a beautiful family. His children grew up and moved to different cites. Now, Derek has four grandchildren, and they only visit him during their holidays.
One vacation, Derek was preparing his home for the kids: doing the cleaning and buying food that the children like. But it occurred to him suddenly he lost his favorite watch, a precious present given by his wife when their first child was born. Derek treasured the watch very much, especially after his wife’s death. So he was really upset about losing it.
When he told his grandfather after they came, they promised him they would find the watch.
One girl asked: “Grandpa, do you still have any idea when you last saw it before you lost it?”
“I am not sure, but I think when I was cleaning the back yard!” Derek replied.
After looking for about two hours, they didn’t find it at all. Everybody was pretty disappointed, but they tried to comfort their grandfather.
One grandson went back alone to the back yard to look again. While Derek asked why he was going there a second time, the little boy didn’t answer, he just asked the others to stay where they were and keep quiet.
It was 15 minutes later that he ran to his grandfather. He found the watch!
Derek, together with all the other children, was surprised and asked how he found it. The little boy answered: “I went there alone and sat there without making any noise, and the back yard was so silent that I finally heard the sound of the watch.”
Derek hugged and thanked the little boy.

23.What can we learn from the story?

A recent study of 9- and 10-year-olds in England showed that kids who participated in a philosophy class once a week for 40 minutes over the course of a year improved their progress in math and reading by an average of two months--even though the course was not designed to improve either of these skills. Pretty amazing!
And that’s not all. The kids who came from disadvantaged backgrounds showed even more significant gains. Their reading skills improved by four months, their math by three months, and their writing by two months.
10
英语试题 (共10页)
The study was conducted by the Education Endowment Foundation to test the effectiveness of philosophy intervention to help close the gap between families from poorer backgrounds. More than 3,000 kids in 48 schools across England participated in the weekly philosophical discussions. In a typical session, students and teachers would sit together in a circle to watch a video clip to stimulate their interest in a particular subject. Then after a short period of silent thinking time, they’d split into small groups to discuss questions related to the topic, before coming back for a whole-class discussion.
In addition to the boost in academics, teachers reported seeing some pretty surprising behavioral changes in their students.
“It has been fascinating to see children who are usually quieter developing their thinking and becoming more confident,” remarked one teacher. “Children are much more willing to listen to each other and are able to express their ideas towards each other.” mentioned another.
They also reported changes in their own teaching methods, because as the kids grew more comfortable questioning their teachers, the classroom became a more collaborative environment.
Kevan Collins, chief executive of the EEF, told Quartz that he hopes the study will convince heads of schools to make room for philosophy in their budgets; the program costs schools £16($23) per student to run. Because as Plato put it: “We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light.”
24.The students with disadvantaged backgrounds first showed their improvement in ?
A.reading. B.writing. C.math. D.methods.
25.What is the purpose of the study?
A.To see whether philosophy helps close the gap between different families. B.To find a new way to help the students with their academic performances. C.To encourage teachers to fit their teaching methods into the needs of kids. D.To create a more open and communicative atmosphere in the classrooms.
26.What’s the change in students’ behaviors?
A.They are quieter and more patient.
B.They become eager to persuade others.
C.They can’t wait to answer the questions.
D.They have more discussion and share more.
27.What will probably be the best title for the passage?
A.Schools Should Teach Philosophy B.Philosophy Really Works Wonders C.A Creative Way to Better Teaching D.A Great Improvement in Academics
C
Recently, I have experienced too much politeness which has made me a bit
10
英语试题 (共10页)
scared. The reason why I say “too much” is that I am never used to being greeted at the door of a store and led to the right area to find what I need.
As in more familiar times, one would walk into a department store without being noticed, go up to a shop assistant, and find him or her chatting on a phone. You would wait for a minute or so to ask a question to the person, usually a woman. And she, finally deciding to notice you, would turn around to you and say “Yes?” impatiently and you would ask if her department has a very well-known brand and she would point and say “If we do, they’re supposed to be over there.” and turn back to her phone.
That type of behavior still exists in many stores. But I have noticed another type of assistant from now on. Here is an example about a “scary” bank clerk.
One day, I was on the phone to an incredibly polite bank clerk who could not help me with an online request. He was so upset that he couldn’t do so that I felt him nearly break down. With sadness in his voice, he said I had to go to a nearby bank in person to do my business because they needed me to give them my Social Security number face to face. I said, “not a chance” and hung up, but then I began to worry if I had made him kill himself. I think his name was Gary.
Gray, if you’re out there, think of your mom and you little sisters and don’t do anything crazy. It’s just that I’m not used to politeness from a banker, and I forgive your being politeness.
28.What has made the author scared recently?
A.Being served by sales associates thoughtfully.
B.Talking to a store’s sales associate directly.
C.Being served impatiently by a sales associate.
D.Walking into a department store without being noticed.
29.By saying “not a chance” in paragraph 4, the author means that .
A.he would not give them his Social Security number
B.he needed to change his previous online request
C.he would not go to the bank to finish his business
D.he wouldn’t give the bank associate any chances
30.What can we learn from the article?
A.The author enjoyed being helped when shopping in some stores.
B.The grocery store associate let the author find what he wanted by himself. C.The author believed that the bank associate would kill himself in the end. D.Politeness is shown more in business service than it used to be.
31.What can be the best title for this passage?
A.A polite Bank Clerk B.An Impolite Shop Assistant C.Polite Problems D.Impolite Problems
D
Do you ever practice playing the piano in your mind by tapping on imaginary black and white keys when you have no piano in front of you? It’s not unusual--great pianists like Polish-American Arthur Rubinstein sometimes used to practice in their minds.
For more than 100 years, scientists have been trying to understand how this mental training works. In the 1930s, researchers showed that when you’re imagining
10
英语试题 (共10页)
an action, your brain sends signals to your muscles that are too weak to make the muscles move but might help train the body to perform. Practicing in your head might also create an inner how-to guide for a special skill in your mind.
Sports psychologist(心理学家)have carried out hundreds of studies comparing imagined and real-life practice for actions such as juggling and tap dancing, according to the Popular Science website. Overall, the research shows that mental training works. A 2012 study, for example, compared 32 amateur golfers who tried to hit golf balls into holes to another 32 who just held a golf club in their hands and thought about their swings. Under the same training, both groups ended up doing better and getting the ball about four inches(10cm)closer to the hole.
Visualization has advantages over the real thing: you can do it anywhere, even when injured. It’s safe--a big advantage for people who work in jobs in which there are big problems when things go wrong, such as gymnasts and surgeons(外科医生). And you can practice for longer periods of time in your head because your body can’t get tired. That doesn’t mean it’s easy, however. “We’ve had Olympic-level athletes sitting in our lab, visualizing for two hours,” says Tadhg MacIntyre, a sports psychologist at the University of Limerick in Ireland. “When we’re done, they’re incredibly tired.”
It doesn’t work for everyone, though. “If you’re not experienced in the activity, it can make things worse,” warns MacIntyre. “If you’re trying to visualize a free throw, and you don’t even know the proper way to hold the ball and move, then you’re probably going to practice the wrong skill in your head, and you won’t get better.”
32.According to the text, mental training .
A.can be as effective as physical training B.is good for building up muscles C.can benefit beginners as well as masters D.is suitable for all kinds of skills
33.The underlined word “visualization” in Paragraph 4 probably means .
A.practicing a physical action B.mental training for muscles C.seeing something in your mind D.imagining practicing an action
34.One of the advantages visualization has over the real thing is .
A.it can prevent things from going wrong B.it can be done wherever you are C.it saves you time and energy D.it is simple and relaxing
35.The text is mainly written to .
A.give readers suggestions on how to improve their sports skills B.introduce a variety of techniques that can be used to improve certain skills C.share some information about visualization and its benefits and limits
D.tell readers how to create an inner how-to guide for a special skill in their minds

I would like to answer your questions about the Tomb Sweeping Day in China.
This is a quite old festival, falling in early spring every year, can be traced back to more than 2500 years ago. Therefore, you can say this is a fairly traditional festival in China, and more importantly, it is a day to honor the ancestors, so we are supposed to have one day off from work.
First and foremost, same as most Chinese families, I, together with my parents, would go to the graves to respect my grandfather and the other ancestors. Secondly, sweeping the tombs is a must every year, we would sweep the dirt away, pull the weeds and put bunches of chrysanthemum in front of the tombs. And lastly, quite often as it is spring, our family would go stepping the green to enjoy the early spring scenery.
Do you have similar festivals like Tomb Sweeping Day? What do you usually do on that
day? I am looking forward to your reply soon.

Text 10:
My name is Edward and I can’t believe how lucky I am. We always buy Ferrero Rocher chocolate, so I saw that they had a competition. You had to find tickets in the chocolate boxes and send them in with your name and address. Well, I came across a ticket in a box about three weeks ago and I sent it in. Not long after that, I got a letter from Ferrero Rocher. They said I had won a trip, and I could choose where I wanted to go! This trip is for two people, so my dad is coming, too! I’m going to go to Paris because I like France. I also have a pen pal, Jack, who lives there. I think I’d like to go and visit him. We have to take the trip sometime in the next six months. There’s so much that we need to find out! What will the weather be like and what kind of clothes should we take? And what are some of the best places to visit in France? I’d like to see all the famous tourist sites, but I’d like to see some more ordinary things, too, like shopping centers.
