As you move around your home, take a good look at the things you have. It is likely that your living room will have a television set and a video, and your kitchen a washing machine and a microwave oven. Your bedroom drawers will be filled with almost three times as many clothes as you need. You almost certainly own a car and possibly a home computer, holiday abroad at least once a year and eat out at least once a week.
Now, perhaps, more than ever before, people are wondering what life is all about, and what it is for. Seeking material success is beginning to trouble large numbers of people around the world. They feel that the long hours work culture to make more money is eating up their lives, leaving them very little time or energy for family or pastimes. Many are turning to other ways of living and downshifting is one of them. Six percent of workers in Britain took the decision to downshift last year.
One couple who downshifted is Daniel and Liz. They used to work in central London. He was a newspaper reporter and she used to work for an international bank. They would go to work by train every day from their large house in the suburbs, leaving their two children with a nanny. Most evenings Daniel wouldn’t get home until eight or nine o’clock and nearly twice a month he would have to fly to New York for meetings. They both earned a large amount of money but began to feel that life was passing them by.
Nowadays, they run a farm in the mountains of Wales. “I always wanted to have a farm then,” says Daniel, “and we took almost a year to make the decision to downshift. It’s taken some getting used to, but it’s been worth it. We have to think twice now about spending money on car repairs and we no longer have any holidays. However, I think it’s made us stronger as a family, and the children are a lot happier.
Liz, however, is not quite sure. “I used to enjoy my job, even though it was hard work and long hours. I’m not really a country girl, but I suppose I’m gradually getting used to looking after the animals. One thing I do like, though, is being able to see more of my children. My advice for other people wanting to do the same is not to think about it too much or you might not do it at all.”
21.The passage tells us that .
A.people seldom work long hours to make money
B.people hardly buy more things than necessary
C.people are sure everything they own is in the right place
D.people realize there is more to life than just making money
22.When Daniel was a reporter he ___.
A.lived in central London B.disliked his job
C.missed his children D.was well paid
23.Daniel and Liz both agree that the move to the farm ____.
A.was easy to organize B.has improved family life
C.was extremely expensive D.has been a total success
24.What does the author mean by saying“the long hours work culture to make more money is eating up their lives” in the second paragraph ?
A.People work long hours to earn their living.
B.To make more money through hard work is the aim of people’s life.
C.Long hours of hard work occupy too much of people’s life.
D.People spent too much time and money eating meals.

Bangkok has become the world’s top tourist destination, with 15.98 million visitors projected to visit Thailand’s capital city this year, according to the third annual Global Destination Cities Index released by MasterCard on Monday. Based on data MasterCard collected from governments, central banks, related public agencies and airlines so far this year, the projection for the entire year says Bangkok is surpassing (超过) London, the previous holder of the top place, by a very narrow margin.
Monday’s report marked the first time an Asian city has been projected to be the top-ranked tourist destination. London came in second, with 15.96 million visitors expected in 2013, and Paris, third, with 13.92 million visitors. MasterCard looked at 132 cities.

The study found that Bangkok is experiencing a large increase in its number of tourists in 2013, up 9.8% from 2009. That compares to New York’s increase at 5.0% and London’s at 3.8%. Paris, meanwhile, saw a small dip in its number of tourists (negative 0.7%).
Caroline Lledo, who was visiting Bangkok from France, said Thailand has many offerings. “We like culture and the people are so nice. We also love shopping here,” Ms. Lledo said. A developer edition of Sony’s augmented reality smart glasses will go on sale in ten countries next month, the tech giant has announced.
Pre-orders for the SmartEyeglass, costing $840 (£620), are now being taken in the UK and Germany, with Japan and the US to follow shortly. The black-framed glasses are compatible (兼容的) with recent Android operating systems. Last month Google announced that it was withdrawing its smart glasses for redevelopment. Sony’s initial model will come with a software development kit to encourage people to design apps for it, the company said.
The glasses, which weigh 77g, contain an accelerometer, gyroscope, compass, image and brightness sensors, 3-megapixel camera and a microphone. They also come with a controller, designed to be attached to clothing, which contains a speaker, touch sensor and the device’s battery. Text is displayed in front of the wearer in monochrome green.
Apple chief executive Tim Cook has been open about his dislike of glasses as a wearable device. “We always thought that glasses were not a smart move, from a point of view that people would not really want to wear them,” he told the New Yorker. “They were intrusive (闯入的), instead of pushing technology to the background, as we’ve always believed.”
Stuart Miles, founder of tech site Pocket-lint, said: “I think [Sony is] wasting their time, energy and effort.”
“Google Glass obviously needed a complete rethink... I can’t see how something thick-rimmed and more invasive-looking than Google Glass is going to catch on.
“People are keen on wearables like fitness bands and watches, but they care about their faces. Wearing something on your head is a lot stronger than wearing something on your arm,” he added. “The industry keeps pushing it but consumers just don’t want it.”
29. In which countries people can get the SmartEyeglass first?
A. The US and Japan. B. The US and the UK.
C. The UK and Japan. D. Germany and the UK.
30. The purpose of this passage is to __________.

B. tell the people that the SmartEyeglass will go on sale

31. What can be inferred from what Stuart Miles said?
A. He supports Sony’s efforts to develop the SmartEyeglass.
B. He cares more about his clothes and face.
C. He dislikes the SmartEyeglass.
D. He really wants to wear them.

Smoking bans in public places are linked with falls in childhood asthma (哮喘) attacks and preterm births (早产), according to the biggest analysis of the influence of public smoking bans on child health. The finding should remove fears that such laws could have the opposite effect because they may lead people to smoke more at home.
Several countries, such as Japan and Australia, have tightened laws on smoking in public places over the last few years. Meanwhile, some countries, such as the Netherlands and Germany, still allow smoking in pubs and restaurants. Only about half of US states have comprehensive bans, and there are few restrictions in poorer nations.
Opponents often claim that bans could result in people smoking more at home, which would be worse for their children’s health. Asthma is one of the main concerns as second-hand smoke harms children’s airways in several ways.
Researchers led by Jasper Been at Maastricht University Medical Centre reviewed as many as 11 studies that examined how hospital admissions for childhood asthma and preterm births changed after smoking bans came in. The studies involved more than 2.5 million births, and nearly 250,000 hospital admissions for asthma.
The result shows that both asthma admissions and preterm birth rates fell by about 10 percent within a year after smoking restrictions were carried out. The effect on preterm births could also have been caused by pregnant women being more likely to quit or cut down following a public ban, says Been. But Been also says the studies could not completely prove that smoking bans directly caused these changes. However, as a matter of fact, because the analysis included several smoking bans introduced in different countries in different years, and most saw health improvements.
Such findings are useful for countries and states where there is ongoing debate about how strict smoking bans should be, especially as hospital care for premature babies is so expensive. This might be one of the most important things to know in order to strengthen legislation (立法).
Other studies have shown that rates of heart attack and stroke also tend to fall after smoking bans are introduced.
32.According to the passage, some oppose smoking bans in public places because .
A.they have much difficulty in quitting smoking
B.they believe it will cause people to smoke more at home
C.smoking bans contributing to health can’t be proved
D.the laws might cause opposite effect on smokers
33.Which is NOT the proper effect of the result of research by Jasper Been?
A.People would accept the laws on smoking bans in public places.
B.More and more countries and states will strengthen smoking bans.
C.Hospital care for premature babies and asthma will be cheaper.
D.Pregnant women will be more likely to follow public smoking bans.
34.Which of the following statements about Been’s research is TRUE?
A.It also proves smoking bans lead to falls of heart attack and stroke.
B.It is related to millions of asthma hospital admissions and births cases.
C.It offers conclusive evidence about smoking bans causing health benefits.
D.It is supposed to prove the effect of smoking bans in public places on health.
35.In their analysis, the researchers drew their conclusion by
A.comparison B.experimenting C.questionnaire D.example
第二部分 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
House Sitting
In many countries of the world people do what is called house sitting. It means that if owners of the house are going away, they want someone to come into their home and look after the house and maybe pets while they are away.
In Australia, many people travel. After people retire, they might buy a van and travel all over the country. 36
So if someone wants to travel or go away for some reason, they might want someone in their home to care for it and keep the gardens tidy. House sitters might have to care for pets. Also, quite a few people have swimming pools in their back yard and they need cleaning. 37 I feel it is a great way of seeing the country, because you go and stay in a new city, get to meet new people, and have time to go sightseeing in a new area.
38 There are websites where you find the advertisements by people who want to travel, and by replying to the advertisement, you can make arrangements to go and look after their home.
There are some requirements to be a house sitter. You must be a trusted person, so that the home owner knows you will not steal anything. You must be able to go when the house owner wants you to go, so you need lots of free time. 39 You need to be good with pets, able to care for cats and dogs, or other pets they may have.
Some house sitting jobs are just for a few days or a couple of weeks while the house owners have a short holiday. Sometimes it is for much longer. We have had one house sit for six months, while the home owner travelled to Europe.
40 Then you can travel to many different countries and stay there. One of the important things to get is references from the home owners where you have stayed. A reference is a written letter to say that you are trustworthy and have looked after their home well. You can show these letters to possible house sitting jobs and they know you will do a good job.
A. I have done house sitting many times.
B. Thousands of people do this all the time.
C. It is also possible to do house sitting in other countries.
D. Generally you have many opportunities to get a house sitting job.
E. You must take a little care over what your description says about you.
F. This is an international house sitting service for all city and country areas.
G. You must have a good car, so you can travel to different parts of the country.

It is recommended that one of the effective ways to make your English writing skills improved should be keeping a diary.
61 (compare) with other form of writing, it takes 62 (little) time as well as being shorter. It is 63 (general) recognized that you will get to learn how to express yourself in English if you insist on practising. Apparently you may meet with 64 good many difficulties at times. The trouble is 65 you can not find appropriate words and phrases to give expression to your mind. In addition, there are lots of idiomatic ways of Chinese appearing in your diary.
66 my point of view, a piece of good advice is that there should be no 67 way more suitable than keeping a notebook and an English dictionary within easy reach. Whenever something 68 (beat) you, put 69 down and then consult the dictionary. Certainly you can get help from your English teacher if necessary. I’m sure it is of great use to keep a diary in English for the 70 (improve) of writing abilities.
