The idea was to reunite Europe after the Second World War.‎ At the same time, the “Fringe” appeared as a challenge to the official festival. Eight theatre groups turned up uninvited in 1947, in the belief that everyone should have the right to perform, and they did so in a public house disused for years.‎ Soon, groups of students firstly from Edinburgh University, and later from the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, Durham and Birmingham were making the journey to the Scottish capital each summer to perform theater by little-known writers of plays in small church halls to the people of Edinburgh.‎ Today the “Fringe”, once less recognized, has far outgrown the festival with around 1,500 performances of theatre, music and dance on every one of the 21 days it lasts. And yet as early as 1959, with only 19 theatre groups performing, some said it was getting too big.‎ A paid administrator was first employed only in 1971, and today there are eight administrators working all year round and the number rises to 150 during August itself. In 2004 there were 200 places housing 1,695 shows by over 600 different groups from 50 different countries. More than 1.25 million tickets were sold.‎ 4. What was the purpose of Edinburgh Festival at the beginning?‎ A. To bring Europe together again. B. To honor heroes of World War II.‎ C. To introduce young theatre groups. D. To attract great artists from Europe.‎ 5. Why did some uninvited theater groups come to Edinburgh in 1947?‎ A. They owned a public house there. B. They came to take up a challenge.‎ C. They thought they were also famous. D. They wanted to take part in the festival.‎ 6. Who joined the “Fringe” after it appeared?‎ A. Popular writers. B. University students.‎ C. Artists from around the world. D. Performers of music and dance.‎ 1. We may learn from the text that Edinburgh Festival __________.‎ A. has become a non-official event B. has gone beyond an art festival C. gives shows all year round D. keeps growing rapidly C Since my retirement(退休)from teaching music in 2001, I have spent a good deal of time painting as an artist. I actually began drawing again in the summer of 1995 when my father died, so perhaps I was trying to recover from the loss of my father, or maybe it was just that it brought back memories of him. In any case, I drew pen and ink animals and landscape much influenced by Krenkel and St. John for five years.‎ ‎ For some strange reason, I had been waiting until my retirement to start doing watercolors again, but as soon as I walked out of the school door for the last time, I picked up my brushes and rediscovered Andrew Wyeth, who quickly became my favorite artist. I had looked through all the art books I had on my shelves and found his watercolors to be the closest to how I thought good watercolors should look. So I painted landscapes around Minnesota for three years and tried out many other types of painting. However, watercolors remained my first choice, and I think I did my best work there, showing my paintings at a number of art exhibitions.‎ ‎ Art is now together with my piano playing and reading. There is a time for everything in my world, and it is wonderful to have some time doing what I want to do. As Confucius once said, “At seventy I can follow my heart’s desire.”‎ 2. What is the text mainly about?‎ A. Learning to paint in my life. B. How to paint watercolors.‎ C. An artist-turned teacher. D. Life after retirement.‎ 3. The author started drawing again in 1995 because .‎ A. he hoped to draw a picture of his father B. he couldn’t stop missing his father C. he had more time after retirement D. he liked animals and landscapes 4. We can infer from the text that the author .‎ A. had been taught by Krenkel and St. John B. painted landscapes in Minnesota for 5 years C. believed Wyeth to be the best in watercolors D. started his retirement life at the age of seventy 5. How does the author probably feel about his life as an artist?‎ A. Very enjoyable. B. A bit regretful. C. Rather busy. D. Fairly dull.‎ D ‎ One evening in February 2007, a student named Paula Ceely brought her car to a stop on a remote road in Wales. She got out to open a metal gate that blocked her path. That’s when she heard the whistle sounded by the driver of a train. Her Renault Clio was parked across a railway line. Seconds later, she watched the train drag her car almost a kilometre down the railway tracks. ‎ ‎ Ceely’s near miss made the news because she blamed it on her GPS device (导航仪). She had never driven the route before. It was dark and raining heavily. Ceely was relying on her GPS, but it made no mention of the crossing. “I put my complete trust in the device and it led me right into the path of a speeding train,” she told the BBC.‎ ‎ Who is to blame here? Rick Stevenson, who tells Ceely’s story in his book When Machines Fail Us, points the finger at the limitations of technology. We put our faith in digital devices, he says, but our digital helpers are too often not up to the job. They are filled with small problems. And it’s not just GPS devices: Stevenson takes us on a tour of digital disasters involving everything from mobile phones to wireless keyboards.‎ ‎ The problem with his argument in the book is that it’s not clear why he only focuses on digital technology, while there may be a number of other possible causes. A mapmaker might have left the crossing off a paper map. Maybe we should blame Ceely for not paying attention. Perhaps the railway authorities are at fault for poor signaling system. Or maybe someone has studied the relative dangers and worked out that there really is something specific wrong with the GPS equipment. But Stevenson doesn’t say.‎ ‎ It’s a problem that runs through the book. In a section on cars, Stevenson gives an account of the advanced techniques that criminals use to defeat computer based locking systems for cars. He offers two independent sets of figures on car theft; both show a small rise in some parts of the country. He says that once again not all new locks have proved reliable. Perhaps, but maybe it’s also due to the shortage of policemen on the streets. Or changing social circumstances. Or some combination of these factors.‎ ‎ The game between humans and their smart devices is amusing and complex. It is shaped by economics and psychology and the cultures we live in. Somewhere in the mix of those forces there may be a way for a wiser use of technology.‎ ‎ If there is such a way, it should involve more than just an awareness of the shortcomings of our machines. After all, we have lived with them for thousands of years. They have probably been fooling us for just as long.‎ 1. What did Paula Ceely think was the cause of her accident?‎ A. She was not familiar with the road. ‎ B. It was dark and raining heavily then.‎ C. The railway workers failed to give the signal.‎ D. Her GPS device didn’t tell her about the crossing.‎ 1. The phrase “near miss” (Paragraph 2) can best be replaced by______.‎ A. close hit  B. heavy loss C. narrow escape D. big mistake 2. Which of the following would Rick Stevenson most probably agree with?‎ A. Modern technology is what we can’t live without.‎ B. Digital technology often falls short of our expectation. ‎ C. Digital devices are more reliable than they used to be.‎ D. GPS error is not the only cause for Ceely’s accident.‎ 3. In the writer’s opinion, Stevenson’s argument is ______.‎ A. one-sided B. reasonable C. puzzling D. well-based 第二节 ( 共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ If you are already making the time to exercise, it is good indeed! It’s a Chinese painting “bamboo”, which Ispecially drew for you.‎ In Chinese culture, bamboo carries many best wishes and excellent qualities. On one hand, it stands straight and stays green all year round, so it’s always full of life. I wish you as strong and energetic as a bamboo. On the other hand, it’s hard outside but hollow inside. If compared to a bamboo, one is usually considered to be strong-willed and modest. All in all, we use bamboo to represent a noble and gentle person.‎ I hope you like the gift and with you a happy birthday.‎ Best regards,‎ Li Hua
