year. They do not come to see the beautiful scenes( 景色) 41 eat delicious food. They come to listen to a kind of 42 sound: the Taos Hum.
The word “hum” means a low sound that never stops. 43 is the sound strange?
Firstly, the Taos Hum that people hear is quite 44 . Someone says it sounds like a little bee flying around you. Others think it sounds like a car moving in a faraway (遥远 的) place. Secondly, 45 knows where the sound comes from. Joe Mullins, a scientist
from the University of New Mexico, is one of the first persons to do 46 on the hum. He put some instruments in places where people could hear the hum, but those
instruments couldn’t “hear” any hum! Others who wanted to find the hum failed, too.
Many people try to
47
the strange sound. Someone says it is a noise made by
insects. Someone believes it must come from some secret projects. Someone says there

to listen to the hum, but it is not for people who

If you find your young child is telling a lie, don’t worry. According to Canadian researchers, it’s quite normal. The research tested 1,200 children. They were two to seventeen years old. The study showed that those who were able to tell a lie had reached an important stage of development.
Only one fifth of two-year-olds tested in the study were able to tell a lie and nearly 50% of three-year-olds could tell a lie. By the age of four, the study found 90% were able to lie. Almost every child at the age of twelve told lies. But, by the age of 16, just 65% of 16-year-olds told a lie.
Dr. King Lee from Toronto University was the leader of the research team. He said, “Parents shouldn’t be worried if their child tells a lie. Almost all children lie. It shows
that their brains are developing fast and means they are more likely to(更可能) have
successful lives.” He added, “They might even be great people in later life.”
Why? Because kids that can lie have developed an ability which includes keeping the truth at the back of their brains. For small children, telling a lie can show intelligence
(智力)——quick thinking; it is an ability to hide the truth and make up the lie in their
brains at the same time.

You might get into trouble for talking in class, but experts have found that talking to your classmates can be helpful. “Students should be encouraged to explain things,” they say.
What helps you to learn? Do you like working in groups or on your own? Are there times when it’s good to talk in a lesson?
Talking in class distracts(使分心) you from getting on with your work.
Eliza At the end of the lesson, our teacher lets us talk about what we’ve learned in class, I think
that’s a good idea. It helps us to remember what we’ve done and we can ask questions.
Danny Our teacher sometimes tells us off(责备)for talking in class. It’s true that if you’re
talking too much, you won’t hear what the teacher is saying, so you won’t learn anything.
Judy Sometimes I’m scared to ask the teacher a question, so I often ask a classmate instead
of asking my teacher.
Tara
Sharing ideas with friends helps me to learn. And you can learn by comparing
answers.
Sam
We are not allowed to talk during important subjects like science and math. That seems OK to me. You can’t do experiments(实验)and talk at the same time. You need to
do experiments carefully!
Ted
I often get into trouble for talking too much. That’s why I like my Chinese lessons. You
have to talk a lot because you need to practice speaking Chinese.

Maybe you often argue with your parents about clothes, homework, friends and many other personal things. But what’s going on when your parents fight with each other?
Most teenagers must be sorry or even frightened when their parents fight. They might think their parents don’t love each other any more and that would cause them to divorce(离婚).
In fact, it is normal for parents to disagree and argue from time to time. They might disagree about important things like jobs or family decisions. They might even disagree about little things that don’t seem important at all-like what’s for dinner or what time someone gets home. Maybe sometimes parents can feel so strongly about their differences that it may lead to(导致) arguments. However, these arguments are often over quickly.
Parents may apologize(道歉)and make up, and the family gets back into its usual way.
As a family member, you should find out what it really means when your parents fight. When your parents get unhappy with each other, they might cry or say things they don’t really mean. Most people lose their cool now and then, So if your parents are fighting, don’t worry too much about it. Try to find a good way to solve it.
If your parents’ fight really disturbs you, you might find it hard to sleep or go to school. If this happens, try talking to one or both of your parents about their behavior. They may not even realize how unhappy you are until you tell them how their arguments affect you. You can also tell other relatives, a teacher or a trust friend.
Just remember that no family is perfect and arguments are common in every family. ( )61. Which of the following is not mentioned about what teenagers and parents
argue about in the passage?

九年级英语试卷第 12 页(共 10 页)
TV plays were the “perfect” examples. They always made freshly cooked meals and had a tidy house. It was their full-time job to care for the children and the home. It meant that the home was the real centre of mothers’ lives. But that was 40-50 years ago. Times have changed, and so have the roles of moms.
In the U.S., in 1960s, society began to change. The women’s liberation movement (妇女解放运动) caused women to question their traditional and solid roles. And women began leaving their homes to get jobs or go back to school. Society changed in Asia,
too. Fifty years later, it becomes normal for mothers to work outside the home without the exception (例外). This is true in both America and Asia.
Mothers today serve as presidents, CEOs, university teachers and airline pilots. In fact, they can be found in every profession (职务). But most women will tell you, their most important job is still being a mom.
