His chart showed he had been a patient for only a short time and was near death. As I drove to his house I wondered what I could do for him. Had he gone to college? What kind of work had he done? Had he been successful? Did his family disown him when he was diagnosed with this dread disease? AIDS in the1980s. So many fears. So much still to learn.‎ As I got closer to his house, my anxiety kicked in. What would I be facing? Would he welcome me or be cross? I wondered about the wisdom of taking this hospice job. I knocked and walked inside. Slowly I climbed the stairs, wishing for more stairs. I heard a woman whisper, “She’s here.”The bedroom door was partly open. I was shocked to see a skeleton of a man Walking into the room, I felt like a robot. When I introduced myself, he gave a moan, never opening his eyes. I drew up the pain medication, praying that there would be enough flesh to give the injection. He moaned again as I gently turned him on his side. "So sorry, "I said, as he frowned with pain. This man, not yet thirty-five years old,was actively dying.‎ I asked him if I could ease him into the chair and straighten the sheets on his bed. He didn't speak but nodded his head and opened his eyes. Could he see the compassion in my eyes above the mask? When I asked if he wanted a sip of water, he nodded. I was grateful I could provid some comfort to him.‎ Preparing to leave, I went to my patient to say goodbye. He murmured something, and I bent down closer to hear him. His words surprised me. Where did he get the strength to utter them? He whispered, “There must be a special place in heaven for people like you. ”‎ ‎24. What might be the best title for the text?‎ A. The Service of a Hospice Nurse.‎ B. The Words from an AIDS Patient C. The Pain of a Man with AIDS D. The Skill of Caring for a Patient C There is something very wrong with the system of values in a society that has only unkind terms like nerd and geek for the intellectually curious and academically serious. We all know what a nerd is: someone who wear thick glasses and ugly clothes: someone who knows all the answers to the chemistry or math homework but can never get a date on a Saturday night. And a geek, according to Webster's New World Dictionary,is a street performer who shocks the public by biting off heads of live chickens. It is an obvious fact about our language and our culture that someone devoted to the pursuit of knowledge is compared to such a strange person.‎ Even at a famous educational institution like Harvard, anti-intellectualism(反智主义) is widespread: Many students are ashamed to admit how much they study. The same thing happens in US primary and high schools.‎ Enough is enough. The anti-intellectual values that have spread throughout American society must be fought. There are very few countries in the world where anti-intellectualism runs as high in popular culture as it does in the US. In most industrialized nations, especially in East Asia, a kid who studies hard is praised. But in America, average professional ballplayers are much more respected and better paid than professors of the best universities How can a country where typical parents are ashamed of their children studying mathematics instead of going dancing be expected to compete in the technology race with Japan? How long can America remain a world-class power if we constantly put social skills and physical strength over academic achievement and intellectual ability?‎ Do we really expect to stay afloat largely by bringing in our scientists and intellectuals from abroad,as we have done for a major portion of this century without making an effort to also cultivate(培养)a pro- intellectual culture at home.‎ ‎28. Why does the author mention Webster 's New World Dictionary in Paragraph 2?‎ A. To convince readers with reference from an authoritative.‎ B. To prove that words the author uses in this article are.‎ C. To show the unfairness of calling intelligent people.‎ D. To show that vocabulary use is always up-to-date.‎ ‎29. What can be learned from Paragraph 3 and Paragraph 4?‎ A. The US government doesn't mean to spend much money on education B. Anti-intellectualism is not popular in industrialized countries in East Asia.‎ C. Few students work hard for their grade in famous universities like Harvard.‎ D. Professors earn more than professional basketball players on average in the US.‎ ‎30. What is probably the author’s attitude towards the present society’s anti-intellectual values?‎ A. Neutral B. Supportive C. Concerned D Objective.‎ ‎31. What can be a suitable title for the text?‎ A. What is anti-intellectualism? B. Why does society avoid nerds?‎ C. America needs its nerds D. Don’ t laugh at nerds D If your cellphone suddenly stops working, don't blame service provider. The malfunction(故障)might have been caused by something bigger---a solar storm. Experts expect that earth will see more solar activities in the near future .The malfunction of electronic devices is just one of the effects.‎ Sunspots(太阳黑子) serve as an indicator of the sun’s activity. For the past two years, sunspots have mostly been missing. Their absence, the longest in nearly 100 years, has taken the sun watchers by surprise.‎ When the number of sunspots drops at the end of each ‎1l-year-cycle, solar storms die down and all become much calmer. This “solar minimum” doesn’ t last long. Within a year, sunspots and solar storms begin to build toward a new crescendo, the next solar maximum.‎ What's special about this latest cycle is that the sun is having trouble starting the next solar cycle. The sun began to calm down in late 2007, so no one expected many sunspots in2008. They should return in 2010. Scientists have predicted that the next solar cycle could be the most active on record : more sunspots and more solar storms. However, sunspots are mostly missing now. Since the earth is in close contact with the sun, strong solar activities can bring trouble to our life. People of the 21st century rely on hightech systems for the basics of daily life. Air travel and radio communications can be affected by strong solar activities. A big solar storm could cause 20 times more economic damage than Hurricane Katrina What the sun will do next is beyond our abilities predict. Most astronomers think that the solar cycle will go on but at low level. However, there is also evidence that the sun is losing its ability to produce sunspots. By 2015, they could be gone altogether.‎ ‎32. The sun watchers feel surprised at__________.‎ A. the longest sunspots’ absence B. the largest sunspot number C the malfunction of electronic devices D the serious damage by sunspots ‎33. What does the underlined word“crescendo”in Paragraph 3most probably mean?‎ A small number B high level C usual cycle D. fresh star ‎34. We can infer that in the past two years A. solar activities have brought much trouble to our life B. the number of sunspots has increased to a large extent C. the solar minimum took the place of the solar maximum D. our cellphones have seldom been interrupted by the solar storm ‎35. Which statement does the text lead you to believe?‎ A. Solar activities do no harm to our daily life.‎ B Hurricane Katrina is also a type of solar storms C. It's difficult to predict sunspots.‎ D. I like to smell many wonderful things, like baked bread, roses, fresh vegetables, and chocolate cookies. Text 3 W: My son, Mattie Jackson is 12 years old. M: What does he often do? W: He rides his bike around the neighborhood, plays soccer with his friends and gets good grades from school. Text 4 W: Did you see that sign for the Christmas party next week? M: Yeah, I saw it. What’s up? W: Why would anybody want to do that? We’re all busy with papers. M: You wouldn’t want to attend? Text ‎5 ‎M: It was reported that 1,653 counties in the U.S.‎ lost population between 2010 and 2015. W: What does it mean? M: It means more people are dying than are being born in more than one-third of all counties in the U.S.‎ Text ‎6 ‎M: How did your test go? W: I think I did okay. I hope so. How was the restaurant? Text 10 W: The United States and Canada are not always friendly neighbors. Some Americans actually attacked Canada. It was brought on by two events. The first event took place not in America, but in Ireland. From 1845 to 1852, the potato crop was nearly wiped out by disease. About two million people left Ireland, many coming to the United States with their hatred of Britain because British policies made the suffering even worse. The second event: the American Civil War which was fought between 1861 to 1865, resulted in the deaths of more than 800,000 people. Thousands of these new Irish immigrants had joined the military, and when the war ended they wanted to help free Ireland from the British. They reasoned that since Canada was under British rule at this time, if they could get the British military to start fighting in Canada, it would make it easier for them in Ireland to take control and declare it a separate nation. But it didn’t exactly go as they had planned. After several attempts at attacking Canada, they failed. These attacks were not supported by the American government, of course. They only involved former American soldiers who were acting on their own. Still, we can truthfully say that Americans attacked Canada — and the Canadians won.‎
