About twenty of us had been fortunate enough to receive invitations to a film-studio(影棚) to take part in a crowd-scene.Although our “act” would last only for a short time, we could see quite a number of interesting things.
We all stood at the far end of the studio as workmen prepared the scene, setting up trees at the edge of a winding path. Very soon, bright lights were turned on and the big movie-camera was wheeled into position. The director shouted something to the camera operator and then went to speak to the two famous actors nearby. Since it was hot in the studio, it came as a surprise to us to see one of the actors put on a heavy overcoat and start walking along the path. A big fan began blowing tiny white feathers down on him, and soon the trees were covered in “snow”. Two more fans were turned on, and a “strong wind” blew through the trees. The picture looked so real that it made us feel cold.
The next scene was a complete contrast(对比). The way it was filmed was quite unusual. Pictures taken on an island in the Pacific were shown on a glass screen. An actor and actress stood in front of the scene so that they looked as if they were at the water’s edge on an island. By a simple trick like this, palm trees, sandy beaches, and blue, clear skies had been brought into the studio!
Since it was our turn next, we were left wondering what scene would be prepared for us. For a full three minutes in our lives we would be experiencing the excitement of being film “stars”!

At home, ordering food from a menu is a normal, everyday routine. I don’t even give it a second thought. In China, it’s a whole other story! Here, ordering is a fun game of trial and error, and the adventure begins before the food is even served!
Many restaurants in central Beijing advertise “English language menus”, but the translations can just add to the confusion. Although accompanying pictures can be a helpful relief, the

translations often make the whole experience even more amusing. During my first few weeks in China I tried some delicious dishes with strange names. As an experiment, my friends and I would order things like “students addicted to chicken gristle (软骨)” and “red burned lion head”. It was always fun to see what landed on our table. Eventually we learned that “lion head” was actually pork, and “students” are “addicted” to diced (切碎的) chicken with green pepper.
Recently, I came across a busy restaurant down a narrow side street in a Beijing hutong. It was lunchtime and the small room was packed with people sitting on small stools (凳子) eating noodles. I was hungry and cold, and the steaming bowls looked irresistible! I sat myself down and called out for a “caidan!” In response, the waitress pointed to a wall at the back of the restaurant. The wall was full of Chinese characters describing numerous dishes. There was only one sentence in English: “crossing over the bridge noodles”.
I had never heard of the dish and had no idea what it would taste like. I took a gamble and ordered one bowl of “crossing over the bridge noodles”. A few minutes later the waitress carried over a heavy bowl full of broth (肉汤) and I quickly dug in. It was the best bowl of noodles I had ever tasted! I have been back again and again and each time I point at the one English sentence – “crossing over the bridge noodles”. I always enter a restaurant in China feeling excited and a little nervous. Who knows what the next ordering adventure will reveal?

A new effort is being launched to better educate parents about the earliest signs of autism (孤独症). Doctors at Maryland’s Kennedy Krieger Institute, one of the country’s leading autism centers, say they can now identify symptoms in children at a younger age than before.
Children with autism withdraw into their own private worlds. Most children are not diagnosed until they are 3 to 5 years old, but the signs can appear as early as 6 months. “Most people use the rule of thumb that if a child is showing developmental delays before the age of 3, they’ll catch up, but children with autism usually can’t,” said researcher Rebecca Landa.
Researchers at the institute are showing in a video just what symptoms to look for, even in an infant. In about 30 percent of autism cases, researchers are now documenting what they call “regressive(倒退的)autism”. One boy documented by the Kennedy Krieger Institute was engaged and smiling at his mother at 6 months. When he reached one year, he appeared a little shy, but again, there was no reason for concern. But at the age of 2, he was totally attached to his toys and the signs in him have become more obvious. “Although causes of autism remain unknown, now you can really see autism in its full form,” Landa said.

Chloe was diagnosed with autism at 2, when she could not interact with the children around her, and she hated to be touched. But after four months of intensive treatment, her behavior improved significantly.
“She is talking now,” Landa said. “She looks to the teacher and shares enjoyment. She looks to others to know what she should be doing.” Chloe will still require many more years of treatment, but these early gains do last.
