Maria Almeida, a Personal Support Worker (PSW), is realizing her lifelong ambition with the help of continuing education. In 1986, when she left Portugal and arrived with her family in Canada, her plan was simple. “I didn’t think about school; I just thought about work, since that’s what you do as a new immigrant（移民）,’’ she says.

However, it didn’t prevent her from enrolling in the English Essentials course, from which she graduated with the third best mark. With that kind of accomplishment, she started classes for the PSW Certificate program in September 2008.
“Since I was used to working very long days, I decided to take some computer courses as well,” she says. “After all, you never know what kind of job is in your future, or what kind of changes technology will lead to.”
She also joined a volunteer program, Storefront Humber, a home-support service company that assists the elderly with meals and daily activities.
“There was always somebody there to motivate me and to be patient with me while I was learning,’’ she says. “To me, you’re never too old to go to school. Education means a lot. If I hadn’t gone to school, I wouldn’t have all of this.’’

Children are losing the ability to play properly because they are being given too many toys and games, according to a new research.
The studies show that children, especially those under five, are often overwhelmed (不知所措) and actually play less than those with fewer toys. It may even harm their development. The studies show that giving children too many toys or toys of the wrong type can actually be doing them harm. They get overwhelmed and cannot concentrate on anything long enough to learn from it.
The conclusions have been backed up by British research looking at children with relatively fewer toys, whose parents spend more time reading, singing or playing with them. It showed such children surpass (胜过) youngsters from richer backgrounds, even those who could use computers.
Some parents notice the ill effect early. Orhan Ismail, a researcher saw a change for the worse in Cameron, his 10-month-old son, after he was given a lot of toys last Christmas.
Ismail said, “If there are too many toys in front of him, he will just keep flitting（掠过） around them and then end up going off and finding something like a slipper to play with. Now we just get out one or two toys and hide the rest in a box.”

Sharks are the world’s most frightening and impressive fish. They are distributed all over the world and are believed to have been in existence before the dinosaurs. In fact, scientists guess that the earliest shark species were swimming in the earth’s waters some 420 million years ago.
The shark species are diverse in terms of their physical appearance, diets and habits. Different shark species prefer different waters, but, generally, sharks are found all over the world.
They live anywhere between relatively shallow depths and about 2,000 meters from the surface. Some can even be found on the ocean floor.
The shark’s body is streamlined (流线型的) to allow these effective hunters to slide through the water smoothly. Sharks that swim around on the ocean floor usually have flat bodies, allowing them to slide across the sand unnoticed. Unlike other fish, which have both bones and cartilage (软骨), sharks only have cartilage, increasing their flexibility and decreasing their weight to allow even faster movement. Their replaceable rows of teeth are used only for catching their prey (猎物) and tearing off large pieces of flesh. They do not chew their food, but swallow it whole.
All sharks are meat eaters. However, their diets are varied. Sharks are believed to be relatively intelligent. They can learn to adopt new patterns of behavior and recognize certain people and objects.
There have been several shark attacks on people, usually resulting in severe injuries or death. The bull shark is the most common killer for bathers, as it swims in the shallow waters in which people usually swim. To avoid attacks by such sharks, it is necessary for bathers to stay within the swimming confines (界限) set by lifeguards and for bathers to exit the water immediately if they have a bleeding injury.

M: Certainly. Let me see --- right, the office assistant job with DP Computer Export. It’s a modern office and there’s good transport. You work from Monday to Friday, from nine o’clock to half past five. And the salary is --- let me see --- yes --- it’s 1,000 pounds a month.
W: OK, but what does an office assistant do? What are the work duties?
M: Well, in this job you answer phones, you do the filing and you do the photocopying. You also write and send e-mails and letters. You don’t have to arrange meetings.
W: What qualifications do I need?
M: Well, you need a school certificate and basic English. So, are you interested in the job?
W: Erm, well, --- the salary isn’t very good. Do you have any other jobs?

W: I’m from Brittany, in France.

W: I finished school in Princeton last year. Then I found a job near Paris. I work for a multinational company. I like the job a lot. I like speaking English with my colleagues and our customers.
M: OK. Christine, what do you do in your spare time?
W: I like reading, listening to music and I like swimming. But I like windsurfing the most.
M: Do you think it’s better to live in a small town or a big city?
W; I live near Paris, but that’s because of my work. I would prefer to live in a smaller town, like my hometown. Maybe because I like the sea.

W: Good afternoon everybody. In this short talk, I’d like to tell you about my favorite store – Harrods, the huge department store in London. The building is beautiful, especially at night, when there are hundreds of lights outside. It’s fascinating. It’s open every day of the week, including Sundays. There’re seven floors, I think. Yes, I’m sure there’re seven floors. You can find everything in Harrods: clothes, watches, books and DVDs, children’s toys, things for your home and sports equipment. You can even buy a famous green Harrods shopping bag. And Harrods can order anything you want! You can buy anything you can imagine in Harrods. It’s famous for its fantastic food halls, and there’re about 25 cafes and restaurants. The most interesting thing is that there’s even a doctor in the store as well as a bank. To finish, I think Harrods is the best department store in the world. That’s all. I hope you enjoy my little talk and it can help you get familiar with Harrods in some way. Thank you.
