A great writer, playwright, author and translator, Yang Jiang, also known as Yang Jikang, passed away at the age of 105 on May 25. Her husband once described her as “the most virtuous (贤惠的) wife and the most talented woman”.
Born into a wealthy and educated family in Wuxi, Jiangsu province, in 1911, Yang studied at Soochow University and then entered the graduate school of Tsinghua University, where she met and married her husband Qian Zhongshu, an equally famous author who penned the very popular novel Fortress Besieged, which was adapted into a hit TV series in 1990.
After they got married in 1935, the couple went to Britain and France together for further study. Then Yang returned in 1938 and became a foreign language professor at Tsinghua University. She was also a literature researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences’ foreign literature study center.
Fluent in English, French and Spanish, her translation of Spanish novel Don Quixote was published in 1978. When the Spanish king and queen visited China, then-leader Deng Xiaoping gave the royal couple Yang’s translation as a gift.
Her other famous works include the memoir Six Chapters, a humorous description of the difficult times she and her husband faced when sent to work on farms in the late 1960s and early 1970s during the Cultural Revolution. Yang also wrote many plays, novels and essays and is known for her plain but powerful style of writing. After her husband died in 1998, Yang wrote
another memoir called We Three in 2003, recalling her husband and her daughter, Qian Yuan, who died of cancer one year before her father’s death. It became a bestseller both in China and overseas.
Yang never stopped writing. At 96, Yang surprised the world with Reaching the Brink of Life, a philosophical work whose title is a reference to her husband’s collection of essays called Marginalia to Life

Ask any random (随机的) collection of strangers what they look for in a friend, and you’ll get pretty similar answers: someone who’s fun to be around; someone who shares your sense of humor; someone you can trust. But often, friendship begins long before any of those things can come to light in any meaningful way.
According to one survey, around 60 percent of men and half of women believe in love at first sight. And I believe that many have experienced that moment. However, when you meet someone new and feel the friendship blooming in your heart — you just understand that a bond is about to form. Call it a spark (火花), call it chemistry, or call it friendship at first sight; whatever it is, it can happen in just a small handful of seconds, which is the amount of time we need to form a first impression (印象) of someone.
In a study published in Nature, researchers identified two areas of the brain that become especially active when we meet someone new: the amygdala, the area of the brain that deals with emotion, and the posterior cingulate cortex, which is linked to autobiographical memory. As Karla Starr noted, the posterior cingulate cortex also helps us weigh decisions and assign (分配) value to objects; we go through a very similar process with humans. “And after we’ve assigned a value to a person, we make the decision about how to get along with that person,” she wrote. “Do we want to get closer? Knowing what this person’s value is to us, do we want this person to be involved in our network?”
The answer is actually a collection of several smaller judgments, explains Kelly Campbell, a professor at California State University. “What are the things we care about in a friend? We care about someone who’s fun so that we can enjoy ourselves with. You need emotional support, social support, you want them to be loyal and trustworthy, and you don’t want to feel judged,” she says. “When you first see the person, you don’t realize how many judgments you’re making, but you’re actually gathering information that’s telling you if this person fills those needs for you.”
Last year, Campbell carried out a study on “friendship chemistry,” which she and her colleagues defined as “an immediate connection between friends that is easy and makes the relationship seem natural.” (Friendship chemistry, Campbell mentioned, is one subset (子集) of “interpersonal chemistry,” which includes romantic relationships.) I am here with students at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia. And we’ve got students listening from all across America, from kindergarten to 12th grade. I know that for many of you, today is the first day of school. And for those of you in kindergarten, or starting middle or high school, it’s your first day in a new school, so it’s understandable if you’re a little nervous. I imagine there are some seniors out there who are feeling pretty good right now — with just one more year to go. And no matter what grade you’re in, some of you are probably wishing it were still summer and you could stay in bed.
I know that feeling. When I was young, my family lived overseas. I lived in Indonesia for a few years. And my mother didn’t have the money to send me where most American kids went to study, but she thought it was important for me to keep up with an American education. So she decided to teach me extra lessons herself, Monday through Friday. But because she had to go to work, the only time she could do it was at 4:30 in the morning. Now, as you might imagine, I wasn’t too happy about getting up that early. And a lot of times, I’d fall asleep right there at the kitchen table. But whenever I complained, my mother would just give me one of those looks and she’d say, “This is no picnic for me either.” So I know that some of you are still adjusting to being back at school.
But I’m here today because I have something important to discuss with you. I’m here because I want to talk with you about your education and what’s expected of all of you in this new school year. That’s what I want to focus on today: the responsibility each of you has for your education. I want to start with the responsibility you have to yourself. Every single one of you has something that you’re good at. Every single one of you has something to offer. And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is. That’s the opportunity an education can
provide.
Maybe you could be a great writer but you might not know it until you write that English paper. Maybe you could be an inventor but you might not know it until you do your project for your science class. And no matter what you want to do with your life, I guarantee that you’ll need an education to do it. And this isn’t just important for your own life and your own future. What you make of your education will decide nothing less than the future of this country. The future of America depends on you. What you’re learning in school today will determine whether we as a nation can meet our greatest challenges in the future. W: What does it take to make you excited, then?

W: Good afternoon, Mr. Smith. Have you planted a garden this year?
M: Oh, boy! You should see everything I’m growing in my backyard. There are beans, cucumbers, tomatoes, and several kinds of carrots.
W: You have fruit trees back there, too, right?
M: I do. I have an apple tree and a pear tree. I actually have a bunch of ripe pears. (8)You can take them to your family.
W: Thanks, Mr. Smith. But I’m off to volleyball practice right now. (9)My brother is home, though. He can come get some from you.
M: I thought your brother had an afterschool job.
W: He does. He works at the grocery store…but only on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

M: It was hit by a truck, which left those marks there. (10)It really makes me mad.
W: Is the truck driver going to pay you for the damage?
M: He’s saying the marks were already there.
W: What the hell?! That’s ridiculous. What are you going to do?
M: I have to go to court. (11)A policeman was there so he can prove that the marks weren’t there.
W: Oh, I’d be really angry if that happened to me.
M: I got an estimate and it’s $4000. (12)
W: Oh, my gosh.
M: Well, we’ll see what happens in court!

W: Hello, Mr. Fox. How are you feeling this evening?
M: Not too good, I’m afraid. I’m still getting these awful headaches.
W: I’m sorry to hear that, Mr. Fox. How long has this been going on?
M: About six months. (13)
W: Oh, dear. Well, the pills I gave you last time haven’t helped, obviously. I’m beginning to think that your headaches are being caused by stress. (14) So, what do you do for work, Mr. Fox?
M: I’m a policeman. (15)
W: Oh, that is a very stressful job. I suggest that you take some time off and spend it with your family. Try and relax. I’ll see you again in a couple of weeks, and we’ll see how you feel. Trust me, no man can do his best if he doesn’t rest once in a while.
M: I understand. It will be hard not to go to work, but I need to take better care of myself. (16)

So, here we are. As I told you, the country schoolhouse was three miles from my uncle’s farm. You wouldn’t imagine that there would be a school in the woods, would you? (17) The house held about 24 boys and 20 girls at that time. We went to school once or twice a week in summer. All the pupils brought their lunches in baskets – corn cakes, milk, and other good things. (18)We sat in the shade of the trees at noon and ate them. You know how old I was when I went to this school for the first time? I was seven. (19)I can still remember what happened that day. A fifteen-year-old girl stopped me at the gate and asked me if I was used to smoking. I said no. She made a face at me and made fun of me to the crowd, saying, “Here is a boy who is seven years old and can’t even smoke!” I didn’t understand why that could have possibly been a bad thing, (20) and I continued to my classroom.
