At 23, I was fresh out of graduate school and working in a nursing home, trying to decide my next path in life. My job involved wheeling residents to the community hall for activities. Elizabeth would wave from her darkened room but refuse to join the gatherings. Nearly blind, and requiring oxygen, she never left her bedside. I soon learned, though, that she loved books, and every day after work I would read to her.
In dim light we made our way through “King Lear,” “Henry IV,” “Jane Eyre,” the poems of Rupert Brooke.
Two golden hours might pass before I’d pack up to return to my apartment. Before I could leave she’d press my hand, saying, “Child — my literary child. You bring me such joy.”
Elizabeth’s husband died a decade earlier, and their only child, a daughter, was distant for what heartbreaking reason I never knew.
One day an old friend of hers visited and brought her some soup. Smiling broadly, Elizabeth squeezed my arm. “Tomorrow, child, we shall feast.”
The next evening I found Elizabeth’s bed empty. “I’m sorry,” the nurse whispered. She handed me a box and nodded. “She left everything to you.” At home, I unpacked it, finding two white sweaters, the dozen leather-bound books and, at the bottom, the can of soup.
That summer I decided my path. I returned to school to study literature.
And for 26 years the soup has stayed in my kitchen. It’s remained unopened and now is rusted(生锈的). But the memories are preserved.
24. Why did Elizabeth refuse to join the gatherings?
A. She had many books to read.
B. She was not a very social person.
C. She was restricted in her movement.
D. She had no interest in those activities.
25. What do we know about Elizabeth?
A. She loved writing poems.
B. She often visited her friends.
C. She got divorced ten years ago.
D. She had little contact with her daughter.
26. Which is correct to best describe the author according to the text?

D. She didn’t like the taste of the soup.

A. A book-loving friend
B. An unforgettable literary journey[来源:Z|xx|k.Com]
C. An interesting nursing experience
D. A short-term job and its lifelong impact

Small talk — the likes of “What do you have there? Popcorn?” or “The weather today is beautiful, isn’t it?” — is meaningless and a waste of time, according to some people. But scientists believe that it is actually more useful than it may appear to be.
One example comes when you are on a train or a plane. The thought of talking to the
stranger sitting beside you can be scary, because you know the conversation is sure to be awkward. But a study by the University of Chicago in the US found that people who chat to strangers enjoy a better ride than those who sit in silence or bury themselves in their phones — most strangers were not only willing to be talked to, but also pleasant to talk to.
“Human beings are social animals,” Nicholas Epley, one of the lead researchers, told Live Science. “Other people are people, too. And it turns out that they’d like to get to know you.”
Apart from making you happier, small talk with strangers can also help you feel connected to your surroundings. Previous studies found that when people are frequently smiled at, made eye contact with and spoken to at coffee shops, they tend to have a stronger sense of belonging instead of feeling like they are being ignored and left out.
And if you are already comfortable enough to make small talk with strangers, you should try to develop it into something “bigger”. A 2010 study proved that having a deep and meaningful conversation gives you even more happiness than small talk. But deep conversations can start with small talk, can’t they? So the first step is to start talking, no matter how casual the topic is. And who knows, maybe an opening line as simple as “I like your hat” could lead to a serious conversation in which you learn something new from a stranger.
28. What does the underlined sentence imply?
A. Most people are defensive to strangers.
B. People tend to know each other.
C. People are afraid of being talked to.
D. People like to show their good side to strangers.
29. According to Para. 4, small talk can make people .
A. waste less time
B. get more useful information
C. feel they’re ignored
D. feel like they are part of the surroundings
30. How can you get more happiness from small talk?
A. Talk to strangers.
B. Start with any topics.
C. Try to make the small talk into a deeper one.
D. Choose pleasant surroundings.
31. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Small talk makes us happy.
B. Different opinions about small talk.
C. How to start a small talk in our daily life.
D. The difference between small talks and deep conversations.

The iPhone, the iPad, each of Apple’s products sounds cool and has become a fad(一时的风尚). Apple has cleverly taken advantage of the power of the letter “i” — and many other brands are following suit. The BBC’s iPlayer — which allows Web users to watch TV programs on the Internet — adopted the title in 2008. A lovely bear — popular in the US and UK — that plays music and video is called “iTeddy”. A slimmed-down version of London’s Independent newspaper was launched last week under the name “i”.
In general, single-letter prefixes(前缀) have been popular since the 1990s, when terms such as e-mail and e-commerce first came into use.
Most “i” products are targeted at young people and considering the major readers of Independent’s “i”, it’s no surprise that they’ve selected this fashionable name.
But it’s hard to see what’s so special about the letter “i”. Why not use “a”, “b”, or “c” instead? According to Tony Thorne, head of the Language Center at King’s College, London, “i” works because its meaning has become uncertain. “When Apple uses “i”, no one knows whether it means Internet, information, individual or interactive.” Thorne told BBC Magazines. “Even when Apple created the iPod, it seems it didn’t have one clear definition,” he says.
“However, thanks to Apple, the term is now associated with portability(轻便),” adds Thorne.
Clearly the letter “i” also agrees with the idea that the Western World is centered on the individual. Each person believes they have their own needs, and we love personalized products for this reason.
Along with “Google” and “blog”, readers of BBC Magazines voted “i” as one of the top 20 words that have come to define the last decade.
But as history shows, people grow tired of fads. From the 1900s to 1990s, products with “2000” in their names became fashionable as the year was associated with all things advanced and modern. However, as we entered the new century, the trend inevitably (一定的)disappeared.
32. People use iPlayer to .
A. listen to music B. make a call
C. watch TV programs online D. read newspapers
33. We can infer that the Independent’s “i” is aimed at .
A. young readers B. old readers
C. fashionable women D. engineers
34. Nowadays, the “i” term often reminds people of the products which are .
A. portable B. environmentally friendly
C. advanced D. recyclable
35. The writer suggests that .
A. “i” products are often of a high quality
B. the popularity of “i” products may not last long
C. the letter “b” replaces letter “i” to name the products
D. iTeddy is a live bear

Selling Hot Dogs Is Big Business
One of the most well-liked foods in America is the hot dog. The selling of hot dogs has already become a popular business. 36 Almost half of the hot dogs were sold between Memorial Day and Labour Day. On July 4th alone, Americans bought 150 million hot dogs.
The sales of hot dogs have increased a lot. 37 New ingredients have widened the appeal of the hot dog to various groups. Many Americans can now choose meatless and low-fat varieties of hot dogs. Chicken, turkey and beef hot dogs are also available for purchase.
The popularity of the hot dog is also the result of the many ways the food is prepared in different parts of the United States. 38 Hot dog lovers in Chicago often use yellow mustard(芥末), raw onions and tomato slices with their hot dogs. In the south, however, people put coleslaw (a kind of salad) in their hot dogs. 39 People from Kansas City enjoy their hot dogs with melted Swiss cheese.
No matter how people order, fix or eat their hot dogs, this convenient meal remains an important part of the American diet. 40 Supermarkets, restaurants and food stands across the United States continue to buy a huge number of hot dogs from suppliers, so they can provide customers with one of their favorite foods: the American hot dog.
A. They are always in such high demand.
B. It is safer to hear a hot dog before you eat it.
C. This is, in part, due to some changes in the product.
D. Last year, Americans ate more than 20 billion hot dogs.
E. The longest hot dog created in the world was 60 metres.
F. People from New York like their hot dogs with a lot of onions.
G. How Americans prepare their hot dogs depends on where they live.

M: In 1492. Columbus sailed the ocean blue.
W: Yeah, well, he did. But it turns out that Columbus wasn’t the first person to get to the New World at all.
M: Was he the first European?
W: No.
M: Who?

W: Simon, you look worried. What’s wrong with you?
M: I’m all right. But it’s my son, Roger.
W: What has happened to him? Can I do something for you?
M: Well, I’m going to New York in three days. And my wife is in London, and she will not return until the end of this month.
W: Oh, I see. You want someone to take care of Roger, don’t you?
M: Yes. But it’s hard work. He is too naughty.
W: Please don’t worry. I’ll look after him during your stay in New York.
M: I will be away for nearly a week. I think there will be too much trouble for you.
W: It doesn’t matter. You see, I was a teacher before I retired. I like children very much.
M: Thank you very much!

W: What courses are you taking?
M: Chinese, maths, English, chemistry, physics, biology and so on.
W: What do you think about the teachers?
M: To be honest, I like most of them, except for my Chinese teacher. She is quite young, but her class is too boring!
W: That’s too bad. Do you have any any foreign teachers?
M: Yes, my oral English teacher is an American. He is from a small town in California.
W: What is he like?
M: He is great. He always tell us not to study for exams, but to pay more attention to communication rather than just recitation.
W: Are you able to follow him?
M: Not everything, but nearly. He speaks very clearly.
W: Oh, that’s good! He sounds like a good teacher.
M: Absolutely! If you were a student and came to our class, I’m sure you would like him.

M: Dear Miss Brown, boys and girls,
2008052524
Today we gather here to have a send-off meeting. Our English teacher Miss Brown is going to return to her own country tomorrow. On behalf of all my schoolmates here I express our hearty thanks to her. In the past two years Miss Brown has taught us spoken English. We enjoyed her lessons very much because her method of teaching was quite different from other teachers. The lessons she gave us were both lively and interesting.
Everyone knows that she was kind and patient, but she was somewhat strict with us at times. With her help, we have made rapid progress in English. All of us did well in the English examination. Now she is going to leave our school. We thank her very much for her wonderful work and hope that she will be able to be back again.
