Before I came to Italy, I had different ideas about Italian culture. People seem to be very friendly. However, after staying here for a year, I find that’s not always the case. Men and women will get quite different traveling experiences in Italy.
If you are a woman traveler, don’t be surprised if you get a lot of attention. When you walk alone in the street, you may meet a guy who will help you with your luggage (行李) and sometimes even offer you a ride. However, there is a small chance this thing happens to men.
And if another man is around women, things are even worse. One day, two female friends and I took a taxi in Rome. When these two young ladies got into the taxi, the driver was very happy. He didn’t even notice I opened the side door in the front. But when he finally saw me, the driver was silent. He didn’t even turn on the taximeter (计程表) and wanted to overcharge me.
It seems like Italian men feel they must make women, whatever their age or how they look, feel confident. Some men love to fight for a woman’s attention.
One reason could be that most Italians live in small communities. And mothers are the head of the home. For an Italian man, his mother is the No 1 woman in his world. The environment is likely another reason for Italian men’s passion (热情) and romance (浪漫). There is sunshine everywhere. Couples walk down quiet streets on nights. No wonder romance comes to life here.
51. From the first two paragraphs, we learn that _____.
A. women are treated well by men in Italy. B. Italian men and women enjoy different rights
C. women are looked down on in Italy D. Italian men don’t like travelers to their country
52. Why did the driver become silent?
A. He didn’t like to drive with too many passengers. B. He hated that the writer didn’t ask him first.
C. The writer had a fight with him before. D. He didn’t know there was a man passenger.
53. What does the underlined word “overcharge” mean?
A. ask sb. to get off the car B. ask for too much money
C. give sb. a free ride D. ask for less money
54. From the last paragraph, we learn the following EXCEPT _____.
A. most Italians live in small communities B. mothers are the head of the home in Italy
C. Italian men don’t like to listen to fathers D. the environment influences Italian men’s romance

Besides the spelling of the word, there are, clearly, many differences between American and British humor.
There is a common belief in the U.K. that Americans don’t understand irony (讽刺). This is of course not true. But what is true is that Americans don’t use it all the time. Irony may show up in American comedies, but people there don’t use it as much as the British do in daily life. However, irony is common in British culture. It actually runs in the blood of the British people. They use it as a way of playing with their friends and laughing at their enemies, as well as themselves, in everyday conversations. This may sometimes make people unhappy if the listeners

are not used to it.
Things are quite different in America. After Americans use irony, they will clearly say that they are “only kidding”. They feel the need to make a joke clearer so that it will not make other people uncomfortable. Humor is tied so much to culture. American jokes are more clear and forward, a bit like Americans return. British jokes, on the other hand, are more subtle and usually with a hidden meaning. This may result from the fact that British culture is more reserved(矜持的) than American culture. However, we still find that certain American comedies have made huge success in Britain and vice versa(反之亦然).
Therefore, although there are differences between both comic styles, there is still an appreciation(欣赏) and understanding of the other’s sense of humor.

A. They’ll make another joke. B. They will say they are just kidding.
C. They won’t make their kids laugh. D. They won’t show they are uncomfortable.

With more and more cars on the road, traffic jams are inevitable. Traffic jams can lead to increased accidents as there are more cars, with more people trying to get to their destination, all the while getting worse. Although it’s impossible to avoid traffic jams altogether, there are some tips you can follow to reduce the amount of time on the road.
Check for traffic jams before you leave. You can listen to the radio for traffic news, or check on the Internet to get up-to-minute information on traffic. If the route you want to take is heavy with traffic, you can choose another.
Look for a different route all the time. Most traffic jams happen on busy roads. Using country roads could see you avoiding a lot of traffic. Although the distance you may have to travel is further, it can work out quicker.
Set your car radio to receive traffic bulletins. Many new car stereo systems (汽车音响系 统) are equipped with a radio system by which you can hear the traffic channel. This way you can get the latest traffic information and change your journey if necessary.
__________ Most traffic jams usually occur during rush hour, so try to avoid this time period if possible. Some jobs offer flexible working hours so that you can travel to work outside of rush hour. Some jobs even allow you to work at home so as to avoid moving altogether. Ask your
