Before she appeared on the reality show(真人秀) Britain’s Got Talent, Susan Boyle was just an ordinary middle-aged British woman. Now all this is going to change.
She lives in a house with her cat Pebbles in a tiny Scottish town. Because of learning difficulties, she doesn’t have much education. But what she does have is a very good voice. As a kid, she sang in church and choirs and school plays. For a living, she sang at local pubs.
When she took the stage on April 10th her hair was untidy and her clothes seemed just one step up from rags. The audience laughed at her.
But then she opened her mouth. A few bars into the song and the laughing audience went silent. A beautiful voice was singing I Dreamed a Dream from the musical Les
Miserables. Everyone was amazed. At the end of her song, the audience jumped to their feet and applauded wildly.
Almost overnight, Susan became a household name. She won fans and millions of admirers. Her online videos have drawn over 85.2 million hits.
Susan’s story proved the truth of an old saying: “Never judge the book by its cover.” Susan may look ordinary, and doesn’t have much dress sense, but she can certainly sing.
Susan’s fans admire her courage, as much as they do her voice. She has experienced mockery and many disappointments, but her love for music has kept her going, which is worth anyone’s respect.

A new study of 8,000 young people in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior shows that although love can make adults live healthily and happily, it is a bad thing for young people.Puppy love(早恋)may bring stress for young people and can lead to depression. The study shows that girls become more depressed than boys, and younger girls are the worst of all.
The possible reason for the connection between love and higher risk of depression for girls is “loss of self”.According to the study, even though boys would say “lose themselves in a romantic relationship”,this “loss of self” is much more likely to lead to depression when it happens to girls. Young girls who have romantic relationships usually like hiding their feelings and opinions. They won’t tell that to their parents.
Dr Marianm Kaufman,an expert on young people problems, says 15% to 20% young people will have depression during their growing. Trying romance often causes the depression. She advises kids not to jump into romance too early. During growing up,it is important for young people to build strong friendships and a strong sense of self. She also suggests the parents should encourage their kids to keep close to their friends, attend more interesting school activities and spend enough time with family.
Parents should watch for signs of depression—eating or mood changes—and if they see signs from their daughters or sons, they need to give help. The good news is that the connection between romance and depression seems to become weak with age.Love will always make us feel young, but only maturity gives us a chance to avoid its bad side effects.
28. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. Romance is a two-edged sword for adults.
B. Parents should forbid their children’s love.
C. Puppy love may bring young people depression.
D. Romance is good for young people.
29. Which of the following is more likely to have depression?
A. Careless parents whose children are deep in love.
B. Young people who have a strong sense of selfishness.
C. Young boys whose parents watch for their behavior.
D. Young girls who always hide their feelings and opinions.
30. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Lacking love can lead young people to grow up more quickly.
B. The older a woman is, the less likely she seems to lose herself in romance.
C. Early love makes young people keep close to their friends and parents.
D. Parents should help their children to be aware of the signs of depression.
31. What’s the author’s attitude towards puppy love?
A. disapproving B. confused C. neutral D. scared
D
Who is smarter? A human being or artificial intelligence ?
The question swept the world last week when a Google-developed program called AlphaGo defeated the world top player, South Korean Lee Se-del, 4-1.
So, what comes next?
Some people have been arguing that artificial intelligence, or AI in short, will be a bad thing for humans. In an interview with the BBC in 2014, UK scientist Stephen Hawking warned that “the development of full artificial intelligence could mean the end of the human race.”
So are we really about to live in the world shown in the Terminator movies?
“Not quite,” answered The Economist. After all, it’s not hard to get a computer program to remember and produce facts. What is hard is getting computers to use their knowledge in everyday situations.
“We think that, for the human being, things like sight and balance(视觉平衡), are natural and ordinary in our life.” Thomas Edison, founder of Motion Figures, a company that is bringing AI to boys, told the newspaper. “But for a robot, to walk up and down just like human beings requires various decisions to be made every second, and it’s really difficult to do.”
As The Economist put it, “We have a long way to go before AI can truly begin to be similar to the human brain, even though the technology can be great.”
Meanwhile, John Markoff of The New York Times said that researchers should build artificial intelligence to make people more effective.
“Our fate is in our own hands,” he wrote. “Since technology depends on the values of its creators, we can make human choices that use technology to improve the world.”
32.What was the result of the match?
A.Lee Se-del won AlphaGo 4-1. B.Neither side won the match.
C.Google program beat AlphaGo. D.Lee Se-del was defeated.
33.What does Thomas Edison possibly mean in his remarks?
A.AI can make various decisions quickly.
B.AI would take the place of human beings.
C.It’s very hard for AI to beat the human brain.
D.AI does better than humans in sight and balance.
34.Who believes much has to be done to improve AI?
A.The Economist. B.John Markoff.
C.The New York Times. D.Stephen Hawking.
35.What does the underlined part in the last paragraph imply?
A.AI will improve the world completely.
B.AI may bring disasters to human beings.
C.AI is in the control of human beings.
D.AI will make our future out of control.

Did you know that if you need an alarm clock to wake up in the morning, you’re probably sleep-deprived (缺失)? ____36_______ . On average, American teens get two hours less than the average 9.2 hours of sleep they need each night to function at their best.
There are many reasons why teens don’t get enough sleep. ____37_______ . When your parents were young, they might have read a book or watched television before trying to go to sleep. But today’s teens are likely to be surfing the Internet, texting, emailing, or playing video games right before bed. ____38_______ . And using them right before bed can result in difficulty getting to sleep. According to a survey by the National Sleep Foundation, teens with four or more electronic equipment in their rooms are much more likely than their peers to get an insufficient (不足的) amount of sleep at night, and are almost twice as likely to fall asleep in school and while doing homework.
____39_______ . In the National Sleep Foundation survey, three-quarters of the teens took at least one drink with caffeine (咖啡因) every day, and nearly one-third consumed two or more every day. With all the trendy “high-energy” drinks and coffees out there right now, it’s easy to get a caffeine overload and that’s not good for sleep.
So what can you do if you’re in lack of sleep? “The good news is that you only have to make up about a third of what you have lost, to function and feel better,” says Dr. Mahowald at a sleep disorders center. ____40_______ . But sleeping until noon on the weekend can cause problems --- you’ll likely be wide-eyed until late those nights. Instead, try keeping a reasonable, regular sleeping and waking schedule.
A. One of them is a relatively new development.
B.Those extra two hours of sleep on Saturday and Sunday mornings can really help.
C.Most teens don’t get enough sleep.
D.Many teens also drink too much caffeine to sleep well.
E.Electronic devices are more exciting than simply watching television.

One Possible Version:
April 15, Sunday Fine
Today I visited the zoo with several classmates. Early in the morning, we got together at 7 am. outside our school gate. Then we went to the zoo on foot. It was half an hour’s walk. When we got there, the zoo was already full of people. There are many animals in the zoo, which were very interesting, but we were especially interested in monkeys. They made all kinds of faces and we also talked with some foreign guests in English. Laughing and chatting, we really had a good time. However, some people behaved very badly there. For example, they dropped litter everywhere, as well as spit freely in public, which made me depressed. I think it is everyone’s responsibility to behave themselves, since it’s well known that China is an ancient civilized country with a long history. I do hope changes will happen in the future.
I really had an unforgettable time today.
