Your friend has made the team for Saturday’s big game, and you take a certain pleasure in telling him you can’t be there to watch him play. You smile, but that voice in you asks, why him and not you?‎ Envy is a fault that we like to keep secret. It raises its ugly head when we focus on what we want but don’t possess now, or we may even wish for and take pleasure in someone losing it. Feelings of unfairness are part of being human, but when you focus on them, you can never get out of your dark emotions. And that makes you feel bad.‎ So is there a solution? Is there anything you can do to stop the most ungenerous emotions?‎ Well, why not turn envy on its head, and make it the encouragement you need for self-improvement? The best weapon against envy is not to compete where you can’t shine, but to do your absolute best where you can.‎ Start by making peace with yourself, and accept the gifts which make you unique. Make an agreement with yourself to be the best you can be. Then find out exactly the circumstances and qualities in others that start your envy. Is it someone’s singing voice, their work promotion or their new car? Envy shows us the things we’d like to have, so make up a plan to earn what’s important to you. Sign up for a night class. Start a training program. Give up a treat or two, and start saving for what you want.‎ And aim for real pleasure in the achievements and good fortune of others. Cheer on your friend when he scores that goal. Enjoy your best friend’s wedding day. Then go out and do something special, and make yourself wonderfully proud of you. ‎ ‎28. The first paragraph is intended to ______.‎ A. give examples B. tell the main idea C. ask questions D. introduce the topic ‎ ‎29. When envy appears, we actually______.‎ A. ignore its existence B. share it with friends C. have feelings of unfairness D. lose something of our own ‎30. What is the best way to help stop envy?‎ A. Competing for what you are not good at. B. Developing your own strengths to the full.‎ C. Forgetting about the things you can’t get. D. Trying to get anything that makes you envy.‎ ‎31. How does the author sound in the passage?‎ A. Unconcerned B. Worried C. Subjective D. Objective D ‎ Millions of teenagers are in danger of putting their health at risk by getting hooked on ‎ ecigarettes, experts warn. Leading health researchers say they are “very concerned” by the growing number of youngsters trying the devices.‎ ‎ Ecigarettes have been marketed as a healthier alternative to smoking conventional cigarettes. But previous research shows ecigarettes generate poisonous chemicals similar to those found in tobacco and may harm the lungs and immune system.‎ ‎ Worryingly, researchers at Liverpool‎ ‎University discovered 16% of teenagers who have used ecigarettes had never previously smoked. The experts also found ecigarettes were “strongly related” to drinking among teenagers. Study author Prof. Mark Bellis said, “Our research suggests that we should be very concerned about teenagers accessing ecigarettes. While debate on ecigarettes has focused largely on whether or not they act as a gateway to tobacco cigarette use, ecigarettes themselves contain a highly addictive drug that may have more serious and longer lasting impacts on children because their brains are still developing.”‎ ‎ Researchers surveyed 16,000 students aged 14 to 17 in the North West of England and asked them about their alcohol and tobacco use. They found that one in five answered yes to the question: “Have you ever bought or tried electronic cigarettes?” More males than females said they had.‎ Of the teenagers that had accessed ecigarettes, 16% had never smoked, 23% had tried smoking, 12% only smoked when drinking, and 14% were exsmokers. The research also found teenagers who drank alcohol were significantly more likely to have accessed ecigarettes than nondrinkers.‎ Among those who had never smoked, it was found that those who regularly have excessive(过多的) drinking were four times more likely to access ecigarettes than those who never drink. In all of those that drink, regardless of smoking status, ecigarette access was associated with excessive drinking and involvement with violence after drinking. The researchers said their findings suggest that teenagers who use ecigarettes are most susceptible to other forms of substance use and risktaking behaviors. ‎ ‎32. How have ecigarettes been promoted in the market?‎ A. As a product preventing smokers from using tobacco products.‎ B. As a device meeting the mental needs of smokers.‎ C. As a new device promoted among youngsters. ‎ D. As a healthier substitute for traditional cigarettes.‎ ‎33. What do we learn from the survey made in the North West of England?‎ A. E-cigarettes are now widely available and heavily promoted.‎ B. The number of adult cigarette smokers is dropping at present.‎ C. Teenagers are very knowledgeable about alcohol and tobacco use. D. E-cigarette access is linked to excessive drinking and violence after it. ‎ ‎34. Which of the following can replace the underlined words “susceptible to” in the last paragraph? ‎ A. greatly interested in B. commonly accustomed to C. easily influenced by D. deeply disappointed at ‎ ‎35. What's the main idea of the passage?‎ A. Experts are concerned about excessive drinking in teenagers.‎ B. Teenagers are in danger of risking their health on ecigarettes. ‎ C. The harm of the ecigarettes is greater than that of alcohol.‎ D. Researchers are aware of smokerelated health harm. ‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ ‎ We all love to hear good news because they make us feel good. 36 Good news give off the happy hormones (荷尔蒙) in our body which lift our moods.‎ ‎ 37 Nobody wants to hear that things are not going well, that something hasn't worked, or that we have failed. When we get bad news we often try to push them away or ignore them, because they do the opposite of good news. They naturally cause worries, stress for us and make us less happy.‎ ‎ At work, bad news are often hidden or ignored. 38 On the other hand, we often believe that the bearers of bad news put themselves in the firing line. In the interest of our own career progression and to keep the general mood up, we don't talk about bad news.‎ ‎ Leaders are often sheltered from bad news. People around them protect them, and they love to only tell the good news, because this makes everyone feel better. 39 ‎ ‎ 40 Instead of the more natural “Oh no, I can't believe it. I don't want to know” reaction, we have to force ourselves to respond more positively along the lines of “Thank you so much for telling me.I really appreciate that.” This does take some conscious efforts and the higher position you are in the organization, the more efforts you should take because of all the people that might “hide” the truth.‎ A.We naturally don't like bad news.‎ B.All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.‎ C.What we have to do is to change our responses to bad news.‎ D.On the one hand, no one wants to admit they made a mistake.‎ E.Personality or culture of a company can't change one's feeling.‎ F.It is personality that makes it difficult for anyone to bring bad news.‎ G.News like getting a promotion or winning a new contract gives us excitement.‎ 第三部分 完型填空 (共一节,满分30分)‎ 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。(共20小题,每小题1.5分,满分30分)‎ One of the easiest things in the world is to become a fault-finder. However, life can be 41 when you are not busy finding fault with it.‎ Several years ago I 42 a letter from seventeen-year-old Kerry, who described herself as a world-class fault-finder, almost always 43 by things. People were always doing things that annoyed her, and 44 was ever good enough. She was highly self-critical and also found fault with her friends. She became a really 45 person.‎ Unfortunately, it took a horrible accident to change her 46 . Her best friend was seriously hurt in a car crash. What made it almost 47 to deal with was that the day before the 48 , Kerry had visited her friend and had spent the whole time criticizing her 49 of boyfriends, the way she was living, the way she related to her mother, and various other things she felt she needed to 50 . It wasn't until her friend was badly hurt that Kerry became 51 her habit of finding fault. Very ‎ quickly, she learned to appreciate life rather than to 52 everything so harshly ( 刻薄) . She was able to transfer her new wisdom to other parts of her 53 as well.‎ Perhaps most of us aren't as extreme at fault-finding, 54 when we're honest, we can be sharply 55 of  the world. I'm not suggesting you 56 problems, or that you pretend things are 57 than they are, but simply that you learn to allow things to be as they are— 58 most of the time, and especially when it's not a really big 59 .‎ Train yourself to "bite your tongue”, and with a little 60 , you'll get really good at letting things go. And when you do, you'll get back your enthusiasm and love for life.‎ ‎41. A. quiet ‎ B. great C. lonely D. uneasy ‎42. A. answered B. expected C. rejected D. received ‎ ‎43.
