A long weekend is a great opportunity to do something a little different. Many people use a long weekend for a getaway, a short trip to leave the stress of their everyday lives behind and explore, learn, or relax.
Hotel Romance
Many hotels and resorts feature something special to start the getaway, such as champagnes (香槟酒), flowers, or a fruit basket in the room on arrival. Getaway packages usually include a room with something special, a heart shaped bed, for example. Additional benefits could be room service meals or other private dining, plus tickets or discounts for local attractions.
Visit a Spa
Spa getaways can take place at a location that focuses only on spa services or at a hotel that offers a spa as one of its features. Some spas emphasize treatments fit for their geographic area or a local attraction. A spa in a grape growing region might provide grape juice masks, or a hotel near a hot spring could offer mineral baths. Most spas offer a range of massage (按摩), health and beauty treatments, so a spa getaway can be relaxing with other benefits.
Learn a Skill
A long weekend may not be enough time to become an expert at something new, but it provides a way for people to begin their explorations. Some organizations offer intensive(集中的)courses that last two or three days. People with special interests can get away from their routines while learning such things as how to make beer, speak a new language, or take better photos.
Help Others
Some organizations cooperate with businesses to have accommodations and activities for short-term volunteers. Most volunteer vacations involve ecology friendly or charity activities. A volunteer getaway is a way to relieve stress and help others at the stone time.
Stay in a National Park
For those who want to relax in a rural environment, a national park fits the bill. Most national parks provide camping areas for tents and trailers. Several have cabins (小屋) within the parks available to rent. A getaway to a national park provides privacy, stress relief, and the time to get to know some important natural resources.

Once, Dr. Mellinkoff invited me to join him at the hospital to discuss interesting cases with his students. The case at hand was a Guatemalan man, aged 34, who had a fever and many other medical problems. His condition was not improving, and there was not much hope that he would live.
Dr. Mellinkoff asked to see the patient. He introduced himself in Spanish and, in a very gentle voice, asked how he felt. The patient smiled and said everything was all right. Then the doctor asked if he was able to eat. The patient said that he had no desire to eat.
“Are you getting food you like?”
The patient said nothing.
“Do you get the kind of food you have at home?”
The answer was no.
The doctor put his hand on the man’s shoulder and his voice was very soft.
“If you had food that you liked, would you eat it?”
“Yes, yes.” the patient said.
The change in the patient’s appearance couldn’t have been more obvious. Nothing
was said, but it was easy to tell that a message had been sent and had also been received. Later, the doctor asked why the Guatemalan man wasn’t getting food he could eat.One of the students said, “We all know how difficult it is to get the kitchen to make special meals.”
“Suppose,” the doctor replied, “you felt a certain medicine was absolutely necessary but that our hospital didn’t carry it, would you accept defeat or would you insist the hospital meet your request?”
“I would probably insist,” the student said.
“Very well," the doctor said. “You might want to try the same method in the kitchen. It won’t be easy, but I can help you. Meanwhile, let’s get some food inside this man as fast as possible, and stay with it. Or he’ll be killed by hunger. By the way, there must be someone among you who can speak Spanish. If we want to make real progress, we need to be able to talk with him.”
Three weeks later, Doctor Mellinkoff told me that the Guatemalan man had left the hospital under his own power. It takes more than medicine to help sick people; you also have to talk to them and make them comfortable.

Agatha Lee described her reaction as “disbelief” when School Board Chairwoman Sue Dickinson called her name last Thursday night at Flagler Auditorium.
Lee, a second-grade teacher at Belle Terre Elementary School, was named Flagler County’s Teacher of the Year today. “I was in such a great group of excellent teachers and I was just shocked.” Lee said in an interview after the announcement.
Every Flagler school names a Teacher of the Year once a year and those nominees(候选人)are considered for the district’s award. That winner, along with winners from the state’s other districts, is then considered for the Florida Teacher of the Year Award, which is announced in July.
To be qualified for the teaching award, teachers must encourage continuous learning, show skillfulness in their subject area, use creative teaching strategies(策略), show leadership and create a caring and respectful environment.
Jill Stirling, a kindergarten teacher, Flagler’s 2010 Teacher of the Year, said she also met winners from throughout the state to share teaching strategies and the best practices. “I often think of those little people that have made me the teacher I am and the person that I am.” Stirling said.
Lee, the following new winner, who is now in her thirteenth year of teaching, came to Flagler County in 2004 after working in Pasco and St. Johns counties. She worked at the former Indian Trails K-8 school and came to Belle Terre Elementary School when it opened in fall 2005.

CHICAGO--- Airplanes are polluters. They're as noisy as a rock concert, and send out poisons into the air as well as dump millions of pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere every year. By 2050, emissions (排放) from planes are expected to become one of the largest contributors to global warming.
That’s why researchers at MIT are designing a completely new type of airplane for NASA that will enable greener airplanes to take flight before 2050.
The 180-passenger D “double bubble” series was designed to replace the Boeing 737 class aircraft, the most popular jetliner in the world right now. The design is called a “double bubble” because it uses two partial cylinders (气缸) placed side by side. Those two cylinders create a wider structure that looks like two soap bubbles joined together.
In today’s commercial airplanes, air flows directly into the engines
located on the plane’s wings. That high-speed air flow drags on the plane, and requires more fuel to overcome the design inefficiency.
MIT’s design changes all that. By moving the engines to the plane’s tail, they take in slower moving air present in the wake of the fuselage (机舱). Less drag means less fuel is needed to get the plane the same distance.
Burning less fuel can help passengers’ wallet as well as the environment. The environmental implications of saving energy are as just as clear: the fewer emissions that planes spout(喷射) into the atmosphere, the healthier our planet.
But for passengers, we still have a couple decades to wait before any of these planes make it onto the runway. NASA’s goal is to make sure the planes that MIT has designed can take off by 2035.
32. The best feature of the double bubble flight is that _____.
A. it will make no noise
B. it will hold more passengers
C. it is designed to save fuel
D. it needs no runways to take off
33. Which of the following is NOT true according to the text?
A. Emission from planes are contributing the most to the global warming
B. Airplanes are very noisy for the environment
C. MIT’s new design will save passengers’ money
D. It's expected that NASA’s goal will be realized by the year 2035.
34. What’s the main idea of the text?
A. Here is Boeing 737's terminal
B. Researchers are designing greener aircraft
C. Passengers will enjoy lower prices
D. Airlines attract passengers with new planes
35. The passage comes from a ____.
A. News report B. Science journal
C. Travel guide D. Environment magazine

Reading Matters
Dear fellow students,
It is reported that the annual average reading amount of per Chinese is only about one-tenth of that some other countries in the world, which causes certain worries among us. How did this come about?
The causes consist of two aspects. Firstly, people’s lack of reading habit explains the main reason, which is the most urgent and difficult thing to change. Secondly,it is obvious that people nowadays care more about material gains than the enrichment of the mind.
It’s high time that we paid due attention to developing good reading habit as it can bring us enormous benefits. For one thing, reading enables us to acquire knowledge and thus broadens our horizons. For another,it provides enough food for thought and improves our practical skills. What’s more, reading enriches our mind and makes it possible for us to lead a meaningful and fulfilling life.
Thanks for your listening!
