Social media is one of the fastest-growing industries in today’s world. A study conducted by the US think tank (智囊团) Pew Research Center showed that 92 percent of teenagers go online daily.
The wide spread of social media has changed nearly all parts of teenagers’ lives.
Changing relationships
High school student Elly Cooper from Illinois said social media often reduces face-to-face communication.
“It makes in-person relationships harder because people give attention to their phones instead of their boyfriends or girlfriends,” Cooper said.
There’s also a greater possibility of things getting lost in translation over social media.
“If half of your relationship is over social media, you don’t really know how the other person is reacting,” Sienna Schulte, a junior student from Illinois, said.
Yet, some people believe social media has made it easier to start relationships with anyone from anywhere. Beth Kaplan from Illinois met her long-distance friend through social media. He currently lives in Scotland, but they’re still able to frequently communicate with one another.
“I can feel close to someone that I’m talking to via(通过)FaceTime,” Kaplan said.
Wanting to be “liked”
The rise of social media has changed the way teenagers see themselves.
The 19-year-old Essena O’Neill announced on the social networking service Instagram that she was quitting social media because it made her obsessed (痴迷) with appearing perfect online.
Negative comments also can do great damage to a teenager’s self-esteem (自尊).
In particular, anonymous (匿名的) social media apps such as Yik Yak may provide opportunities for cyber bullying (网络欺凌).
The app allows users within 5 miles (8 km) to create and add comments to everything. Teenagers who get negative comments on these sites can’t help but feel hurt.
Opening new doors
However, Armin Korsos, a student from Illinois, takes advantage of the comments he receives over social media to improve his videos on the social networking site Youtube.
“Social media can help peop le show themselves and their talents to the world in a way that was never possible before,” Korsos said.
But Korsos recognizes that social media has become a distraction (让人分心的事).“Social media, though it helps people connect with their friends and stay updated, is not all necessary.”
58. What is the article mainly about?
A. The major problems with social media.
B. The effect of social media on teenagers.
C. How teenagers benefit from social media.
D. Why social media appeals so much to teenagers.
59. How does social media change relationships, according to the article?
A. It pushes people to meet their friends more often offline.
B. It encourages people to pay more attention to those around them.
C. It enables users to understand accurately what others are talking about online.
D. It allows people to keep in touch with their friends who live far away more easily.
60. Essena O’Neill decided to disconnect herself from social media because ______.
A. she couldn’t tolerate cyberbullying on social media
B. she wanted to spend more time with her friends in reality
C. she was troubled by her desire to look perfect on social media
D. she always felt hurt by the negative information online
61. Which statement about the use of social media would Armin Korsos probably agree with?
A. The use of social media taught him to turn negative comments into motivations.
B. Social media can easily become an addiction(着迷), despite its benefits.
C. Social media is mostly a distraction to teenagers, so it is unnecessary for it to exist.
D. If used well, social media can create opportunities for teenagers to develop themselves.

Six-month-old babies are strictly limited in what they can remember about the objects they see in the world. If you hide several objects from babies, they will only remember one of those objects. But a new study, which was published in an issue of Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, finds that when babies “forget” about an object, not all is lost. Researchers used to think that babies less than two years old did not understand that an object
continues to exist when it is not in the baby’s view. But in mid-1980s, new ways of doing experiments with babies found that they do, in fact, know that objects don’t disappear when they do not look at them -- a concept known as object permanence. But it was still unknown what babies needed to remember about objects in order to remember their existence.
Now Melissa Kibbe, of John Hopkins University, and Alan Leslie, of Rutgers University, are working to figure out exactly what it is that babies remember about objects. For the new study, they showed six-month-old babies two objects, a disk and a triangle. Then they hid the objects behind small screens, first one shape, then the other. Earlier research has shown that young babies can remember what was hidden most recently, but have more trouble remembering the first object that was hidden. Once the shapes were hidden, they lifted the screen in front of the first object. Sometimes they showed babies the shape that was hidden there originally, but sometimes it was the other shape, and sometimes the object had vanished completely.
Psychologists (心理学家) measure how long babies look at something to see how surprised they are. In Kibbe and Leslie’s study, babies weren’t particularly surprised to see that screen had changed, for example, from a triangle to a disk. But if the object was gone altogether, the babies looked significantly longer, indicating surprise at an unexpected result: “This shows that even though babies don’t remember the shape of the object, they know that it should continue to exist,” Kibbe says. “They remember the object without remembering the features that identify(鉴别) that object.”
This helps explain how the young brain processes information about objects, Leslie say. He thinks the brain has a structure that acts like a kind of pointer, a mental finger that points at an object.
62. Before the study, which of the following was unclear?
A. Whether babies know objects are gone.
B. What made babies remember objects’ existence.
C. Whether babies can remember what was hidden first.
D. Why babies were interested in what was hidden.
63.In the second paragraph, the underlined word “vanished” probably means “_____________ ”.
A. forgotten B. disappeared C. discovered D. hidden
64. The study helps us better understand _____________.
A. how the young brain deals with information about objects
B. whether babies can remember features of hidden objects
C. whether babies were surprised when they found the objects disappeared
D. why babies less than two years did not understand a hidden object still existed
65. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A. A new concept — object permanence B. All remembered isn’t lost
C. What babies remember about objects D. A new study on psychology
D
I was raised on a farm in the Fraser Valley along with five sisters and one brother. When I was 15, I got addicted to drinking at weekends and then dropped out of school. By the time I was 17, I continued to drink heavily. I couldn't find a job to support myself. So, I had no other choice but to join the army. I retired and went back home three years later, still a heavy drinker. When I was 22, I met Sue whose father was also a heavy drinker, so my behavior didn't surprise her. We were soon married and later had two daughters.
I started my first business when I was in my mid-twenties. A few years later, I bought a large chicken farm. Even with this success, though, my drinking was always a problem. It affected my marriage and family so much that I knew I had to make up my mind to stop drinking. So I tried great efforts. But two years later, I began drinking again.
When I was in my mid-thirties, I sold both of my businesses, and bought the big house on the hill. I was not at all happy, although I had everything that was supposed to make me happy. I sold our big house on the hill and bought a large land, where I built a new house. Our marriage was in big trouble, and my finances would go down the drain. For the first time in many years, I had to go to work for someone as an employee. I took a job as a heavy equipment operator in a road building camp.
My marriage still came apart when I was 38, and my kids had to go through our divorce. I spent 6 months in giving up drinking on a school camp. Nearly a year later, I met my childhood neighbor girl, June. We were married not long afterwards. My kids learned to trust me and I have two stepchildren that also love me.
Happy life continued about ten years. Everything was going so well when I felt there was something wrong with my body. I went to see a doctor, and the medical examination came out that I had ALS(肌肉萎缩症). Record shows that people with ALS generally survive between two to five years after symptoms appear. I've probably had the symptoms for one-and-a-half years already, so I don't know how much time I have left.…God knows…

C. become worse and worse D. be safe in one’s pocket
68. What can we know about the author?
A. He began drinking at the age of 17.
B. He ended his army life at the age of 19.
C. He was not happy, although he lived in the big house at the age of 35.
D. He bought the big house on the hill when he was 25.
69. What can we infer about the author’s marriage?
A. His two kids didn’t trust him before he remarried.
B. His finance was the first thing that led to the failure of his first marriage.
C. His first wife didn’t know about his drinking before marriage.
D. He gave birth to two children in his 40s.
70. What is true according to the last paragraph?

M: But here comes Paul Timmons! Wow! Look at him go!
W: It’s very close … and … It’s Timmons! Paul Timmons is the new European champion! Timmons wins gold!
M: A great gold medal!
W: … and in record time, too!
M: Wow! Is that a new world record?
W: No, but it’s a new European record!
M: An excellent performance by Paul Timmons!

W: This is the most beautiful palace in the city, but it’s not as big as the one we’ve just visited.
M: How many palaces are there in the city?
W: Three.
M: Just three? I thought there are more.
W: On your right, you can see a statue of Paulo Pimentez.
M: I’m sorry. Who’s he?
W: He was a famous writer who lived and died in the city.
M: I think I saw another statue of him in the park. It was beautiful!
W: That wasn’t a statue of Paulo Pimentez you saw in the park. There are a lot of statues in the city.

W: Can I help you?
M: Yes, I bought the T-shirt in the sale here a couple of weeks ago. I think it was …
W: I see, yes …
M: And I’ve only worn it a few times, but when I looked at it yesterday I just thought, no, I don’t like it. I don’t think it suits me. The colour’s not really right for me. Do you know what I mean?
W: Well … um, do you have any receipt, or proof of purchase?
M: No, no, I didn’t keep the receipt, sorry.
W: Well, we can’t normally exchange goods without proof of purchase, you see.
M: Oh no.
W: I can speak to the manager if you like, see what he says.
M: Well yes, if you would … because I would like to change it.

M: I’m broke again. Could you lend me some money?
W: Broke again? Jeff, this is the third time you’ve asked me for help!
M: I know, I’m sorry. But my old guitar broke, and I had to buy a new one.
W: Look Jeff, if you want to play in a band, that’s OK with me, but you can’t keep asking me to pay for it!
M: OK, OK, you’re right. But what do you think I ought to do?
W: Well, I think you had better go on a budget. Make a list of all your income and all your expenses. Don’t spend more than you earn.
M: But my expenses are always larger than my income.
W: Then maybe you should work more hours at the computer store.
M: I already work 15 hours a week! Maybe I should just drop out of school, work full-time, and play in the band in the evenings.
W: Come on, Jeff, when I was your age …
M: I know, I know. When you were my age you were already married and working and going to school …

W: Thank you to all the competitors. I won’t say much because I know you’re all anxious to hear the results — it was a very difficult decision and I’ll start with the band which came in fourth. That’s Texas Team, who are the youngest group here today. Unfortunately, the violinist played so quietly that we couldn’t hear him. So bad luck to Texas Team. Third was Eastside. They are such good dancers they should enter for a dance competition. And with a bit more practice on the music they’ll do very well. In second place is Third Avenue. They did well, especially their young guitarist, but the singer looked so unhappy we thought maybe he didn’t want to win! Never mind — you nearly won, so better luck next time. Congratulations to The Storm who are our winners today. The singer had such a great voice that we had to give them first place. Well done.
