For those who just love to shop online, Nov. 11, China's Singles' Day, may be the best time of the year, because it will see some seemingly irrational discounts, in line with the practice that was started in 2010.
In 2012, Taobao, a major online shopping website, set a record of 1 billion yuan in sales on that day alone, with a huge 19.1 billion yuan exchanging hands on the website. The number of items sold made the delivery(交货) services break down due to overloading. It's worth thinking about tricks and tips to make the most of the shopping carnival(盛况).
Select goods early and rationally
Put everything you want in the “shopping cart” to make a list of potential(潜在的,可能的)
purchases. Then go through it carefully, removing anything you selected on impulse(冲动).
Seal(确定) a deal in advance
Talk to service staff (工作人员)as early as possible. They may have already decided on a discount policy for Nov. 11 and may even ship the product to you in advance, which is a good way to avoid the heavy online traffic on the special day.
Manage your budget
Popular items will be in strong demand, so make sure you're ready to pay with the least number of procedures(手续). It's best to deposit(存放) a reasonable amount of money in your Alipay account(账户) so that you can pay without going through any lengthy verifications(认证). If you're planning on using a credit card, you can call the bank to apply for more credit, but only spend as much as you can afford to repay.
Look at the real items
With many products, such as shoes and clothes, it's better to look at them first to check their quality, size and appearance and ensure you're buying the right one.
Be smart
It's all about timing. According to Alipay, there are several peak hours when online traffic is heavy and there is a higher risk of transaction(交易) failures. Try to avoid the following time periods: 12 p.m.~1:30 a.m., 10~11 a.m., 3~5 p.m., and 8~10 p.m.
Apps (应用程序)as a helping hand
Smartphone apps like Huihui Shopping list the best offers on a particular website, while Yitao, a software developed by Alibaba, compares prices of selected items across different websites to bring you the best deal.
Track(跟踪) and open your package
Because of the huge demand, delivery mistakes are hard to avoid, so try to track the package. If the product is easy to go bad, keep the tracking record in case of an argument. When the package arrives, check the item carefully before signing for it.
56. What does the underlined word “irrational” mean?
A. Amazing. B. Unexpected. C. Unreasonable. D. Irregular.
57. According to the passage, we can infer ________.
A. Taobao is a major online shopping website in China
B. you are less likely to make a deal during peak hours
C. Taobao broke down due to large purchases on Nov. 11 in 2012
D. you have to wait until Nov. 11 if you want to buy something very cheap
58. What's the writer's purpose of writing the passage?
A. To encourage customers to shop on Taobao.
B. To attract more potential customers to shop online.
C. To offer suggestions on how to shop online on Nov. 11.
D. To introduce the popularity of shopping online on Nov. 11.
59. With some money in Alipay account, you can ________.
A. spend as much as you can afford
B. pay with the most number of procedures
C. save much trouble and time when you pay
D. get the best deal with the unreasonable discounts
B
Here's a movie --- a lot of fun that's sure to entertain the whole family.
With some great compute-made effects, a great cast(演员阵容) and a fun-packed storyline(故事情节), Robots is the best animated film since The Incredibles. Yep, it really is that good.
Set in a world populated by robots, Ewan McGregor plays (扮演) Rodney Copperbottom, a young robot who leaves his small-town home to pursue his dream of becoming an inventor.
But after arriving in Robot City, his hopes of getting a job at Bigweld Industries are destroyed when he learns the firm has been taken over by the bad Ratchet (Greg Kinnear).
Egged on by(被…怂恿,煽动) his controlling mum, Madame Gasket (Jim Broadbent), Ratchet plans to reduce half of Robot City's citizens to scrap metal(金属碎片) by refusing to sell the spare parts they need to survive.
Instead, he wants to make a fortune selling expensive upgrades that few can afford. As he says, “Why be you when you can be new?”
Helped by a few robots known as the Rustles ---including Robin Williams as the cowardly Fender (“I'm made of a metal called Afraidium”) --- Rodney must track down the company's founder, Bigweld (Mel Brooks), and convince him to save the city from Ratchet's plans.
The first thing that'll attract you about the movie is the thought that's gone into creating Robot City. It's a wondrous world full of mechanical(机械的) marvels including wind-up cars and walking streetlamps.
Also terrific are the special effects. This might be an animated movie but at times you'll catch yourself thinking it's really a live-action film.
Of course, there have been plenty of animated movies that were disappointing because of a weak storyline (see Shark Tale, for example).
But Robots appeals to you right from the start thanks to a heart-warming and thoroughly attractive plot that never bores.
My only complaints are with Williams who, as usual, has a one-in-10 success rate with his jokes. Also a disapointment is a romantic subplot between Rodney and a shapely robot called Cappy (Halle Berry) that doesn't go anywhere.
Complains aside, this is a mechanical marvel that'll have you bolted firmly to your seat.
BEST QUOTE(引述): Fender:“Even though you had a discouraging day, just remember there's another one coming tomorrow.”
BEST BIT: Check out those amazing images.
WORST BIT: Robin Williams' character does an unfunny Britney Spears dance routine.
IF YOU LIKED... Ice Age, The Incredibles, Toy Story... YOU'LL LIKE THIS.
60. This piece of writing is a ________.
A. commercial advertisement B. film review C. movie poster D. literary essay
61. The cast of Robots is made up of all the following actors or actresses EXCEPT ________.
A. Ewan McGregor B. Robin Williams C. Britney Spears D. Halle Berry
62. What is Shark Tale an example of?
A. A great cast. B. A poor plot(情节). C. Special effects. D. Ugly animation.

If you finally compromised(妥协) and gave your kid an iPhone or iPad this Christmas, you may by now be wondering if they will ever return to the real world away from that shiny new screen. A British smart mom has published a document that may secure you a full-on teenage eye roll, but it could also help young ones learn to be responsible. Amusingly it's not just a few core principles, but a 13-point contract(契约) for her 16-year-old son David to obey as the lucky recipient(接受者) of an iPhone.
Check this out---
Dear David,
Merry Christmas! You are now the proud owner of an iPhone. But with the acceptance of this present come rules and regulations. Please read through the following contract. Failure to observe the following list will result in the end of your iPhone ownership.
1. It is my phone. I bought it. I pay for it. I am lending it to you. Aren't I the greatest?
2. I will always know the password(密码).
3. If it rings, answer it. It is a phone. Say hello, use your manners. Do not ever ignore a phone call if the screen reads “Mom” or “Dad”. Not ever.
4. It does not go to school with you. But half days, field trips and after school activities will require special consideration.
5. If it falls into the toilet, breaks on the ground, or vanishes_into_thin_air,_you are responsible for the replacement(更换) costs or repairs.
6. Do not use this technology to lie, fool, or cheat. Do not make yourself take part in conversations that are hurtful to others.
7. Do not text, e-mail, or say anything through this device you would not say in person.
8. Surf the Internet for information you would openly share with me. If you have a question about anything, ask a person---preferably(更可取地) me or your father.
9. Turn it off, silence it, put it away in public, especially in a restaurant, at the movies, or
while speaking with another human being. You are not a rude person; do not allow the iPhone to change that.
10. Download music that is new or classic. Your generation has access to music like never before in history. Take advantage of that gift. Expand your horizons.
11. Don't take too many pictures and videos. There is no need to record everything. Live your experiences. They will be stored in your memory for ever.
12. Leave your phone home sometimes and feel safe and secure in that decision. It is not alive or an extension(扩充) of you. Learn to live without it.
13. Keep your eyes up. See the world happening around you. Stare out a window. Listen to the birds. Take a walk. Talk to a stranger. Wonder without Googling.
It is my hope that you can agree to these terms. Most of the lessons listed here do not just apply to the iPhone, but to life as well. Trust your powerful mind and giant heart above any machine. I love you. I hope you enjoy your awesome new iPhone.
Love
Mom

Jane arrives at Thornfield, having been met at the George Inn. Mrs. Fairfax confuses her a little at first, because she is so informal and welcoming. But in due course(没过多久) Jane discovers that Mrs. Fairfax is the housekeeper(女管家).
Jane’s pupil, Adele Varens, is the eight-year-old French child under the legal protection of Mr. Edward Rochester, the owner of the house. We learn later that her mother had claimed (声称)she was his daughter. Mr. Rochester is not convinced by this claim, but felt he could not leave the little girl poor when her mother died.
Adele is a pleasant little girl, even if she is not a particularly eager student. Life goes on very peacefully for three months, until the return of Mr. Rochester. Jane first meets him on his horse, and her description of him is quite fanciful. He takes a fall and Jane helps him, although she does not know who he is until they are both back at Thornfield.
It is obvious to the reader, although not to Jane, that the reason why Mr. Rochester stays at Thornfield much longer than usual is that he finds her company (陪伴) enjoyable. Jane, unknowingly at first, falls in love with him. Their closeness is very clear. There is something about Thornfield that is mysterious. Jane is encouraged to focus her attention on the servant Grace Poole, who is Mr. Rochester’s mad wife Bertha Mason’s keeper (看守人) at Thornfield, and whose drunken carelessness frequently allows Bertha to escape and do something violent.
When Mr. Rochester’s bed is set on fire, Jane rescues him, but does not understand why the matter is not pursued(追究), despite Mr. Rochester assuring(向…保证) her that the criminal(罪犯) is Grace. The next morning Grace behaves as though she has done nothing wrong.
Eventually, Mr. Rochester leaves, to go to a house party. He brings everyone at the party back with him, changing the atmosphere in the house, and delighting Adele. One of the guests is Blanche Ingram. However, it is clear from the way she is described in the book that she is too proud; our sympathies(赞同,支持) are not with her.
Mr. Rochester is called away from the house, and when he returns he chooses to play the role
of a fortune teller(算命者). It is clear to the reader that one of his goals is to try to turn Blanche against the idea of marriage to him. While he has clearly made her angry, he is unsuccessful.
One afternoon, Jane hears that her cousin John Reed is dead and Mrs. Reed, who is probably on her deathbed, has been asking for her. With strict instructions from Mr. Rochester to return quickly, she sets off to Gateshead. On arrival, she realises she no longer hates her cousins. However, Mrs. Reed is still bitter towards her, due to the fact that Jane’s mother was Mr Reed’s favourite sister and this resulted in him clearly favouring(偏爱) Jane over his own children.
A short time later, Mrs. Reed gives Jane a letter from her uncle, John Eyre, that was written three years earlier. It explains how he planned to adopt(领养) Jane and allow her to inherit his fortune(继承他的财产). Mrs. Reed never handed the letter over because of her bitterness. Jane tries once more to seek reconciliation (和解), but without success; her aunt dies that night.
67. Who does the underlined word “she” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A. Jane. B. Mrs. Fairfax. C. Adele Varens. D. Grace Poole.
68. The story of Adele Varens mainly shows that ______.
A. women have a low social status(地位) B. Mr. Rochester is sympathetic(有同情心的)
C. Mr. Rochester is irresponsible D. girls are often abandoned(被抛弃) by their parents
69. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. Mr. Rochester expects that Blanche will marry him.
B. Mr. Rochester plays the role of a fortune teller to attract Jane.
C. Jane and Mr. Rochester enjoy each other’s company in Thornfield.
D. Grace Poole often gets drunk and does something violent.
70. Why is Mrs. Reed bitter towards Jane?
A. Because Jane inherited Mr. Reed’s fortune.
B. Because Jane doesn’t get along well with her cousins.
C. Because Jane’s mother was more beautiful than Mrs. Reed.
D. Because Mr. Reed loved Jane more than his own children.
第四部分:任务型阅读(1×10)
When you catch a cold, should you still go into work or have a rest at home? Sometimes this decision can actually get quite stressful. On the one hand, going into work is the conscientious (尽责的) thing to do. On the other hand, going into work could make you ill for longer. You probably won’t be able to concentrate and do your work well and you might make other people ill. So to help you decide, let’s take a look at some of the factors.
First of all, before you go into work, ask yourself whether you are actually going to be productive. Do you have pressing work that really can’t wait? Is your job so easy that you can relax while working? If going into work might make you worse, perhaps you had better have one day off and then work probably later.
Secondly, ask yourself whether you are contagious (患传染病的) and your suffering is caused by a virus. Viruses are highly contagious and can spread through the air. If you cough close to someone, you can very easily give him or her a cold. As a result, you’ll end up infecting your colleagues, thus dramatically damaging the productivity of the whole workforce.
Another reason to take time off work is that it’s important for your health. Even if you can work in your current condition, that doesn’t necessarily mean that you should, as paying no attention to your symptoms could lead to you getting worse and catching other illnesses. Your immune system is weakened when you are ill, so if you travel on the bus with other possibly sick people, you can end up getting other serious infections. Worse still, if a viral infection makes it to your brain, it can result in serious brain damage. So listen to your body and take its warnings seriously!
Though it’s better to take time off work in the vast majority of situations, you’re most likely not to do it. Why? Because there is an important meeting tomorrow, or you’re trying to impress the new boss, or you have a huge to-do list. In short, you’re probably always feeling as though you have a huge mountain of work to do. However, in fact it was probably this pressure that caused you to get ill in the first place. So think it over: Can you really not take a single day off work for the sake of your health? If not, then there’s probably something very wrong with your work-life balance.
Whether you should go into work when you’re ill

One possible version:
Once in an English lesson, we had a heated discussion about the relationship between economic development and environment protection. 60 percent of the classmates believe we should never sacrifice environment for economy. They think the present environmental problems are largely caused by rapid economic development. For example, farmable land is decreasing rapidly just because of the industrial development and the development of cities.
However, 40 percent of the students think it unnecessary to consider environmental problems now because economic development comes first. They believe that environmental problems are only the by-products of economic development, which are unavoidable. They can be dealt with later when we have the time and money.
In my opinion, the second view is completely wrong. The purpose of economic development is to provide a comfortable and happy life for our people. We should aim at keeping the balanced development between economy and environment..
