Has all the hair gone now? I love you and always will.” The nickname, Chris explains, is because he’s clumsy.‎ Kate died two years ago, after a five-year battle with cancer which she got when she was just 29. Before her death, Kate, a consultant in medicine for the elderly, hid the birthday cards along with letters for Chris and other family members—in a box under their bed. Kate had secretly written cards to Chris until the year 2042.‎ Her final act was to tell Chris the location of the box, and make him promise to open the envelopes on the dates written on the front.‎ ‎“She called it a memory box,” explains Chris. Chris had known about it a few years beforehand, but she had never let him look inside. It’s about the size of a shoe box. Chris opened it for the first time on the day she died, July 23, 2016. “She had told me there was a letter for me to open on the day she died, as well as a card to open a week after her death. That was an emotional day, but Kate knew what to say to make me laugh. That day I found the birthday cards—one a year until I turn 50, then one for my 60th birthday and another for my 65th. It stops then because that was when we planned to retire, move to the coast and open a small hotel. She probably wants to make sure I’ve kept my promise.”‎ Chris opened the first birthday card from Kate last April. “To my darling Christopher,” it read. “40 now! You’re getting old! Have a brilliant day!” Reading these cards reminds Chris how lucky he was to spend 15 years with such an amazing woman.‎ ‎31. What can we learn about the birthday cards?‎ A. Chris has opened only one of them so far.‎ B. The first one was written for Chris’s 41st birthday.‎ C. The last one was written for Chris’s 50th birthday.‎ D. Kate left thirteen birthday cards for her husband altogether.‎ ‎32. What did Chris do after his wife’s death?‎ A. He first opened the box a week after her death.‎ B. He read a letter on the day of her death.‎ C. He opened a card on the day of her death.‎ D. He read a letter and a card a week after her death.‎ ‎33. What can we infer about Kate from the text?‎ A. Her husband had many nicknames for her.‎ B. She probably liked joking with her husband.‎ C. She knew her husband often broke his promise.‎ D. She had planned to run a hotel after she recovered.‎ B The 2017 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), also known as the Nations Report Card, was released on April 10, 2018. The report is based on tests of students across the United States. The Department of Education organized the testing.‎ Among the report’s findings was that only about one-third of 8th-grade students were considered proficient(熟练的)in reading and maths. The Department of Education defines proficiency as “solid academic performance”. It says students who reach this level have a good knowledge of the subject and can use their knowledge in real-world situations.‎ About 40 percent of 4th-graders were found to be proficient in reading and maths. The report found just 25 percent of 12th-grade students had maths proficiency, while 37 percent reached that level in reading. In science, 38 percent of 4th-graders were considered proficient, while about 34 percent of 8th-graders reached that level.‎ Results of the latest Report Card were similar to other reports released in recent years. In a statement, U. S, Secretary of Education Betsy Devos said the latest study shows that much can be done to improve the nation’s education system.‎ Devos said she was concerned the latest assessment found major differences between the highest- and lowest-performing students. These differences were widening, she said, although billions of dollars had been spent in an effort to reduce them.‎ Devos praised the state of Florida for being “one bright spot” in the latest Report Card. She said Florida students showed “significant improvement” in 4th-and 8th-grade maths, and 8th-grade reading.‎ Carissa Miller is head of the Council of Chief State School Officers. She said, “The assessment shows much work needs to be done to prepare students at all levels for college, careers and life. It is clear we as a country must do better by all of our students, especially our lowest-performing children. Some students fall too far behind in their studies and we need to ‎ help them.”‎ ‎34. According to the new reports findings, ______________.‎ A. 8th-graders performed better than 12th graders in reading tests B. 12th-graders performed worse than 4th graders in maths tests C. 4th-graders performed the worst in both reading and maths tests D. 4th-graders performed worse in science tests than 8th-graders ‎35. The underlined sentence suggests that _____________.‎ A. American students’ reading scores significantly improved last year B. American students’ maths scores have steadily improved in recent years C. there has been little or no improvement in U.S. students’ reading scores in recent years D. significant changes in reading and maths scores were found among U.S. students ‎36. In the last paragraph, Carissa Miller emphasized the need to ____________.‎ A. focus more on training the most outstanding students B. attach more importance to some major subjects C. make more efforts to help areas with the lowest education levels D. reduce the differences between the best and worst students C Gardeners puzzled by the sudden appearance of an unusual orchid(兰花) or disappointed that their annuals have vanished should not worry. Scientists have discovered that some British flowers can lie dormant(休眠的) under the ground for up to 20 years, coming out to bloom only when the conditions are just right. Researchers at the University of Sussex found at least 114 plant species are capable of living dormant under the soil for up to two decades, enabling them to survive through difficult times. Orchids seem particularly good at being dormant for years at a time, the authors discovered.‎ Michael Hutchings, Professor of Ecology at the University of Sussex, said: “Being underground means they cannot photosynthesise(进行光合作), flower or reproduce. And yet this study has shown that many plants in a large number of species frequently exhibit dormancy. Many of these species have found ways to overcome the loss of opportunities to photosynthesise during dormancy, especially by gradually developing mechanisms enabling them to obtain what they need from soil. This allows them to survive and even grow well during dormant periods.” ‎ The research found that dormancy occurs when the weather is poor, or there is a new threat from animals or competing plants. Sometimes winters are so mild that the plant does not realise that spring has begun. Dormancy in seeds has been widely known about and studied for decades but the phenomenon of dormancy in adult plants is far less well-known and understood.‎ The study, led by University of Tokyo associate professor Richard Shefferson, is the first detailed analysis of the causes. Dormancy appears to be more common near the equator(赤道), where threats from factors such as disease, competition, animals and fire are more severe. Co-author Dr. Eric Menges of Archbold Biological Station in Florida, he USA. said: “In those areas, there appears to be an advantage to plants remaining dormant and then growing when favourable conditions exist for growth and flowering,” Prof. Hutchings added: “Dormancy has evolved and persisted numerous times throughout the evolutionary history of the land plants.‎ ‎37. What does the underlined word mean in the first paragraph?‎ A. Adapted. B. Disappeared.‎ C. Shrunk. D. Woken.‎ ‎38. What does Professor Michael Hutchings mainly talk about in the second paragraph?‎ A. What results dormancy leads to.‎ B. How the orchid lives through dormant periods.‎ C. Why some species can survive terrible circumstances.‎ D. How the orchid developed mechanisms to get energy.‎ ‎39. What can we learn from the passage?‎ A. Most gardeners don’t want to plant orchids.‎ B. Orchids are the only plants that can be dormant for years.‎ C. Dormancy in seeds is far less well-known and understood.‎ D. Dormancy in plants is common in regions along the equator.‎ ‎40. What is the best title for the passage?‎ A. Survival of the Fittest B. New Research on Dormancy in Orchids C.
