No one can change the weather. Nobody can control the weather. But if we read correctly the signs around us, we can tell what the more important changes in the weather will be. This way of telling what the weather will be like on the following day or two is called weather forecasting.
For many centuries and in all countries, people have studied the weather and tried to make weather forecasting. Rings around the sun are a sign of coming rain. That many people feel their joints(关节) hurt is a sign of wet weather. Some birds fly high if the weather is fine, but they fly near the ground if rainy or stormy weather is on the way. If you see a rainbow during rainy weather, this is a sign that the weather will become clear and fine. Such rainbows come in the evening. If the stars twinkle clearly at night, then fine weather will continue. If a fog appears in the morning just above a river, then the day will be warm. If the sunset is mostly red in color, then the following day will be fine. If a rainbow appears in the morning, rainy weather will probably come.
Most of the above sayings have been made by the people who have used their eyes and brains to make weather forecasting.
21. Which is true about weather forecasting?

Most painters discover a style of painting that is fit for them and stick to that, especially if
people admire their pictures. But Picasso, the great Spanish painter, was like a man who had not yet found his own particular style of painting. He kept on struggling to find the perfect expression till his death in 1973.
Some of Picasso's painting are rich, soft colored and beautiful. Others are ugly and cruel and strange. But such paintings allow us to imagine things for ourselves. They force us to say to ourselves,“What does he see that makes him paint like that?” And we begin to look under the surface of the things we see..
Picasso painted thousands of pictures in different styles. Sometimes he painted the natural look of things. Sometimes he seemed to break them apart and throw the pieces in our faces. He showed us what the mind knows as well as what the eyes see. At the age of 90,he remained as curious about the world as he had been when he was young. That is why people have called him “the youngest painter in the world.”
25. The ugly cruel and strange paintings by Picasso _______.
A. make us try to notice something latent(隐藏) in the things
B. allow us to ask questions about them
C. force us to question anything we see
D. cause us to think what Picasso saw was different from what we see
26. The sentence “Sometimes he seemed to break them apart and throw the pieces in our faces” means _____.
A. sometimes he tore his pictures into pieces
B. he broke something he was painting and threw them away
C. sometimes he showed some broken pictures to others
D. things in some of his pictures seem to be in disorder
27. Why have people called Picasso “the youngest painter in the world?”
A. Because he observed things with the eye and the mind.
B. Because he looked young when he was old.
C. Because he never stopped painting he was old.
D. Because he never gave up looking for something new.

You may not pay much attention to your daily elevator ride. Many of us use a lift several times during the day without really thinking about it. But Lee Gray, PhD, of the University of North Carolina, US, has made it his business to examine this overlooked form of public transport. He is known as the “Elevator Guy”.
“The lift becomes this interesting social space where etiquette (礼仪) is sort of odd (奇怪的),” Gray told the BBC. “They are socially very interesting but often very awkward places.”
We walk in and usually turn around to face the door. If someone else comes in, we may have to move. And here, according to Gray, lift-users unthinkingly go through a set pattern of movements. He told the BBC what he had observed.
He explained that when you are the only one inside a lift, you can do whatever you want – it’s your own little box.
If there are two of you, you go into different corners, standing diagonally (对角线地) across from each other to create distance.
When a third person enters, you will unconsciously form a triangle. And when there is a fourth person it becomes a square, with someone in every corner. A fifth person is probably going to have to stand in the middle.
New entrants to the lift will need to size up the situation when the doors slide open and then act decisively. Once in, for most people the rule is simple – look down, or look at your phone.
Why are we so awkward(尴尬的) in lifts?
“You don’t have enough space,” Professor Babette Renneberg, a clinical psychologist at the Free University of Berlin, told the BBC. “Usually when we meet other people we have about an arm’s length of distance between us. And that’s not possible in most elevators.”
In such a small, enclosed space it becomes very important to act in a way that cannot be construed (理解) as threatening or odd. “The easiest way to do this is to avoid eye contact,” she said.
28. The main purpose of the article is to _____.
A. remind us to enjoy ourselves in the elevator
B. tell us some unwritten rules of elevator etiquette
C. share an interesting but awkward elevator ride
D. analyze what makes people feel awkward in an elevator
29. According to Gray, when people enter an elevator, they usually ___
A. turn around and greet one another
B. look around or examine their phone
C. make eye contact with those in the elevator
D. try to keep a distance from other people
30. Which of the following describes how people usually stand when there are at more than two people in an elevator?
31. According to the article, people feel awkward in lifts because of _____.
A. someone’s odd behaviors B. the lack of space
C. their unfamiliarity with one another D. their eye contact with one another

My mom only had one eye. She ran a small shop at a flea market. She collected little weeds and such to sell… anything for the money we needed she was such an embarrassment. During my elementary school, she came to my school on a field day. I threw her a hateful look and ran out.
“Your mom only has one eye?!” they taunted me the next day.
I wished that my mom would just disappear from this world so I said to her, “Mom, why don’t you have the other eye?! You’re only going to make me a laughingstock. Why don’t you just die?” My mom did not respond.
Late that night, I woke up, and went to the kitchen to get a glass of water. I saw my mom crying there, so quietly, as if she was afraid that she might wake me. I took a look at her, and then turned away. There was something pinching at me in the corner of my heart. Even so, I hated my mother who was crying out of her one eye. So I told myself that I would grow up and become successful, because I hated my one-eyed mom and our desperate poverty.
Then I studied really hard. I left my mother and came to Seoul and got accepted in the Seoul University with all the confidence I had. Then, I got married, bought a house of my own, and then had kids, too. Now I’m living happily as a successful man. I like it here because it’s a place that
doesn’t remind me of my mom.
This happiness was getting bigger and bigger, when someone unexpected came to see me. It was my mother, still with her one eye. It felt as if the whole sky was falling apart on me. My little girl ran away, scared of my mom’s eye.
And I asked her, “Who are you? I don’t know you!!” as if I tried to make that real. I screamed at her “How dare you come to my house and scare my daughter! Get out of here now!!” My mother just quietly answered, “oh, I’m so sorry. I may have gotten the wrong address,” and she disappeared. Thank goodness, she didn’t recognize me. I was quite relieved. I told myself that I wasn’t going to care, or think about this for the rest of my life.
Then one day, a letter regarding a school reunion came to my house. After the reunion, I went down to the old shack, which I used to call a house just out of curiosity. There, I found my mother fallen on the cold ground. But I did not shed a single tear. In her hands was a letter to me:
My son, I think my life has been long enough now. And… I won’t visit Seoul anymore… but would it be too much to ask if I wanted you to come visit me once in a while? I miss you so much. And I was so glad when I heard you were coming for the reunion. But I decided not to go to the school…. For you… I’m sorry that I only have one eye, and I was an embarrassment for you. You see, when you were very little, you got into an accident, and lost your eye. As a mother, I couldn’t stand watching you having to grow up with only one eye… so I gave you mine… I was so proud of my son that was seeing a whole new world for me, in my place, with that eye. I was never upset at you for anything you did. The couple times that you were angry with me, I thought to myself, ‘it’s because he loves me.’ I miss the times when you were still young around me. I miss you so much. I love you. You mean the world to me.
My World Shattered. I hated the person who only lived for me. I cried for My Mother, I didn’t know of any way that will make up for my worst deeds.[来源:学科网ZXXK]

Challenges of life are of great importance in our growth. As the saying goes, “No cross, no crown.” Only by facing and overcoming difficulties in our life can we grow up happily and healthily.
It reminds me of my experience when I joined in the military training after I entered senior high school. It was the first time I had lived away from my home, so I found it difficult to fit in. And the training officer was strict with us. I once thought I couldn’t stick to the end. But anyway, I made it. The trials made it easier for me to adapt to life in high school, and the difficulties I came across have now become a precious memory in my life. In short, life consists of not only sunshine but also hardships. We should be brave in front of difficulties. Let’s learn to regard the challenges of life we are facing as a stepping-stone to future success and make the best of them!
