(2018·江西赣中南五校联考)In its early history,Chicago had floods frequently, especially in the spring, making the streets so muddy that people, horses and carts got stuck. An old joke that was popular at the time went like this:A man is stuck up to his waist in a muddy Chicago street.Asked if he needs help,he replies,“No,thanks.I’ve got a good horse under me.”
The city planner decided to build an underground drainage(排水) system, but there simply wasn’t enough difference between the height of the ground level and the water level. The only two options were to lower the Chicago River or raise the city.
An engineer named Ellis Chesbrough convinced the city that it had no choice but to build the pipes above ground and then cover them with dirt. This raised the level of the city’s streets by as much as 12 feet.
This of course created a new problem:dirt practically buried the first floors of every building in Chicago.Building owners were faced with a choice:either change the first floors of their buildings into basements, and the second stories into mainfloors,or hoist(吊起) the entire buildings to meet the new street level.Small woodframe buildings could be lifted fairly easily. But what about large, heavy structures like the Tremont Hotel, which was a sixstory brick building?
That’s where George Pullman came in.He had developed some housemoving skills successfully. To lift a big structure like the Tremont Hotel,Pullman would place thousands of jackscrews(螺旋千斤顶) beneath the building’s foundation. One man was assigned to operate each section of roughly 10 jackscrews. At Pullman’s sign each man turned his jackscrews by the same amount at the same time, thereby raising the building slowly and evenly.Astonishingly, the Tremont Hotel stayed open during the entire operation, and many of its guests didn’t even notice anything was happening. Some people like to say that every problem has a solution. But in Chicago’s early history, every engineering solution seemed to create a new problem. Now that Chicago’s waste water was draining efficiently into the Chicago River, the city’s next step was to clean the polluted river.

(2018·银川检测)Crossing your legs is an extremely common habit; most people don’t even notice that they’re doing it when they sit down. While you may find it comfortable to sit with one knee crossed over the other, it might be causing health problems that you are not aware of.
A study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring stated that sitting with your legs crossed can increase your blood pressure. The reason for this is that the blood in your legs has to work against gravity to be pumped back to your heart and that crossing one leg over the other increases resistance, making it even harder for the blood to circulate. This causes your body to increase your blood pressure to push the blood back to the heart. You won’t feel any immediate effects, but repeated, drawnout increases in blood pressure can cause longterm health issues. So, planning to sit for a long period of time? Don’t keep your legs crossed.
“Crossing your legs at the knee can also cause pressure on the major nerve in your leg that passes just below your knee and along the outside of your leg,” explains Richard Graves, a medical expert. This pressure can cause numbness and temporary paralysis(麻痹) of some of the muscles in your foot and leg, preventing you from being able to raise your ankle—what we know as that “pins__and__needles” sensation. While the feeling of discomfort may only last a minute or two, repeatedly crossing your legs until they feel numb can cause permanent nerve damage.
So next time you sit down, try to get yourself in the habit of sitting with both of your feet on the floor. Not only will it help your posture and stability, but it will also save your health in the long run.

(2018·黄岗检测) On Christmas Day, 2003, a woman named Nancy Sue Brown took her daughter and grandchildren to see a movie at an AMC theater. When the movie was over, the crowd made for the exits. A theater employee had just finished mopping the hallway and dutifully placed the “wet floor” sign in the slippery area. No one slipped due to the wet conditions, but someone did manage to knock over the sign. And by the time Ms. Brown got to the area, the sign was lying on the floor. And shortly thereafter, so was she. Her foot got caught in the sign, in a bad way, and she fell. Unfortunately Ms. Brown had undergone a back operation, and the fall caused more damage than it otherwise would have. So she and her husband sued
AMC argued that the entire point of the “wet floor” sign above was to warn of danger, and therefore, courts should encourage the use by not allowing Brown’s case to proceed AMC referred to a case about a December, 1998 incident, where a “wet floor” sign, not in use, fell to the floor causing another trip-and-fall. In that case, Georgia’s Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the store, but didn’t go so far as to say that “wet floor” signs couldn’t give rise to legal liability(责任) in trip-and-fall accidents. In the Brown case, the Supreme Court therefore rejected AMC’s argument that the former case applied.
But the Browns argued something surprising that the “wet floor” sign was, itself, dangerous, because “using this type of sign in areas passed by lots of customers creates an unreasonable risk of foreseeable harm to the public in the form of tripping hazards(危险).” That’s right—the safety sign, used in the way it was designed, was itself dangerous. The court thankfully didn’t

accept that argument, at least not entirely. But it did conclude that Brown’s case could continue to a jury(陪审团)—“a merchant’s selection and use of equipment designed to warn customers of one danger that has the potential to expose them to a different one”.
12.According to the text, Ms. Brown________.
A.slipped on the wet floor
B.tripped over a warning sign
C.knocked over a warning sign
D.was knocked down by the crowd

A.accept its legal liability for Ms. Brown’s loss
B.prove Ms. Brown had some physical problems
C.stress that it had no legal liability for the accident
D.prove other customers were responsible for the accident
AMC argued that...encourage the use by not allowing Brown’s case to proceed(继续进行).
14.What can we learn about the Brown’s case from the last paragraph?
A.It would be judged by jury.
B.It would not be allowed to proceed.
C.The court would rule in favor of AMC.
D.The court accepted all the arguments of the Browns.
But it did conclude that Brown’s case could continue to a jury(陪审团) ... 故选A项。
15.The underlined word “one” in the last paragraph refers to “________”.
A.danger
B.customer
C.business owner
D.equipment in public places
故选A项。

have nothing/something to do with...“和……
2.learned/learnt

the majority of 是固定搭配,意为“……
分析句子结构可知,__________ as gifts 作状语,根据固定搭配 be regarded as “被视为……”
7.celebration(s) 解析:考查名词。

We’d like you to recommend a hotel to us near the subway in order to get around New York more easily. And the hotel with a private kitchen is better because we want to cook meals by ourselves. In addition, please recommend a reasonable tour route so that we can save a lot of time. I know you have been to many places of interest in New York. More importantly, I wonder whether you can pick us up at the airport because we aren’t familiar with New York. We’d appreciate it very much if you could help us.
