Most of the kids swim there, and there are plenty of rocks for them to use as safe harbors, so I had no fears for his safety.‎ ‎ Still, the firefighter’s first words “You need to come up here to the Stillwater River” made me catch my breath, and his follow-up words gave me relief: “Your son is OK.” ‎ ‎ When I got to the river, I immediately saw the firetruck, ambulance and Anton, wrapped with a towel about his shoulders, sitting quietly on a low platform of the fire engine.‎ ‎ I hurried over to him. “You OK?” I asked ‎ “Yeah,” was all he said. The only words he said were, “What’s for supper?”‎ I spent some time alone that evening, thinking about the tragedy that might have been. The next morning, when Anton got up, I half expected him to tell me the story. But all he did was toast some bread, pull himself together, and head for the door to start a new day. It is the largest of the West Indian rock iguanas, one of the most endangered groups of lizards. This species with red eyes and a thick tail is one of largest lizards in the Caribbean.‎ ‎ The Cuban iguana is primarily herbivorous; 95% of its diet consists of the leaves, flowers and fruits from as many as 30 plant species, including the seaside rock bush and various greases. However, Cuban iguanas occasionally consume animal matter, and individuals have been observed eating the dead flesh of birds, fish and crags. The researchers wrote that quite a few people on Isla Magueyes could have caused this incident.‎ ‎ The Cuban iguana is distributed throughout the rocky southern coastal areas of mainland Cuba and its surrounding islands with a wild population booming on Isla Magueyes, Puerto Rico. It is also found on the Cayman Islands of Little Cayman and Cayman and Cayman Brac, where a separate subspecies occurs. Females guard their nest sites and often nest in sites half destroyed by Cuban crocodiles. To avoid the attack from them, the Cuban iguana often makes its home within or near prickly-pear cacti(仙人掌). ‎ ‎ In general the species is in decline, more quickly on the mainland than on the outlying islands. One of the reasons for their decline if habitat destruction caused by the overconsuming of farm animals, housing development, and the building of tourist resorts on the beaches where the animals prefer to build their nests. Although the wild populations is in decline, the numbers of iguanas have been sharply increased as a result of captive-breading (圈养) and other conservation programs.‎ 10. This is the definition of a word in the Oxford English Dictionary. Do you know which one?‎ ‎ That is right. It is: “ selfie”.‎ In fact, it wasn't even in the dictionary until August of 2013. It earned its place there because people are now so obsessed with (对……痴迷) selfies ─ we take them ‎ when we try on a new hat, play with our pets or when we meet a friend whom we haven't seen in a while.‎ But you might sometimes wonder, does this obsession actually make sense? is there any scientific explanation for it? Well, you should probably ask James Kilner, a neuroscientist(神经系统科学家) at University College London.‎ Through our lifetimes we become experts at recognizing and interpreting other people's faces and facial expressions. In contrast, according to Kilner, we have a very poor understanding of our own faces since we have little experience of looking at them ─ we just feel them most of the time.‎ This has been proved in previous studies, in which participants were shown images of themselves and asked to match their facial expressions in the pictures. In most cases, they failed to accurately produce the same facial expressions without being able to see themselves in the mirror, according to the BBC.‎ To further test how we actually perceive our own faces, Kilner carried out another study, He showed people different versions of their own portrait(肖像) ─ the original, one that had been edited to look less attractive and one that was made more attractive ─ and asked them to pick the version which they thought looked most like them. Kilner found that most people chose the more attractive picture. This suggests that we tend to think of ourselves as better-looking than we actually are.‎ But what does it say about selfies? Well, isn't that obvious? Selfies give us the power to create a photograph ─ by taking it from various angles, with different poses, using filters (滤镜) and so on ─ that better matches our expectations with our actual faces.‎ ‎"You suddenly have control in a way that you don't have in non-virtual(非虚拟的) interactions," Kilner told the Canada-based CTV News. Selfies allow you "to keep taking pictures until you manage to take one you're happy with" , he explained.‎ ‎32.What is the passage mainly about?‎ A. The definition and fun of taking selfies.‎ B. A study of why people love taking selfies.‎ C. How taking selfies influences people's daily lives.‎ D. How to interpret people's facial expressions in their selfies.‎ ‎33.The underlined word "perceive" in Paragraph 5 can be replaced by "______".‎ A. interpret B. beautify C. view D. ignore ‎34.What did Kilner discover from his researcher?‎ A. People tend to spend more time looking at their faces than at others'.‎ B. People tend to believe they look more attractive than they actually are.‎ C. People interpret others' facial expressions worse than their own.‎ D. People who like taking selfies tend to know more about their facial expressions.‎ ‎35.According to Kilner, people like taking selfies probably because they think ______.‎ A. it is a good chance to learn more about their actual faces B. it enables them to interact with their friends in social media C. it allows them to satisfy their expectations with their appearances D. it is a way to respond to others' facial expressions correctly 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)‎ ‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。并将答案涂在答题卡的71—75处 Kids’ health: Four steps for fighting stress ‎ Everybody gets stressed from time to time.___36_____, Some ways of dealing with stress----like screaming or hitting someone –-----don’t solve much.
