第一节 (共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下面短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A
A high school senior named Sydney is writing an essay about her parents, so she asked Dad how he and Mom fell in love.
Dad texted her the story, and now it’s being shared all over the world:
“Your mom basically asks me to marry her. We both thought it would be funny to tell our friends since no one would believe it. So at first our engagement was a joke. Two weeks later I was absolutely madly in love with your mother. She was more than a dream come true for me. You guys only see her as R2D2(机器人). I get to see her as my best friend, my lively wife, and my beautiful queen when we get the chance to be away from here and work.”
“Married a year later. Had Brytt, first child. A daddy’s girl, made me cry. Had Q, my son, someone I could teach to be a man. I’ll admit at that time I was working days and going to school at night and weekends. Mommy was working nights so we were sort of having a rough time. Not seeing enough of each other. So you were the way to bring us back together. Didn’t know it at the time but you changed our lives. We chose to have mommy quit working. By doing so, I lost R2D2 and got back my truly perfect wife.”
“It allowed us to focus on each other and our finally complete family. I also had to go to school for three months. Being away from your mom and my kids tore the heart out of me. Bottom line, we fell into each other’s lap under odd circumstances but it resulted in the coolest family ever. You three kids are our personalities all wrapped up: our heart, soul, humor, kindness, respect, honesty and a million other neat stuff about us. We would not be the same without everyone we have.”
“And it keeps growing. I’ve had the perfect life because of your mom. A perfect life. Give me 1 billion dollars. Make the Dallas Cowboys quarterback. Make me president. None of those would be worth of without her. She doesn’t just “complete me”. She came into my life when I was young and immature, completed me and then made me so much better of a person. I dated and married an angel.”

When I was a boy there were no smart phones, computers were something you saw on STAR TREK(星球大战), and our television only got one channel clearly. Still, I was never bored. The fields, hills, and woodlands around my home were the perfect playground whose adventures were only limited by my imagination.
I can remember once hiking to a nearby lake and slowly walking around it. At the backside of it I was amazed to find an old, one lane, dirt road that I had never seen before. I immediately set out to travel it. It was full of potholes and muddy tire tracks and deep woods bordered it on both sides, but exploring it still seemed like a fine adventure.
I walked on and on for what seemed like hours. I am sure my guardian angel was whispering in my ear to turn around and head back home but I was stubborn and even a bit stupid, so I walked on.
The dirt road gave way to a gravel(砂石) one and then a paved one, yet there was still neither a car nor a house in sight. My legs were getting tired. I noticed that the sun was starting to go down and I grew scared. I didn’t want to end up trapped on this road in the dark of night, but I was sure it would be dark before I could make my way back to the lake again.
I continued to walk on with the fear growing inside of me. My heart was pounding and my legs were aching. I was almost in tears when I turned one last curve and saw something in the distance. It was a house that I recognized.
My heart leapt up! I jumped up and down and laughed out loud. I knew the way home! It was still over a mile away but my legs felt like feathers and I hurried back to my house in no time. I walked in with a big smile on my face just in time for dinner. Then I ended my adventure with a good night’s sleep.
In this life all roads no matter what their twists and turns can lead us home again. They can lead us to our homes here on Earth. They can lead us to our homes in our hearts.

For older adults, having more or closer family members in one’s social network decreases his or her likelihood of death, but having a larger or closer group of friends does not, finds a new study that will be presented at the 111th Annual Meeting of the American Sociological Association (ASA). “We found that older individuals who had more family in their network, as well as older people who were closer with their family were less likely to die,” said James Iveniuk, the lead author of the study and a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Toronto’s Dalla Lana School of Public Health. “No such associations were observed for number of or closeness to friends.”
Titled, “Social Relationships and Mortality(死亡) in Older Adulthood,” the study used nationally representative data from the 2005/2006 and 2010/2011 survey waves of the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (NSHAP), to investigate which aspects of social networks are most important for postponing mortality.
In the survey, these older adults were asked to list up to five of their closest friends, describe in detail the nature of each relationship, and indicate how close they felt to each person. Not including spouses(配偶), the average number of close friends was 2.91, and most older adults sensed high levels of support from their social contacts. Additionally, most respondents were married, in good physical health, and reported not being very lonely.
Iveniuk and co-author L. Philip Schumm, a senior biostatician at the University of Chicago, found that older adults who reported feeling “extremely close” on average to the family members they listed as among their closest friends had about a six percent risk of mortality within the next five years, compared to approximately a 14 percent risk of mortality among those who reported feeling “not very close” to the family members they listed.
Furthermore, the study found that respondents who listed more family members in their network – regardless of closeness – had lower risks of death compared to those who listed fewer family members. “Regardless of the emotional content of a connection, simply having a social relationship with another person may have benefits for longevity(长寿),” Iveniuk said.
Iveniuk said he was surprised that feeling closer to one’s family members and having more relatives as close friends decreased the risk of death for older adults, but that the same was not true of relationships with friends.
29. From the study we can learn .
A. older people will be more likely to die with more friends
B. older people may live longer with closer family relationship
C. older people are less likely to die with a larger group of friends
D. older people will live as long as they have close family members.
30. The underlined word “postponing” in Paragraph 2 can be replaced by .
A. removing B. increasing C. appreciating D. delaying
31. An older adult, , may have a lower risk of death.
A. who makes as many friends as possible
B. who is married and in good physical health
C. who maintains a close relationship with family members
D. who feels extreme close to their friends
D
Whenever we’re introduced to strangers, we make instant decisions about them according to our first impressions: whether they’re attractive, whether they seem like a decent person, how much they earn.
For most Brits, simply asking someone how much they’re ‘worth’ financially is considered awfully impolite. Thankfully, most people are kind enough to drop several hints(暗示) about their relative wealth or successful careers. They’re the ones who post on social media about flying to a meeting for work, or Snapchatting you a photo of their ‘cheeky cocktail’ from a beach in Tenerife. They’re the ones wearing clothes with labels big enough to silently scream about how loaded they are and how well they’re doing.
It’s a worrying trend, and I’m not immune to it. I’ve felt the warm delight of knowing I earned more than somebody, and the baseless grey sadness of knowing that I earn less than another. I’ve ‘checked in’ to places when I know full well that anybody reading it will either get jealous or think I’m an asshole.
It seems as though self-worth is increasingly being tied to the careers we choose and the money we earn. A study in 2013, for example, found that nearly 17 percent of unemployed Americans were depressed, compared to almost six percent of those who had a permanent job.
We need to stop placing so much value on what a person earns, and putting more on what they do. Don’t get me wrong – being ambitious is not a fault, and achievements should always be celebrated. But when a person uses their success to judge you negatively, it becomes a problem.
We need to stop thinking that somebody is worth admiring if they’re just rich but stabbed everybody in the back along the way to get there. We need to throw the expression ‘Nice Guys Finish Last’ to the dustbin of history, by realizing that being a decent person is not a sign of weakness but a positive and desirable quality.
If you want to know what you’re really worth, here’s a tip: It doesn’t have anything to do with your bank account. It’s about how many times you’ve been there for your friends. It’s how many times you’ve been kind to a stranger. It’s every time you did something unselfish, or told your partner you loved them, or treated someone with respect no matter where they were in their own life.
So the next time someone boasts about their wealth, remember that they can have all the money in the world, but they can never buy their way out of being an asshole.
32. In writer’s opinion, how do some people tell us they are wealthy?
A. By giving us an attractive impression.
B. By taking photos on a beach we are familiar with.
C. By wearing expensive clothes with the price tags on them.
D. By leaving some clues about their comfortable life on social media.
33. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 probably means .
A. I’m not interested in the trend.
B. I’m not affected by the trend.
C. I cannot avoid falling into the trend.
D. I cannot make a difference to the trend.
34. Which of the following is TRUE according to the writer?
A. Self-worth should never be attached to the careers.
B. A person can only be judged by his or her own success.
C. Helping others can contribute to your bigger bank account.
D. Being a nice guy is always an important quality for us.
35. The attitude of the writer to those who show off their wealth is .
A. negative B. praiseful C. indifferent D. unknown
第二节 (共5小题; 每小题2分, 满分10 分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
How strong are you?
That is a tough question to answer, whether you are a man or a woman. But, really, I want to ask… How do you define your strength? How do you know your limits? How do you know just how much you’ve got? When push comes to shove(推挤), we often discover that we are much stronger than we think.
What is Strength?
Strength is not always about pure physical strength. 36 I know some people who are intellectually strong, but they get very little done in their jobs. And I know others who find work extremely challenging, but are able to move mountains by their sheer drive(强大动力) and hard work. They possess inner strength. More interesting, is that these productive hard-workers often don’t even notice the load. Bystanders are not only amazed, but often ask, “How do you do it?” The answer usually comes back, “I just work harder than the others.” So, why are some people able to do more? What gives them added drive? What gives them extra strength? 37
Self-Imposed(自我强加的) Limits
What I have observed is that most people impose their own limits. They limit their output based on self-framed limits of their capabilities and strengths. 38 Sometimes they are based on self-aware capacities. Sometimes these limits are based on nothing. So, how do we break through these limits? How do we get stronger?
Pushing It
Many people are going through the motions, but are nowhere near their limits. If you want to be stronger, you have to push your boundaries. Pushing it is what it takes to increase your limits. In the gym, bodybuilders discovered this long ago. 39 Want to test your limits? Push yourself. Make sure your goals are slightly beyond what you think can be achieved.
40
Most people underestimate(低估) their strength. As you go through your day, challenge your capacity. Test your limits. Push yourself, to find your true boundaries and define your strength. When you discover how much you’ve really got, you may surprise even yourself.
A. When have you found that you were much stronger than you thought?
B. Become Strong Enough.
C. But, the same principle is true when it comes to inner strength, discipline and drive.
D. You Are Stronger Than You Think
E. Rather, it is about willpower, discipline, drive as well as the capacity to get things done.
F. Sometimes these boundaries are based on past experiences.
G. Could it be, they have simply given themselves permission to do more?

More than once I 62 (call) to a hospital emergency room or to be with a family around the bed of a dying relative. And more than once I’ve been at a loss for words.

Dear Manager,
This is a letter of complaint concerned the actions of one of your online store. Last Sunday, October 29th, I buy a dress from a store on your website. But I was not satisfied with a dress when I received it, so I decided to return it. But the salesman refused my request in a rudely tone. I explained the reason that I wanted to return it, but he said he was busy and didn’t have time to deal it. Now he isn’t replying to us at all.
I feel that the salesman was impolite. I hope that you can look into for the matter. I have bought lots of things on your website and I look forward to a much pleasurable shopping experience next time.

Dear John,
I’m sorry to know that you feel unhappy in the new class. One of the reasons, I believe, is that you just left your home and arrived in a new country where everything is unfamiliar to you. You haven’t had enough time to get used to all the surrounding things or to know the classmates. Maybe you feel a little anxious about the life ahead of you.
I believe, as long as you have courage and confidence in handling these, you will get over these difficulties in no time. To start with, spend some time learning about Chinese culture. I am sure you will find it interesting. Besides this you can also try your best to learn Chinese so that you can be easily understood by your classmates.
I’d like to invite you to play basketball together this weekend. I hope you can adapt to your new life as soon as possible.
Yours,
Li Hua
