Researchers at a university in Hungary say there is truth to what many dog owners always believed. Dogs do understand what humans say.
The researchers made images of the brains of 13 dogs using a machine that records brain activity. The dogs were trained to lie down in the machine for seven minutes. During that time, they listened through headphones to their trainers’ voices.
Dog owners may think the news is not surprising. But scientists are impressed. Brian Hare is a professor at Duke University. He called one of the findings a “shocker.”
The brain imaging showed dogs processed words using the left side of their brains, just as humans do. They use the right side of their brains to understand tone and pitch (音调). The study showed dogs understand words and how they are said. Meaningful words said in a neutral (中性的) way did not have the same effect as the same words said in an encouraging way.
Attila Andics was the lead researcher on the project. “Dog brains care about both what we say and how we say it,” he said. Researchers say they think dogs are tuned in to what people say because dogs have lived with people for a long time. Andics said he thinks other animals probably can understand human language like dogs do. But those animals are not very interested in what humans have to say.
People reacted to the story on Facebook and Twitter. They said they always knew their pets could understand them. And they were happy to see scientific support for what they experienced every day. One reader from Virginia said she thought her dog could probably read her mind, too. Someone in California joked that he always knew his dog ignored him. And Greg Matos in Boston called the study “fascinating!”
24. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the text?
A. Humans use the left side of the brains to process words.
B. Dogs have no difficulty understanding words said in a neutral way.
C. Other animals can also understand human language just as dogs do.
D. Dog owners can hardly believe the story that Dogs do understand what humans say.
25. What does the word “they” in the 4th paragraph refer to?
A. researchers B. dogs C. dog owners D. people in general
26. The method the author uses to develop the last paragraph is ________.
A. offering analyses B. providing explanations
C. giving examples D. making comparisons
27. The main purpose of the passage is to ________.
A. compare and evaluate B. debate and explain
C. argue and discuss D. inform and explain

Bob Dylan was named the surprise winner of the Nobel Prize for literature in Stockholm today “for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition”.
Speaking to reporters after the announcement, the permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, Sara Danius said she “hoped” the Academy would not be criticized(批评) for its choice.
“The times they are a changing, perhaps”, she said, comparing the songs of the American songwriter, who had yet to be informed of his win, to the works of Homer and Sappho.
“Of course he deserves it – he’s got it,” she said. “He’s a great poet – a great poet in the English speaking tradition. For 54 years he’s been at it, reinventing himself constantly, creating a new identity.”
Danius said the choice of Dylan may appear surprising, “but if you look far back, 5000 years, you discover Homer and Sappho. They wrote poetic texts which were meant to be performed, and it’s the same way for Bob Dylan. We still read Homer and Sappho, and we enjoy it. We can and should read him.”
The winner of the Nobel Prize for literature is chosen by the 18 members of the Swedish Academy, who are looking for “the person who shall have produced in the field of literature the most outstanding work in an ideal direction”, according to Alfred Nobel’s will. The award itself admits on its website that “Alfred Nobel’s prescriptions for the literature prize were quite vague”, adding that “in fact, the history of the literature prize appears as a series of attempts to interpret an imprecisely worded will”.
Major writers believed to have been in the running for the award included the Kenyan Ngugi wa Thiong’o, the American Don DeLillo and the Japanese Haruki Murakami.
Dylan becomes the first American to win the Nobel Prize for literature since Toni Morrison took the prize in 1993.
28. What was Bob Dylan named winner of the Nobel Prize for literature for?
A. The suggestion from Sara Danius. B. His creation of new poetic expressions.
C. His contribution to American history. D. His wonderful performances as a songwriter.
29. According to the passage, who will decide the winner of the Nobel Prize for literature?
A. Alfred Nobel’s will. B. Poetic texts of Homer and Sappho.
C. The history of the literature prize. D. The 18 members of the Swedish Academy.
30. What can we know from the last two paragraphs?
A. Haruki Murakami is a great writer from Africa.
B. Don DeLillo and Ngugi wa Thiong’o are both Americans.
C. Three persons competed for the 2016 Nobel Prize for literature.
D. Dylan is the second American to win the Nobel Prize for literature.
31. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. Bob Dylan wins the 2016 Nobel Prize in literature.
B. Bob Dylan contributes greatly to the American literature.
C. Sara Danius remarks on the contributions of Bob Dylan.
D. The works of Bob Dylan compare with those of Homer and Sappho.

If you frequently find yourself covered in mosquito bites while others escape, you can blame your genes (基因).
British scientists have discovered evidence that some people are simply born to attract mosquitoes. In experiments they found that people’s body smell attracted the insects in different ways and this was strongly influenced by genetics.
The team, led by scientists at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, found that pairs of identical twins — who share 100 percent of their genes — are equally attractive to mosquitoes. Non-identical twins, who only share about 50 percent of their genes, however, differ in the degree to which they attract mosquitoes.
The results show that the feature has a similar link to genes as height and IQ. The findings build on previous work, which links body smell to the chances of being attacked by mosquitoes. The team also includes scientists from Nottingham University and the University of Florida. They think that some individuals produce a natural
insect repellent (驱虫剂) that keeps them safe.
Lead scientist Dr James Logan, from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said, “By investigating the genetic mechanism (遗传机制) behind attractiveness to biting insects such as mosquitoes, we can move closer to using this knowledge for better ways of keeping us safe from bites and the diseases insects can spread through bites. If we understand the genetic basis for variation between individuals, it could be possible to develop ways to control mosquitoes better, and develop new ways to drive them away. In the future we may even be able to take a pill which will increase the production of natural repellents by the body and finally replace skin lotions (药液).”
32. The experiment involving twins suggests that _______.
A. mosquito bites may result from genes B. body smell differs from person to person
C. body smell is to blame for mosquito bites D. mosquitoes can be killed by genetic means
33. It’s implied in Paragraph 4 that one’s height and IQ _______.
A. affect each other greatly B. are both influenced by genes
C. can’t be explained by genetics D. have a lot to do with the environment
34. Why are some people free from mosquito bites according to the text?
A. They have taken some pills. B. They use certain skin lotions.
C. Their body produces a special smell. D. Their skin contains natural repellents.
35. What’s Dr James Logan’s tone like in the last paragraph?
A. Concerned. B. Curious. C. Annoyed. D. Hopeful.

Make friends with people who own or work at the local arts and crafts store. This can help you get valuable deep understanding of sales, styles and special offers. 39 Also you may probably meet others who are interested in the same crafts that you like.
40 A rainy day might seem like the perfect time to do arts and crafts indoors, either alone or with your friends. However, if there are steps like spray (喷洒) painting involved, those are usually better done outside.

书面表达
Dear Mike,
How surprised and pleased to have received your letter today! You told me that your parents asked to see your Wechat Moments and that, you’re hesitating about whether to share it with them. As I see it, it is understandable for your
parents to do so.
Blood is thicker than water. Parents are our most believable persons in the world. As parents, they have responsibility to make sure we make right friends and won’t be harmed or misled by bad information. As teenagers, we do need parents’ guidance, especially in terms of social experience. Moreover, sharing your Moments will bring your whole family closer to each other. Therefore, you’d better give them a place in your own world so that you can communicate easily. Please remember me to your parents.
Yours,
Wang wei
