第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
第一节 (共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A wet father dialed 999 to ask police for a lift home—because it was raining.
The man was walking along a flyover(立交桥) with his children when the heavens opened.
He shamelessly phoned the emergency service and begged for a lift, threatening to complain(投诉) to police watchdogs unless they helped.
Passing officers decided they would pick up the man and his children and drive them to a bus stop.
A neighbourhood police officer for the area flagged up Sunday’s incident in Shoreham, West Sussex, in a message posted on Facebook.
It read: “At 12.16 pm a male dialed 999 because it was raining and he wanted a lift home. Threatened to complain to the PCC when he was told no.”
A Sussex Police spokesperson confirmed: “A man rang from the Shoreham flyover to say he was stuck on foot in rain on his way home on Sunday, and wanted a lift. A passing police car did give him a lift to the adjacent A283 as he had young children with him. He was then left as he was able
to wait for a bus or phone for a taxi. Clearly, 999 is for public use only in emergencies.”
However, the poor use of public service has been widely blamed.
A Sussex police officer, who asked to remain anonymous(匿名的), said: “Obviously, this is not why people should call 999. He was lucky he was not punished for wasting police time.”
Matthew Sinclair, chief executive of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, added: “It’s ridiculous that this important service was used for such a trivial issue. Taxpayers expect police to spend their time protecting the public from crime(犯罪), not act as a taxi service.”
21.Why did the policemen eventually agree to give them a lift?
A.They were totally wet.
B.The man’s kids were young.
C.They couldn’t afford the taxi fare.
D.Their cell phones were out of power.
22.The reason why the police officer said the man was “lucky” is that _________.
A.people usually couldn’t get away with wasting police time

D.people concerned about the man and his kids
23.Which word below can take the place of “trivial” in the last second paragraph?

The first time I saw him I would never have believed he was going to change my life. 1 had my arms full of books and I was entering the classroom when I ran into something solid. It was a short boy.
He looked up at me, “My, you’re tall!”
Of course, the class began to laugh. Angry, I walked to my seat without a word. Before I knew, the newcomer was standing in front of Mr. McCarthy’s desk, telling him that his name was Carlos Herrera and he'd moved to Galeton from New York.
“Take that seat.” Mr. McCaahy told Carols, pointing to the only empty one, at the back of the room.
Carlos grinned(咧嘴笑). “But I need a couple of dictionaries.”
Again the class laughed, but now they were laughing with Carlos, not at him. He had been here only l0 minutes and already he had them on his side. And before long, he and I became familiar.
One day, he looked up at me seriously with his brown eyes. “I don’t understand why you are so touchy(易怒的).” My face turned red and I said sharply, “You wouldn’t understand.”
He followed me. “I should, Karen,” he said. “You and I have a lot in common. You are too tall, and I’m too short.”
“You seem to get along well.” I admitted. “But what about me? No boy wants to date a girl who is taller than he is.”
“The trouble with you is you’re afraid to be yourself. You’re smart. And you could be pretty. In fact, you might be more than pretty.”
I felt myself turning red.
“I’m getting a great idea,” said Carlos, and right then he suggested being my personal manager.
I wasn’t sure. “W-e-ll—”
Soon after that, he had my new life planned. I was to let my hair grow, wear a fitted sweater and neat skirt, and lift my head and say “Hi” to everyone. I was to volunteer to work on the school paper and go out for dramatics(戏剧表演).
Then one day, he told me about his latest brain waves: he dug up a play which was about a six-foot model who fell in love with a short man.
“You, I suppose, are the short man,”1 said.
He grinned. “And you’re the model.”
“No way,” I cried, “I don’t want to be funny.”
Carlos gave me a pleading(恳求) look. “Karen, I’ve never asked you for a thing for myself, have I?”
He hadn’t. So, I said yes.
Here came the show time. Carlos as the short man and I, the model, were seated at a table. From our talk the audience could tell we were falling in love. That was nothing funny yet. Then as we stood up, the terrible difference in our size became clear. The audience burst into laughter.
The play turned out to be very successful. People poured backstage to congratulate us. Mother and Dad were extremely happy and excited. “I’m proud of you, sweetheart.” mother said.
Carlos threw his arms around my waist(腰). He said, “You are wonderful.” And I said, “Thank you, Carlos, my dear friend!”
24.Why did Carlos say “But I need a couple of dictionaries”(in Para.5)?

C.He worked pretty hard.
D.He was too short to sit at the back.

27.Before Carlos arrived. Karen had been __________ at school.

Like most people born and brought up in a big city, I always believed that carrots grew m trees.
But I’d always dreamed of living in the country. When my husband and I realized that our Toronto house was worth a large sum of money thanks to out-of-control housing prices, we decided to take the chance, sell and buy a piece of paradise(乐园) in a town northwest of the city.
That was four years ago. I and Richard had no experience of living in the country. But at this stage of our lives, it was exciting to begin a new adventure. Besides, my parents were gone, the kids were grown and, to be honest, if I saw one more apartment building go up in my neighbourhood, the top of my head was going to explode.
The first winter in our new home was a difficult one, with more snow falling than in the past 10 years. I learned the true meaning of “cabin fever(幽闭烦躁症)”—when I developed an uncontrollable thought to beat Richard over the head with a stick because I couldn’t stand the sound of the air blowing through his nose when he breathed. We were trapped together 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. A lot! It wasn’t pretty. When spring came I found myself driving to the city at least once every few weeks. I need to hug a tall building. I wasn’t quite used to the new life so well.
But there are so many wonderful things about living in the country. I first realized it would be different when I, with 12 items(物品), went through the express lane(快速结帐通道) at the local supermarket which is for people taking 5 items or less and nobody threatened my life or even gave me dirty looks. People actually smiled at me.
And driving around the countryside is a relaxing experience. I have discovered clouds. I am fascinated by all sorts of lovely birds and wildlife. I’m getting into a new role and a new life and it feels good. Now, I’m at home, the city is no longer where I belong. I’m here forever.
So, there is no doubt that carrots grow in the ground.
28.The author and her husband moved to the countryside when ____________.
A.they retired from work
B.their kids were grown
C.their parents were gone
D.they sold their city house at a high price
29.How was their first winter in the country?
A.Discouraging. B.Frightening.
C.Boring. D.Exhausting.
30.The author shares her experience in a supermarket to show_________.
A.people in the country are nice
B.people in the country lead simple lives
C.supermarkets in the country have a few customers
D.she is cleverer than people in the country
31.What is the meaning of underlined sentence “So, there is no doubt that carrots grow in theground”(the last paragraph)?
A.Carrots can be gathered in the ground.
B.The author is interested in agriculture.
C.The author has totally got used to the life in the country.
D.Carrots are very common in the country.

US spaceman Scott Kelly said he is fighting tiredness but is back to his normal height after nearly one year in space.
Kelly’s 340-day mission(任务)—spent testing the effects of long—term spaceflight ahead of a future mission to Mars, along with Russian spaceman Mikhail Kornienko—wrapped up early Wednesday when they landed in freezing Kazakhstan aboard a Soyuz spaceship.
One of the effects of the spending such a long time without gravity was that Kelly’s spine(脊柱) got longer temporarily, making him grow 3.8 centimeters, only to go back to normal as he returned to Earth.
His twin brother, Mark Kelly, said they were the same height again by the time they hugged in Houston early on Thursday.
According to John Charles, human research program associate manager of international science at NASA(National Aeronautics and Space Administration), any height gain “probably went away very quickly
because fluid(体液) gradually got more and more in the discs between the bones in the spine.”
Kelly also said reports that he had grown a full 5.1 centimeters were exaggerated. “I don’t know where that came from. I did measure myself and it was an inch and a half, so maybe somebody just decided to just round up and write it as a fact,” he told reporters in his first extended media appearance since his rectum.
The details are of great importance because a team of doctors is carefully researching all the differences between Kelly and his twin, who is also a spaceman but who stayed on Earth to take part in the study.
The details of those ongoing studies are secret for now, as scientists will do further analysis and provide their findings for other researches before publishing them.
The idea is to learn more about the harmful effects of spaceflight before NASA green lights any deeper space mission to Mars, journeys that would last a year or more.
32.What made Scott Kelly grow taller after he spent 340 days in space?
A.Loneliness.
B.Low amount of oxygen.
C.The lack of gravity.
D.Harmful effects of spaceflight.
33.What did Scott Kelly mean by saying “the reports… were exaggerated”(in Para. 6)
A.The reports were illegal.
B.The reports were total lies.
C.He was annoyed about the reports.
D.He did not grow that much.
34.The job of Mark Kelly, Scott Kelly’s twin brother, in the study is _______.
A.to comfort Scott B.to compare with Scott
C.to protect Scott D.to take care of Scott
35.Why are the details of the studies secret?
A.The studies are harmful to spacemen.
B.Scientists have not finished their jobs yet.
C.NASA does not permit giving out the details.
D.The studies concern the safety of human beings.

Suppose you have two friends, A and B, both of whom have been learning English for years. Both are clever young men, and both are anxious to master a good knowledge of the language. 36 : A can write short letters and read easy news but cannot read any passage in the classics(经典名著), while B can read here and there in some classics but cannot write short letters or read easy news. 37 ?
I believe you would prefer to be like A rather than B. You should. I am sorry to find that among Chinese learners of English there seem to be more like B than like A. The trouble lies mainly in what is read.
38 ? I mean to ask what you take as your main reading material. Is it a novel or a volume(册) of essays written more than a hundred years ago? If it is, my advice to you is to change it for something else. Your main reading material must have been written far less than a hundred years ago, a few weeks ago if possible, must have been written
in simple English, and must have been written by an Englishman or an American.
39 . But I think I have to make some general remarks. Your main reading material needs not to be a literary masterpiece(文学著作). Nor need it be written by a famous author. A short passage in a magazine is better than a novel or some long essays.
You must have noted that in the above I have talked about only what your main reading material should be. 40 , which may be a little more difficult, but which still had better not be a classic of more than a hundred years ago.
A.Well, what do you read
B.What you read must be very easy for you
C.When you read a short story, you may read it only for pleasure
D.But they got very different results
E.You should also read something else
F.Which of your two friends would you prefer to be like
G.I am not going to give a list of books here

书面表达
My name is Li Hua, and I’m a high school student. I’m writing this letter to make you know me better.
Ever since I started to learn English when I was young, I have been fascinated by this beautiful language, and I determined then I would visit the United Kingdom one day, which was the hometown of English. I often hope to visit University of Oxford, Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey and so on. I particularly wish to go to Oxford, as I always dream of studying there. Therefore, I’m studying very hard in order to realise my dream. What’s more, I believe if I have the chance to visit the United Kingdom, there will be a very good atmosphere for me to practise my spoken English.
I would appreciate it if my application could be kindly approved.
