In recent years, I was worried about my 10-year-old daughter. She didn’t like to communicate with others. She always kept quiet and hid herself in her own world. Many times I wanted to talk with her about this problem, but she often kept a blind eye on it. However, one day she said to me, “ Mom, I made a new friend at school today. Can she come over tomorrow?” Donna was a shy girl and I wanted her to make some friends to bring her out of herself.
“ Sure, honey, that sounds great. ” I said, thinking back to my own best friend , Lillian. We lived across the street from each other in Washington Heights, New York. We met at the age of 10, too. Like my daughter, I was shy, but Lillian helped me out. She was one of the friendliest people in school, with shiny black hair and kind smile.
In senior high school, Lillian went on a trip to Florida. This was the first time we had to be away from each other for a few days. “ I’ll be back soon,” she told me. But three days later, Lillian’s sister told me that she had fallen into a river and hadn’t come out any more. Soon, my family moved to New Jersey. Whenever I thought of her, tears came into my eyes.
The next day Donna brought her new friend home. “ Hi, Mrs Loggia,” the little girl said. Her hair was so shiny and black and she shot me a big smile. “ My name is Laura.”
My daughter’s new friend was so much like Lillian. I was still puzzled when Laura’s mom came to pick her up later that afternoon. I opened the door to let her in. “ Judy!” she cried. “It’s me, Lillian’s sister, from Washington Heights.” Yes, my daughter’s friend looked familiar. She was Lillian’s niece(外甥女).

Most schools are going to start a program called B.Y.O.T.(bring your own technology) This program allows students to bring iPads, cell phones or other things to school for study. One aim for this program is that the students don’t need to carry textbooks any more. They can download math, science, social studies, and read textbooks on their iPads. Another one is that they can get free educational subjects to play in their free time!
Schools have set up a free Wi-Fi system just for the B.Y.O.T. program. Thank teachers for all their hard work to set this program up. I really think this program will go well in most schools and I also think the learning will be better than ever.
However, some schools will probably not allow this because they think that it will make kids mess around too much and they might break their iPads.
This program will let students have fun and learn at the same time. If you like your iPads and you like to read, school is getting started with reading with iPads. High schools and middle schools have already started and so have some elementary(小学的)schools. But most elementary schools are coming along! Let’s tell them: Hurry! Get ready to learn!
49. In the program B.Y.O.T. , students usually go to school without______.
A. taking iPads B. taking textbooks
C. learning math D. learning Science
50. What is the program B.Y.O.T. used for?

52. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. Few schools have started the program.
15
B. You can’t learn while you have fun.
C. Elementary schools do worst in the program.
D. The passage tells us not to learn with iPads.

Whether you’re a host or a guest, there are many social situations that will call for interaction(互动). How can you find good ways to communicate with others, and become a lot more comfortable around people in a conversational setting? Here are some suggestions to help.
Begin by introducing yourself.
Be aware of your internal monologue(长篇大论). When you suddenly feel that you’re not able to make a conversation with another person, it’s likely that you’re worrying that you’re boring, not good enough, too unimportant, wasting their time, etc. Try to keep in mind that everyone has these self-doubts from time to time, but that it’s necessary to overcome them in order to communicate well with others.
Understand the secret of a good conversation. The secret at the heart of a good conversation is to listen and do very little of the talking, apart from encouraging the other person to open up.
Know how to ask an open question. An open question is a question that needs an explanation for an answer, and not just a simple “Yes” or “No”. Open questions tend to begin with: Who? When? What… Closed questions (Are you? Do you? Have you?) only bring you back to the point of not knowing how to get the conversation going.
Put the location comment together with the open question and your conversation will be underway. For example, “That’s a nice handbag. Where did you get it?” This lets the handbag owner talk about the day that they went shopping and all this funny stuff happened.
Know the stuff of a small talk. Be aware of good topics for the conversation. When you first meet people, it’s important to keep the conversation light and simple.
Use words of a sensory nature. You can use such words as “see” ,“ imagine”, “ feel”, “tell”, “sense”, etc., in order to encourage the other person to keep painting a picture as part of their conversation.
Synchronize(同步). Once your partner–in-conversation has started talking, follow his or her cue(提示) to keep the conversation going smoothly. Give encouraging feedback(反馈). You don’t even have to say things a lot of the time—nod, say ah-ha or wow or oh or hmm, and short encouraging statements such as “ Is that so” and “ Goodness!”, and “ That’s amazing!”, etc.
53. How many suggestions are mentioned in the passage?
A. Five. B. Six. C. Seven. D. Eight.
54.Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. When meeting strangers, it’s not good to choose some complicated topics.
B. The secret of a good conversation is to listen less and talk more as well as giving others a chance to speak.
C. If you add some location comment and ask an open question, a funny and good talk is likely to continue.
D. It’s important to give some encouraging feedback when talking with others.
15
55. The writer writes this passage in order to_____________.
A. tell us when to ask an open question or a closed question when talking
B. teach us how to catch people’s attention when communicating with them
C. tell us how to make a conversation when meeting people for the first time
D. give us some suggestions on making a good conversational setting when talking

Good morning, I’m Chen Hua. Here’s my culture report for today, Monday.
I will introduce a new film to you. The film is Pirates of the Caribbean. Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom are the stars. They are both very popular and famous, and they both act well in this film, and make their characters believable.
The film is an action movie. The story is about an old ship. It sails around the Caribbean islands. Depp and Bloom try to find some lost gold. Then they come face to face with some terrible men, and have to fight them. They also save Keira Knightley, the daughter of a

rich man.
The film isn’t true to life. Although there’s too much fighting. But except for that, I think it’s exciting. If you didn’t see it when it first came out, I advise you to go and see it now. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. It’s showing at the Dream Cinema at nine o’clock all week.
