It was a normal school day for senior Solymar Solis until an unexpected visitor arrived. Her dad, Sgt. Carlos Solis Melendez, surprised her by coming home early from Kuwait and visiting her unannounced at Spring Valley High School in South Carolina.
After serving in Kuwait for nine months, Melendez returned home a week earlier than his daughter expected. He held balloons and flowers in a classroom as he sat at a student’s desk to blend in with the crowd. “It came across my mind like, ‘How is she going to react?’”he recalled the heartwarming moment. “Is she going to be happy and run to me and hug me, or cry? That was all going on through my mind.”
As unsuspecting Solymar entered the classroom, she was soon overcome with emotion, immediately bursting into tears and covering her mouth. She didn’t talk. She was just crying. She was overwhelmed with everything. She thought it was a dream.
Melendez was a single parent so while he was deployed(调动), he got his sister to live with his daughter. When he was coming back and talking to his sister, both of them came to the conclusion that they should do something special for his daughter. Melendez and his sister got in touch with the school, and they planned this whole being-in-the-classroom thing, and it turned out perfect.
The two are very much looking forward to some good daddy-daughter time now that he’s home. “It means everything,” Melendez said of being able to surprise his daughter this way. “After all the sacrifices she’s made, she deserves all the special arrangements and special occasions and celebrations. I’ll do anything for my daughter. I believe I’m doing good parenting.”

Have you ever been given something you don’t like or doesn’t fit, but you don’t want to hurt the feelings of the person who thinks about you? You’re not alone. Everyone has received an unwanted gift at least once in his or her life. That doesn’t mean the item is bad or useless. It simply means that it doesn’t work for you.
If you find yourself with something nice but that doesn’t fit into your lifestyle, consider regifting it. Before you do that, make sure you understand the manners of this practice that is more and more common as people find it difficult to make ends meet to a great extent.
There are specific things you should do to an item. Failure to do any of them may create an awkward situation. You never have to lie about what you are doing, but you don’t want to be in the position of having to explain anything. For example, remove the original wrapping paper and rewrap it in your own; make sure the box is in good condition so the item doesn’t appear used; check the item and make sure there are no cards or names on the packaging; inspect the item and make sure it is in excellent condition.
When you get ready for regifting, consider having a white elephant gift exchange for your next celebration. This removes all the embarrassment of being caught regifting because that’s the whole purpose of the event. In order to prevent hurting feelings, provide everyone with a guest list and ask them not to bring anything given by the people on that list.
28. Why does the author begin the passage with a question?
A. To share a hot phenomenon. B. To introduce the following part.
C. To ask for readers’ answers. D. To point out a common opinion.
29. What most contributes to the growing regifting?
A. People’s lack of money. B. People’s dislike of the gifts.
C. People’s reduced desire for gifts. D. People’s understanding of its manners.
30. What’s mainly talked about in Paragraph 3?
A. What to do before regifting. B. How to make use of unwanted gifts.
C. What kind of gifts to be regifted. D. Why regifting can cause embarrassment.
31. What does the underlined phrase in the last paragraph mean?
A. Suitable but valueless. B. Expensive and useful.
C. Packaged and invaluable. D. Nice but unsuitable.
D
When it's five o'clock, people leave their office. The length of the workday, for many workers, is defined by time. They leave when the clock tells them they're done.
These days, the time is everywhere: not just on clocks or watches, but on cell-phones and computers. That may be a bad thing, particularly at work. New research shows that clock-based work schedules hinder morale (士气) and creativity.
Clock-timers organize their day by blocks of minutes and hours. For example: a meeting from 9 a. m. to 10 a. m. , research from 10 a. m. to noon, etc. On the other hand, task-timers have a list of things they want to accomplish. They work down the list, each task starts when the previous task is completed. It is said that all of us employ a mix of both these types of planning.
What, then, are the effects of thinking about time in these different ways? Does one make us more productive? Better at the tasks at hand? Happier? In experiments conducted by Tamar Avnet and Anne-Laure Sellier, they had participants organize different activities—from project planning, holiday shopping, to yoga—by time or to-do list to measure how they performed under "clock time" vs "task time". They found clock timers to be more efficient but less happy because they felt little control over their lives. Task timers are happier and more creative, but less productive. They tend to enjoy the moment when something good is happening, and seize opportunities that come up.
The researchers argue that task-based organizing tends to be undervalued and under-supported in business culture. Smart companies, they believe, will try to bake more task-based planning into their strategies.
This might be a small change to the way we view work and the office, but the researchers argue that it challenges a widespread characteristic of the economy: work organized by clock time. While most people will still probably need, and be, to some extent, clock-timers, task-based timing should be used when performing a job that requires more creativity. It'll make those tasks easier, and the task-doers will be happier.
32. What is the way people often do their work according to the author?
A. They give priority to the most urgent task on hand.
B. They set a time limit for each specific task.
C. They combine clock-based and task-based planning.
D. They accomplish their tasks one by one.
33. What did the researchers find in their experiments about clock-timers?
A. They tend to be more productive. B. They seize opportunities as they come up.
C. They always get their work done in time. D. They have more control over their lives.
34. What is the researchers’ opinion about today's business culture?
A. It does not support the strategies adopted by smart companies.
B. It attaches more importance to work efficiency than to workers' lives.
C. It aims to bring employees' potential and creativity into full play.
D. It does not lay enough emphasis on task-based practice.
35. From the passage, we can conclude that _______.
A. it is important to keep a balance between work and life.
B. task-based timing is preferred for doing creative work.
C. performing creative jobs tends to make workers happier.
D. a scientific standard should be adopted in job evaluation.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
It’s nice being nice to others; it’s also great to give people a hand. However, if you start to hurt yourself by doing so, then this is not so healthy. 36 If you fear that you might fall into this category, the following tips will help you to stand up for yourself and regain your self-confidence.
37
Although you may often stay silent if something is wrong or bothers you, it is better to speak your mind right away. You don’t have to be rude, but you do have to be firm and direct. Don’t do things for others if you don’t really want to. Speak up, and soon others will be seeing you in a whole new light.
Start small.
38 This will allow you to practice being brave and self-confident. Tell a person who has cut in line in front of you to move to the back of the line, or tell a salesperson to do that. Before long, you will be confident enough to stand up to your friends and family member.
Judge well.
When dealing with others, you have to exercise good judgment. 39 If a colleague isn’t doing his part, you should rightfully demand that he start doing so. However, if a taxi cuts you off in traffic, just let it go.
40 Rome wasn’t built in a day. If you want to get back again after having been a pushover(耳软心活的人), it’s best to take one step at a time.
A. Express yourself.
B. Regain your confidence.
C. Start by speaking up for yourself with strangers.
D. Everyone has the right to live without being judged.
E. If you slip back into the pushover mode every once in a while, don’t blame yourself.
F. Sadly, some people are so easily pushed around that they come to be seen as pushovers.
G. It’s one thing to be confident, but quite another to forcefully say no to an unreasonable request.

Carlos Solis Melendez, surprised her by coming home early from kuwait and visiting her unannounced at Spring Valley High School in South Carolina”可知,本文主要讲述的是一个女孩在教室收到服役归来的父亲给的惊喜,故C项最能概括文章。
28.B。考查推理判断。作者以一个问题开篇,然后下文向本文的主题“转送礼物”过渡,由此可知,作者开篇使用一个问题是为了引出下文。
29.A。考查细节理解。根据第二段中的“Before you do that, make sure you understand the manners of this practice that is more and more common as people find it difficult to make ends meet to a great extent”可知,礼物转送变得流行很大程度上是因为转送者发现很难收支平衡,即缺钱。
30.A。考查主旨要义。根据第三段的内容尤其是“There are specific things you should do to an item”“For example, remove the original wrapping paper and rewrap it in your own… inspect the item and make sure it is in excellent condition”可知,本段主要讲述的是转送礼物之前的准备工作。第四段首句中的“When you get ready for regifting”亦是提示。
31.D。考查词意猜测。根据第一段中的“Have you ever been given something you don’t like or doesn’t fit, but you don’t want to hurt the…”并结合第二段中的首句可知,在white elephant party上,人人交换的是“white elephant gifts”(昂贵而无用的礼物),即他们不需要的礼物。故选D。
32.C。细节理解题。由第三段中的“ It is said that all of us employ a mix of both these types of planning.” 可知
33.A。细节理解题。由第四段中的“They found clock timers to be more efficient but less happy because they felt little control over their lives. Task timers are happier and more creative, but less productive.”可知
34.D。细节理解题。由倒数第二段“The researchers argue that task-based organizing tends to be undervalued and under-supported in business culture.”可知
35.B。推理判断题。由最后一段中的"While most people will still probably need, and be, to some extent, clock-timers, task-based timing should be used when performing a job that requires more creativity.”可知
36.F F项中的“some people are so easily pushed around”与上文的“if you start to hurt yourself by doing so”相呼应,并且后一句中“this category”指的就是F项中的“pushovers”。故选F项。
37.A 根据下文中的“it is better to speak your mind right away”和“Speak up”可知,本段主要讲述的是要表达自己的想法,故A项正确。
38.C 结合小标题“Start small”及空后的“This will allow you to practice being brave and self-confident”可知,C项“Start by speaking up for yourself with strangers(从跟陌生人说出你的想法开始)”符合语境。
39.G 根据空后的“If a colleague isn’t doing his part, you should rightfully demand that he start doing so…”可知G项符合语境。
40.E 根据“Rome wasn’t built in a day(罗马不是一天建成的)”可知,万事都是不可能“一蹴而就”的,因此“If you slip back into the pushover mode every once in a while, don’t blame yourself”符合语境。故选E项。

(Text 1)
W: Oh, no! I’ve left my new hat somewhere.
M: I don’t remember you having it at lunch in the restaurant. You must have left it in your car.
(Text 2)
M: What time is it by your watch? Mine reads 9:15.
W: Your watch is 2 hours slow.
(Text 3)
M: What do you think about traveling by ferry to France?
W: The kids would love it, but I get seasick. The train is quicker and goes all the way. That’s the best way to see the countryside.
(Text 4)
M: What’s wrong, Rachel? You aren’t looking yourself!
W: My mum’s got a job in Liverpool! I’ve finally made friends after years of loneliness here. Now off we go again. Why can’t my mum have a steady job?
(Text 5)
M: Home at last ! That was the last time we had a holiday in the Lake District.
W: It was beautiful! At least it didn’t snow.
M: I would have preferred snow to constant rain. We had never seen the sun there!
(Text 6)
W: I wish I could play music like you! When did you learn to play the guitar?
M: Oh, I’ve been playing since I was eight, and I’m seventeen years old now. During that time I learned to play the drum too.
W: What about it? That must be really difficult.
M: In the beginning, it really was, but after a few lessons I got better. Practice makes perfect, you know. For me, the most difficult is the piano. I once tried it, but gave up.
(Text 7)
M: Hi, very glad to meet you here.
W: Hi, have we met before?
M: Aren’t you the woman who gave the computer lecture at the city library last winter?
W: Yes, it’s me. You look familiar. Were you there in my class then?
M: Yes, sure. I’m so glad I took your lecture. And I’ve benefited quite a lot from it.
W: Thanks. It’s also rewarding for me to do something meaningful in my spare time.
M: Oh, I thought you were an IT engineer or something like an expert in this profession.
W: Not exactly, but I know a bit about computer.
M: I thought that it would be impossible for me to learn how to use a computer at my age, but now I’m exchanging e-mails with my grandchildren. They say I am learning fast and well. It’s the happiest thing after my retirement.
W: That’s great. Giving a lecture after work is a good experience for me, because that is a change of pace from my daytime job as a sales representative.
M: That’s right.
(Text8)
M: Hey, Julie, haven’t seen you for a while. How is everything?
W: Hi, Gale. Fine, thank you.
M: Why don’t you travel together with us to work? As you know, Cathy will leave our company next month for further education, so we’ve got a spare seat in my car.
W: Thanks, Gale, but I’ve found a suitable ride partner, Ms. Gomez. She is going to move near my apartment next week. So you see it’ll be convenient for a ride.
M: Oh, really? That’s too bad that you couldn’t join us but it’s good you’re taking a car with her. I used to work with her in the marketing department.
W: Oh, did you? I don’t know much about her, but I know for sure that she is never late for appointments.
M: Yes, right. She was doing well in marketing and popular with the colleagues.
W: That’s very nice.
(Text 9)
M: Hi! You seem busy.
W: Hi! You can’t imagine what I have to finish by next Monday! This literature course is so difficult! I have to read two novels by next Monday and hand in a 3000-word essay by next Friday.
M: So you don’t want to come to an exhibition with me this Saturday?
W: I’d love to, but I’m already behind with my writing class because I had a cold for a week and missed a few lessons. You seem to have loads of free time.
M: Well, we just don’t have as much academic work as you. My college life is colourful compared with yours. There’re varieties of live performances as an art major.
W: Yes. I’m bored with the life of reading and writing every day.
M: Hey. Why don’t we stop talking? Just work now. If you have finished everything by the 16th, we could go to that new play.
W: OK. I’ll try. And I don’t want to miss the student party on the 28th, so I’d better get working.
(Text 10)
M: Today we are visiting Woodhill Shelter -- the most unusual animal shelter in Britain. It does not house wild animals rescued from zoos or sea creatures from ocean parks. What it does have is a lot of lucky and happy cows, pigs, goats, sheep and chickens rescued from becoming your lunch by animal rights groups.
The shelter was set up by Jill and Ben Smith. Neither of them eats animal products, but lives instead on a plant-based diet. They say it is a kinder and better way to live. The shelter wasn’t much visited until 3 years after it was built, and now it has large numbers of followers.
