Minh Pham was born in Vietnam. He left when he was 21 years old. Minh has been in America for almost two years. There is still much he does not understand about America.
Once Minh was in a grocery store. He saw an old man and an old woman. They wanted a box of cereal. The box was on a high shelf. The man and woman couldn’t reach it. Minh saw a stepladder. He got on the ladder and got the box. He handed it to the elderly couple. They thanked him.
“Where are your children?” asked Minh. “Why don’t they help you buy food?”
“Our children have their own lives,” said the man and woman. “We like to be free to do as we like.” Minh doesn’t think this is right. In his country, children help their parents. Minh gave the elderly couple his phone number. He told them to call him if they needed help. One night they asked Minh to dinner, but they never asked him for help.

For grown-ups, an afternoon snooze(打盹) is often easier said than done. But many of us have probably experienced just how simple it can be to catch some sleep in a gently rocking hammock(吊床). By examining brain waves in sleeping adults, researchers reported in the June 21 issue of Current Biology, a Cell Press publication, that they now have evidence to explain why that is.
“It is a common belief that rocking causes sleep: we fall asleep in a rocking chair soon and, since ancient times, we cradle our babies to sleep,” said Sophie Schwartz of the University of Geneva. “Yet, how this works had remained a mystery. The goal of our study was made up of two parts: to test whether rocking does indeed improve sleep, and to understand how this might work at the brain level.”
Schwartz, Michel Mühlethaler, and their colleagues Laurence Bayer and Irina Constantinescu asked twelve adult volunteers to nap on a custom-made bed or “experimental hammock” that could either remain still or rock gently. All participants were good sleepers who didn’t typically nap and did not suffer from excessive sleepiness during the day. Each participant took two 45-minute afternoon naps, one with the bed still and one with the bed in motion, while their brain activity was monitored.
“We observed a faster transition to sleep in each and every subject in the swinging condition,” Mühlethaler said. “Surprisingly, we also observed a dramatic boosting of certain types of sleep-related brain waves.”
More specifically, rocking increased the length of stage N2 sleep, a form of non-rapid eye movement sleep that normally occupies about half of a good night’s sleep. The rocking bed also had a lasting effect on brain activity, increasing slow brain waves and bursts of activity known as sleep spindles(纺锤体).
Schwartz and Mühlethaler say the next step is to find out whether rocking can improve longer periods of sleep and to find out whether it may be useful for the treatment of sleep disorders, such as insomnia(失眠).
46. What does the June 21 issue of Current Biology tell us according to Paragraph 1?
A. It is more difficult for grown-ups to fall asleep.
B. People today like to sleep in a rocking hammock.
C. Many people nowadays suffer from excessive sleepiness.
D. There comes the evidence to explain why rocking benefits people’s sleep.
47. What can we learn from Sophie Schwartz’s words?
A. Her team aimed to answer two questions.
B. The study is going to benefit babies a lot.
C. The study had been kept secret before finished.
D. People used to believe rocking was bad for sleep.
48. What can we learn about the study?
A. The participants were divided into two groups.
B. The participants had some problems in falling asleep.
C. Twelve adults and children were invited to take part in it.
D. The participants’ brain waves were examined during their nap.
49. What finding was beyond the researchers’ expectation?
A. The rocking seemed to improve participants’ sleep quality.
B. All the participants fell asleep faster in the swinging condition.
C. Some participants couldn’t fall asleep in the swinging condition.
D. Participants had a tendency to sleep excessively in the swinging bed.
50. What do Schwartz and Mühlethaler expect to figure out in the next research?
A. Whether swing can extend sleep time.
B. Whether swing can cause insomnia.
C. Whether swing can change brain waves.
D. Whether swing can benefit memory consolidation.
D
Teamwork is all about working together to achieve a common goal or purpose. Is teamwork out of date? Why it is so hard to effectively conduct teamwork in those things?
One way we employ teamwork in everyday lives is by becoming a parent. It is a parent’s job to teach their children the fundamental skills and give them the knowledge they need to be successful in life. So why is teamwork disappearing in this aspect of our lives? Well in today’s society, we find that more and more parents are experiencing that the teamwork is one-sided thing. According to a 2009 report from the US, there are 13.7 million single parents raising their children in the US and this amount could be due to the fact that parents are not stepping up and taking responsibility for their children or they don’t have the means to, so they leave one parent to do it by themselves. This is a saddening fact, but it reflects that effective teamwork is losing ground in the parenting aspect of our everyday lives.
Another place where teamwork affects us greatly is in our jobs. It doesn’t matter if you are a small or large company; if you have at least one employee and yourself, then teamwork will be present. I have noticed that with the current economic recession(衰退), people are racing to grab jobs but the quality of people work has gone down greatly. It just appears to me that people do not take part in their work anymore. They want to get to work and work as fast as they can, just to receive the paycheck, but their quality standards flew right out the window. This type of behavior is where I think teamwork is losing its ground in the workforce. There are too many people who
want to work independently and forget they are a part of a team.
As you can see, we run into the aspects of teamwork in just about everything we do. Do you believe teamwork is really losing ground in today’s society? I think it is. What’s your opinion?
51.Why does teamwork disappear in the parenting aspect of my daily life?
A. Parents have no time to spare with their children.
B. Parents have no chances to teach their children about it.
C. Many children are often brought up by a single parent.
D. Many children are independent to deal with their matters.
52.Teamwork is losing ground in workforce mainly because _____.
A.workers don’t like to work together with others.
B.workers’ sense is affected by economic recession
C.workers want to prove they are more capable
D.fewer workers are employed to save money
53.The author wants us to believe his opinion by _____.
A. listing some data
B. giving some examples
C. asking some questions
D. analyzing some cases
54.What does the underlined phrase “fly right out the window” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Disappear.
B. Improve.
C. Increase.
D. Matter.
55.What is the author’s main purpose of writing the passage?
A.To show the importance of housework.
B.To introduce how teamwork works now.
C.To tell us the current economic recession.
D.To show his attitude towards teamwork.

Most families in Beijing love to gather in front of TV sets after dinner. But Gao Ning, husband of Huang Xiaoying, and his parents have better things to do. They clean the dishes, laze around (休闲) a bit, change into track suits, put on their sports shoes and leave home.
The 32-year-old man and his wife sweat it out on treadmills(跑步机), go through the severe conditions of a group exercise session or do some stretching exercises under the guidance of personal trainers. And his parents join a group of retired people, most of them in their 60s, in a nearby community park to dance to the rhythms of traditional music. They use the intervals to chat with other members of the group, sharing their joys and pains.
The Gaos represent a growing number of Beijing families that sweat by exercise, especially because of the Beijing Olympics' public fitness drive. Gone are the days when many people considered physical labor as the only way of exercise. More and more middle-aged and elderly people have realized the importance of regular exercise.
“Most of the people who join us for the group dancing sessions suffer from chronic(慢性的) diseases that need a certain amount of exercise as treatment,” said Gao Ning's mother Gao Xiaohua, “It’s a place for us to kill time, too.”
“Paying 1,000 yuan ($146) a year as club fees is a waste of money,” said Gao Xiaohua. “Besides, we don’t need that tough exercise routine.”
Gao Ning said: “I feel relaxed and sort of reborn after a work-out. Without it my days are gloomy and I feel tired. ”
Gao Ning and Huang Xiaoying make about $ 30,000 a year, and pay $200 each annually for their gym membership to get personal trainers for an hour a day.
“It’s money well spent,” Huang said. “After you get all the necessities, money, job and a house, you realize how important health is. Without health, nothing is meaningful.”

One Possible Version:
Li Jin is a high school student, and a classmate of mine. He goes to school by bus every morning. During the rush hour, the bus is often crowded. Li Jin is rather selfish, so he doesn’t think twice about taking one of the priority seats. Even when an elderly passenger is standing nearby, he doesn’t give up the seat and pretends not to notice them.
Last weekend, Li Jin hurt his ankle while playing basketball. Now, he has to walk with a crutch, and standing for long periods is painful. This morning, he was sad to find that he had to stand on the bus. A young woman in one of the priority seats ignored him completely, and remained absorbed in a book she was reading. Fortunately, this experience has made Li Jin reflect on his own attitude to vulnerable people. In fact, he has determined that he will never again fail to give the priority seat to anyone who is more in need of it.
