2015 Was a Warm, Wild Year. What’s Next?
2015 saw things heat up and get out of hand, and not just in politics.
A record warm December raised average temperatures enough to make 2015 the second hottest year on record in the contiguous United States, according to the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration's National Climate Monitoring Annual Report, which was released Thursday.
The United Nations had previously reported that 2015 was shaping up to be the warmest year on record for the whole planet.
Last year was also the third wettest on record in the U.S. and saw ten weather- or climate-related disasters that each caused at least $1 billion in damage in the U.S. and killed a total of 155 people. These include a drought, two floods, five severe storms, a wildfire, and a winter storm.
The average U.S. temperature was 54.4°F, 2.4°F above the 20th century average, and second only to 2012's record warmth. This was also the 19th consecutive year with average temperatures above the average for the century.
Every state reported above-average annual temperatures. The warming was particularly pronounced across most of the eastern half of the country in December, when many places saw temperatures 30 degrees above normal and many records were set.
This mirrored changes seen in the Arctic that month, when temperatures spiked to 50 degrees above normal. Part of this warming was driven by a strong El Niño, or periodic warming in the Pacific Ocean, but some of it can also be attributed to global warming, says meteorologist Eric Holthaus, who was not involved with the federal report.
The analysis comes less than a month after the U.S. and 194 other countries signed an agreement in Paris to more aggressively counter the effects of climate change.
“Even if all the initial targets in Paris are met, we’ll only be part of the way there when it comes to reducing carbon from the atmosphere,” said President Barack Obama at the time. Still, the agreement represented “a turning point” by setting up “the architecture" for doing so, he said.
NOAA's climate monitoring center doesn't issue predictions for future weather, but the agency's Climate Prediction Center does. That team's forecast for the next three months calls for warmer-than-average temperatures in much of the country, although parts of Texas and the Southeast may be a little cooler than usual.
As Lancaster University Professor Gail Whiteman told the Weather Channel, "climate change means extreme weather is the new normal."
56. According to the passage, the warmest year in the U.S. is___________
A.2014 B.2015 C. not mentioned D. 2012
57. According to the passage, which statement is right?_______
A.2015 was the third wettest year on record in the whole planet.

severe storms, two wildfires, and a winter storm.
C.The 20th century average temperature in the U.S. was 52°F.
D.The warming was pronounced across most of the western half of the country in December.
58. The agreement the US. and 194 countries signed aimed to__________
A. reduce carbon from the atmosphere
B. counter effects of climate change.
C. set up the architecture
D.find artificial ways to cool down the extreme weather
59. What does Professor Gail Whiteman mean in the future?
A. Extreme weather will be common in the future.
B. Climate change will be normal.
C. Extreme weather will be normal, if we don’t take measures.

A few things to consider before booking a flight:
With fuel costs rising and airlines finding more fees to impose on travelers every day, airfare isn’t getting any cheaper. Since you can’t drive to all your dream destinations, flying is the only way to go sometimes and, undeniably, the fastest. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to find the most affordable fares and also avoid paying as many extra charges as possible when you plan ahead.
Getting the best fare
Airlines put out their fare sales on Tuesday morning, making this day the best day to book a flight for less.
Fly during the least popular times.
Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday are the slowest days to fly, which means cheaper deals than the rest of the week. You can also find reduced rates on early morning flights, since many people don’t like to get up before the sun to get to the airport. Earlier boarding times can also considerably cut down your chances of getting bumped on an overbooked flight or delayed because of other delayed flights or mechanical issues.
Choose your seat later.
Some airlines charge you to pick your seat when you book online, adding even more to the bottom line of your ticket cost. If you show up early on your travel day, you can still get suitable seats. Some of the best seats get held back until flight day, unless others are willing to pay extra for them ahead of time, so you still have the chance at one of those.
Fly on holidays.
You already know that summer is the most expensive time to fly, and even though most other times are more affordable, the days surrounding holidays can be crazy. Save big if you’re willing to travel on major holidays, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Don’t wait until the last-minute to book.
Many travelers don’t know that there’s a sweet spot for booking and getting the best price on your tickets. Book too early or too late and you could end up paying more than you need to. The best time to book is between three months and six weeks from when you want to travel.
Avoiding extra fees
Airlines will charge for just about anything these days. Some have even toyed around with charging customers for using the restroom. All those extra fees can certainly add up, but there’s no reason to pay them if you don’t have to. Here are some tips to keep money in your wallet once you get to the airport.
Avoid the upgrade it's not necessary.
Sometimes upgrades are free, but mostly you will be charged for seeking a last-minute bump to first class, and the cost can be hefty.
Fly carry-on only.
Baggage fees vary wildly, but almost all airlines charge them and charge big. Why pay for your clothes to fly with you? If everyone in your travel party checks a bag, your bill can be astronomical before you ever even get to your destination. It’s easy to reduce the amount of stuff
you pack: Make sure all your clothing coordinates, so you can take less and still make more outfit combinations, take only two pair of shoes, plan to do a bit of laundry on your trip and bring only travel-sized toiletries.
Pack your own snacks.
Unless you’re flying internationally, it’s rare your flight comes with a free meal. Snacks on the plane are not cheap and almost never healthy. Don’t rely on what’s on the small menu and instead tuck some of your own snacks – granola bars, homemade muffins, fruit and trail mix all make fantastic travel foods – into your bag and eat a lot better, and cheaper, than other passengers.
Do you have a tried and true method of getting the best deal on your flights? Let us know.
60.To save money, which one should NOT be the choice?
A.Early morning flights B.Early boarding times
C. The flights on Saturday D.The flights on Summer holiday
61. According to the passage, which one is right?
A. If you show up early on your travel day, you can get the best seats.
B. You can save big if you’re willing to travel on Christmas eve.
C. You will be charged for seeking the upgrades, and the cost can be high.
D. If you’re flying internationally, your flight will come with a free meal.
62.According to the passage, you can do the things except_____ to avoid extra fees.
A. Use the restroom. B. Tuck your own snacks
C. Fly with carry-on only. D. Avoid the upgrade.

The relationship between exercise and cancer has long both intrigued and puzzled oncologists and exercise physiologists.
Exercise is strongly associated with lowered risks for many types of cancer. At the same time, exercise involves biological stress, which typically leads to a short-term increase in inflammation(发炎) which can contribute to higher risks for many cancers.
Now, a new study in mice may offer some clues into the exercise-cancer paradox. It suggests that exercise may change how the immune system deals with cancer by boosting adrenaline(肾上腺素), certain immune cells and other chemicals that, together, can reduce the severity of cancer or fight it off altogether.
To try to better understand how exercise can both elevate inflammation and simultaneously protect the body against cancer, scientists at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark and other institutions decided to closely examine what happens inside mice at high risk for the disease.
So, for the new study, they began by gathering a group of adult lab mice. These animals generally like to run.
The scientists then implanted melanoma(黑素瘤) skin cancer cells into the mice before providing half of them with running wheels in their cages while the other animals remained sedentary. After four weeks, far fewer of the runners had developed full-blown melanoma than the sedentary mice and those that had been diagnosed with the disease showed fewer and smaller lesions.
They drew blood from both the exercising and sedentary animals and cells from any tumors in both groups. As expected, they found much higher levels of the hormone adrenaline in the blood of the exercising animals, especially right after they had been working out on the wheels but also at other times of the day. The body releases adrenaline in response to almost any type of stressful
experience, including exercise.
They also found higher levels of interleukin-6 in the blood of the runners. This is a substance that is released by working muscles and is believed to both increase and decrease inflammation in the body, depending on where and how it goes to work.
Perhaps most important, they found much higher numbers in the bloodstreams of runners than in the sedentary mice of a type of immune cell named natural killer cells that are known to be strong cancer fighters.
So the scientists repeated their original experiment multiple times, inducing cancer while allowing some mice to run and others to sit. In some of these follow-up experiments, the scientists injected the runners with a substance that blocked the production of adrenaline and gave sedentary animals large doses of added adrenaline.
What they now found was that when running mice could not produce adrenaline, they developed cancer at the same rate as the sedentary animals, while the sedentary animals that had been injected with extra adrenaline fought off their tumors better than other sitting mice.
More remarkably, the scientists determined that adrenaline seemed to be sending biochemical signals to some of the animals’ IL-6 cells, making them physiologically more alert, so that when a tumor began to develop in the affected animal, those IL-6 cells in turn activated the natural killer cells in the bloodstream and actually directed them to the tumors, like minute guide fish.
With these results, “we show that voluntary wheel running in mice can reduce the growth of tumors, and we have identified an exercise-dependent mobilization of natural killer cells as the underlying cause of this protection,” said Pernille Hojman, a researcher at the University of Copenhagen who oversaw the new study. It perhaps provides one more incentive for us to get up and move.
63. The relationship between exercise and cancer has long puzzled oncologists and exercise
physiologists because________
A. exercise is strongly associated with lowered risks for many types of cancer.
B. exercise can both elevate inflammation which can contribute to higher risks for many
cancers and meanwhile protect the body against cancer.
C. exercise may change can reduce the severity of cancer or fight it off altogether.
D. exercise can lead to a short-term increase in inflammation which can contribute to
elevated risks for many cancers.
64. In the first experiment, which one is the most important result the scientists found?_______
A. natural killer cells are much more in the bloodstreams of runners than in the sedentary mice.
B. levels of interleukin-6 are higher in the blood of the runners than in the sedentary mice.
C. exercise such as running seemed to help the mice fight against the cancer.
D. adrenaline can reduce the severity of cancer or fight it off.
65. What does the underlined word “sedentary” mean?
A. run B. move C. sit D. sleep
66.In the follow-up experiments, the scientists found__________ ?
A. the hormone adrenaline has much higher levels in the blood of the exercising animals,
B. how these elements in the runners — their increased adrenaline, IL-6, and natural killer
immune cells fight against tumor.
C. interleukin-6 can both increase and decrease inflammation in the body, depending on where
and how it goes to work.
D. what happens inside mice at high risk for the disease.
67. According to the study, we can infer the fundamental substance to fight the cancer off
is________
A. adrenaline B. interleukin-6 C. natural killer cells D. genes

My mom only had one eye. I hated her… she was such an embarrassment. My mom ran a small shop at a flea market. She collected little weeds and such to sell… anything for the money we needed.
There was this one day during elementary school. I remember that it was field day, and my mom came. I was so embarrassed. How could she do this to me? I threw her a hateful look and ran out.
I wished that my mom would just disappear from this world so I said to my mom, “Mom, why don’t you have the other eye?! You’re only going to make me a laughingstock. Why don’t you just die?” My mom did not respond.
That night… I woke up, and went to the kitchen to get a glass of water. My mom was crying there, so quietly, as if she was afraid that she might wake me. I took a look at her, and then turned away. Because of the thing I had said to her earlier, there was something pinching at me in the corner of my heart. Even so, I hated my mother who was crying out of her one eye. So I told myself that I would grow up and become successful, because I hated my one-eyed mom and our desperate poverty.
Then I studied really hard. I left my mother and came to Seoul and studied, and got accepted in the Seoul University with all the confidence I had. Then, I got married. I’m living happily as a successful man. I like it here because it’s a place that doesn’t remind me of my mom.
This happiness was getting bigger and bigger, when someone unexpected came to see me “What?! Who’s this?!” It was my mother… Still with her one eye. It felt as if the whole sky was falling apart on me. My little girl ran away, scared of my mom’s eye.
And I asked her, “Who are you? I don’t know you!!” as if I tried to make that real. I screamed at her “How dare you come to my house and scare my daughter! Get out of here now!!” And to this, my mother quietly answered, “oh, I’m so sorry. I may have gotten the wrong address,” and she disappeared. Thank goodness… she doesn’t recognize me. I was quite relieved. I told myself that I wasn’t going to care, or think about this for the rest of my life.
One day, a letter regarding a school reunion came to my house. I lied to my wife saying that I was going on a business trip. After the reunion, I went down to the old shack, that I used to call a house…just out of curiosity there, I found my mother fallen on the cold ground. But I did not shed a single tear. She had a piece of paper in her hand…. it was a letter to me.
She wrote:
My son, I think my life has been long enough now. And… I won’t visit Seoul anymore… but would it be too much to ask if I wanted you to come visit me once in a while? I miss you so much. And I was so glad when I heard you were coming for the reunion. But I decided not to go to the school…. For you… I’m sorry that I only have one eye, and I was an embarrassment for you. You see, when you were very little, you got into an accident, and lost your eye. As a mother, I couldn’t stand watching you having to grow up with only one eye… so I gave you mine… I was so proud of my son that was seeing a whole new world for me, in my place, with that eye. The couple times that
you were angry with me. I thought to myself, ‘it’s because he loves me.’ I love you. You mean the world to me.
My World Shattered. I hated the person who only lived for me . I cried for My Mother, I didn’t know of any way that will make up for my worst deeds…

It’s no secret that doing good makes others happy – but did you know it can make you happy as well?
According to a study, people participating in meaningful activities were happier and felt that their lives had more purpose than people who only engaged in pleasure-seeking behaviors.
Try giving these four things to others to start your journey to a happier and healthier lifestyle.
1. Your Time
With a busy life, it can be hard to find any time to give away. However, volunteering your time has great benefits, including making new friends and connections, learning new skills and even advancing your career.
According to a paper about the link between health and volunteering, volunteering is connected with lower instances of depression and reduces the risk of dying by 22 percent.
2. Your Attention
Most of us think we’re good listeners, but according to psychologist Paul Donoghue, most people are aware that others don’t listen as well as they could. In addition, they’re not fully aware that they themselves aren’t listening.
When practicing mindfulness meditation(正念禅修), you focus on what you experience in the moment and let your thoughts and emotions pass through without judgment. Did you know that giving someone your undivided attention helps you also? When done well, active listening strengthens your focus-which is a major part of good meditation.
3. Your Compassion
The psychological meaning of compassion is the ability to understand another person’s emotional state. Compassion differs from empathy(移情) in that those who experience compassion not only put themselves in another person’s shoes, but also want to reduce that person’s suffering.
A brain-imaging study showed that the brain’s pleasure centers are equally active when we give money to the poor as when we receive money ourselves.
4. Your Money
According to an experiment, those who spend money on other people are significantly happier than those who spend the same quantity of money on themselves.
Whether or not you can offer other gifts, donating money helps make real change happen. It represents time spent, compassion and careful attention to the needs of others.

第五部分 书面表达 (满分25分)
阅读下面短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。
Recently the reporters of CCTV 11 made a random survey in some big cities in China among the pedestrians on the correct spelling of some most commonly used Chinese characters, the result of which was completely beyond their expectations.
The expression they used was “embarrass”, which is pronounced in Chinese “ganga”. First, they asked eight students from Grades 4 to 6 in a famous primary school in Beijing, and half of them could write them correctly. Later they came to a secondary school and asked eight students to do the same thing, but this time only three of whom wrote the two characters correctly. What’s more surprising was that they asked five persons who had got master’s or doctor’s degrees to write the same characters, but only two of them could write them correctly. The result was not only terrific but ironic as well. Is it too difficult? Absolutely not!

The passage and the chart above indicate that the application ability of Chinese is decreasing sharply in recent years among young generation while English learning has always been a hot button in China.
Quite a few things give rise to this phenomenon. To begin with, globalization plays a major role in the promotion of the nowadays internationally used language—English, distracting us from studying our own language. In addition, our school are not attaching any importance to the education of Chinese, as a result of which, the lesson hours of Chinese are far fewer than those of English, leading to the fact that students pay more attention to English learning.
In order to change the situation, efforts from government and schools alike should be made. It is essential to set more Chinese lessons and even more importantly, students’ awareness of the study of our own language should be raised. After all, the promotion of our language is the key to the prosperity of our nation’s culture.

W: No problem, sir.

M: As we all know, shopping plays a very important role in people’s lives, and it is many people’s favorite activity, especially for women.

M: Is everything ready for Billy’s birthday party?
W: Yes. I finished making the birthday cake and I put everything on the table. Did you find the party hats?
M: Yes, I did. I put one for each child on the table. I put up the big “Happy Birthday” sign, too.
W: Thanks, honey. Do you think we have enough for the kids to eat and drink?
M: I’m sure we do. Here’s enough food to feed an army.
W: That birthday cake looks beautiful, but you haven’t put any candles on it yet.
M: Thanks for reminding me. I’ve prepared some party games for the children, too.
W: Great. I bought a tape with a lot of children’s songs on it.
M: Hopefully, that will keep everyone happy.

M: What a nice garden! Look at these flowers!
W: That would be a good shot. Can you take my picture here, dear? Please try to get the garden in the frame as well.
M: All right. Would you please stand closer to the flowers? Good. Smile. Say cheese. OK, got it. That’s terrific.
W: Thanks. Could you take one more from this angle?
M: No problem… Got it.
W: Now let’s take one together.
M: Do you know how to set it to take a picture of the two of us?

M: We still have one more day to go before we return home. What do you want to see tomorrow?
W: No idea. We’ve enjoyed both the natural scenery and the city sights. What else is there to see?
M: How about a factory tour?
W: You mean visit a factory?
M: Yes. I heard there’s a large car company nearby that is open to the public every weekend. We can go there to see how a car is made and learn more about the car industry.
W: Good idea! I’ve always been interested in that. How much is the entrance fee?
M: I’m not sure, but as far as I know, most factory tours are free. They are sponsored by the car company providing the tour.
W: Really? What do the companies do that for?
M: I believe most of them think of it as good public relations. They can promote their products and make their company better known.
W: Oh, I see. So, factory tours are good for companies as well as visitors.

Text 9
M: Excuse me. How much is this suit?
W: It’s on sale today for $750. It’s normally $900.
M: Wow, that is pretty expensive! I was thinking that it might be four or five hundred.
W: This material is imported from Italy. It’s the finest in the world, and if you bought a suit made of this material at many department stores, you would pay about two thousand dollars.
M: Uh-huh… but isn’t that the point of coming to a market like this, to get a discount compared to the expensive department stores? Besides, I saw a suit just like this one a few stalls down, and they were selling it for $600. I still thought that was too expensive.
W: It’s possible that the suit you saw was the same color as this one but made of a different material. Unfortunately, our prices are final, and we think they’re the lowest anywhere in the city.
M: Could I try it on first?
W: Of course, sir. The dressing room is down there to your left.
M: Yes, I see it. Could I also take a tie to try on? I’m not actually looking to buy one, but I do want to see how the suit looks on me if I wear a tie.
W: No problem. I’ll have my assistant bring you a few ties that we give our customers for this exact purpose.
M: Great. I’ll be back in a minute… So, how do I look?
W: You look very handsome, sir. This suit is made for you!
M: Thank you. I like it very much. It fits perfectly, and the style will never go out of fashion. The only thing is that I still think it is a bit too expensive. Couldn’t you lower the price by just a little?
W: I’m not the owner of the shop, sir. Otherwise, I might be able to reduce the price.
Text 10
Good evening to you, and a good evening it is! In fact, it’s absolutely beautiful outside. Of course, it’s all due to the winds of March! Yes, if you were outside around 2:00 p.m., you were probably blown right off your feet. We had wind this afternoon that was blowing at 50 mph! You could see large umbrellas from food carts rolling down the sidewalks — a few of them blew right into traffic and caused a few accidents. Fortunately, though, the wind died down to a more reasonable 15 mph by 4:30 p.m.
Now, the forecast for tonight is for the temperature to stay around 60 degrees Fahrenheit with a light breeze — just enough for a light sweater. It should be a clear night, great for all you astronomers and star gazers. Enjoy it while you can because the clouds will begin to roll in again tomorrow, and they will be staying for a while.
Yes, for the next three days, you can expect clouds, the daytime temperature to drop to around 50, and a 90 percent chance of light rain on and off throughout the day. The temperature at night will be about 36-40 degrees, so you should expect some frost in the early mornings. Well, that’s all. Go out there and enjoy a lovely, warm, star-filled evening tonight. Tomorrow, take your raincoat and umbrella as you head out the door!
