That cold January night, I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was, walking home at one in the morning after a tiring practice at the theatre. With opening night only a week ago, I was still learning my lines. I was having trouble dealing with my part-time job at the bank and my acting at night at the same time. As I walked, I thought seriously about giving up both acting and
San Francisco. City life had become too much for me.
As I walked down empty streets under tall buildings, I felt very small and cold. I began running, both to keep warm and to keep away from any possible robbers. Very few people were still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets.
About a block from my apartment, I heard a sound behind me. I turned quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty. All I saw was a shining streetlight. Still, the noise had made me nervous, so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment building and unlocked the door did I realize what the noise had been. It had been my wallet falling to the sidewalk.
Suddenly I wasn't cold or tired anymore. I ran out of the door and back to where I'd heard the noise. Although I searched the sidewalk anxiously for fifteen minutes, my wallet was nowhere to be found.
Just as I was about to give up the search, I heard the garbage truck pulling up to the sidewalk next to me. When a voice called from the inside, "Alisa Camacho?" I thought I was dreaming. How could this man know my name? The door opened, and out jumped a small red-haired man with an amused look in his eyes. "Is this what you're looking for?" he asked, holding up a small square shape.
It was nearly 3 a.m. by the time I got into bed. I wouldn't get much sleep that night, but I had gotten my wallet back. I also had gotten back some enjoyment of city life. I realized that the city couldn't be a bad place as long as people were willing to help each other.
24. How did the writer feel when she was walking home after work?

A. lost her wallet unknowingly
B. was stopped by a garbage truck driver

A. Someone offered to take her back home.
B. A red-haired man came to see her.

27. From the text, we can infer that the writer___________.

Truly successful people never make any excuses. Rather, they own their choices and take full responsibility for the results they create, what they do and what they don't do. If you really want to do something, just do it. You have to stop lying to yourself about why you haven't done it already. If you want to do something badly enough, you'll find a way. If you don't, you'll find an excuse. It's as simple as that.
More often than not, our excuses are just lies wrapped up as reasons to avoid the real work of living our best lives. Yet you and I both know that you are better than that, and you are selling yourself short when you make excuses.
When I started writing my first book, I had no idea how to write a book (much less how to get one published) and had never taken a writing class. I also had four children under the age of 7 and no babysitter. But I decided to give myself permission to write an imperfect book. So each afternoon when I could get my kids down for a nap or in front of the TV for an hour, I'd start writing. Four years later, Find Your Courage found its way onto store shelves. It is now published in five languages.
Of course, back then, most people would have accepted any excuse I made for not pursuing the dream at my heart to pen a book. Likewise, you will always find well-meaning people to back up your excuses, even the lousy(讨厌的) ones. But they won't be the pioneers, change-makers or go-getters. No, the people who'll back your excuses will be the ones who have well-worn excuses themselves to explain their own sad fate in life.
28. According to the passage, truly successful people__________.
A. only make excuses for what they have already done
B. always com plain about the difficulties they experience
C. treasure what they have and hope for what they do
D. never make excuses but face the reality responsibly
29. Which couldn't have served as the writer's excuse to give up her dream?
A. I didn't know how to write a book.
B. I had never taken a writing class.
C. I never permitted myself to fail.
D. I had to take care of my children.
30. What's the writer's attitude to those who support her excuses?
A. They are annoying. B. They are successful.
C. They are losers in life D. They are well-meaning.
31. What's the best title for the passage?
A. Take your responsibility B. Never make excuses
C. Hold on to your dream D. Never back up others' excuses
D
The human body has about 25.000 genes. Researchers already know that up to 65 genes would carry a risk of autism(自闭症). NOW researchers at Princeton University in New Jersey have identified
2,500 more that could help create the conditions for autism. The discovery is important because the genes could lead scientists toward finding a cause and possibly a treatment.
Arjun Krishnan is a researcher at Princeton's Lewis-Sigler Institute for Integrative Genomics. He said researchers used what they called a machine-learning computer program to identify autism-related
genes. Krishnan explained that the program identified similarities between brain-related genes and the 65 autism-risk genes. Then, the program looked for other genes that were “friends” of both sets. He said the process was like finding friends on Facebook.
“And if Facebook wants to suggest a friend for you, what it would do is to find out who your friends are and then find out other people who are friends with those same people. And if they are, they are very likely friends of you, too. So that is how they give you suggestions of new friends you might know. We used a very, very similar strategy.”
The strategy permits researchers to find patterns within the brain's huge circuitry(电路系统). It
shows that having genes that are “friends” of both brain-related and autism-related genes can increase a person's risk of autism. The findings can also help researchers understand why one person may be only mildly affected with autism, while another is severely affected. In other words, autism researchers need to consider not only individual genes, but also gene combinations.
Researchers still have not found a way to diagnose autism, beyond just observing the children, but they hope this new research into gene patterns will lead to a way to treat very young children. Then they can be helped as soon as possible.
32. What positive influence does the identified genes have on scientists?
A. Improving their working conditions.
B. Creating more chances to their goals.
C. Knowing autism’s features and effects.
D. Finding autism’s cause and treatment.
33. What do we know about the friendly gene in Paragraph 2?
A. It is just a medium.
B. It is just a computer program.
C. It can be friendly to any gene.
D. It can find the similarities between genes.
34. What does the underlined word “patterns” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Autism's features. B. Autism's causes.
C. Gene connections. D. Gene types.
35. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Genes therapy in autism
B. The ways to cure autism
C. The discovery of autism-related genes
D. Similarities and differences between genes

WeChat is becoming popularly with people. I had already made a survey among my classmates
about the use of WeChat. According to a result, 45% of the classmates admit they often use it
because comparing with other means of communication, WeChat has more advantages. It's cheap,
convenient and easy to send all kinds of message around. However, 35% of them is against using
it, saying it will affect their study. Ever using WeChat, the rest of the students have no opinion

Dear sir or madam,
Knowing from the Internet that some part-time waiters are needed to work in your restaurant during the coming winter vacation, I'm writing to apply for the job. First, having
been learning English for ten years, I have a good command of English, especially spoken English. Besides, I'm energetic and easy-going, which makes it possible for me to serve well at work. Most importantly, I have done part-time jobs many times during holidays so I have enough experience. Hope my application can be considered. I'm looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

W: Hey, listen, I can hear a motorbike. I think that is Uncle Tom.
M: I spoke to him this afternoon and he is going to take a taxi after his meeting. And Anna just called and said she was driving here.
(Text 2)
W: What a beautiful painting this is! You just love art museums, don’t you?
M: I do. It’s a nice place to go on a Saturday afternoon. They even have a large outdoor garden in the back. This is such a peaceful place.
(Text 3)
W: Will you help me clean the house before our dinner party tonight? We need to sweep the floor before we start cooking.
M: I’d be happy to help. Why don’t I take out the rubbish first? I saw that bag was full.
(Text 4)
M: Ella, look at my new computer! I bought it a while ago. My old one is hard to use.
W: Oh, it looks cool. It must be quite expensive.
M: Not really, considering how much it can do.
(Text 5)
W: What’s in your hand, Bob?
M: It’s a German textbook. I’m learning German now.
W: But aren’t you also learning French? Don’t tell me you’re learning them at the same time.
M: Well, that’s exactly what I’m doing now.
(Text 6)
M: Your garden looks great.
W: Thanks. The weather has been good this year.
M: What are you growing?
W: Some flowers, but mostly vegetables. I have planted carrots, lettuce, beans, tomatoes, potatoes, and peppers. And I also have two apple trees.
M: Those sound good. You can make fresh salads all summer.
W: That’s the plan. I love making fresh salads.
M: Do you have a lot of trouble with ants or mosquitoes?
W: They aren’t too bad, but there are a lot of spiders.

M: Yes, Madam. What would you like?
W: We’d like to start with fruit juice, apple for me and orange for my daughter.
M: Right, Madam. Do you want any tea or milk?
W: No, thank you. Just some lemon tea for my husband and some hot milk for my children.
M: OK. And what time do you want it brought to your room?
W: About 8:00 am. Oh, wait, please bring it half an hour earlier. We may leave early to go sightseeing in the city.
M: OK.
(Text 8)

M: Sure.
W: What I’d like to do for my survey project is to interview three people. Would that be OK? Because in class, you said a survey is usually done with a large number of people.
M: That’s right, it is. But tell me about your idea.
W: My idea is to interview three people in my host family. There’s a grandmother who has a lot of opinions about life. I want to compare what she says with what the mother and the daughter say. Would that be all right?
M: It’s a start. Why don’t you prepare a list of questions — maybe five or six, but no more than ten — for your interviews? When you’ve done that, show me the list and we’ll go from there.
W: All right. I’ll work on it tonight. Thanks for the advice.

W: Sure. I use a website called Kayak.com that compares the prices of many different airlines. They also have a cool quality where you can look at flights a few days before and a few days after your scheduled dates to find the best price.
M: Oh, that quality is very useful. But this is for my aunt and uncle, and their dates are fixed. They’re coming out here for my sister’s wedding, but they have to fly out the day before and leave the day after.
W: I see. Where are they coming from?
M: New York City.
W: Oh, it’s not a very long flight. Do you think they care more about price or convenience?
M: They definitely want a nonstop flight. They had a bad experience changing planes in Philadelphia once, so they only fly nonstop now.
W: Got it. So, two adults, flying nonstop from New York to Chicago, leaving May 28th and returning May 30th ...

You might be excited or scared, but either way, the first winter storm of the season is coming. It will be moving across the country beginning on Wednesday night. The first area that will be affected will be the dry fields of North and South Dakota, as well as eastern Minnesota. Thursday will be very bad in these areas. By Friday, the storm will have moved toward the East Coast, and it will continue to bring snow as it heads up into Canada and The Great Lakes area. Eastern Ohio and Pennsylvania should be seeing snow start to fall early Saturday, continuing through Sunday as the storm moves into New York and dies out. The snowfall totals will be four to eight inches in most places, but New York will see a foot of snow in the mountains. The big thing to watch out for with this storm is the high winds. They can make the snowfall very dangerous because it’s much harder for drivers and pilots to see in front of them. So, if you live in those areas, make sure you’re prepared to stay home.
