They are surrounded by the sea, so it is not surprising that the sea has always played an important role in their lives. After the development of large, ocean- going sailing ships in the fifteenth century, the sea became even more important to the country's development. Ships setting sail from England determined to extend Britain's territories, its wealth and its knowledge of the ‎ world.Ships returned to England bringing goods, people and new ideas from foreign places. By the nineteenth century, Britain had the largest, most powerful navy in the world.‎ The great sailing ships were so much a part of British life that they even affected the language. Many English expressions we use today were originally nautical(航海的)terms, although most people no longer realize this. For example, people commonly describe an honest and fair business deal as being"above board".This expression was originally used in sailing ship times when secretive, dishonest ship's business would becarried out below decks( i. e. below the boards)out of public view. On the other hand, honest business was always conducted on deck (above the boards), in the open where everyone could see what was going on.‎ ‎"Pipe down!", meaning "Be quiet!",is another common expression that has nautical origins. The ship's boatswain(水手长) would blow a whistle,or pipe, at the end of the day to indicate(表明) to the sailors it was time to quieten down and go to sleep.‎ Most native English speakers have heard the expression "not enough room to swing a cat," but few know that the“cat”does not refer to a small furry animal with four legs and a tail. The"cat"is actually a short form of"cat of nine tails"...a whip with nine, knotted(打结的) tails. A boatswain needed a lot of space in order to swing the whip properly when lashing(鞭打) a poor sailor under his control!‎ ‎21. The British have been strongly influenced by thesea because A. they live on an island surrounded by the sea B. they occupied more land around the world C. they got more wealth from the sea D. they had the largest navy ever ‎22. If someone is open and above board, it means he is A, secretive B.cheerful C. honest D. dishonest ‎23.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?‎ A. Sailors will be whipped if they do business below decks.‎ B. Sailors need to go to sleep when they hear a whistle.‎ C. A poor sailor may be whipped nine times a day.‎ D. Also known as saline-alkali tolerant rice(耐盐碱水稻), seawater rice is designed to grow in tidal flats or other areas with heavy salt content and has been developed by plant-breeding experts through crossbreeding(杂交育种) and other technologies.‎ One type of seawater rice growing in Qingdao's Chengyang district, Shandong province, yielded 3.9 metric tons per hectare, experts announced. Once widely planted on a large scale, the yield could be much higher.‎ The Qingdao Saline-Alkali Tolerant Rice Research and Development‎ ‎Center, led by famous Chinese agricultural scientist Yuan Longping, was established three years ago. It set itself a three-year target of developing a kind of salt-resistant rice strain capable of yielding 4.5 tons a hectare, which would guarantee growers the minimum acceptable level of profit. The average rice yield in China is 6.75 tons a hectare.‎ Planting in the experimental field in Chengyang district and five other plots of ‎ saline-alkali land started at the end of May. The five other plots were in Dongying, Shandong province; Wenzhou, Zhejiang province; Yan'an, Shaanxi province; Kashgar, in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region; and Daqing, Heilongjiang province. The sites represent actually every type of saline-alkali land in China and researchers aim to cultivate different strains able to cope with different climate, salinity and soil structure conditions.‎ The test crops in Kashgar and Daqing were also harvested on Wednesday. In Kashgar, the yield reached more than 7.5 tons per hectare, according to experts' tests, much higher than expected. The harvest in Kashgar was satisfactory. The result means it is possible to plant such salt-resistant rice in southern Xinjiang in the future. Xinjiang has about 2 million hectares of saline-alkali land that have the potential to be planted with salt-resistant rice, and if it is widely planted, it will substantially improve rice production in the region.‎ The seawater rice strain grown in Daqing only yielded 3.1 tons per hectare. A live video clip on Shandong TV showed growers appearing a little disappointed by the result, as they hoped the experts' efforts would boost production. The water and soil conditions at the site were not ideal, and the pH level was extremely high.‎ ‎28. Which is the main feature of seawater rice according to the text?‎ A.
