Which hotel would invite artists to come to work every year?‎ A. Propeller‎ Bland ‎City Lodge. B. Arian‎ Amazon ‎Towers.‎ C. The Ice Hotel. D. Bahama‎ ‎Beach Club.‎ B.‎ What are two things that make humans different from animals? One is language, and the other is music. It is true that some animals can sing ( and many birds sing better than a lot of people). However, the songs of animals, such as birds and whales, are very limited. It is also true that humans, not animals, have developed musical instruments.‎ ‎ Music is strange stuff. It is clearly different from language. However, people can use music to communicate things -- especially their emotions. When speech is added to music in a song, it is a very powerful form of communication. ‎ If music is truly different from speech, then we should process(加工) music and language in different parts of the brain. The scientific study suggests that this is true. For example, Vissarion Shebalin, a Russian composer, had a stroke in 1953. It injured the left side of his brain. He could no longer speak or understand speech. He could, however, still compose music until his death ten years later. On the other hand, sometimes strokes cause people to lose their musical ability, but they can still speak and understand speech.‎ Why does music have such a strong effect on us physically and emotionally? That is a harder question to answer. Geoffrey Miller, a researcher at University College, London, thinks that music and love have a strong connection. Music requires special talent, practice, and physical ability. That's why it may be a way of showing your fitness to be someone's mate. For example, singing in tune or playing a musical instrument requires fine muscular (肌肉)control. You also need a good memory to remember the notes. And playing or singing those notes correctly suggests that your hearing is in excellent condition. Finally ,when a man sings to the woman he loves (or vice versa), it may be a way of showing off.‎ ‎ However, Miller's theory still doesn't explain why certain combinations of sounds influence our emotions so deeply. For scientists, this is clearly an area that needs further research.‎ ‎25. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?‎ A. To introduce the main topic. B. To show the author’s attitude.‎ C. To analyze causes. D. To describe a process.‎ ‎26. Music is considered especially powerful when it_______.‎ A. is translated into a language B. is mixed with speech C. is sung by some famous musician D. exists with the cry of an animal ‎27. The example of Vissarion Shebalin is used to show that______.‎ A. he is one of the luckiest persons ‎ B. he is really interested in composing music C. the brain deals with music and language separately D. music and language are two different things ‎ ‎28. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?‎ ‎ A. Effects of music on humans B. A study on how music works.‎ ‎ C. Reasons why music affects us. D. Ways of using music in daily life.‎ C Sitting and eating quietly on his father’s lap, the 18-month-old was oblivious to the infection in his veins(血管). But his father, a strong farmer, knew only too well. It was the same one that killed his wife four months ago, leaving him alone with four children. The man started to cry.‎ ‎ “When my wife died, I thought ,well, it is from God, but at least I have him.” he said. “Then ‎ I learned he is sick, too. I asked if there was medicine and the doctors said no. ‎ HIV and AIDS have quietly arrived in this land. They remain almost completely underground, hidden in ignorance(无知)and shame. ‎ The father of the infected 18-month-old said his village teacher had never talked about AIDS. Nearly a year of tests on the father have found no HIV, and the old children are clear, but his smallest child tested positive(阳性)at ten months. ‎ Six years earlier, his wife lost a baby and have several transfusions(输血) in Pakistan. After she became sick and was found to be infected, “I told the family her blood was not good and to avoid eating with her.” he said. “And I told them not to kiss his son, he burst into tears. ‎ ‎“I don’t know what to do,” he said; “I have sacrificed so much since my marriage. I mortgaged (抵押)half my land to pay for her medical care.”‎ The father can do little for his son but keep his secret. There are no AIDS treatment centers in Afghanistan, only a single secret clinic in the capital that just monitors the disease, and no drugs are available.‎ ‎29. The underlined part “was oblivious to” in Paragraph 1 means______.‎ A. was shocked by B. was afraid of C. was curious about D. didn’t know about ‎30.What happened to the man?‎ A. He was diagnosed(诊断) with AIDS just now.‎ B. He has no money to support the family.‎ C. His wife died of AIDS four weeks ago.‎ D. Afghanistan’s medical conditions have been greatly improved. ‎ D For many years, I strongly believed that my suffering was because of my size. I imagined that when the weight disappeared, it would take old wounds, hurts and rejections(拒绝)with it.‎ Many people with weight problems also mistakenly believe that changing our bodies will fix everything. Perhaps our mistake believes that being thin equals being loved, being special, and being cared for. We fantasize(幻想) about what it will be like when we reach the long-awaited goal. We work very hard to realize this dream. Then, at last, we find ourselves there.‎ But we often gain back what we have lost. Even so, we continue to believe that next time it will be different. Next time, we will keep it off. Next time, being thin will finally bring us happiness, self-worth, and, of course, love.‎ It took me a long time to realize that there was something more for me to learn about beauty. Different cultures have different standards (标准) of beauty. In Samoa a woman is not considered ‎ attractive unless she weighs more than 200 pounds. More importantly, if it’s happiness that we want, why not put our energy there rather than on the size of our body? Why not look inside? Many of us struggle hard to change our body, but in vain. We have to find a way to live comfortably inside our body and make friends with and care for ourselves. When we change our attitudes towards ourselves, the whole world changes.‎ ‎33. The passage tries to point out the importance of ____________.‎ ‎   A. body size                                B. different beauty standards ‎   C. culture difference                      D. attitudes towards life ‎34. What can be inferred about the author?‎ ‎   A. The author is a Samoan.‎ ‎   B. The author got wounded in wars or accidents.‎ ‎   C. The author succeeded in losing weight.‎ ‎   D. The author has been troubled by her/his weight.‎ ‎35. Which of the following statements is true?‎ A. One’s happiness is determined by a person’s weight.‎ B. Not all countries take being thin as the standard of beauty.‎ C. It’s entirely wrong to care about whether a person is fat or not.‎ D. Before the middle of the 5th century, people in Britain all spoke a language 62 (call) Celtic. By the 10th century, Old English 63 (become) the official language of England. 64 we speak English today, we sometimes feel puzzled about which word or phrase to use. This is 65 English has many words and phrases from different languages, but with similar meaning. Middle English was from around the 12th to the 15th century. Many things played an important part in the 66 (develop) of this new type of English. The most contribution was from the Normans, a French-speaking people 67 defeated England and took control of the country in 1066. However, the Norman Conquest did not affect English 68 much as the Angles and the Saxon’s victory about 600 years earlier, which led to Old English replacing Celtic. Modern English appeared during the Renaissance in the 16th century. The question of whether English will keep on 69 (change) in the future is easy to answer. 70 is certain that people will keep inventing new words and new ways of saying things.‎ 第二节:短文改错 (共10小题,每小题1分,满分10分)‎ 假定英语课上老师要求同桌之间交换修改作文,请你修改你同桌写的以下作文。文中共有10处语言错误,每句中最多两处。错误涉及一个单词的增加、删除或修改。 ‎ 增加: 在此处加一个漏字符号(∧),并在其下面写出修改的词。‎ 删除: 把多余的词用斜线(\)划掉。‎ 修改: 在错的词下划一横线,并在其下面写出修改后的词。‎ 注意: 1. 每处错误及其修改均仅限一词;‎ ‎ 2. 只允许修改10处,多者(从11处起)不计分。‎ Today is Mother’s Day.
