B
I have a younger brother. To me , he is a fourteen-year-old kid named Joe, with blond hair and blue eyes. To others, he is different. Where I see a kid who just needs a lot more attention, others see a mentally disabled boy, a kid who cannot walk or talk or think for himself. I see someone who just makes daily routine a bit less routine. Others see an annoyance, a bother.
This is not to say that I have never felt resentful(怨恨的) toward Joe. He is my brother, and with that comes responsibility. “Gina, could you stay in tonight and watch your brother?” “Gina, do me a favor and feed him dinner and change his diaper(尿布) later, please?”“Could you come home right after school today and get Joe off the bus?”
These are phrases that I have heard since I was twelve. And sure, they have made me resent my brother to a certain extent. I would think: that’s not fair! Everyone else can stay after and be a member of this club, or get extra help from that teacher. Or, all my friends are going out tonight, why can’t I? And, how come I have to feed him? He is not my son!
However, the small amount of resentment I feel toward my brother is erased a thousand times over by what I have learned from him. Besides making me responsible from a young age, and helping me be more accepting of all kinds of people, he has taught me to be thankful for what I have.
I know that there are moment in my life that I should cherish and that Joe will never experience. He will never laugh so hard that he cries. He will never feel the glory of a straight-A report card. He will never comfort a best friend crying on his shoulder. And he will never know how much his family love him.
Because he will never know, it is up to me to know, every second , how lucky I am. It is up to me to realize that life should be lived to its fullest, and that you should always, always be grateful that God, or whoever are the powers that be, gave you the ability to live your life the way you were meant to live it.
60. We know from the first paragraph that Gina's brother _____.
A. causes trouble to neighbors
B. pays more attention to others
C. lives with mental disability
D. considers daily routine a bother
61. If Mother asks Gina to look after her brother now, what will she probably answer?
A. I'm afraid not. B. No problem! C. It depends. D. It's not fair!
62. The passage intends to tell us that we should _______.
A. value the glory of success
B. appreciate what life gives us
C. comfort unfortunate people

Even as Google plans to test its fleet(车队)of self-driving cars on public roads this summer, its business model remains a bit of a mystery. By 2025, as many as 250,000 self-driving vehicles could be sold each year globally, according to a study by an industry research firm.
"Vehicles that can take anyone from A to B at the push of a button could transform mobility for millions of people," said Chris Urmson, director of Google's self-driving car project. For now, Google has no plans to sell any of its self-driving cars. They are strictly for research. But they will hit public roads this summer near Google's headquarters in Mountain View, California. Previous testing has taken place only on closed courses.
The cars are built to operate without a steering wheel, accelerator(油门)or brake pedal. "Our software and sensors do all the work," Urmson said. "The vehicles
will be very basic—we want to learn from them and adapt them as quickly as possible—but they will take you where you want to go at the push of a button." The prototype(雏形)are the first of a 100-car fleet the tech giant is building.
In the long run, Urmson sees a future of safer roads—the majority of auto accidents are caused by human error—and fewer traffic jams. Robotic cars could also shuttle people who can't drive because of age or illness.
Google has said that self-driving cars could launch new business models in which people buy the use of vehicles they don't own. The company has already tested other types of self-driving cars on public streets, including modified Lexus sport-utility vehicles, under a special permit program by the California Department of Motor Vehicles that requires a human driver at the controls.
The state has issued six other companies permits to operate such cars, including Delphi, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Tesla, Bosch and Nissan. The vehicles that will be tested on open roads this summer will have removable steering wheels, accelerators and brake pedals to allow "safety drivers" to take control if needed.
Google says the cars are safe. The vehicles have sensors that "can detect objects out to a distance of more than two football fields in all directions, which is especially helpful on busy streets with lots of intersections," Urmson said. "We're looking forward to learning how the community understands and interacts with the vehicles, and to uncovering challenges that are unique to a fully self-driving vehicle," Urmson said.
63. The passage informs us that self-driving cars __________.
A. will probably decrease traffic jams
B. have already passed necessary tests
C. have been purchased by some companies
D. will be able to communicate with drivers
64. According to Chris Urmson, ______________.
A. software and sensors are vital for self-driving cars
B. self-driving cars can give driving orders to humans
C. self-driving cars are specially designed for the elderly
D. ordinary vehicles will be replaced by self-driving cars
65. The underlined word "intersections" in the last paragraph probably means ______________.
A. accidents B. buildings C. crossings D. vehicles
66. What is the best title for this passage?
A. Self-driving Car Avoids Human Errors
B. Self-driving Car Meets New Challenges
C. Google's Self-driving Car Enjoys Global Popularity
D. Google's Self-driving Car Graduates to City Streets

It's rare that you see the words "shyness" and "leader" in the same sentence. After all, the common viewpoint is that those outgoing and sociable guys make great public speakers and excellent networkers and that those shy people are not. A survey conducted by USA Today referred to 65 percent of executives who believed shyness to be a barrier to leadership. Interestingly, the same article stresses that roughly 40 percent of leaders actually are quite shy—they're just better at adapting themselves to situational demands. Bill Gates, Warren Buffet and Charles Schwab are just a few "innies".
Unlike their outgoing counterparts who are more sensitive to rewards and risk-taking, shy people take a cautious approach to chance. Rather than the flashy chit-chat that defines social gathering, shy people listen attentively to what others say and absorb it before they speak. They're not thinking about what to say while the other person is still talking, but rather listening so they can learn what to say. Along the same lines, shy people share a common love of learning. They are intrinsically(内在地) motivated and therefore seek content regardless of achieving an outside standard.
Being shy can also bring other benefits. Remember being in school and hearing the same kids contribute, until shy little Johnny, who almost never said a word, cut in? Then what happened? Everyone turned around to look with great respect at little Johnny actually talking. This is how shy people made good use of their power of presence:they "own" the moment by speaking calmly and purposefully, which translate to a positive image.
Shyness is often related to modesty. Not to say that limelight-seekers aren't modest, but shy people tend to have an accurate sense of their abilities and achievements. As a result, they are able to acknowledge mistakes, imperfections, knowledge gaps and limitations.
Since shy people have a lower sensitivity to outside rewards than outgoing ones, they're more comfortable working with little information and sticking to their
inner desires. Shy people are also more likely to insist on finding solutions that aren't primarily apparent. Don't believe me? Maybe you'll believe Albert Einstein, who once said, "It's not that I'm so smart, it's that I stay with problems longer." Obviously, finding certainty where uncertainty is typically popular is a huge plus for any successful person.
The myth that shy people are less effective leaders than their outgoing fellows is just a misunderstanding. Make wise use of your personality strengths to lead your business no matter what side of the range you fall on.
67. We can learn from Paragraph 2 that ___________.
A. shy people are sensitive to rewards
B. shy people care more about content
C. outgoing people are more careful about chances
D. outgoing people consider what to learn while listening
68. The example of Johnny shows ____________.
A. shy people are likely to be modest
B. hardworking students speak little in public
C. some students keep silent on purpose at school
D. shy people may have an advantage in discussion
69. We can learn from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 5 that ____________.
A. success results from devotion
B. shyness contributes to popularity

Skin-to-skin Effort Aims to Cut Newborn Deaths
A social media campaign has been launched in China to cut down the number of newborns babies who die in the first 24 hours of life. The campaign, called First Embrace(拥抱),promotes skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby immediately after birth, a practice proven to keep the baby warm and help it to fight infections.
There are 16 million babies born in China each year, and approximately 150,000 of them die before they reach one month of age. 71 Zhang Shuyi, a researcher at the Capital Institute of Pediatrics in Beijing, said there was strong evidence for the First Embrace approach.
“When babies are cold, they are more likely to catch infections or have difficulty breathing,” she said,” 72 It provides direct protection against infection, promotes bonding between the parent and child and supports breast-feeding.” Health workers who shifted from the normal practice of separation to skin-to-skin contact have observed that babies are more pink, calm and comfortable.
The WHO has developed the First Embrace approach to help reduce newborn deaths across the Western Pacific region, including China. Bernhard Schwartlander , the WHO Representative in China, said, “As many as two-thirds of newborn deaths could be prevented using simple, low-cost methods, including the First Embrace.”
73 The WHO will be posting information about the campaign, and hosting online question-and-answer sessions with Chinese and international experts. The public can participate by following the WHO on Weibo and joining the conversation. Schwartlander said, “We are targeting new parents, pregnant women and couples thinking about having a baby. 74 ”
Just last month, a new research shows that child and mother health outcomes in Shanghai are equal to those in the USA and Canada. 75 Hopefully, the messages conveyed by the new campaign could help to bridge that gap.
A. The campaign has now been launched via Weibo.
B. Of that number, half die in the first 24 hours of life.
C. Skin-to-skin contact keeps a baby warm by transferring heat.
D. Those parents who lost their newborn babies can get supports on the platform.
E. In other parts of China, however, the statistics are like those of poor countries.
F. It indicates that related methods for health care and birth quality should be improved.
G. We also aim to involve health professionals in the importance of early essential newborn care.
【考点】新闻报道
【试题解析】为了减少新生儿的死亡,中国社交媒体发起一项运动倡导母亲在孩子出生后,增加与孩子的亲密接触。
1.考查上下文的理解判断能力。B选项中的of that number 与上一句中的approximately 150,000 of them die保持一致。
The public can participate by following the WHO on Weibo的Weibo。

M: Lily, there’s a party tonight. Who else can we invite?
W: Well, we could ask Gary and Amy.
M: But Amy is not available. She’s busy with her project.
Text 2
M: Linda, are you ready to go shopping?
W: Just a minute. I need to make a list of the things that we need.
M: Good idea. Have you written down potatoes, carrots, and onions?
W: Oh, I forgot onions. I’ll add it.
Text 3
W: Mike, where will we meet for tonight’s concert?
M: I’ll see you at the café near the bus stop.

M: OK.
Text 4
M: Lucy, could you please turn down the music? I’ve got to go to bed early. I will catch the first flight to Detroit tomorrow morning.
W: Oh, sorry, I got it. By the way, why not set an alarm?
M: Good idea!
Text 5
W: Could you spare me a few minutes?
M: Well, what can I do for you?
W: I wonder if I could hand in my essay next Monday, because I have a bad headache.
M: No problem. Have a good rest.
Text 6
W: You have some lovely paintings for sale. Can you tell me who painted the one in your shop
window? It’s amazing.

the magazine.

M: Why did you learn to ride a bike?
W: I thought it would be fun. But now I know it isn’t.

Hello, this is the tennis club reception area. Since you’ve registered your name as a club member before, you don’t have to register when you arrive. You can bring 3
guests at one time. And you must be able to present your membership card if a club official asks to see it. Well, here are the changing rooms with showers and lockers for your clothes and things. Obviously, you don't have to leave your clothes in the lockers. Yet we strongly advise you to. It’s much safer. First, you should pay 20 pence for the locker. But you get the coin back when you take your things out. And the tennis courts are round here to the left. You can book the courts for thirty minutes or an hour. However, you can carry on playing until the next players arrive. We have a club bar which serves food and drink behind the reception. The club bar is open from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00p.m. But all players must leave the courts by 10:00 p.m. We hope you have a good time here.

W: Hello, this is Land Transport Information at Toronto Airport. How may I help you?
M: Oh, good morning. I’m flying to Toronto Airport next Friday, and I need to get to York University. Could you tell me how I can get there?
W: York University. Let me see. That’s about 30 miles southeast from here. You’d better take the Airport Shuttle. It will take you from the airport right to your hotel or private address.
M: That sounds great.
W: But you do need to reserve a seat.
M: OK. Can I make a booking right now?
W: Sure. I’ll have to fill out this form for you. So what date do you want to book this for?
M: The 16th of August.
W: And when will you arrive at Toronto Airport?
M: I think it’s 11:30am.
W: Then if I book your shuttle for 12:30, that will give you plenty of time to, you know, collect your luggage, maybe grab a coffee.
M: Yes, that’s fine.
W: And what’s your name please?
M: James Thomson. J-A-M-E-S.
W: OK. What flight will you be travelling on?
M: It’s Air Canada flight number AC936, from London Heathrow.
W: So, that’s $45 to pay please. Have you got your credit card number there?
M: Yes. It’s a VISA card. The card number is 3303 8450.
W: Well. That seems to be everything. Have a nice trip.
M: Thanks for your help.
