make a mistake, big or small, cherish it like it's the most precious thing in the world, because in some ways, it is.
Most of us feel bad when we make mistakes, beat ourselves up about it, feel like failures, get mad at ourselves.
And that's only natural: most of us have been taught from a young age that mistakes are bad, that we should try to avoid mistakes. We've been scolded when we make mistakes at home, school and work. Maybe not always, but probably enough times to make feeling bad about mistakes an unconscious reaction.
Yet without mistakes, we could not learn or grow. If you think about it that way, mistakes should be cherished and celebrated for being one of the most amazing things in the world: they
make learning possible; they make growth and improvement possible.
By trial and error-trying things, making mistakes, and learning from those mistakes-we have figured out how to make electric light, to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, to fly.
Mistakes make walking possible for the smallest toddler, make speech possible, make works of genius possible.
Think about how we learn: we don't just consume information about something and instantly know it or know how to do it. You don't just read about painting, or writing, or computer programming, or baking, or playing the piano, and know how to do them right away. Instead, you get information about something, from reading or from another person or from observing usually...then you construct a model in your mind...then you test it out by trying it in the real world...then you make mistakes...then you revise the model based on the results of your real-world experimentation and repeat, making mistakes, learning from those mistakes, until you've pretty much learned how to do something. That's how we learn as babies and toddlers, and how we learn as adults. Mistakes are how we learn to do something new, because if you succeed in something, it's probably something you already knew how to do. You haven't really grown much from that success---at most it's the last step on your journey, not the whole journey. Most of the journey was made up of mistakes, if it's a good journey.
So if you value learning, if you value growing and improving, then you should value mistakes. They are amazing things that make a world of brilliance possible.
29. Why do most of us feel bad about making mistakes?
A. Because mistakes make us suffer a lot.
B. Because it's a natural part in our life.
C. Because we've been taught so from a young age.
D. Because mistakes have ruined many people's careers.
30. According to the passage, what is the right attitude to mistakes?
A. We should try to avoid making mistakes.
B. We should owe great inventions mainly to mistakes.
C. We should treat mistakes as good chances to learn.
D. We should make feeling bad about mistakes an unconscious reaction.
31. The underlined word "toddler" in Paragraph 6 probably means __________.
A. a small child learning to walk
B. a kindergarten child learning to draw
C. a primary school pupil learning to read
D. a school teenager learning to write
32. We can learn from the passage that __________.
A. most of us can really grow from success
B. growing and improving are based on mistakes
C. we learn to make mistakes by trial and error
D. we read about something and know how to do it right away

What do the world’s most successful people all have in common?
By examining the work habits of over 150 greatest writers and artists and scientists, the researchers including Standford Professor Jeffrey Pfeffer found that high achievers like Robert Moses turn out to be all alike:
Busy ! Busy!
36 In a study of general managers in industry, John Kotter reported that many of them worked 60 to 65 hours per week—which translates into at least six 10-hour days. The ability and willingness to work difficult and tiring hours has characterized many powerful figures. Energy and strength provide many advantages to those seeking to build power.
Just Say No!
The difference between successful people and very successful people is that very successful people say “no” to almost everything. And that’s what gives them the time to accomplish so much. 37 And focus means saying “no” to a lot of distractions (分神).
Know What You Are!
Ignore your weakness and keep improving your strengths. Don’t waste time exploring skill areas where you have little competence. Instead, focus on—and build on—your strengths. 38
Create Good Luck!
Luck is not magical—there is a science to it. Richard Wiseman studied lucky people for his book Luck Factor, and broke down what they do right. 39 By being more outgoing, open to new ideas, following the feeling that something is true, being optimistic, lucky people create possibilities.
Does applying these principles to your life actually work? Wiseman created a “luck school” to test the ideas—and it was a success. In total, 80 percent of people who attended Luck School said that their luck had increased. 40
A. Spend enough time to improve your weakness.
B. Achievement requires focus.
C. On average, these people reported that their luck had increased by more than 40 percent.
D. They never stop working and they never lose a minute.
E. Busy people are more likely to be lucky.
F. This means knowing who you are, what you are and what you are good at.
G. Certain personality types are luckier because they behave in a way that offers the chance for good opportunities.

I was blind, but I was ashamed of it if it was known. I refused to use a white stick and hated asking for help.
When it happened a third time, I realized I had been apologizing to a lamppost.
Generally in this situation, because I hated showing I was blind by asking for help, I tried to guess at the sound. Sometimes I would stop a big lorry and stand there feeling stupid as it drew away.
But at this particular evening no one joined me at the stop和Then I gave up. I decided to walk on to the next stop. 故A正确。
From a teenager’s angle, it’s a parent’s responsibility to take care of the family.
Show by example that gratitude isn’t about stuff—which ultimately can’t make any of us happy anyway.
Teaching children to focus on the positive and appreciate the good in their lives is perhaps the greatest gift we can give them. 故A正确。
And that's only natural: most of us have been taught from a young age that mistakes are bad, that we should try to avoid mistakes.
If you think about it that way, mistakes should be cherished and celebrated for being one of the most amazing things in the world. They make learning possible; they make growth and improvement possible.
Mistakes make walking possible for the smallest toddler, make speech possible, and make works of genius possible.
So if you value learning,if you value growing and improving, then you should value mistakes.
This five-day-tour to the Top End’s three most popular national parks takes you hiking to waterfalls, swimming in rock pools and spotting crocodiles on a private wildlife cruise. Experience the Top End’s unique culture, spend evenings around the campfire and sleep under the stars at private campsites in a traditional Australian bedroll or a permanent safari tent.
很明显这些活动不适老年人,排除A项;再根据年龄限制Minimum age is 5 years.
There is a possibility of cancellation after confirming if there are not enough passengers to meet requirements. In the event of this occurring, you will be offered an alternative or full refund(退款).
可知要带好防昆虫的设备,选项中只有D项“a spray that keeps the insects away”属于防虫的喷剂。
In a study of general managers in industry, John Kotter reported that many of them worked 60 to 65 hours per week” 可知,成功人士不停地工作。原句中的”worked 60 to 65 hours per week”和选项” never stop working, never lose a minute.”
And focus means saying “no” to a lot of

本句中what matters in life作为动词grasp的宾语。
故A正确。
After buying a cool treat for my daughter我给女儿买了冰激凌,这说明我们一起去了超市。
短语bring in介绍,引进;turn up出现,调高;go by经过;make up化妆,编造,弥补,组成;突然担忧的表情出现在女儿脸上。
短语think about考虑;complain about抱怨;worry about担忧;talk about谈论;我就开始思考我有多少次催促孩子快点。
故A正确。
故A正确。

1.if→whether 考查宾语从句。
2.we→us 考查代词。
5.made→makes
短语in addition to”除了……
10. more→as或as→than 考查比较状语从句的用法。 也可以把more改为as,构成”as…as”句式,表示”像……
One possible version
Dear Editor,
I’m a senior high school student. It’s reported that in China many children in mountainous areas still can’t go to school because of poverty. Last week, our class held a discussion about how to help them to go to school and live a happy childhood.
Here are our suggestions. First, some old textbooks and clothes can be collected and sent to those children so that they can be reused by them. Second, it’s also very important to appeal to more people and social organizations to help and care for those poor children. As far as I’m concerned, we should save some of our pocket money and give it to those children in need. Above all, we should give them respect, never looking down upon them because they are poor.
We’ll really appreciate it if you can, through the English Weekly, increase public awareness of the poor children’s living conditions and call on more people to help them.
Yours sincerely, Li Hua

M:Money is one of the most important inventions because if we didn’t have money there would be no trade. In the past, all kinds of things have been used for money, including gold, seashells and even dead rats.No one really knows when money was invented. It’s believed that coins were invented in China because metal has been used for centuries and we do know that paper money was invented in China too, sometime around the 10th century AD. But it wasn’t until the 9th century that Europe began using money. When it was first invented, there were many different kinds. But now,of course we are heading towards a single, world money.I mean, already the American dollar is used for international trade, and now many countries in Europe use the euro, instead of the franc or mark. However,it will be a long time before there is a single, global currency.
