On the day the tornado hit, there was no indication that severe weather was on its way—the sky was blue and the sun had been out. The first alert my husband, Jimmy, 67, and I, 65, got came around 9 p.m., from some scrolling text on the TV Jimmy was watching. He ran upstairs to find me in our third-floor bedroom, and we changed the channel from the presidential primary debate I had been watching to our local Pensacola, Florida, station.
No sooner had we found coverage of the tornado than it was on top of us. It was the loudest thing I have ever heard. The bones of the house shook, and the power went out. The wind began to roar through the house, most likely through blown-out windows and the door to our garage. We had three flights of steps to navigate to get to the relative safety of the first floor, because the cupboard down there is underneath a brick staircase.
I didn’t know how or if we would make it down the steps. It felt as if there were no floor underneath me as the wind lifted me off my feet. I tried to move forward, but this intense pressure held me in place.
As we reached the last flight of steps, our front door blew out. Pieces of glass that looked like crushed ice flew everywhere. Suddenly, a three-foot-long tree branch crashed into the door frame. It flew over our heads, missing us by inches. Had we been one step up, it would have hit us.
By the time I reached the cupboard, the tornado had been over us for about a minute. Jimmy pushed me down to the cupboard floor, but he couldn’t get inside himself because of the wind. I held Jimmy’s arm and tried to bring Jimmy with it. My knees were full of glass, but at that moment, I felt no pain. If I had let go, Jimmy would have flown right out the back of the house and into the bay.
All of a sudden, Jimmy lifted off his feet like people in tornadoes do in the movies. I thought he was gone. And then everything stopped. He landed on his feet. In those first quiet moments, I couldn’t believe it was over. Jimmy said he’d go outside to check. “No,” I said. “Don’t leave me. Don’t leave me.”
Our neighbor says the storm lasted four minutes. In that time, four of the twelve
town houses in our unit were completely destroyed. Of the houses left standing, ours suffered the most damage. Amazingly, none of us were severely injured.
25. What does the underlined word coverage mean?
A. power B. description C. arrival D. delay
26. Which of the following sentences is NOT true about the passage?
A. There was not any symbol of the tornado’s coming.
B. A three-foot-long tree branch hit the couple.
C. Both of the couple couldn’t get into the cupboard floor.
D. Jimmy didn’t fly right out the back of the house.
27. Why didn’t the wife feel pain?
A. Because she didn’t get any hurt when the storm hit.
B. Because she was too scared to feel pain.
C. Because she devoted all her strength to holding on to her husband.
D. Because she had reached the cupboard and she was safe.
28. The author wrote the passage to _______.
A. share with us her experience of surviving a tornado
B. warn us of the danger caused by tornados
C. show us how to fight against a tornado
D. tell us how to protect us from dangerous tornados
C
A culture’s values can be mirrored by its humor. Humor has been evaluated by many great minds such as Thomas Hobbes, who, in “On Nature”, disliked humor, “Laughter is nothing else but sudden glory arising from sudden thought of feeling far better than others.” He thought humor to be a negative quality of human narrow-mindedness.
However, Mordechai Gordon, PhD of Education, insists, “Humor allows us to view the world from an angle that is amusing rather than serious.” I agree with Gordon. Learning to look at the world through humor is important.
In the United States, every four years an election occurs. Without humor as
a way to express their feelings, how would Americans be willing to support the election? Television shows like “The Daily Show” have become important parts of American culture. They are mothering the masses by unconsciously inputting politics into mouths. They make politics fun.
Of course, politics is only one type of humor. Social humor helps people through the twists and turns of the human condition. American pop culture promotes an unhealthy self image. On the topic of self-image, Hari Kondabolu stands out. He has a joke about the popular musical group “The Pussycat Dolls”, describing their hit song “Don’t Cha” as a negative representation of women. He points out an obvious offence in American culture.
A study from Loyola University of Maryland has shown that humor is one determining factor for selecting a mating partner. Amongst other things, mates look for an outstanding funny bone in a potential partner.
Of course, humor is not always used for good purposes. Humor can be linked to vulgarity (粗俗) and racism, but, like everything else, it has potential to unite human beings by allowing us to laugh at ourselves, our failures and our connection with one another.
Though 1ife may seem tough and depressing at times, all I have to do is look in the mirror at my increased wrinkles to know that there is a comedy out there that even Chaplin wasn’t aware of.
With that in mind, remember to laugh with humanity and sometimes at humanity.
29. Hobbes believes that humor_______.
A. resulted in narrow-mindedness of human beings
B. was only a way to laugh at others to make oneself feel better
C. had the power to mirror personal glory and national values
D. was for people to view the world from another angle
30. What is the author’s attitude towards political humor?
A. Appreciative B. Disappointed C. Curious D. Worried
31. The fourth paragraph is developed mainly _______.
A. by process B. by example C. by comparison D. by classification
32. What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?
A. Chaplin wasn’t aware of being laughed at.
B. The author feels helpless and sad about getting older.
C. Never be the one who laughs at other people.
D. The author is determined to face life with a sense of humor.
D
Over the last week, a “poisonous kale (甘蓝菜)” theory has been going widespread after an article warned that the vegetable was associated with a variety of medical conditions. It’s time to separate fear from fact on the health benefits of kale.
As a member of the cabbage family, kale is low in calories and rich in nutrients and minerals, especially vitamin A, C and K. Consumed for thousands of years, it’s been a health plus for millions of eaters throughout the world.
However, numerous web articles have reported on some evidence offered by a medicine researcher. The researcher found that thallium (铊) was detected in a few people who were heavy consumers of kale. Thallium is a heavy metal often found in trace amounts (微量) in soil and minerals. His conclusion was that these medical conditions were connected to the impact that trace amounts of thallium detected in some kale samples had on the body.
I don’t think the conclusion is based on a strict scientific basis. It’s essential to point out that the original report was in a web magazine, not a scientific journal which is subject to peer review by other scientists. A scientific review includes a careful evaluation of how the findings and conclusions were made. Certain factors are critical before an evidence-based conclusion can be made, such as: how many people were in a study; how well controlled were other factors; how much kale was consumed and for how long; how much thallium was in the kale.
It is a fact that kale and other vegetables can absorb thallium from the soil. But the ability for a plant to absorb traces of a chemical does not automatically
make it harmful to your health. And even finding measurable amounts of thallium in someone’s body doesn’t imply that the thallium is causing an ill health effect, according to the CDC.
But we can still learn a lesson from this. Plants grow in soil. Growers must continue to be careful in monitoring the quality of their soil. And what about consumers? Eat your kale — and include lots of other colorful fruits and vegetables. As with all things in nature, variety is key for good health.
33.The medicine researcher made a conclusion that _______.
A. these medical conditions were related to thallium
B. trace amounts of thallium had little effect on the body
C. thallium was found in trace amounts in the minerals
D. kale had a lot of health benefits on human bodies
34.According to the writer, the original report in a web magazine is _______.
A. scientific B. essential C. unreliable D. popular
35.The writer thinks that kale is _______.
A. safe to consume B. poisonous to eat
C. hard to conserve D. terrible to smell

Money Matters
Parents should help their children understand money. 36 So you may start talking about money when your child shows an interest in buying things, candy or toys, for example.
1.The basic function of money

understands the basic function of money, you can start explaining more complex ways of using money.
2.Money lessons
Approach money lessons with openness and honesty. 38 If you must say no to a child’s request to spend money, explain, “ You have enough toy trucks for now.” Or, if the request is for many different things, say, “You have to make a choice between this toy and that toy.”
3. 39 .
Begin at the grocery store. Pick out similar brands of a product — a name brand butter and a generic (无商标产品), for example. You can show your child how to make choices between different brands of a product so that you can save money. 40 If he chooses the cheaper brand, allow him to make another purchase with the money saved. Later, you may explains how the more expensive choice leaves less money for other purchases.

B. The value of money.
C. Permit the child to choose between them.
D. Tell your child why he can — or cannot — have certain things.
E. Ask yourself what things that cost money are most important to you.
F. Talk about how the money bought the thing after you leave the toy store.
G. The best time to teach a child anything about money is when he shows an interest.

Good morning, everyone! It is my honour to be here to share with my opinions on what to learn in senior high school.
In the coming three years , our school life will be challenging. First ,we should learn to learn efficiently. Personally, I used to try effective methods to achieve my academic goals. Developing a good habit is also of importance. It really benefited me a lot to preview lessons, get actively involved in class, and review what had been taught after class.
In addition, we should learn how to get along well with others. In school, I respected teachers and was friendly with classmates. It was with sincerity and faithfulness that we created a harmonious atmosphere.
Finally, we should take part in sports and outdoors activities frequently. They were really helpful to build up my body and enrich my school life.
No pains no gains. I am sure that with great efforts ,you will enjoy a colorful and fruitful life here. Thank you!

Text 1
W: Hey, how did you do on the exam?
M: Ah, I got an 82. It’s OK, I guess. But I thought I’d get at least an 85. (1)
Text 2
W: If you scare me like that again, I’ll yell and the neighbors will hear. (2)
M: I’m sorry. It was too good to pass up. You were just sitting there, and I thought it would be funny to throw the cat on you.
Text 3
W: When will you be home? M: Around three.
W: OK. I’ll need the car after that. I’m going to the movies with Sharon. (3)
M: Oh. I was hoping to take you out to dinner.
Text 4
W: Airport, please. I’m running a little late. So just take the fastest way, even if it’s not the most direct. (4)
M: Sure, but there is a lot of traffic everywhere today because of the football game.
Text 5
M: I’m still wondering whether we should get another credit card.
W: Isn’t that just another bill to pay?
M: It could be. But we don’t have to use it a lot. I just want to build up our credit scores. (5) They’re not as high as they should be, and the only way to get a home loan is to have really good credit.
Text 6
W: I don’t know if I can do it, Dad.
M: Take your time, honey. I know it’s still a little painful.
W: It is. I’m afraid, too. M: I understand. But Guy won’t do anything to you. I promise.
W: What if he gets scared again?
M: This is a safe place. No one’s going to make him scared. It wasn’t his fault last time, remember?
W: I know. Poor Guy! He didn’t mean to hurt me. Horses just get scared at loud noises sometimes. He didn’t mean to throw me off — did you, Guy? (6) OK, Dad. I think I’m ready to get on him again.
M: How’s your neck? (7)
W: Not too bad today. I think I can ride. (7)
Text 7
M: What an ugly color! Look at that green…it looks like someone threw up on this sweater. Why would anyone buy it? (8)
W: This color has a long history. Before it came to be on this sweater, it was the color of the year, picked by the top fashion designers in the world. (9) The year it was chosen — I think it was 1983 — it was on all the most expensive, fashionable clothing. People who can’t afford the best clothing still have to wear something — and they like to keep up with the trends, too. So, this color that you think is so bad was carefully picked and affected much of the world in its time. Now, of course, it looks less impressive than it did back then — especially being on such a poorly made sweater.
Text 8
W: Something great happened today. M: What’s that?
W: Well, you know that my Uncle Jim has been very sick for a while.
M: Yeah, poor man! How’s he doing these days?
W: Worse and worse. Last week, the doctors finally said they couldn’t do anything more to help him. They sent him home, thinking he would die within a few days. (10)
M: Oh, no! Is he going to die soon?
W: No! That’s the amazing thing. When I found out he’d gotten out of the hospital, I went to his house. He wasn’t feeling great, but we sat and talked about some good memories we had. After that, I went over every day. I read stories to him, and we watched movies and played video games together. (11) And we laughed a lot! I don’t think I’ve ever laughed that much! Today, he had an appointment with the doctors. They only thought he could get worse, but he’s getting better!
M: That’s great! So, you think it was because he wasn’t in the hospital anymore?
W: I think it’s the laughing. They say laughter is the best medicine! (12)

W: I thought you went to work. Why are you still home, Daniel?
M: I didn’t want to tell you, because I didn’t want you to worry. I lost my job last week. (13)
W: Uh-oh! What about the rent? How are you going to pay your share? (14)
M: Um… I was hoping you’d help me out a little, Erin. Isn’t that what older sisters are for?
W: Yeah, I guess they are…but I can’t pay my baby brother’s rent forever. We’ll have to move to a cheaper place soon if you don’t get another job. What are you planning to do?
M: I don’t know! I thought my job at the theater was perfect. (15)
W: You only sold tickets to people and helped them find their seats.
M: Right, but I got to watch great performances for free!
W: Come on! You could be doing something better than that! I know you’re a great cook, and you’ve always wanted to open your own sandwich shop. Why don’t you try to do that? (16)
M: Where would I begin? I don’t know anything about running a business. (16)
W: Well, I do. I’ve been running my online store for five years. I know all the legal stuff you have to do to get started. And my friend Mike just closed his coffee house, and it’s the perfect space for your sandwich shop. It has a nice little kitchen in it already. (16)
M: That sounds perfect! You’re a great sister!

Hey, class! Guess where you’re going for the annual school trip? To France! It’s going to be amazing! (17) And guess who’s going with you? Yes, your favorite teacher — me, Mr. Fun! But seriously, this is probably going to be the best trip yet. Mr. Mayer and I are planning what we’ll do while we’re there. We’ll be going during spring break, at the end of March. (18) The flowers in the French countryside will be blooming while we eat delicious French bread for breakfast. We’ll be staying in the beautiful city of Nice for a few days, where we’ll watch a boat race along the Mediterranean coast. We’re also planning to spend plenty of time in Paris. Our days in the capital will be spent walking around the city streets in search of good desserts, drinking coffee in the famous cafés, and visiting places like the Eiffel Tower. (19) One day, we will play a human chess game against a local Paris high school. You’ve gotten pretty good at the game, so we’ll see how well you can play against another school! (20) Remember that it’s always a game where the best strategy wins. You’ll still have to try to win their king in a creative way. Afterwards, we’ll all go out for steak and French fries! We’re going to have a great time!
