For the first time, Chinese astronauts can enjoy tea in space, where drinking is not an easy thing to do, considering the gravity-free situation.
During the month-long trip aboard the Shenzhou XI spaceship, which returned to earth this month, astronauts JinHaipeng and Chen Dong revealed how they drank tea on a TV show. They used a specially made tea cup and a special Pu’er cream to drink tea while standing upside down.
The Pu’er tea cream they drink is produced in Yunnan province, which is known for its pu’er tea industry.
“Drinking water in space means the astronauts squeeze the water from a special bag.
Drinking hot tea is harder,” said Jiang Xiaowei, vice-chairman of the Yunnan space biotechnology association. The difficult part of drinking tea in space is that there should not be anything left after the tea dissolves in water, Jiang said. Also, the solubility(溶解度)of the tea should be low since water in space can only be warmed to 60 degrees centigrade at most.
The tea cream the astronauts drank is produced by Kunming-based Gongrunxiang Tea Industry Corp. It was founded in 1993 by the Kunming branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Zhang Guanghui, president of Gongrunxiang, said that the company aims to produce a tea cream that’s a safe, healthy and convenient tea product. Tea products are often reported to be polluted by pesticide residues and heavy metals. “I never imagined that one day our tea cream would help astronauts to drink tea in space,” Zhang said, adding that drinking tea in space can be seen as a turning point for the floundering(挣扎的) Pu’er tea industry.
For a long time there’s been little added value for tea products because it’s an industry heavily dependent on individual tea planters.
“For us, astronauts’ drinking tea in space means our biotechnology applied to the tea industry has had some achievements,” Zhang said.
Wang Pinghua, deputy director of the agriculture department of Yunnan province, said that in the future, more tea producers will use technology to upgrade the tea industry.
58. We can learn from the passage that ______.
A. the astronauts revealed how they drank tea after returning to the earth
B. astronauts are able to enjoy tea in space for the first time in history
C. the technology applied to the tea industry might help the corporation out
D. the tea cream is reported to be polluted by pesticide and heavy metals
59. Which is NOT the reason why it’s difficult for the astronauts to drink hot tea in space?
A. There should be nothing left after the tea dissolves.
B. The solubility of the tea should remain unchanged.
C. They have to use a kind of specially made tea cup.
D. Drinking is very hard in the gravity-free situation.
60. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Drinking Tea in Outer Space B. A Turning Point for the Tea Industry
C. The Month-long Trip in Space D. Time to Upgrade the Tea Industry

Facebook is working on automatically flagging offensive material in live video streams, building on a growing effort to use artificial intelligence(人工智能)to monitor content, said Joaquin Candela, the company’s director of applied machine learning.
The social media company has been involved in a number of content moderation debates this year, from facing international outcry after removing a Vietnam War photo to allowing the spread of fake news on its site.
Facebook has historically relied mostly on users to report offensive posts, which are then checked by Facebook employees against company “community standards”. Decisions on especially troublesome content issues that might require policy changes are made by top executives at the company.
Candela told reporters that Facebook increasingly was using artificial intelligence to find offensive material. It is “an algorithm(算法)that detects violence, or any of the things that are not according to our policies,” he said.
The company already had been working on using automation to flag extremist video content, as Reuters reported in June. Now the automated system also is being tested on Facebook Live, the streaming video service for users to broadcast live video.
Using artificial intelligence to flag live video is still at the research stage, and has two challenges, Candela said. “One, your computer vision algorithm has to be fast, and I think we can push there, and the other one is you need to prioritize(区分优先) things in the right way so that a human looks at it, an expert who understands our policies, and takes it down.”
Facebook said it also uses automation to process the tens of millions of reports it gets each
week, to recognize copied reports and route the flagged content to reviewers with the appropriate subject matter expertise.
Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg in November said Facebook would turn to automation as part of a plan to identify fake news. Ahead of the Nov. 8 U.S. election, Facebook users saw fake news reports incorrectly declaring that Pope Francis supported Donald Trump and that a federal agent who had been investigating Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton was found dead.
However, determining whether a particular comment is hateful or bullying, for example, requires context, the company said.
Yann LeCun, Facebook’s director of AI research, declined to comment on using AI to detect fake news, but said generally news feed improvements provoked questions on how to assess the content. “These are questions that go way beyond whether we can develop AI,” said LeCun.
61. What has Facebook mainly used to monitor content in history?
A. Artificial intelligence. B. Reporting from Facebook users.
C. Top executives’ judgment. D. Facebook employees’ checking.
62. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. The company began to use automation last June.
B. The company has depended on AI to monitor content.

63. The following are the challenges in using AI to monitor content EXCEPT that ______.
A. you have to make comments on the materials
B. things need to be prioritized in the right way
C. you need to understand the context of the content
D. the computer vision algorithm has to be fast
64. Which can replace the underlined word “provoked” in the last paragraph?

I was doing a big clean up in the early part of last year and my kids were helping. As he went through boxes and bags, one of my sons came across a knotted handkerchief with an old dark brown coin nestled inside. “Mum, can I have this? Can I play with this in my cash register?” he asked. I took one look and was immediately transported to another time. “You can play with all your coins, but not this one,” I said slowly. “This one’s special. I will never again see the woman who gave this to me.” I fingered the coin gently. “This coin is worth much more than its monetary(货币的) value.”
My son looked at me strangely and I explained. In 1991, I had spent five months in an African country, Niger, damaged badly by sandstorms and blistering heat. There were many things I found difficult about this place – the climate and beggars were my biggest and most constant complaints. Homeless street children would continually thrust their hands into your face, shouting “Cadeau! Cadeau! (gift)” in French, the former colonial tongue.
After I’d finished my nursing stint there, a friend and I headed for a neighboring country, Burkina Faso, to work in a health clinic.
“It’s much greener in Burkina. Even the Coke tastes better.” the locals assured us.
Arriving by taxi at our destination in Burkina, we began to unload. I had a large backpack and a smaller daypack. With my daypack wedged between my legs, I reached for my larger piece of luggage. Out of the darkness, a motorbike with two men approached slowly. Without warning, one of the men grabbed my daypack as the motorbike swept close by. Within seconds, the two were out of sight, swallowed up by the night.
The bag had my passport, money, traveller’s cheques, camera, an airline ticket and other things precious to me. I was in deep trouble. And the nearest Australian consulate (大使馆) was in Ethiopia.
In the weeks that followed, I guarded the rest of my valuables and regarded all locals with suspicion (怀疑). I put up with questions by the authorities with great frustration. All I wanted was
to leave this hellhole.
Then, walking through Burkina’s streets one day, I was accosted (搭讪) by an old woman who thrust her hand in my face. “Cadeau! Cadeau!” she cried.
I’d had enough. I was sick and tired of the country: its poverty and corruption, its thieves, its inefficiency, the heat, the dust and its time-wasting officials. I told her firmly in French, “I have no ‘cadeau’. I have no money. A thief stole all my money two weeks ago and now I can’t get out of your country. I cannot give you anything.”
The beggar woman listened attentively and thought carefully about my words. Then her face crumpled into a toothless smile as she reached into the folds of her dress.
“Then I will give you a cadeau,” she announced. Kindly, she placed an old, dark brown coin in my palm. I looked at it in shock. It was an extremely small amount of money – but for this woman, the coin represented a meal. In that moment, I felt the shame of affluence (富裕) and the humility of charity. She had given me a gift disproportionate (不成比例的) to anything that I had ever donated. In the midst of her poverty, she was able to give me something priceless.
I saw then the unexpected beauty of the people of Burkina Faso – and appreciated greatly the quiet dignity of the poor. Humbled by the old woman’s gift, I hope never to part with the coin she gave me. With one small token, she turned my attitudes upside down.

⑤ I went to work in a health clinic in Burkina.
A. ②⑤③④① B. ①⑤③②④ C. ②③⑤④① D. ①④③②⑤

A. The writer seldom complained about the beggars in the streets.
B. The writer had her bag stolen immediately she arrived in Niger.
C. The locals helped the writer find the bag despite her suspicion.

Nowadays, a common problem that English learners face is that their listening ability is poor.
Pascal Hamon, the Academic Director at the English Language Institute at Missouri State University, talks about how people can improve their listening skills.
Listening is very important. Some learners want to build up general English skills, while others want to take exams that involve listening skills. Take the TOEFL exam, for example. International students who want to attend an American college or university are often required to pass TOEFL, short for the Test of English as a Foreign Language. This test has a listening section. It asks students to show their ability to understand short and long conversations in English. Whether you want to build up general English skills or prepare for a test, being able to understand spoken English is a necessity. And you will not get better at this skill unless you practice! Pascal Hamon says that listening exercises should force English learners to focus on turning the sounds that they hear into words. Then, learners must use their brains to turn these words into a message. Building up listening skills does not have to be boring, says Hamon. There are fun, game-like activities that build up listening skills. One such activity, Hamon says, is to make transcriptions.
What is transcription? Transcribing is the act of writing down the words that have been spoken. English learners should start working with transcriptions by finding audio or video material that has a transcript with it, Hamon says. If English learners make some mistakes, Hamon says that they should always try to learn from their mistakes. English learners should think, Hamon adds, about what they could do better. By identifying problems, and repeating the exercise, English learners will improve their listening skills.
What can you do? You can start practicing transcription on your own by following these steps:
First, find audio that has a printed transcript, but do not look at the words. You should choose audio that is right for your level. Second, listen to a short section of the audio many times. After you have listened many times, try to write down what you hear. Third, compare what you wrote against the story. Finally, think about, as Hamon suggested, where you had problems. Ask yourself the following questions: What do I need to improve? What words or sounds did I not hear?
In a word, when you transcribe something, you do not always have to choose a news story. You could choose a song or part of a movie that you like. Just make sure that you are able to find a transcript for it to check your work.
Introduction
Nowadays, English learners have (71) ▲ in listening. Hamon gives us some (72) ▲ on improving the listening skills.

81. 请阅读下面短文,并按照要求用英语写一篇150词左右的文章。
The authors of the American Declaration said that happiness is one of the essential rights that
make life worth living.
William James once said that if we were to ask the question: “What is human life’s main concern?”, one of the answers we should receive would be: “It is happiness”.
Some people are rich; they think they are happy. Other people have many friends, so they feel happy. Still others are happy because their lives are meaningful. Happiness attracts everyone. For children, happiness often suggests eating something good or playing with toys. For a stamp collector, stamps bring more delight than meals. And for a scientist, a discovery or an invention rather than anything else gives him greatest satisfaction.
Happiness has been related to pleasure, relief from pain, contentment, family reunion, friendship, wealth, honor, and successful activity. The concept of happiness, while difficult to define, is obviously here to stay.
While the desire for happiness can set up expectations that are often hard to fulfill, people never stop to have a rest on the way to happiness.

Different people give various definitions about happiness, which is a vital part of people’s lives. Though the process of pursuing happiness means devotion, sacrifice and hard work, people will never give up. (34words)
As for me, happiness means the pleasure when I attain my goals which I set at different stages. As we all know, success never comes easy. When you achieve your goal after working on it for a long time, you will feel the fulfillment overwhelms you, no matter what obstacles you met on the way to it.
As far as I am concerned, as a teenager, I will spare no effort to be devoted to learning. High school is a time of learning and reflection. To graduate with honors is no easy task, as are the chances of being admitted into key universities. So just as the saying goes, early birds catch worms. I will treasure every minute and make every moment worthwhile. (156words)

M: Did anyone call while I was out?
W: Only your wife. She wants you to pick up some milk on your way home.
M: OK, thanks, Sarah. I’m headed to my next meeting now.
Text3
M: Can you lend me 30 yuan?
W: I had 50 yuan, but I have just spent 30 yuan.
Text4
M: Are you ready yet? You’ve been spending a long time on your math homework.
W: I’m having trouble with this problem. I don’t know what a hundred times a thousand is.
Text 5
M: We’re at the Holiday Inn now. How do we get to the airport?
W: We have buses leaving for the airport from the downtown area every 20 minutes. The bus stops at the Holiday Inn as well. Be sure to get on the bus before 7: 30.
Text 6
W: Why do you only eat with your right hand?
M: Oh, I learned to do that when I was traveling. In the African country of Ethiopia, that’s their custom. It’s considered very bad manners to eat with your left hand.
W: Why is that?
M: They consider it dirty, l think.
W: What if you’re eating a sandwich? I can never eat a sandwich with only one hand.
M: Well, they make their food so that they only need one hand to eat it with, mainly meats and vegetables in sauce. And they make a very different kind of bread there. Instead of spoons and forks, Ethiopians use the bread to get their food.

M: I have bad news.
W: What happened? You look sad... Is your mother sick?
M: No... The rent is going up again.
W: That’s too bad. How much this time?
M: Too much for us to afford. You know I’m making less money now.
W: I know. And l haven’t been able to work as much. Well. Where are we going to move now?
M: I don’t know. Rents are very expensive here. But I have an idea...
W: What is it?
M: You’re not going to like this. But I think we should move in with my mother.
W: um!
M: Listen, we wouldn’t have to pay as much rent, maybe only half of what we pay now. She has two free bedrooms, so we would have enough space. And my mother is gone for most of the day. She goes to dinners, concerts and movies with friends on the weekends. She’s really active, so she isn’t home much.

W: What are you doing with these books?
M: Giving them away.
W: Why? I thought you loved them.
M: I do, but I can’t take them all with me. My apartment in Chicago will be smaller than this place.
W: Are you keeping any?
M: I will ship one box to my new apartment. But the ones by the door, I’m giving away. You should see if you want any of them.
W: OK. Maybe I’ll take a few... Oh, the Lord of the Rings. I’ve always wanted to read this.
M: Take it. It’s a good read. I’d also recommend Harry Porter
W: No, thanks. I’ve already read it. How about this book by Ernest Hemingway, The Old Man and the Sea? Is it any good?
M: Yeah. Here, you should take The Sun Also Rises, too. It’s his most famous one.
W: OK, I will take both. But I don’t need any more. I have too many unread books already.
Text 9
M: Do you like to travel, Suzy?
W: Oh, definitely. I travel every chance I get.
M: What do you mean? We’re full-time students. The only time we really get to travel is during the summer.
W: Well, I also try to go on a trip during the winter break, and again during spring
break. I also take lots of smaller trips whenever we have a three-day weekend.
M: How do you manage to find time to travel so much? Don’t you have to spend time with your family?
W: Yeah, and we do that in different places! They love to travel, too. We never spend a family vacation in the same place twice!
M: Wow. Doesn’t that get a little bit expensive, though?
W: Well, it’s certainly not cheap. But both my parents work hard, and they save up all their money to go places with us. I also try to save all the money I get from my part-time job so I can go on my own little trips.
M: Don’t you find it difficult to keep up with your school work.
W: Not at all. I go to the library every day, and 1 never waste my time going to parties. If I use my time wisely when I’m in school, I can have more fun outside school.
