She wrote this letter just before hurricane Sandy destroyed the East Coast.‎ Dear readers,‎ The storm will really take a toll on the city! Right now I am sitting in my dormitory, waiting for the blackout(停电)to come any second, and listening to the wind howl outside my windows. Hurricane Sandy is supposed to hit the East Coast hard today. Due to the bad weather, most schools and universities have canceled classes for Monday and Tuesday.‎ Luckily, the university has taken measures to prepare for this storm. University officials sent out e-mails with explanation in the case of a blackout, evacuation(撤离), or other emergency. Just recently, I received several text messages from the school about power off in certain dormitories. They advised us to prepare a bag with essentials(生活必需品), in case we needed to leave the building and relocate to a safer location.‎ Yesterday I went out to buy a flashlight, but all of the nearby stores were sold out. Everyone was stocking up on(存储)water, food and other supplies for the storm.‎ Right now the city is unusually quiet. On any other day, there would be the sounds of cars, people chatting, and street artists performing. Tonight, there’s just the wind and rain hitting the window. The subway system has been closed since last night, and there is rarely anyone on the streets. Hopefully Hurricane Sandy will soon pass without leaving much damage Sincerely,‎ LI Bingyin ‎24. The airport system has been closed since last night.‎ C ‎ Electronic book publishing has many of the same risks and opportunities as electronic music publishing. By delivering text direct to the reader’s computer screen, the e-book could cut down costs, and allow creators to deal directly with their audience, bypassing (绕开)traditional publisher and traders. But it also raises the possibility of mass piracy(盗版). Phil Rance, founder and managing director of Online Originals, a London-based e-book publisher, sums it up,“ No one wants Napster(在线音乐服务)to happen to books ”‎ Indeed, the most popular MP3 may have put the frighteners on an industry that generally operates some way behind the “bleeding edge”. The Meta Group, a leading US-based market researcher, says publishers are far too concerned about protecting their rights, “We believe all the recent legal control over Napster is like putting a finger in a river that is already overflowing. Publishers need to deal with reality and come up with new ways to develop wide electronic distribution(分发), asking the question, ‘How can we use the certainty of wide distribution to our advantage?’ ”‎ At the moment, most publishers would like to limit the use of e-books to the person who bought them, or to the computer used to download them. If that can be done, e-books become just an extra income stream in a publishing industry that would continue to operate the way it does today, according to Terry Robinson, business manager for Adobe’s e-paper group.“ If you’ve cracked the digital rights aspect, you’ve cracked the market, ” he says.‎ Robert Nichols, Books Director at BOL agrees, “Rights management is absolutely important. Publishers just say that ‘until copyright is secure, we’re not going to talk’.” ‎ ‎28. which of the following can be the best title for this text?‎ A. The E-book -----a New and Big Challenge.‎ B. The E-book------ an Extra Income Stream.‎ C. An Economic Rise from E-books.‎ D. Changes Brought by E-books.‎ ‎29. According to the text, what is the similarity of e-books to electronic music?‎ A. They both result from piracy. ‎ B. They both lead to price reduction C. They both avoid industry management. ‎ D. They both bring in much money to creators.‎ ‎30. What do publishers care most about e-books?‎ A. Quality. B. Design. C. Price. D. Copyright.‎ ‎31. From the text, we can infer that _____________.‎ A. most publishers prefer e-books for extra income B. publishers haven’t agreed on rights management up to now C. the publishing markets should be brought back to normal D. wide use of e- books may increase the income D In southern China (not including Hong Kong and Macau), where both Standard Chinese and ‎ local dialects are spoken, well-educated Chinese are generally fluent in Standard Chinese, and most people have a good command of it, in addition to being native speakers of the local dialect. The choice of dialect varies(变化) based on the social situation. Standard Chinese is usually considered more formal and is required when speaking to a person who does not understand the local dialect. The local dialect is generally considered more intimate so it is used among close family members and friends and in everyday conversation within the local area. Parents will generally speak to their children in dialect, and the relationship between dialect and Mandarin(普通话) seems to be mostly stable. Local languages give a sense of identity to local cultures.‎ Knowing the local dialect is of great social benefit, and most Chinese who settled down a new area will try to pick up the local dialect. Learning a new dialect is usually done informally through a process of immersion(沉浸) and recognizing sound shifts. Generally the differences are more pronounced lexically(词汇)than grammatically. Usually, a speaker of one dialect of Chinese will need about a year of immersion to understand the local dialect and about three to five years to become fluent in speaking it. Because of the variety of dialects spoken, there are usually few formal methods for learning a local dialect.‎ Due to the variety in Chinese speech, Mandarin speakers from each area of China are very often likely to "translate" words from their local language into their Mandarin conversations. In addition, each area of China has its recognizable accents while speaking Mandarin. Generally, the nationalized standard form of Mandarin pronunciation is only heard on news and radio broadcasts. Even in the streets of Beijing, the accent of Mandarin varies in pronunciation from the Mandarin heard on the media.‎ ‎32. What can we learn from the text?‎ A. Most people in Hong Kong can speak standard Chinese.‎ B. You will spend a year to become fluent in speaking a local dialect.‎ C. People in Beijing speak nationalized standard form of Mandarin. ‎ D. Most people in Fujian can not only speak local dialect but also standard Chinese.‎ ‎33. In what kind of situation do Chinese speak local dialect?‎ A. When they stay with well-educated Chinese.‎ B. When they stay with those who are from Beijing.‎ C. When they stay with those who are new settlers.‎ D. When they stay with their family members and friends.‎ ‎34. What is the main idea of Paragraph Two?‎ A. How to learn a local dialect.‎ B. The difficulty in learning a local dialect.‎ C. The social benefit of learning a local dialect. ‎ D. Introduce some formal methods for learning a local dialect.‎ ‎35. Why few Chinese can speak the nationalized standard form of Mandarin in daily life?‎ A. The nationalized standard form of Mandarin is too difficult to learn.‎ B. Most Chinese who settled down a new area try to pick up the local dialect.‎ C. The nationalized standard form of Mandarin pronunciation is only heard on news and radio broadcasts.‎ D. Chinese are influenced by their own dialect and accent when they speak Mandarin.‎ 第二节 (共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)‎ ‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ How to Celebrate World Environment Day World Environment Day is a yearly event held to raise global sense of the need to protect our world. 36 People consider it a climax(高潮) of environmental activities being performed all year round by UNEP.
