The baby is just one day old and has not yet left hospital. She is quiet but alert. Twenty centimeters from her face researchers have placed a white card with two black spots on it. She stares at it carefully. A researcher removes the card and replaces it by another, this time with the spots differently spaced. When slightly older babies were shown cards with pictures of objects (a comb, a key, an orange and so on), changing the number of objects had an effect separate from changing the objects themselves. Could it be the pattern that two things make, as opposed to three? No again. Babies paid more attention to squares moving randomly on a screen when their number changed from two to three, or three to two. The effect even crosses between senses. Babies who were repeatedly shown two spots became more excited when they then heard three drumbeats than when they heard just two; likewise（同样地）when the researchers started with drumbeats and moved to spots.

Human beings have spread to every continent, sometimes driving other animal species to extinction in the process．It has become the most widely spread species on the planet, occupying mountains and valleys, deserts and jungles, shorelines and islands, yet always finding some good means of living in these widely differing environments. The total weight of all living members of the species is far heavier than that of any other animal, and the human population is now growing so rapidly that it will double within the next thirty-five years．
What accounts for the success of our species? The answer, in a word, is culture. We create culture, but culture in turn creates us．We are consequently no longer the victims of the environment．We make our own social environment, inventing and sharing the rules and patterns of behaviour that shape our lives and we use our learned knowledge to make the natural environment more suitable to live in. Our shared culture is what makes social life possible. Without a culture transmitted (传承) from the past, each new generation would have to solve the most basic problems of human existence over again. In the coming three years, our school life will be challenging. First, we should learn to learn efficiently. Personally, I used to try effective methods to achieve my academic goals. Developing a good habit is also of importance. It really benefited me a lot to preview lessons, get actively involved in class, and review what had been taught after class. In addition, we should learn how to get along well with others. In school, I respected teachers and was friendly with classmates.
